My grandmother was notorious for playing this over and over again on the record player when my dad was young (early 70s), along with Rach 3. He said she used to listen to it so often that he and everyone in the house got sick of it, but she loved it still. I think that was partly what prompted my dad to start learning the piano. Today my dad is a professional cellist and I wouldn't be a violinist if it wasn't for him. I had the fortune of seeing this concerto played by Dmitry Masleev (first prize winner of TCH15) a few years ago in my little town with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Kogan. What an incredible concert. The crowd clapped before the first movement was over and in between movements, but honestly I couldn't care less because it deserved such a rapturous response. One of the most incredible concerts I ever saw. My sister was there as well and actually got to speak to, along with her class, ask Mr Masleev questions. He didn't speak any english so they needed someone to translate, and he said he practiced 8 hours a day. That blew my mind a little bit.

wtf did i just watch? how can a human being do something like that? is her brain consciously controlling those hands or is she in some kind of trance. this is amazing. played so beautifully. it brought a tear to my eye, such a beautiful piece.
I approve, genuinely. The uniqueness of Martha comes through her progressiveness. As a pianist, she has grown both emotionally and musically to reach a sense of ‘oneness’ with what she is playing. Unlike other virtuosos which are incapable of progressing as they become older, Martha gives music a multi-faceted beauty that is hard to achieve when playing such pieces repetitively, according to the classical repertoire. I approve.
Sure, yeah, tie passes but nothing changes; you'd still have to travel far and cash out hundreds if not thousands in order to attend a performance of Martha Argerich, when she plays, if she plays. RUclips hasn't beaten live music!
This became an obsession to me at 21 when I first began listening to 'classical' music. Now I'm teaching myself the piano I plan on learning it in 2018.
Andrew Beadle hey Andrew just thought I'd share my experience with you. I heard it at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester my home town when I was 11yrs, obviously it blew my mind and I became totally obsessed with it. I decided I must learn it so I went and bought the score and started studying it. I could play the into almost emediately, I just practised the passages I could play with moderate difficulty and then gradually over about 4yrs I'd nailed it. But I was just a kid, I spent the rest of my life to date and the love affair I have with it, a rich and enduring true love for it, perfecting and tweaking it. Don't be daunted by it, break it up into small phrases and take your time. As a tip I think the 2nd mvt is the hardest of the whole piece! Very best of love with it I'd say, you don't need luck, you just need to love it to master it
Her recording of it just a few years ago I think is better. The orchestra in several spots during this performance just wasn't keeping up with her tempo. In her recent performance I just don't hear the timing issues.

It's my dream to see this piece performed live. It's a very important piece to me, and I listen to it whenever I'm feeling really down. I think I would be crying in the theatre if I heard it in person, but ever since I first heard it, I knew this piece would be part of me forever.
It’s wonder the ROC picked this as their national anthem. I’d be proud to hear this at the Olympics if I was Russian. A truly passionate and beautiful concerto!
The miracle one must stop to consider when listening to and watching this performance is how Tchaikovsky came up with and decided on the placement in the score of each of the notes. Yes, this is a work we all have heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. Some may call it a warhorse, but there is no denying its majesty. No less incredible than this performance by M. Argerich is the genius behind the actual composition.
exactly it actually pisses me off seeing someone who literally tries to act pretentious just because this is classical music. I guarantee that if he was on some other fcking video he wouldnt go around saying how the person who made the video is a genius and how he figures out how to fcking type on a keyboard.

Then, I've watched Yuja Wang. Lastly, I'm watching Martha Argerich. I'd say... This performance of hers takes my breath away more so than Lang Lang's and Yuja Wang's combined.
@@olliemartinelli4034 I think a lot of pianists are constrained by the technical difficulties in the piece like the octave sections, but Argerich is able to bring everything up to the intended tempo and truly able to play the piece as she wants it to sound.
@@mikrokosmiko1 Yes, I did. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have made my original comment. Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of Yuja Wang but not so much of Lang Lang. Perfection from Martha full of command on the Piano 👍🏼. Bravo to the Conductor also. He is so expressive especially at the end of the 1st movement, give me goosebumps.

I don't think there are any words to describe this performance. Every element of it is just incredible and beyond perfect. The piece, the soloist, the conductor, the orchestra.
it is good that we have all this great music. Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, brahms, Richard strauss, Stravinsky, bach, glass, and, of course, I could go on and on and on. we don't NEED to pick ONE and call them "the best"...this is a testament to the variations inherent in the human soul and experience...
One of my favorite pieces, Martha , in my humble opinion is one of the best. Ño face grimaces, no tossing hair, no nudity. Just beautiful , professional making music
The keyboard tigress on the loose! The amazing thing about Argerich is that her technical accomplishments are achieved with without fuss or theatrics, in fact nonchalantly. The speed and precision of her double octaves for example is electrifying. Having lauded her all encompassing technique, there is also an innate musical sensitivity and insight on display. A remarkable virtuoso whom is assured a place in annals of piano legends.
Tchaikowsky is the genius of the geniuses !!! Martha Argerich - superb! ... but I don't get how people dare putting an ad in the middle of a masterpiece!

