I’ve had the CSR since 9/2016, and despite never having set foot in a priority pass lounge, I’ve found it to be indispensable. I don’t put nearly as much spend on it since getting the Amex Gold, but the less tangible benefits like 6-hour trip delay are really nice to know are there. I think the primary rental CDW is especially undersold. That’s huge and, as far as I’m aware, unique to Chase (CSR, CSP, United Explorer and Club). It’s worth noting that the other cards specifically exclude luxury/specialty vehicles, but CSR covers any car up to $75k. I already use food delivery services, so the DoorDash credit is essentially face value. DashPass is whatever because I find the list of eligible restaurants in my area to be disappointing. The question for me will be whether the Lyft benefits are worth $40 a year. I use Lyft, but not all the time; basically airport rides and going to bars that aren’t walkable. Hard to put a value on Lyft Pink, but if that pickup priority thing actually works, in a smaller city where I am, it could really come in handy in situations where there aren’t many available drivers, or demand overwhelms local supple, like when a couple flights arrive around the same time. I guess I still view the changes negatively because I’ve always valued Chase’s simplicity over Amex’s games, but realistically it is probably still worth keeping for me. The CSP, in my opinion (and with the exception of primary CDW as noted above) is destined to become today’s version of the pre-refresh Amex Green: weak earning and benefits for its class.
Many months ago i asked what the big deal about the chase cards was. With transfer to the partners the rewards were still less than 3%. The navy federal more rewards amex beats that. Just use the cash back to buy your tickets. i saw that you mentioned the Wells Fargo card.the wells Fargo propel card is a copy of the navy federal more rewards card. In other words, it's the same benefits package because it's an American Express card. But they don't have the benefits of real American Express top tier cards. There's a middle ground with Amex between 2 cents Business/First Class flights, and 1.25 Charles Schwab. I get 1.5 cents, waiting for bonus transfer rates, or using the travel portal with the Business Platinum. It is complicated, and takes patience, and probably only worth it with high spend on the Gold or Green card.

But for me I feel like I have to keep this card for another year till I use up all my points and then jump ship to either Amex or Citi.
I think you can keep CSR if you can take advantage of new Door Dash and Lyft perks on regular basis. My problem right now is I have Amex Plat, Gold, CSR, and US Bank Altitude Reserve. I need to make some serious calculations to decide which card(s) to cancel before end of April.
The Ink Preferred wasn’t easy to get in spite of a long impeccable relationship, an 825 credit score and having had the CSP and being an authorized user on CSR with my wife. They needed proof of business. By the time I got the necessary documentation, I had to apply another time because the first one expired and got yet a 2nd hard inquiry. The 80.000 were worth it all though👍
That's odd. My credit score was around 740, minimal relationship, tiny business (less than $10K business income) and I was approved with no proof of business needed. [shrug]
If you have the CSR now and can still have the $450 annual for another year, it makes no sense to rage quit Chase. You’re getting the same annual fee but more benefits for another year. Reevaluate after next year and by then who knows, maybe chase changes things for the better.
I'm an AMEX user for sure. Works for me with there different cards such as Hilton and Charles Schwab. My business spend benefits me with AMEX points. Don't have any Chase cards. As far as Wells Fargo, I agree they are not the best and true, if you have money they are your friends, if not then you are just an algorithm to them. I do have there AMEX card because I like the streaming bonus points.
You made my day when you said the Propel Card does not count as your first AMEX card! I am keeping my eyes out for that offer they give out to first time AMEX card holders 👀
How to find it: www.asksebby.com/blog/how-to-use-the-cardmatch-tool-to-find-better-sign-up-offers I usually include it in the "roundup" videos when new targeting comes out.
This was a super helpful video! I just got the Chase Freedom to complete my trifecta. Was about to upgrade my CSP to CSR and then the announcement. Chase wouldn't give me the $450 price. I'm between the Citi Prestige and Capitol One Venture. Leaning towards Venture.
Stay away from the Prestige. Card is worthless. And since we are talking about Citi, I expect that it will become even more worthless in the future (if that is even possible).
Thought about the Capital One Venture card ... I wanted the CSR until I heard the news ... so guess I’m done with Chase after I get the CF and complete my trifecta.
