The Platinum is not however good for me since i don't fly enough. Finally, I have my sights on the AMEX Hilton Aspire card 1st for the Diamond status and 2nd for that intro bonus! I plan on banking on that status for my RTW trip in a few years. Will stay at Hilton's and Hyatt's. Plus Staying at Hilton's for tropical vacations with the wife should be worth it!! Thanks, Sebby!
I would argue the Southwest Priority, Altitude Reserve, and Ritz (still) are additional S level cards. Priority because you come out ahead with credits plus four upgrades which allows you to get to the exit row seats first AND because it sets you well on your way to companion pass-arguably the greatest outsize value in the whole game. USB AR because of unique instant mobile rewards that enable deal stacking (e.g. sw companion pass), WiFi credits that are actually useful, and it’s arguably only complete alternative to the CSR in terms of travel protections, enabling us to dump the CSR in peace. I would also argue that club upgrades + $100 property credit still puts the ritz card in S territory for specific outsize value uses, like Hong Kong. Love your content Sebby!!!
I can see the argument for the SW Priority and the Chase Ritz (but for a different reason). USB AR seems like a "spend to get" and it lacks transfer partners so hard to justify in my book.
You should make a video on how to efficiently utilize and maximize your points with the common cards like the Chase Ultimate Rewards & AMEX Membership Rewards
Do you cash out to Hyatt with some variation of that setup (e.g. redeem MR points for 1 cpp for Hyatt gift cards)? I mostly use Chase for generating Hyatt points; haven't tried with Amex.
I am currently in mid-stage and don't have any Amex. Although I fly mostly AA out of south Florida, I am not flying enough to take advantage of these S-Tier level cards. Racking those points until I decide to do that aspirational trip.
I feel like Ritz-Carlton card is still tier S for me. $300 easy-to use airline credit, unlimited authorized user (aka unlimited free priority pass and Global entry/TSA Pre for family) and the free night itself is worth more than $300.
Huge fan of my Ritz-Carlton card as it's my go-to. I generate about 15,000 points per month, use the $300 airline incidental credit for Southwest Airline gift cards, and relish the 50k FNA.
Depends on your firm and their policies. MBB (McK, Bain, BCG) generally are fine with you using personal card AFAIK. Most recent source I could find: www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/best-credit-cards-to-travel-as-a-consultant-updated-for-2019
I do think the Platinum is S-tier, but the benefits require S-tier amount of work to take advantage of. For example, everyone knows about the airport lounges, but less know about popup lounges and even less know about ACCESS lounges. Additionally, while Hilton and Marriott Gold doesn't get you much, you can use them to status match to other properties. Same with car rental status.
I definitely disagree with the American Express Platinum card mainly because I travel 99% of the time in the US. Doesn’t the Chase Sapphire Reserve offer concierge service as well? Anyways, due to the difficulty of using the Amex Platinum credits, I even believe the Chase Sapphire Reserve is a better card. In fact I believe the Amex Gold card is better that the Platinum card for the vast majority of people due to the vastness of its multipliers. Everything is is awesome. Great vid.
I'd wholly disagree with your analysis of the two. Why prepay your travel credit and count it as a benefit? I understand it's money that will be spent regardless, but I don't see it as a huge benefit by allowing chase to hold on to my money only to give it back like it was a favor... 🤑
I use my Platinum card for business related travel expenses (hotels, airfare on Southwest, etc) for which I am reimbursed, then I transfer points 1:1 to my linked Delta Skymiles. 5X points on airline purchases adds up. The great benefit is the lounge access. With the Platinum, no matter what I’m flying, I have lounge access in about 90% of the airports I travel to/from.
I guess we prepay all travel credits. This is akin to getting a tax refund. And I see that a great benefit is the lounge access. If available to me, that would be a benefit that I certainly would enjoy. Except where I travel, the lounge access is lacking. I get reimbursed for most of my travel as well. But as a college coach, I get a lot of bang with the Gold Card restaurant multiplier because of team travel (kids eat a lot). Different cards are valued differently by each individual. People’s uses are different. Thank God for the differences. More people are served different ways.
I'm reimbursed for my travel credit on the CSR within a few weeks of it reactivating. Compare that to Amex products, where it is not only an absolute PITA to execute qualifying for the credit, but I possibly buy things that I wouldn't have otherwise. And then often have to follow up with Amex to even get the credit applied! The effective AF becomes significantly higher after appropriate discounts are applied.
So how does the weekend certificate on the Hilton aspire work exactly? Are you saying I can potentially use the certificate to book the Maldives Hilton for Friday Saturday and Sunday for free?