Simply unbelievable ... I never liked Tchaikovsky but listened to this because my wife told me that this was her prefered piece when she was young (in the meawhile we both have the 70 behind us) ... and I still do not like Tchaikovsky but once I started to watch Mrs Argerich I could not stop until the grand finale. Thirty four minutes I had the impression that Tchaikovsky wrote this with the thought in mind "now lets see who can play this" and look - there are geniuses who play this - and not simply "play" - but with a tear causing virtuosity, with deep feeling paired with ultimate precision - and all this by heart
@@Emilien-hy3sy Please elaborate. First of all, I'd be glad if you accepted that not everyone shares the same opinion as you, so saying "there's no way that the Rach concertos are better" is just ignorant. Secondly, I'm really interested in your reasons for saying that the Tchaikovsky is much better. In my opinion it is pretty weak compared to the other great concertos, especially the piano part. Rachmaninoff's however seem to be unmatched in perfection of melody, harmony, textures, orchestration and thematic development as well as evoking a feeling of pure passion. Once again, just my own opinion though.
Funny thing is, Argerich (pianist) and Dutoit (conductor) were married from 1969-1973, divorcing 2 years before this concert. They continued to perform and record together obviously.
definitely Martha, numerous divorces, abandoned all her kids for the music, etc... Great pianist, but terrible wife and mother. She sacrificed her chance at a family to become one of the greatest pianist.
I lost my 93-year old mother last year. One could say "we were prepared". There is not a day gone by I do not think about her every little move or gesture. It is not a heart breaking sadness. It is like a profound LOVE and care that crosses the boundary of life and death. I am no longer afraid of my own mortality. For the first time I feel there is someone on the other side waiting for me.
It makes me cry. It is so emotional... I've listened to this piece of music hundreds times and every time it sounds so new and joyful and sad at the same time. How can one compose something like this?
The opening piano chords against that melody is so grand, elegant and utterly beautiful. It gives me goosebumps and makes me tear up at the same time. Just incredible.
Fantastic ! Martha's daredevil tempos, lyrical nuances, held the concerto together. Her love and raptire brought fresh excitement to a justified well-known masterpiece. Thank you.

I approve.
Thank you Tchaikovsky, very cool.
Hey are you who I think you are,the 9year old?
Nice take, Tchaikovsky.
Thank you Maestro Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, no one is more capable than Martha Argerich to play your Masterpiece
yooo its tchaikovsky hand me over the autograph
I’m in tears! I’ve never heard anything as beautiful and awe inspiring as this. Martha Argerich is the greatest pianist I’ve ever heard.

You must be so rich
Don't have to be rich to enjoy the Classics.
Eileen K. Whitley-Twidt *_y e e t_*
Very best of love with it I'd say, you don't need luck, you just need to love it to master it
So what happened
Did you learn piano yet?
I. Andante non troppo e molto maestoso: 0:35
II. Andantino semplice: 20:42
III. Allegro con fuoco: 27:17
Thanks!!!
But argerich did no Allegro, she did Prestissimo 😂
Something always draws me back to this video. Absolutely beautiful.
He visto tantas veces éste concierto y no puedo dejar de emocionarme tanto.
It has been clear for some time that Argerich is superhuman. She is beyond, out of this world.
Getting interrupted by a RUclips ad during the 3rd movement felt like getting stabbed in the heart.
lol gotta get the ad blocks dude
2020 anyone?😂👏
Still the best Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 ever played.
Absolutamente
Her recording of it just a few years ago I think is better. The orchestra in several spots during this performance just wasn't keeping up with her tempo. In her recent performance I just don't hear the timing issues.
@@kofine05lk43 Because she plays slower. It's amazing that she still plays Tchaikovsky 1 and prokofiev 3 near her 80s. She has both sceduled in verbier this year and 2021 París/Berlin

Thank you very much !!!
It's my dream to see this piece performed live. It's a very important piece to me, and I listen to it whenever I'm feeling really down. I think I would be crying in the theatre if I heard it in person, but ever since I first heard it, I knew this piece would be part of me forever.
I have to askr, where are you from ? I may take my circumstances for granted where a performance of this i secoondary, so forgive me
I’m going to see it performed live at St. George’s Hall, Bradford, Yorkshire, England tomorrow night. Feel privileged.
Argerich is the genius behind the actual composition.
davidhertzberg y
exactly it actually pisses me off seeing someone who literally tries to act pretentious just because this is classical music. I guarantee that if he was on some other fcking video he wouldnt go around saying how the person who made the video is a genius and how he figures out how to fcking type on a keyboard.
Exactly..
A "warhorse" is such precisely because it is such great music that people want to perform it and hear it over and over again.
+soccer player without legs you make zero sense.
Performing since the age of 7. What a God given talent Martha Argerich!!!
She's still a whirlwind of talent. I think I was just inspired to listen to her Tchaikovsky Concerto. Thanks!!!

