    I love how you showed your “dirty tank” and the natural progression of an aquarium. Your not afraid to show the real life of keeping an aquarium. Your videos are awesome dave. Keep em coming buddy. Great advice.

      Yep! I like this a lot as well. Usually on those channels people show only perfectly clean set ups, with no algae (which usually happens only for a very short period of time) and then - puff - let's film another tank (and you never get to see the previous one, which now has minor issues, which are completely normal, btw).

    Great vid that is spot on. I go the easy route and always throw in some nerite snails, bristlenose and black molly. They are the 1-2-3 punch and ultimate cleanup crew for planted tanks.

    Week 3 of my dark start tank which has been kept fully covered in black sheets, checked on it today to realise my jet black substrate (flourite black) has turned a lighter brown tone. I'm hoping this goes from once the tank is cycled and a big water change.

    Have a fluval 3.0 on a 55, how long would you run it in a heavily planted tank? It is a new set up, dealing with diatoms at the moment, even the hornwort looks like it's dying

    Some rocks (Especially terrestrially found in your backyard) can be the culprit of diatom blooms. Removing the rocks, increasing water flow and using Seachem PhosGuard really help!:)

      Allison rocks would not contribute to diatoms...this is most likely based on the old myth of silicates being the cause of diatoms

    Hi Dave, I need advice on helping my frog tanks? I have two African Clawed frogs in separate tanks because I have a froglet and adult frog that have to be separated so right now I have both tanks with Brown Algae or Diatoms in both tanks. I never had this before and I am very confuse about what happen? I been doing weekly water changes, cleaning off the brown algae that is getting worse it keeps reappearing in just a couple of days or so? What am I doing wrong is there a chemical I could use? Thank you, Kim

    I've been battling diatoms for months and they keep coming back. Aesthetically I have no problem with diatoms. The problem is diatoms cover the leaves of the plants and they suffocate them slowly killing the plants. Removing diatoms that cover the leaves is so frustrating.

    • @ADUAquascaping
      @ADUAquascaping  9 месяцев назад +1

      It could be if you have hard water with silicon in your water or maybe even disruptions in your microbial balance and cycle.
      Oto catfish do a great job of eating it!

    • @ADUAquascaping
      @ADUAquascaping  9 месяцев назад +1

      I used to think the higher silicon was a myth, but it may be true. And so can the microbial imbalance. It could be both or one or the other

    New tank set up tip...Start your aquarium lights on a timer. Have them on for six to seven hours a day. Be patient and test your parameters on a scheduled system. This hobby is wonderful and it is very rewarding.
    Great info as usual. Looking forward to more updates. Have fun mountain biking. I hear you on tank maintenance as far as pruning mature tanks. Rock on bro!

    • @call_me_stan5887
      @call_me_stan5887 6 лет назад +1

      I totally agree on the lighting - it's a great tip not to have the light on longer than 6 hours a day for the first week. What I do is slowly increase the timing, say1 hour a week, till I reach my final set point (which is 8 hours, currently, but I could do 9 as well). I can't really imagine the set up without timer, to be honest. I also have a dimmer so that I can modify light intensity with no issue.

    I am a big fan, and the setup of this tank was a huge inspiration for my new tank which is around 3 weeks old. Now, I'm sure you have much more knowledge in aquariums as me but I did 2 50% water changes for the first 2 weeks and I haven't got a single visible amount of algae. Why didn't you do this? I have MY lights on technically 24/7 with the Finnex 24/7 and don't have a SINGLE algae problem

    In my case 10x the dose of liquid co2 makes diatoms disappear in up to 72h.... I only experience diatoms in soil based tanks and never had any in volcanic powder tanks and fertilizer sticks. Actually it seems to be much easier for me to control water not using soil.

    Hello Dave ! I know this is a silly question but i'm gonna ask it anyway . I checked out planted aquarium fluorescent spectrum charts and found out that those fluorescents emmit light with wavelength below 400 which is considered radiation . Some of those even emmit light with 300 wavelength . Would this harm me or my fishes ? I hope you answer my question . I wish you the best !

    Partially due to low flow,(use a sponge filter) but primarily excessive nutrients. Over did the osmacote+ on initial set up by a lot. Like a whole lot!...still learning.

    Do you know if diatomes goes away by it self over time without any manual removal or is manual removal needed + water changes etc? I noticed I had diatomes build up on some of my anubias leafs, but one morning it was all gone, the plant literally looked sparkling new! I only have a nerite snail in that tank and I find it kinda hard to believe that he alone cleaned it all off in just 1 night but maybe? What do u think?

    • @xoallison12ox
      @xoallison12ox 6 лет назад +2

      They go away on their own most of the time. Adding an air bubbler to move the water more will help speed up the process. My tank had a bad diatom problem & it took about 1 month to find a balance. I also used Seachem phosguard too, but water changed and time were needed.

    • @YoungSinatra25

      You'll be surprised what a single snail can do. I've seen a single nerite clear more spot algae than a small group of flying foxes.

