Beatrice Rana plays Chopin: 12 Études, Op. 25: No. 11 in A Minor ("Winter Wind")

  • Beatrice Rana describes the final three Études of Chopin's Op. 25 as "emotionally agonising, as if reflecting a cry of desperation from the composer." Discover her album devoted to this composer: w.lnk.to/brcLY
"It is often written that each of the Études in Chopin’s Op. 25 collection, composed in the mid-1830s, is a self-standing piece of music. However, to me they seem implicitly connected, joined by a single line of expression, as if they are taking you on a journey." - Beatrice Rana

I've heard dozens of versions of this Étude, and I've never seen such grace with dynamics and technique blended together with personal impression and feeling. Also, She managed to bring it down to a more graceful and less urgent and dramatic version of it and it is so good. I wish I had the chance of learning how to improve my piano dynamics with her. She is simply amazing.

It is easily my prefered piano composition, it is so beautiful that almost makes me cry. So well composed and so well played, so much energy completely under control, letting it go and restraining it as needed. What a feeling.

Very loud and annoying resonance from too much pedaling in each second half of the chromatic scale descents, especially toward the end of each sentence. One should refrain from excessive pedaling in the second half of the chromatic scale descents for two reasons: (1) over-sustaining bass notes causes excessive resonance which makes music very murky; (2) excessive resonance makes hearing/tracking long decent difficult which is bound for mistakes or even grinds to a halt.
