  • Why New Aquariums Go BROWN | Fixing Brown Diatom Algae
In this video we take a look at why new aquariums get brown algae growing over everything. Brown algae is actually a diatom not a true algae. Never the less diatom brown algae is a very common occurrence in new freshwater aquarium setups. Brown algae is caused normally just by the very fact the aquarium is new and still cycling. Diatom brown algae is actually one of the first types of organism to move into a new aquarium. Things we can do to lessen the amount of brown algae are similar to normal green algae such as reducing nutrient availability, adding live plants and adding algae eaters the the aquarium. However most of the time brown diatom algae eventually burns itself out after a while and one the aquarium becomes established usually dies out in favor of green algae.