Hi,,,I work as a hand-carry courier and I have to travel by plane several times a year,,,,, most of the flights are either thru United or American so for that I would like to ask you what credit card you recommend to apply to take advantage of this job,,, keep in mind that my company book the flights and hotel stay,,,, God Bless You
What credit cards you use doesn't matter since your company does all the bookings. But I can recommend which FFP to accrue the miles to: Alaska for AA flights, and Asiana for United ones. You only need 40,000 miles through TWO years to qualify for Star Alliance Gold which is valid for at least TWO years, and once you hit 500,000 miles, you get lifetime Star Alliance Gold status.
@ask sebby I currently have the Capital One SAVOR ($95 annual fee) and Amex Gold Delta skymiles ($95). My first year is coming to an end and my plan was always to downgrade before the second year. But both cards have been good to me and raised my cc limits. I’ve heard of people randomly getting their accounts closed and I was wondering if a downgrade could lead to a “strike” on my profile. I always look for cards with downgrade paths, is it dangerous to always downgrade with a certain bank? I think I would create a bad reputation. Please help, I wanna keeping cashing out on bonuses, guilt free!! Lol
If i can use the doordash credit this year, Pay my annual fee- then use the credit again in 2021 before the next annual fee...technically thats 120 doordash credit for 100 more in annual fee assuming I cancel in the following year
If I have a CSR should I apply for the CSP get the sign up bonuses and then down grade or is that considered two separate accounts? Or is my only option to just down grade? Hope this makes sense.
I'm going to be looking into the altitude reserve for my premium option. I'll keep my CIP to be able to transfer my UR points out and to be able to get referrals. Luckily my annual fee wont be due till December 2020 so I have time to plan.
The 75k offer seems to appear everytime I visit the site on Chrome, trying to wait for that possible 100-125k offer though since the offer period just ended.
I am only seeing the 75k offer when I am on my work WiFi or work VPN. I don't know what that means but when I log in to my home WiFi on the same computer I only get the public 60k offer.
Sebastian, kinda off topic - not really but I currently have a Citi Double Cash and I've eyeballed the Prestige. What would you say is a good third for a trifecta? I'm thinking Premiere or Aadvantage? Thanks!
Probably skip in that case. If you do anything that generates income on the side (any side hustle at all) that should qualify as a sole-prop: www.asksebby.com/blog/do-you-qualify-for-a-business-credit-card
Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, or was answered by you already in another video (of it's obvious and not worth asking.) After 4 years, how do I go about getting a sign up bonus from a sapphire card if I already have a sapphire card? Cancel and reapply to get sign on bonus? Can I just downgrade (from CSR to CSP)?
@@AskSebby Oh right I can have multiple freedoms cards if I wanted. For some reason I brain farted and thought I could only have one of each freedom card (which I already have). Thanks Sebastian!
I already have the Plat and wanted the reserve but now i dont think so since i dont travel enough to take the full advantage of both cards especially with the increase fee on the reserve. I think i will go with either the freedom or the preferred.
I just got approved the sapphire preferred. "just for you"on the chase app pre-approved me with 25k limit even though I'm at 9/24- instant approval! Will downgrade after the first year
Great video for those who don't do math and just go by face value. I have the CSR and yesterday I used your calculator and I put zero on most benefits except GE and the $300 travel credit. Just on spend,no travel. I came out ahead $115. Also this was while working on 3 SUBs.
Ask Sebby yes. Every case is and will be different. I almost never use Uber or lyft. Also reading through the fine print, saw this is only a 1 year subscription and if you don't cancel it you are on the hook for a years subscription from lyft pink.
The updated credits actually benefit me MORE since I am a grad student who travels for work however with only a year of credit history Chase denied me for the CSP so I don't think I should even try for the CSR. :(
Is you credit score above 700? & what’s you’re income like? I was going to apply for the CSP but I also have only about a year of history. After reading your comment I’m scared I might get denied too.
Pathing is usually: 1) secured/student for 1 year 2) Freedom/CFU (starter Chase card) for 1-3 months 3) CSP/CSR There are exceptions obviously but that's the risk-adverse / maximize approval odds, pathing.
Could you explain a little more about which AMEX cards make you ineligible for the 100K Platinum offer? Are all cobranded cards (Delta, Hilton, ect.) exempt or just the Wells Fargo Propel.
