    I have a couple of Hermes accessories. However, my pride will never allow me to beg a brand to take my money and “let” me buy a specific bag. Ever! I pity anyone who is willing to play this game. It’s embarrassing really.

  • @dfarnsworth243
    @dfarnsworth243 10 месяцев назад +73

    These bags are only in demand because of the game. My husband was right when he said they are brilliant because they created demand by telling rich woman they can’t have something and that makes it want it more. If the game ended so would the demand.

  • @skittlezzify1

    In my opinion the issue isn't the pre-spend requirement, but that the pre-spend doesn't guarantee the "reward". Its doesn't value customers, if Hermes doesn't deliver their end of the bargain to those same customers. It becomes more like extortive/exploitative if they create an environment where honest to god customers feel cheated and disheartened.

    If people could buy the bags in a fair system it would certainly reduce the reseller situation

    An Hermes SA told me that the “game” started because SAs do not get paid commission on quota bags, so to make up for this they tend to “save” the quota bags for their customers who have made them money through commissions on other items. Then they reward those customers with a bag that they don’t get paid on because they know those customers will still come back later to buy more items that they will earn commissions on. Anyone know if this is true?

    • @jadevu904
      @jadevu904 10 месяцев назад +8

      I believe this is somewhat true, the SA wants to keep the relationship with the client long term. Everyone is different, the SA would like someone come all the time buying things not just 1 time and never comes back. Just depend on how the SA personality is and how you treat them. I watched this channel, the poor lady was heartbroken because she bought so much things every year and still did not get anything then they reassigned her to a new SA, everything resets. Shopping should be relaxing and fun, don't stress over these people, they can be hurtful. In 2024, there are so many ways to purchase something you like, get whatever you desire.

    • @melissaleslie7755
      @melissaleslie7755 10 месяцев назад +10

      My SA indirectly communicated the same thing. Also, each store (US) has monthly, quarterly and yearly sales targets to meet. The store cannot meet these sales targets on quota bag sales alone. Have to push the sales of other items.

    • @zoecarterluxe
      @zoecarterluxe 10 месяцев назад

      @@melissaleslie7755 I feel that’s so unfair to the SA to not pay them commission on such an expensive bag.

      I had a Kelly 32 bag, which I sold, mainly because I wasn't using it at all. The quality was superb, but it just seemed too conspicuous to wear every day. I'm thinking of maybe going for a smaller size next time, maybe a 25 or 28 and see how that goes.

    Excellent video. I started my own journey in January 2022. Took me over 1.5 years to finally receive my offer. $40k prespend. In hindsight it was absurd how I was treated by Hermes. I became completely resentful each time I went in there expecting to drop thousand on random things that I did not want. Had I just invested the $40k instead, I coukd have easily been able to buy resale and get the exact color and hardware combo that I wanted. After all that trouble, I ended up selling the bag. It was too dark for me and there was defective wrinkling in one corner. It drove me nuts and was a reminder of my long and frustrating journey. I now shop at my own pace and don’t let the sa dictate what I’m to spend my money on. I mainly purchase through resellers now. I also find Hermes not super user friendly. The Birkin is super heavy to lug around. The Kelly lock is annoying to get in and out of. I’ll likely eventually sell them all and just use some quiet luxury brand. Having been there and done that, I suggest that you don’t bother to start your journey.

    I started shopping with Hermes last February and got my first quota bag in October. I did go into store regularly and shopped with the same SA. I have to say I do find shopping at Hermes quite stressful, stock is low in all departments and any bag is hard to get. It is very rare that you get the colour combination that you want so patience and compromise is key! Looking forward to watching your “journey”

    I dropped a lot of money in Hermes and created a wish list a few times over 3 years and nothing, the stuff I've bought I wanted and now the is game over for me because I don't want anything else right now. I was told the probability of getting a Birkin/Kelly is around 2000 customers to 1 bag on their wish lists. I would rather pay hefty Chanel prices.

