imagine, he was 87 years old when this was done !!!! 80 years of music behind him !!!! and how perfect everything goes smooth even at this age. His brahms concerto when 91 years old with the israel philharmonic was incredible... and he was already blind !!!. a long career of lots of beauty and virtuosity.
What a contrast to see such a beautiful video and such unfortunate comments altogether. I've never even dreamed of being able to play a piano and yet mr. Rubenstein made it look like child's play. His interventions were surely slow compared to the orchestra but in my opinion it gave this video a whole new air when you consider I listen to the concerto several times a week. Can't we just enjoy it? -- Somebody told me if I didn't have something nice to say I'd better shut the hell up!
Beethoven greatly admired Mozart's piano concerto No.24 in C minor and modelled his own C minor concerto after Mozart's. I like how this concerto is similar to Mozart's in style and has Beethoven's own "unique voice" and exceptional compositional skills at the same time. "I've always counted myself amongst the greatest admirers of Mozart and shall remain so until my last breath" -L.V.Beethoven
Thank you for posting. It was difficult to accompany Rubinstein because of his tendency not to follow rhythmic patterns. He used to make rubato also when playing with an orchestra. The Concertgebouw orchestra was good in 1973 even under the pitiful Bernard Haitink. Interesting recording.
@rubestuh what is important that Rubinstein was capable to play this Brahms concerto without looking when changing position of the arm !!!! There were no mistakes. Nobody else is capable to play this concerto blindfold..... rubinstein did as he had no choice.... Rubinsteins capacities are also seen in the famous Moscou concert 1964.
Don't bother arguing with this guy. He's a nut with an incredibly twisted worldview. The kind that you just sort of give up on and hope he doesn't go blow something up one day.
Btw, there's a great video on YT of Rubinstein, Heifetz, and Piatigorsky playing Mendelssohn's Piano Trio #1. That'd REALLY piss you off wouldn't it :)
@hkuprobity2: Perfection speaks for itself ... be it from a 7 yr old Mozart, or, a 80 yr old Rubinstein ! Outstanding creativity isn't something one just picks up at the local grocery store ! "given ample chance" ... thats a mere conjecture and an unfounded one at that !
The conductor is Bernard Haitink. Rubinstein was about 85 at the time, was in the process of going nearly blind, and was starting to lose his hearing, as well. You wouldn't really know it just by listening.
@hkuprobity2 : Perfection speaks for itself ... be it from a 7 yr old Mozart, or, a 80 yr old Rubinstein ! Outstanding creativity isn't something that's easily available at the local grocery store !
OK, so several of us agree that we like Rubinstein most when he's playing Chopin, and maybe his Beethoven isn't as dramatic as we prefer. But, let's be honest, who among us wouldn't love to be able to play like this at any age, let alone 87?!?
If you like Beethoven's third piano concerto, you can check out my third piano sonata here at RUclips: ComposerTS Piano Sonata Nr.3 in c minor. Thanks for the upload. It certainly is not Allegro con brio, but a very nice interpretation. Especially the Concertgebouw Orchestra has a very good sound balance.
@stickitupyapipe OK! Good response against the hiper simplification. Same things one would say about black, feminist, gay and others "political correct" ideas.
@uhartchristian This was by far the weakest of his three recordings of this concerto. Not only does he hit many wrong notes, but the rhythm is sometimes unsteady and the tone is not as focused and grounded as we had come to expect from a Rubinstein performance. Remarkable it was, nonetheless, for a near-blind man of 89. But who ever wanted a Rubinstein performance praiseworthy only through reference to age and eyesight? In 1964, in Moscow, he still had full strength.
How would you know? Rubinstein didn't play in Germany after the war. I presume you know why. Besides you should know something about conducting to know if my statements are true or not.
We disagree about some ways to play Beethoven's Fourth. So what? I don't think he's an idiot and if he thinks I am, I'm sorry for him. For the rest, without controversy no art can survive. Don't get depressed, get a life.
I could make some un-desired remark using SAT prep words that I looked up on google to describe the pianists interpretation in a way that puts him down. But in the end I'll still be a nameless, faceless, youtuber who will never write, play, or perform any great music.
Rubinstein is amazing!! and what can one say about the piece! is simply astonishing!!
I love this orchestra. They always play with such heart and beauty, they're perfectly in tune, and they're subtle.

a great orchestra and the best pianist ever, perfect!!!!!!!!
Arthur Rubinstein this is the genius who plays wonderful Beethoven's music !!
He was so elegant and had that poise of a Maestro!!! I will always love him!
What a great performance.
LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!! simply beautiful!!