I also want to know this since I have a Delta Reserve and Navy Federal AMEX. I imagine the NavyFed one is exempt but I only got the Delta Gold because of the 60k signup bonus back in 2018 (upgraded to the Reserve last year for the upgrade bonus/new perks on Jan 30).
Generally, all of them issued and ran directly from Amex (i.e., anything you see on their site). I'ts not ineligible but... very very unlikely to be targeted.
@@jcewata Navy Fed shouldn't count (not directly ran by Amex). Delta would count though. Ineligible is a poor choice of words on my end. It's just extremely less likely to get targeted (you're already a customer and they use the 100k to "bring you in").
I generally redeem with transfer partners so have my set up currently pretty complete with CSR/CF/IBC/IBU, AmEx Plat/Gold/BBP, and Citi Premier/DC/R+. The overlapping transfer partners have been adequate for my redemptions so far (Air France, Virgin Atlantic, and Singapore Airlines) that i dont discriminate between the 3 issuers and mainly focus on which card will give me the most return. Will be replacing CSR with CSP though while shifting travel to Premier card and dining to Gold card. Not worried about travel protection so much so maybe even look at Prestige at some point down the line.
@@AskSebby thanks for the suggestion! There are a few cards that i have "on radar" for now for future consideration and will add this one. Future sign-up bonuses looking to be one-offs so really going to wait for good offers before jumping on one. Always appreciate the quality of the content in your videos 👌
Chanh Le just curious... wouldn’t it be better to PC it to a plain sapphire instead of the preferred? That way you don’t have to pay the annual fee and you can still transfer partners (unless plain sapphire doesn’t have this feature)
So after all this, unless you live near SFO and you don't want the hassles of AMEX gimmicks or sub-prime cards you might as well stick with the CSR. Which is likely what I'll do. Oh well. Thanks for the options.
Richard Forester exactly, and a lot of place don’t accept Amex were visa is pretty much world wide, I thought about Amex plat but I travel to my home country a lot and they for sure don’t accept Amex, I see positive value with CSR so I might pay one more year of annual fee and see how it goes after it cost 100 dollar more, DoorDash credit is the only useful value for me because I order pick ups a lot, but not Lyft.
End of the day, it's about running numbers and seeing which cards (if any) give you value. I'm actually happy with the CSR changes: www.asksebby.com/credit-cards/chase-sapphire-preferred-vs-chase-sapphire-reserve-calculator
I got the green card in I think October 2019. I want to replace it with the platinum card now though. How long should I wait to make the switch? And will I still be eligible for a sign on bonus for the platinum after I reach min spend even though I collected a sign on bonus from the green card?
You basically have to wait the full year minimum, 11 months is where the green card will be able to be upgraded. You will likely receive an upgrade bonus offer. I got my gold card in December 2018. Upgraded to the Platinum December 2019 for the 60k bonus. Will open the green card for the bonus plus 3x categories to compliment the platinum. And lastly upgrade the green to a gold once again.
Astro Star My understanding is that if you product change the green card to the platinum card, you would not be eligible to receive the sign up bonus on the platinum. It’s recommended that you apply for the card to get the sign up bonus rather than product changing/foregoing the bonus (at least in regards to AmEx). Most people wait until after their annual fee hits before they cancel their card.
Keep the Green until 1 year is over (otherwise you risk blacklisting / getting bonus clawed back). You can apply for the Platinum right now; different bonuses so they have nothing to do with each other. If you want to talk strategy: www.asksebby.com/free-card-consultation
Probably not because it's not your account and technically you didn't open it so you aren't bound by those rules. But it would be safe to ask AMEX directly.
Most people looking for an alternative are looking for a general travel card with flexibility vs. locking into a hotel currency. Most people would also take 3x Hyatt (3x UR = 3x Hyatt) over 4x Marriott. Even as a Marriott Platinum, i'd take 3x Hyatt all day.
The backlash towards Chase's decision on the CSR is a bit much but understandable. For me, I actually come up on top since I was using Dashpass and Doordash at least 2-3 times a month already. Lyft doesn't really help me. I'll see if the card is worth it when it comes to renewal in Oct 2020.
Lyft 10x is actually getting me more value and makes it a no-brainer (for me). I generally don't mind walking unless it's 25+ minutes or late at night.
If you're willing to disclose, I'm interested in what your credit score looks like churning through all these credit cards all the time. I can't imagine it's over 800 doing this constant chasing of welcome bonuses. But I could be wrong.
