I test-drove one when they came out last year here in Australia. It's quite an impressive small SUV. It drove like a raised Hyundai i30. Speaking of Hyundai and the i30, the styling reminds me of the older i30s. Reasonably nice-looking but generic and lacking character. The interior is overdone and a bit gimmicky as well. The technology is there but is engineered cheaply compared to Tesla, legacy brands and other Chinese automakers. Is it for me? No. I'd pay the extra 10k it costs in Australia to get into a base Model 3, but for the average person in Australia and most countries, this is all the car they need. They're already selling like hotcakes here in the land Down Under, and I'm sure they will in the rest of the world. Well done, BYD.
The base Tesla doesn't have V2L, an opening sunroof, an opening blind for the sunroof, a hatchback so the Tesla Y is another $13k and still doesn't have the aforementioned. The Model 3 is very hard to get in and out of compared to the Atto3. I drove all 3 (Atto, Tes 3 and Tes Y but ordered the Atto3.

I agree with you Mat, this truly looks like it has some Star Wars presence. I can see multiple millennium falcons tilted vertically as the air vents. This interior is funky for sure.
Despite Mat Watson making fun of it here and there. It is an absolutely brilliant car. Practical, for daily use and for the pocket. Design is good. Range is good. We are not buying a race car. This is day to day car. Things that are annoying ? He's just nitpicking.
The most important thing to note is that BYD owns a BLADE battery company in China that does not require coolant and cannot EXPLODE. They are now supplying TESLA with BLADE batteries. So like MG SAIC their cars will get better with each generation. Watch out Euro and USA manufacturers.
youtuber 'serpentza' re-posted videos from Chinese BYD EV owners and Blade batteries around about the time Matt's review was also released. Interesting features.
Agree, but blade batteries do still need coolant (these are liquid cooled) but they are much less thermally sensitive than other options. The Nail Penetration test showing a lack of thermal runaway was really impressive. Cant wait for my Atto to arrive next week :)
The only things surprised me is the price. BYD Atto 3’s equivalent “Yuan plus” highest config is sold for 18,000 GBP in China. At that price point, it’s quite a no-brainer but when the price doubles in foreign market, yeah… it suddenly find itself in an entire different market segment and frankly struggling to compete.

If it was a Land Rover or a Jaguar, you wouldn't mind a lot of negative stuff and should consider it 'okey' but since it's an Chinese built car, it's always bad and there are 'better option' cars. I myself I live in Western- Europe and everything with these kind of options can cost you a lot. But hey at least, it's not a Chinese car, right? No, it still is since almost all the batteries are built in China and almost all the brands use Chinese built batteries (yes, even your British brand car).
Owner from NZ. Traveled 9070km since late August last year. Traveled with a mixture of highway and town driving =13.5 kw.h/ per 100km (average over 9070 km) , with a 60.4 kw battery = 447km. Not 190 miles (305 km) as tested by Matt. We also have up to 4 people in the car more weight.
The Atto 3 is without a doubt the most popular electric car here in Malaysia - it was launched in December and already 1,000 units have been delivered - which is quite a feat because the electric infrastructure here is not as well developed as in the UK.
Electric infrastructure in Peninsular Malaysia is world class... better than many European countries. And energy prices are also superb cheap. The only lack at the moment is the lack of a charging station for EV. Why Elon Musk choice Malaysia and ignore India and Indonesia that woe Elon because Elon impresses with Energy infrastructure available in Malaysia and how easy he can build thousands of Tesla Charging stations anywhere in Malaysia since almost area covered with higher quality of electrical cable and provide ready space for charging station anywhere Elon want to build it.

I get that BYD is a big manufacturer, but relatively unheard of in the UK car industry, so people would be taking a risk going for the Atto3 without any benefit.
There is no bad car, but there is a bad car for the price. The starting price of this car in the UK is more than double of that in China (around 15700 GBP). I don't think BYD is to be blamed for this because Range Rover's price is more than doubled in China than that in the UK (because of transport and taxes etc.). With all the specs and a price comparable with Dacia, this car would be a killer of the car market in the UK. The comments on the driving performance are spot on, but again, this car is meant to be a highly affordable EV and you get what you pay for.
I had the opportunity to sit in (touch, bite, massage, tickle etc) quite a few new chinese cars at the Brussels Motorshow and I have to say I was very impressed (and seemingly many others, too). They actually look good, their interior are albeit weird seemed to be sturdy and well built, they have decent tech, all electrified with long range autonomy. Apart from the obvious concerns of future reliability (we will see in 5-10 years), data privacy (khm) and certain oddities like the occassional weird lady shouting instructions and random information from the dashbord in a very stereotypical chinese accent, the future looks promising for these cars (MGs are now selling better than Hondas in continental Europe). And it comes from a country where 15 years ago riding a donkey was still the second most popular mode of transport...y'know when Škoda's were affordable and Korean cars were built by paper and recycled plastic waste - how times have changed.