    While I understand the thought that Hermes wants to sell their bag to customers who will “treasure” their bags, I also question why a retailer/manufacturer should have any say over what I do with my purchase after they have received my money. Our transaction is over at that moment. In principle, I do not like the thought that any retailer/manufacturer are manipulating my use of the product (beyond the fact that they are already excluding most people with their prices).

      You need to think about what you’re implying. You’re implying that you should reap the benefits of their hard work, designs, originality, branding-everything they’ve worked for-so you can make money from what they sold you? And you did nothing essentially? That’s exactly why you likely won’t be getting one of those bags.

  • @Munchkina
    @Munchkina 10 месяцев назад +2

    Quota bags have always been in demand, there was that infamous sketch from SATC where Samantha tried to get a birkin. So whilst there has been increased interest from social media in my opinion ‘the game’ is certainly not a recent thing.
    You also see people talking about ‘Birkin bait’ i.e. items that will get you noticed faster.
    Does their system really work when consignment stores have so many store fresh bags?
    I also think that they do randomly give quota bags out for precisely the reason of being able to say that they don’t discriminate.
    It’s interesting because as you say, the loyalty aspect is something seen across luxury. The main reason that my partner got me a Rolex was so that he could have a more diverse spend profile as that apparently helps in obtaining rarer pieces for example.
    In my opinion it’s only a problem if a SA is knowingly deceiving someone by inducing them to buy when they know that they have no chance in getting a quota bag.
    Obviously pre-spend is always implied and there’s no guarantee either way but I do wonder if there are people abusing their position in order to make their sales targets/get commission.
    Looking forward to seeing how your relationship with the brand evolves as I’m also trying to decide the spec on my dream Hermes bag.

    Steph, I think you did a really great job explaining this. I feel like a lot of people are villainizing Hermes because it is so hard to get a bag. I agree, if you only have so many bags to give out, you’re going to invest in your most loyal and valuable customers. Usually a small percentage of people will make up the majority of your revenue. Those are the people who you want to prioritize. And it’s hard for an SA to justify to their manager how they offered something to a non loyal customer vs someone who purchases all the time. Maybe people don’t realize this but other brands such as CHANEL definitely give special treatment to people who come in regularly, shop, or get to know the staff. I go to Paris and nothingggg is in stock. It’s all been sold to people with SAs the day it’s launches. A lot of hard to find pieces are all sold in pre-orders these days. For example, a lot of the new Louis Vuitton men’s collection items are literally out of stock the day that they go live on the website. Every single brand is doing this. You need to have a good relationship with a sales associate and be somebody who regularly shops from them. Scarcity is a big part of luxury and high demand. The game is fun or not even noticeable to those clientele who have the money to play

    • @LuxAndLove123
      @LuxAndLove123 10 месяцев назад

      So true! I think so many people don’t understand that! It’s fair this way actually. If I’m loyal to a brand, wear and use what they sell, I totally think that it’s normal if I get a head up on certain items. In the luxury world,l it’s common practice. Most people that really shop luxury understand that. Now what is difficult is to find the right SA that will truly make the experience nicer!

To me their strategy does make sense and whilst not perfect, it is always good to see loyal customers being valued. People online just dont take into account that Hermes is only able to produce X amount of these bags annually. They just want "their" bag and complain about it like spoilt children.

    When/if I’m ready for a Hermes bag, I think I’ll opt for the preloved market. There are some reputable preloved sellers and I can choose the exact size/colour/hardware that I want, instead of pre-spending a lot at Hermes in hope of getting offered something I would like. 😂 But when I say “ready” to own a Hermes, I’m thinking about my personal maturity (not age, more about aura). I want to truly own/carry the bag, and not have the bag carry me, if you get what I mean! 😆