It floats in the 750 to 775 range. Once you have a base of cards (average age of accounts) it becomes less of an issue. Inquiries have had little impact. I probably would be in the 800 range but I value trips (for paying my rent).
I’m still going for the CSR. Effective annual fee is only $250 not counting Global Entry/TSA Pre. For a VISA Infinite card with those travel partners, it’s the way to go if u travel internationally. Currently have CFU and CF, so CSR the only piece missing for the trifecta.
Make sure that you get positive expected value; that you're getting value on the $250 effective AF: www.asksebby.com/credit-cards/chase-sapphire-preferred-vs-chase-sapphire-reserve-calculator

The 80.000 were worth it all though👍
That's odd. My credit score was around 740, minimal relationship, tiny business (less than $10K business income) and I was approved with no proof of business needed. [shrug]
I had a hard time for the CIP as well.
Mo Mo glad I wasn’t the only one. I gave up after first rejection. Chase customer for two decades , CSR , 767 CS even obtained an EIN number.
did you apply as a sole proprietorship? I did for my side business and it worked just fine. No need for complicated "proof of business" and so on.
Mitsu Hadeishi yes that’s exactly what I did. I’m starting to think it’s based on where you live to be honest.
I guess I’m one of the only people that like the CSR changes
The 10x Lyft actually gets me MORE value :)
(as a non-car owning, city living, millennial)
I get the fee waived anyway so its just an extra bonus for me
If you have the CSR now and can still have the $450 annual for another year, it makes no sense to rage quit Chase.
I have the Chase Slate card. I know it doesn't offer that much in benefits, but I don't use it that often. It works for me.
You made my day when you said the Propel Card does not count as your first AMEX card! I am keeping my eyes out for that offer they give out to first time AMEX card holders 👀
How to find it: www.asksebby.com/blog/how-to-use-the-cardmatch-tool-to-find-better-sign-up-offers
I usually include it in the "roundup" videos when new targeting comes out.
Venture also tends to be harder to get, so solid pickup: ruclips.net/video/QKbmA8Q0cw4/видео.html
Stay away from the Prestige. Card is worthless. And since we are talking about Citi, I expect that it will become even more worthless in the future (if that is even possible).
Damn ... Ritz got rid of the $100 airline credit. Major bummer.....
Thought about the Capital One Venture card ... I wanted the CSR until I heard the news ... so guess I’m done with Chase after I get the CF and complete my trifecta.
I'm at 9/24 with Chase and about to try for the Ink business.😜.Pray for me.
Quick question, opened a credit card back in November 2018 and I’m at 5/24. So does this mean when November 2020 comes around would a slot open?
Jaeho-yes but I tend to wait until the following month. Just in case.
Yes, but like Sheila mentioned, you might want to wait until Dec (de-risking purposes).
Thank you to the both of you! God bless!
Lol
"Randomly closed" is usually people doing stuff against the terms and services, like self-referral: ruclips.net/video/4Xyr_vvBq4Q/видео.html
If i can use the doordash credit this year,
Pay my annual fee- then use the credit again in 2021 before the next annual fee...technically thats 120 doordash credit for 100 more in annual fee assuming I cancel in the following year
Nice video man. Thanks for linking me this
Timely video. Loved it
that hello is so awkward hahaha
If I have a CSR should I apply for the CSP get the sign up bonuses and then down grade or is that considered two separate accounts? Or is my only option to just down grade? Hope this makes sense.
One Sapphire Rule? www.asksebby.com/blog/chase-adds-new-restrictions-to-sapphire-credit-cards-the-one-sapphire-rule
I'm going to be looking into the altitude reserve for my premium option. I'll keep my CIP to be able to transfer my UR points out and to be able to get referrals. Luckily my annual fee wont be due till December 2020 so I have time to plan.
I would also put your phone bill on the CIP for the phone insurance (depending on the other cards you have).
Oddly I have been seeing a 75k AmEx Platinum sign up bonus recently, but only when I log in at work with an incognito browser.
Terry Steiner I’m considering it
The 75k offer seems to appear everytime I visit the site on Chrome, trying to wait for that possible 100-125k offer though since the offer period just ended.
I'd wait for 100k if you're not an Amex customer: www.asksebby.com/blog/how-to-use-the-cardmatch-tool-to-find-better-sign-up-offers
Jumped on the 75k offer this month on the platinum. Tried card match and it was still the same now I gotta go find 5k to spend.