    Hey,
    My tank has been running for around 3 months (20L with a finnex stingray). Tank has anubias, marsilea and crypts (wendtii, willisii, parva). Just recently started getting brown diatoms and tiny tufts of BBA. The stingray is around 42 par and the glass top cuts it 10-15% to around 36-40.
    Should I look into decreasing the par further or reducing the photo period for the tank since its lower light demanding plants? I think with black window screen I can get it to 20-24 par if thats enough for the parva.

    My QT tank seems to have microfauna such as copepods, daphnia, ostracoda and so on. Are these tiny creatures a danger to my Blue Dream shrimp fry that are approximately two days old?
    Secondly, I don't usually have an issue with algae when suddenly I awoke one morning to see green fuzz over everything in both tanks, and now I'm left puzzled. The hardest part of addressing any algae issue is 'time & patience'. For example, Method One may take approx two weeks to complete, and after the initial treatment, you still may be facing the same problem. It's a matter of trial and error, plus the factor of time & patience tend to make the entire process quite daunting.
    Nonetheless, we persevere and continue to treat our tanks until the proper balance has been established. The only caveat is the fact that we specialize in nano tanks (currently five gallons and less), and the room for leniency/error is slim to none. I've been contemplating the addition of CO2 to help win the war against the algae, but I'm unaware of anyone using CO2 systems in such small tanks. Is this something that can be applicable to nano tanks?
    Thanks for all the hard work and inspiration.
    Keep up the good work my friend.

    So does the principles of biological activity within a mature substrate also apply to an HOB? By this I ask if a HOB with the capacity to hold more media and conversely more biological life also help reduce diatoms or do you believe the impact is minimal? I just started testing this theory as my 8 month old 40B is still experiencing minor diatom issues so I changed from a Aquaclear 50 to a Marineland 350 and tripled the sponge capacity and also added Seachem Matrix.

    • @ADUAquascaping
      @ADUAquascaping  6 лет назад

      Rod S well soils, such as Andisols, which is what Aquasoil is. Volcanic Ash based clays with humus are already superior for biochemical processing. I don't think it would have much impact, but if your substrate is poor it could help. It just means your microbial fauna are out of balance, as to why, I am not sure, but it isn't reaching full maturity. It is oscillating.

    do any of the bacteria starters like the ADA ones help mature your tank sooner?

    • @ADUAquascaping
      @ADUAquascaping  6 лет назад

      Terry Foldy Holes not technically sooner, but can take up residual waste as the bacteria beds mature. It takes 21-30 days for bacteria to mature. The additives don't speed this up. They just help reduce and decompose initial amounts as the bacteria mature. And aid as food for the bacteria. Depending on type of additive. Hope this makes sense.

      It's an algae bloom. Do 1/3 water change and change nothing else. Be sure NOT TO add fertilizers (or really, really sparingly) for the first 2 weeks. Also have a light on for up to 6-7 hours a day and no longer, then slowly increase this period (about 1 hour a week) till you reach your set point. If an algae bloom persists, do another water change. Remember about weekly water changes (about 1/4 vol).

    Precisely! Diatoms are just normal for non-established tanks. Had them in every single newly set-up tank :) Then they just go away on their own. No action needed. Of course you can scrub them during water change.

      Sławek B. How long does it usually last in your aquariums? I have it in my newly set up aquarium.

    • @call_me_stan5887
      @call_me_stan5887 6 лет назад +1

      That depends on how long microbial beds develop. In my case it has never been longer than a month. Just scrub it gently during water changes. And remember, the actual tank cycling/maturation might take much longer depending on the substrate, filters, fish etc. It is also a good practice to start with about 6 hours of light and slowly increase it (by slowly I mean about 1 hour a week). I would not recommend having the light on for more than 10-11 hours a day. But again it depends on the set up and lighting (for instance, if you have a dimmer that simulates sunrise and sunset you might keep it a bit longer).

    what type of output glass thing you have there is called?

    • @landonholm4906
      @landonholm4906 3 года назад

      It’s called a lily pipe. They are glass output and they look great in aquariums. You can get some nice ones for pretty cheep. You can either get just the outflow or you can get a set which has a glass intake and output. My favorite lily pipe set is on Amazon it’s 40 dollars and it includes a lily pipe outflow and an intake that has a built in surface skimmer!

    May i know how to let my plant making bubble?

    • @dboy6400
      @dboy6400 5 лет назад

      You're probably referring to "pearling". It is the release of oxygen from the plants and requires CO2 injection into the water. You can see many videos about adding CO2.

    What if my tank is cycled and has been running for about 2 months?

    • @ADUAquascaping
      @ADUAquascaping  4 года назад

      It may be a lapse in your filtration maturation. Try getting some Oto cats to eat it and increase your bio media in your filter and increase your surface agitation. Help build up oxygen and more microbial fauna in the filter to help reduce diatoms on rocks.

      You may just want to get some Oto catfish and also trim it! The cats really do a good job.