@@TsLeng Word. Always witj the 0-60 nonsense. It's intentionally toned down on the Atto 3, so the kick is not so agressive on the passengers, and I'm grateful for this. Really those days watching the car reviews you constantly have to sort out the bs nobody cares about.

Wow. Is that car famous in your country, Marnus?
The base Tesla doesn't have V2L, an opening sunroof, an opening blind for the sunroof, a hatchback so the Tesla Y is another $13k and still doesn't have the aforementioned.
The Model 3 is very hard to get in and out of compared to the Atto3.
I drove all 3 (Atto, Tes 3 and Tes Y but ordered the Atto3.

These have been out for about 8 months here in NZ, good looking cars and plenty of kit for the price, there are obvious cost cutting measures visible though, such as lack of hydraulic frunk. Also, a lot less expensive here, ($55k nzd = £25k)
Really seems like they're pricing it in each market at what the max is they believe they can get for it there...
If this price is sold in the UK market, It will definitely be the king of the EV. It is much more expensive around 14 K pound Which is too much ridiculous!
In China, it's called Yuan Plus and the price is ¥139k rmb (about £16k GBP).
Why would you need or want a hydraulic bonnet, it doesn't even have a useable frunk?
@@jay-uo2bi It still has things you need access to, like windscreen refill etc in there, and lets be honest, how much does a pair of gas struts cost these days ? $30 or so? It's the little details :)

I agree with you Mat, this truly looks like it has some Star Wars presence. I can see multiple millennium falcons tilted vertically as the air vents. This interior is funky for sure.
This BYD Atto 3 is basically like GTA IV version of Ford Espace.
Despite Mat Watson making fun of it here and there. It is an absolutely brilliant car. Practical, for daily use and for the pocket. Design is good. Range is good. We are not buying a race car. This is day to day car. Things that are annoying ? He's just nitpicking.
Had the car here in the UK now for the past three weeks and really enjoying the car. Over the air updates are great.
It seems a lot more expensive in the UK I’m from New Zealand and the base model starts at around 27509.00 GBP and we have 2 different battery options

10000 sold in Thailand, and counting
The only things surprised me is the price. BYD Atto 3’s equivalent “Yuan plus” highest config is sold for 18,000 GBP in China. At that price point, it’s quite a no-brainer but when the price doubles in foreign market, yeah… it suddenly find itself in an entire different market segment and frankly struggling to compete.
Transportation costs and tariffs, for example, Rolls Royce Phantom sells for £ 11.00000 in China
UK gov charge about 10k GBP for every electric vehicles for the oil/road tax
It is simple, import fee 30%(10000)+freight fee 4000+dealer profits 20%(7000).

Atto 3 is a very strange name. Here in Brazil it started to be sold recently as Yuan Plus.
no,it's unlaw car,news had said
in China too
If it was a Land Rover or a Jaguar, you wouldn't mind a lot of negative stuff and should consider it 'okey' but since it's an Chinese built car, it's always bad and there are 'better option' cars.
The UK's charging infrastructure is terrible in most parts of the UK.
Looks like EV is a scam as for now. I still cannot see future with EV eventho currently owning a hybrid.
It's also popular in thailand.

I have an MG4 EV and my friend has a BYD Atto 3. Recently we did a temporary swap and drove each other's car for 1000 Km.We agreed that both cars are excellent giving excellent value but the Atto 3 was definitely marginally better on most counts, but only if the original tyres were changed for a better quality, the same as the MG. Good tyres transformed the drive quality of the Atto 3 from good to exceptional. The heat pump would be good in cold old UK. Your comments on the Blade battery technology and warranty would be interesting.

3. All the USB C port is very high power, from what I can test, it output at least 65W.
4. Since I live in Thailand the weather is about the surface of the sun the AC is pretty weak
5. DC Charging is a bit slow normally if start under 45% it will go up to 80KW for about 10mins then drop to 53KW or go as low as 39KW if the weather is extremely hot.
The most important thing is the price! In China, this Atto3 is about 17k to 20K......

@@tren133 So the problem is why the model y in the UK price is so much overpriced even after price reduction a few months ago?
If the model Y long range of price in the UK is around 44k That will be normal and acceptable. In China, model y is for people of the middle class. It is not a luxury car anymore. But in the UK it looks like a luxury cat which is not.
@@tren133 The most ridiculous thing is if you choose 20 inch tire in the UK you need to pay 2100pound In comparison with the price of 950 pound in the China market, tell me why? I was told by a UK Tesla, sales said, because it's the UK market strategy. 😂😂
AFAIK, in the UK the Atto 3 costs about £36,000, that is pretty pricey. Also there are a lot of better known brands which are around the same price: VW ID3, Renault Megane Etech, Kia Niro EV etc.

Now we are waiting for your review on BYD Han, ZEEKR 001 and NIO ET7
“Plenty of other good electric cars available right now” says it all. With a starting price of £36k people have plenty of other options…VW ID3, Kia Niro EV to name two.
Somehow this car is weirdly popular amongst the riches here in India