I am only seeing the 75k offer when I am on my work WiFi or work VPN. I don't know what that means but when I log in to my home WiFi on the same computer I only get the public 60k offer.
What is outsize value? What is hard mode?
Altitude Reserve for me.
Sebastian, kinda off topic - not really but I currently have a Citi Double Cash and I've eyeballed the Prestige. What would you say is a good third for a trifecta? I'm thinking Premiere or Aadvantage? Thanks!
Premier depending on your spending. AA is a good pickup but mostly for grabbing the bonus.
@@AskSebby Cool. Thanks!
Chase ink are business cards. What if you don’t have a business?
Probably skip in that case.
If you do anything that generates income on the side (any side hustle at all) that should qualify as a sole-prop: www.asksebby.com/blog/do-you-qualify-for-a-business-credit-card
Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, or was answered by you already in another video (of it's obvious and not worth asking.)
After 4 years, how do I go about getting a sign up bonus from a sapphire card if I already have a sapphire card? Cancel and reapply to get sign on bonus? Can I just downgrade (from CSR to CSP)?
Downgrade to a Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited, and then apply for the CSR.
@@AskSebby Oh right I can have multiple freedoms cards if I wanted. For some reason I brain farted and thought I could only have one of each freedom card (which I already have). Thanks Sebastian!
@@chauchaukemtienganh9814 If you want to talk strategy moving forwards :) www.asksebby.com/free-card-consultation
I already have the Plat and wanted the reserve but now i dont think so since i dont travel enough to take the full advantage of both cards especially with the increase fee on the reserve. I think i will go with either the freedom or the preferred.
Run the numbers on CSP vs. CSR here: www.asksebby.com/credit-cards/chase-sapphire-preferred-vs-chase-sapphire-reserve-calculator
I just got approved the sapphire preferred. "just for you"on the chase app pre-approved me with 25k limit even though I'm at 9/24- instant approval!
Will downgrade after the first year
Yep, pre-approvals get around 5/24. I'm hesitant to do a video on it though since Chase might see it.
"Someone fix this, quick!"
alarms go on Not off if you hear it about 8 min. mark
Great video for those who don't do math and just go by face value. I have the CSR and yesterday I used your calculator and I put zero on most benefits except GE and the $300 travel credit. Just on spend,no travel. I came out ahead $115. Also this was while working on 3 SUBs.
I'm actually happy with the 10x Lyft, and it easily pays for the $100 increase in my case :)
Pathing is usually:
1) secured/student for 1 year
2) Freedom/CFU (starter Chase card) for 1-3 months
3) CSP/CSR
There are exceptions obviously but that's the risk-adverse / maximize approval odds, pathing.
Your new intro is not as good as the older one.

Seems very rationale. If you're bonus hunting, BofA Alaska cards have been offering me outsized value as well.
The Beeeee
Is getting the intro bonus for the Ink preferred counts towards once every 4 years or only the CSR & CSP?
Each Ink card is once every 2 years. 4 years is only for Sapphire cards.
Ayman Ibrahim wanna play a game?
I was an authorized user for 1 AmEx card does that rule me out for the 100k platinum offer?
Probably not because it's not your account and technically you didn't open it so you aren't bound by those rules. But it would be safe to ask AMEX directly.
Generally, no. This can obviously change though (Amex is a fickle beast).
Switched to Green after doing the math. Downgrading the CSR before next annual fee is due.
No love for the City National Crystal Visa?
Nope, they essentially killed the card with the new changes.

Well i have your top two. I woud go with US Bank Altitude Reserve, Wells Fargo Propel, and Citi Prestige, not in that order.
Marriott bonvoy >>
I live in the suburbs so I drive to most places. I do use Lyft on occasion when I head into SF but not often enough for my calculations.
First! What do I win?
If you're willing to disclose, I'm interested in what your credit score looks like churning through all these credit cards all the time. I can't imagine it's over 800 doing this constant chasing of welcome bonuses. But I could be wrong.
It floats in the 750 to 775 range. Once you have a base of cards (average age of accounts) it becomes less of an issue.
Inquiries have had little impact. I probably would be in the 800 range but I value trips (for paying my rent).
I was honestly hoping that you would post a video like this!
yessss you need to bring that intro back.