    Thank you for speaking logic!!! I also don’t think there is a game to play. Though I do enjoy Hermes products. I am 2 handbags deep after about four years with the brand and about 20k in spend across the globe, but no Kelly or Birkin. I also don’t ask for them as I am not ready for that yet.
    I truly believe they just want to gate keep the bags so they don’t flood the resale market and end up with buyers who will enjoy them. So, yes. I totally agree with you. I do also think there is a certain level of clientele Hermes desires - which is smart business. Return customers who keep items are far more valuable to the brand than customers chasing trends.
    I also think they have the most gorgeous shoes for designer - and affordable in comparison to other designer brands. Far less flashy as well.
    My favorite part of my Hermes collection is that the items do feel luxurious and they bring a level of excitement to everyday things. I appreciate the craftsmanship and I really enjoy my collection - and practically nobody knows its designer!
    I think the game is only a game for those who see the quota bags as an accomplishment or a finish line. For those of us just living our lives and enjoying our purchases, there’s no game, there’s just normal acquisitions though desire for certain items to compliment our lives.

    Great take on the issue. I can understand the position Hermes is in with so much interest vs. a very limited stock. I didn’t fall down the luxury rabbit hole until later in life, and have been kept quite busy with Chanel, LV, VCA, etc. There are so many wonderful treasures to lust after, that Hermes quota bags just haven’t tempted me enough to put any effort into acquiring one. And the “journey” thing that so many speak of puts me off. But your explanation/viewpoint makes perfect sense.
    And like you, I am interested in some of the high quality but lesser known luxury brands as well. I have Delvaux on my list, but have yet to purchase. But I have one bag each from Bulgari and Lanvin, and WOW, I am impressed. Definitely want more from those two. 😊

A friend bought a new Rolex a while ago and wasn’t given the certificate with it for 12 months to prevent him reselling it. Maybe Hermes should do something similar?

To a degree, I can understand why they operate this way but overall, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Hermes is the only bag brand where you can still profit massively on the secondary market
    goyard don't too much about but they still sell well
    I think the bottom has fallen from Chanel now
    Chanel price rises have now destroyed their secondary prices, great time for the secondary buyer
    LV,Gucci,YSL,Dior,Celine, Chloe all losses on the secondary market generally, depends on the bag

    Hi there - I definitely can afford a Hermes bag - but with all the hype over the past years of designers real or fake and showing off ….
    I am rather very happy to downplay the bag / clothes and look for good jewelry pieces to accentuate the quality of my outfits : great craftsmanship in bag - no label, very good fitting cut and good material in clothes, less make up
    good shoes and voila you look greatly understated, exceptional! Wouldn’t stand in a queue either

    I visited the store and was put off even with the SA's attitude. Ok this is way before the lawsuit, their attitude i would say is rude. Not all but a few is enough to put me off. Actually, if they are not keen to sell why even bother to open a store? Here i am not even talking about quota handbag and not even near that. They do not want to provide anymore of the SA's phone number and was told if they have stock and so happened one is there, good luck. Good for people to stop their journey frankly, it is not just not easy but a pain in the as... Thanks for sharing. 🤗🤩

    Hermes has gone too far with the game in my opinion. We don't have a store in my country even so I'll have to travel to get any. I went to both stores in Berlin and the one in Prague wanted a Garden party bag but all claimed they have no bags at all. Like who believes that? A quota bag seems impossible now if you can't even get any other bag either. 😢 I like the design and quality but never have I been in a situation like this.

    Steph you are a breath of fresh air with your takes on it! Us Hermès lovers are called stupid, desperate, whatever they call us! 😂 I feel that if you are the type of customer that is truly enjoying the brand, you experience less of that kind of frustration around the brand. Sure the bags are hard to get but I feel that so many don’t even comprehend that they are not mass produced and , at the moment, the demand is much more than what they are able to produce. It’s not a fake tactic, they cannot get these bags out more quicker at the moment. It happened more than once that my SA offered me a bag saying that it was not necessarily my turn. But she knows how much I love the brand as a whole, and she simply wanted me to get that particular bag. I wear Hermès on the daily, she told me she had clients that buy a ton and never wear anything Hermès. I think she can clearly see through them. The brand wants long term customers, they don’t see the short term customers the same way I think. For a business perspective, it’s what you want, the customers that will continue to spend even when this craziness around these bags will slow down….because it will slow down !

    Its not a game. How you connect with SA, how you present yourself in store ( dont behave entitled but gentle and patient) its not about how rich you look.