I love this artist Martha Argerich. She is so talented as well as beautiful. She plays with her soul. There is no one in the word like her. I am honored to be able to listen to this piece by the world's greatest pianist!
I've watched Lang Lang. Then, I've watched Yuja Wang. Lastly, I'm watching Martha Argerich. I'd say... This performance of hers takes my breath away more so than Lang Lang's and Yuja Wang's combined.
Anna Fedorova
@@siddharthabhimanyu9667 Federova gets nowhere near this. The octave passages are the best example of how Argerich technically is unbeatable.
@@olliemartinelli4034 I think a lot of pianists are constrained by the technical difficulties in the piece like the octave sections, but Argerich is able to bring everything up to the intended tempo and truly able to play the piece as she wants it to sound.
Have you tried listening to them separately?
@@mikrokosmiko1 Yes, I did. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have made my original comment. Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of Yuja Wang but not so much of Lang Lang. I love each and every performance she made and I like her interpretation. I watch every video of her performances and she inspires me.But, as I watched Martha Argerich's performance, I have to say that Martha Argerich's take on this piece surpasses both of theirs. But each to their own. Every performer is unique in their own way and both Yuja Wang and Martha Argerich happened to be among my favourite pianists.
i have no words for this. I'm just crying.

For me the most beautiful orchestral piece ever made. Everything you hear is so powerful. The harmony is so outstanding arrange.
Perfection from Martha full of command on the Piano 👍🏼.
Bravo to the Conductor also. He is so expressive especially at the end of the 1st movement, give me goosebumps.
Y no me. Queda otra cosa que decir que GRACIAS !!!
This is quite simply one of the best pieces in the world!
There are many excellent interpretations and performances of this piece, but nobody has ever bested Martha.
My word, this is truly fantastic, what a performance! Simply wonderful!

OMG! I can't believe it! How can anyone make something like this? I cannot stop crying about this because it's so emotional!
I first heard this piece of music when I was about 9/10. I fell in love with it then. I'm 61 now. Still love it
I don't think there are any words to describe this performance. Every element of it is just incredible and beyond perfect. The piece, the soloist, the conductor, the orchestra.
She plays with all her heart, mind, body and soul. She becomes one with the music. I love to watch her face, also Charles while he's conducting.
it is good that we have all this great music. Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, brahms, Richard strauss, Stravinsky, bach, glass, and, of course, I could go on and on and on. we don't NEED to pick ONE and call them "the best"...this is a testament to the variations inherent in the human soul and experience...
+bckm54 I agree! This wonderful music is one of the most compelling examples of the kind of beauty human beings are capable of creating.
+bckm54 I consider your lack of Rachmaninoff disturbing.
Justin Burton Him too. :)
Mahler is one of those who will not find a place on MY list. Maybe on yours, just not on mine. :)
bckm54 awh how come?
The part where the piano joins the strings, sounds like the sunlight shining on the ocean
Anal what?
Fantastique !!! Quelle énergie, quelle furia !!!
Magnifique
Bravo !!!
Normally I find it hard to listen to different recordings of classical pieces I love but this was wonderful. Amazing technique and musicality.
Tchaikowsky is the genius of the geniuses !!! Martha Argerich - superb! ... but I don't get how people dare putting an ad in the middle of a masterpiece!
I can listen to that first minute of the 3rd movement forever... it's just so perfect.
Listening to Tchaikovsky is like being momentarily wrapped in God's sweet embrace.
God never existed, Tchaikovsky did exist, thats the difference
Screw that god stuff, Tchaikovsky's genius is what I marvel in.
The Truth Prove it then, should be quite easy right?

remsan03 Haha I watch Rach 2 for that xD

Gustavo Garcia
Yes, Rach 3 is the Everest which everyone aspire to. As for Brahms 2, Zimerman/Bernstein legendary recording was awesometacular!
Lol same
😂 same.....
This is the best and most important piano concerto ever composed. Change my mind.
I know you don't wanna hear this but I think Rach 2 and Rach 3 are better.
Only my opinion, of course I also respect your opinion.
Luca Klös Well, they are great too ;)
Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto 😢
@@Luca-yg5qx In no aspect Rach 2 and 3 are better than this concerto
How is this funny
David Au yeung funny: curious; strange; peculiar; odd:
She left him because she found him with a violinist.
shouldnt shit where you eat.... specially if youre both like super talented. i wonder which of them both is more difficult to be around
definitely Martha, numerous divorces, abandoned all her kids for the music, etc... Great pianist, but terrible wife and mother. She sacrificed her chance at a family to become one of the greatest pianist.
Wow. She does things I didn't know were physically possible to that piano. Astonishing! Bravo!
So my own Mather and father, RIP
It makes me cry. It is so emotional... I've listened to this piece of music hundreds times and every time it sounds so new and joyful and sad at the same time. How can one compose something like this?

Whenever I am listening to this, it takes me back to my childhood in the USSR - near every day the fragments of the Concerto were on TV! Even the main news Novosti would start with it! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Yes and how very ironic that Russia then and now are so proud of a gay man being one of the most homophobic countries on the planet.
Not news, Novosti, but time, Vremya. And it didn't start with Tchaikovsky, it was Pakhmutova "Time ahead".
She is heralded as being among the greatest pianists. However, she is performing the GREATEST piece of music composed by the GREATEST COMPOSER that ever lived.