God made this guy live so long so that he could be recorded in high quality for the rest of us
if i was born a decade earlier i might still get a chance to see him plays in live...

Ah, Concertgebouw! And he was 87 years old!
@rubestuh what is important that Rubinstein was capable to play this Brahms concerto without looking when changing position of the arm !!!!

I agree. But the orchestra is great so is the recording.
There is still something great watching Rubenstein still able to play this well at 88 though
Don't bother arguing with this guy. He's a nut with an incredibly twisted worldview. The kind that you just sort of give up on and hope he doesn't go blow something up one day.
Amazing Bethoven!
Btw, there's a great video on YT of Rubinstein, Heifetz, and Piatigorsky playing Mendelssohn's Piano Trio #1.
That'd REALLY piss you off wouldn't it :)
I am playign this tonight with my school orchestra, The cadenza is beautifull :O
puntualmente perfecto, una maravilla ¡¡¡¡
very interesting.
its definitely one of the phrases that stands out most for me in the sonata.

I find Bernard Haitink a very entertaining conductor to watch
Maravilha.

@uhartchristian
I believe he was 89 when he recorded the Brahms D minor with the Israel Philharmonic.
Still very very old, of course.
@TheIndependence000
"Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel - the masters of us all"

OK, so several of us agree that we like Rubinstein most when he's playing Chopin, and maybe his Beethoven isn't as dramatic as we prefer. But, let's be honest, who among us wouldn't love to be able to play like this at any age, let alone 87?!?
@TheIndependence000 I love people like this! :D :)
DAE hear the orchestra speeding up when Rubinstein is not playing, and Rubinstein slowing down when it is solo piano?
I think you're referring to Beethoven's 3rd Symphony (Eroica), not this concerto. But your point is well taken.
The spelling is correct. His name was Artur.
I like him. It looks like he's closing his eyes but he just looked downwards.
His manager Sol Hurok thought that Artur sounded more exotic or something, so Arthur became Artur.
Yup.
It is pity that it has no 2nd and the 3rd mvt...
Haha, Haitink looks so funny!!! How old was he back then?
Isn't that Bernard Haitink conducting? If not, it looks just like him
@TheIndependence000
we was?
@03GuitarPlayer11
Except when they disagree? Just asking.
There is a face on the end of the link aha. He is probably shocked at how good Rubinstein is.
I'm going to play it :-D
(but without orchestra. 2 pianos)
How can you possibly NOT put a link towards the 2d part when you upload a video in 2 parts...
I´ve heard him playing two Mozart Piano Quartets so far...
How come everyone in the orchestra looks like Wallace Shawn?
wasn't that the eroica symphony?
is the conductor Bernard Haitink?
@stickitupyapipe OK! Good response against the hiper simplification. Same things one would say about black, feminist, gay and others "political correct" ideas.
maybe you would like this concerto.
just write the word FREAKOLLO, and you would get to a 2 parts concerto enjoy.
@brucericard or you could just not be lazy and look through the 7 vids of the user. :D
He's 86 here. My god...
Hmmm, this is a tough one - do I trust you and cssst5 or Artur Rubenstein?
Gee, I wonder who is more qualified...
LOL
what year did Beethoven die?
he is playing much slower than the orchestra's tempo... unbelievable.. maybe he didn't hear it well.
I reapeat the first four words back at you.
you could also compare Beethoven with the Russian composer Anton Rubinstein, who kind of looked like him.
It's nice, but it just lacks punch. If only there were clips around from when Rubinstein was 44 and not 88.
lol arthur plays with closed eyes?
A little slow?
it is:
the page is /watch?v=FetACZlj0_0
the 0_0 is the face with the two eyes as used in modern internet chatting and the comment is probably true
@uhartchristian

In 1964, in Moscow, he still had full strength.
Looks like he has faced a burnout...
Ahhh 240p, we meet again.
Actually he played some Mozart...I own some of his recordings
How would you know? Rubinstein didn't play in Germany after the war. I presume you know why. Besides you should know something about conducting to know if my statements are true or not.
that's an interesting comment...may be true...
The conductor is Haitink?
I like Chopin's piano concerto no2 more the this one
Nice, very nice
@Grafschnitzel To me its prove that men are better then god if he exists.
...?
look up the word "interpretation"
@cssst5
LOL! Reverting to personal attacks is the first sign of a weak mind...
I don't know what your problem is but I bet it's hard to pronounce...
gosh everyone in the orchestra is wearing specs
my god is so depressing to read all these nonsense comments here..
I agree with cssst5 here. He plays Beethoven like Chopin. A wrong interpretation this is.
Music is not science, you numbnuts. Stop fighting. Make music, not war. :)
he was russian (russian jew)