I finally have a job that offers vacation time. So I need some sort of travel card or hotel card..I’m still building credit tho. Only cards I have right now are the discover it and Apple Card.
I don't have any Hilton card, and I am planning for ( Maldives/Bora Bora) later this year. At this rate, it looks like applying for the Aspire card directly is my only option? Since I can't apply for both Surpass and Aspire at the same time (too much minimum spend). I wish I applied for regular Hilton last year :(
I have a general question: If i am i authorized user for the chase preferred, can i apply for the chase reserve or do i have to close it and then apply
Chase will "upgrade" your preferred to reserve. You have to call them though and it is usually an easy switch. Chase has a policy that you cannot keep both at the same time.
I miss the Visa travel discount, but I'm not certain that the Ritz is not still an S. The travel benefits (trip delay, priority pass, extra cards, primary insurance, as well as minimum points on spend convince me to currently hold on to it. Martiott gold statu, the anniversary night and travel credit prevent me from downgrading. A few tweaks and it would be PERFECT.
Citi Prestige was my all time fav card as I used to book so many fourth night free stays at various hotels including Aman resorts. Sadly now you have to book 4th night free through their crappy website and they only allow you to book the cheapest room category and Aman resorts is no longer accessible through Citi. This took out all the fun and thousands of dollars of savings I had for the past few years. I guess all good things must come to an end. Now I just use it to collect 5x points to transfer to airlines.
If I get added as an authorized user on someone elses account will that effect Chase 5/24? I'm at 4/24 and don't want to fill the last spot with an authorized user card...
Yes, you will be 5/24. But, there have been data points about calling Chase Recon line and having it removed from your status. As always, YMMV and good luck!
Hey Sebby that was a good video, as always. I have a quick question for you. My credit history is 9 months old which started at 570 now it’s 700 with 3 credit cards 1.) My credit union card $2,000 limit 2.) My discover secured card $400 limit and 3.) Amex blue cash card $2,000 limit. My question is what would you do in my position? Go for 1 more card or stay on these cards and try to climb their credit card ladders? Thank you!
Yeah, I am debating whether to downgrade my citi prestige card... I have a number of hotel credit cards so I am not sure if I will be able to use the 4th night free benefit, I have other cards for priority pass lounge access, and now that there are no longer any travel protections I do not plan to use the card for flights... Its hard to justify keeping the card given that I also have the Amex gold card for dining, as well as the BofA cash rewards card earning 5.25% cash back on dining if they dont take amex... The last useful benefit remaining would be $1000 per claim cell phone protection... But that seems like a stretch given the $249 net annual fee... I also have the CNB crystal card, that one I will keep this year given that its still only $50 net annual fee and it has a priority pass good for the priority pass restaurants, primary car rental insurance, and 12 gogo inflight wifi passes.
Hey, Sebby - long-time watcher! Great video. Slightly off-topic question about cancelling cards I haven't seen answers to anywhere (including your videos). I have a CSR and I'm eligible for the Sapphire welcome bonus after 48 months. I want the Preferred sign-up bonus - but I've never actually cancelled a card before. Have downgraded plenty (I have the Flex, Freedom, and Freedom Unlimited) so no options for downgrading here. But I'm worried about being iced out or losing points if I cancel then immediately reapply. For someone who is socially awkward, any thoughts on the diplomacy of cancelling cards or even just experiences to share about what it's like? Everyone says you can cancel and take advantage in this way, but no one has ever described what it looks like or if there are risks.
Very specific case, maybe not S tier but still overpowered for many, Chase IHG $89 AF null by reward night Great multipliers staying at IHG Something sebby has touched on, the status merry go round IHG PE > Wyndham Diamond > Caesars Diamond If you stay at Caesars properties often, that diamond status saving resort fees is limitless. If you are getting comp nights at their properties you can stay completely free. 2 trips 4 nights each, $45x8 = $360 Dont forget comp drinks at the bars! Edit: How did I forget about that signup bonus 140k points currently
Hilton diamond can match to wyndham then caesar diamond as well. IHG free night redemption has too many limitations, I stayed at intercontinental bangkok with my certificate and that was just about $200 value with happy hour/breakfast included. Good card but not S tier
Everyone is crazy about the Hilton Aspire card, I made them my hotel of choice this year (I was IHG last year) - looking forward to checking out all the different Hilton properties both domestically and internationally. I hope they don't neuter the card!
Love the video! It seems like a 'bait and switch' where they get you with the benefits and then they switch to a lesser card. The only problem, is if you have lots of debts on that card now you're married to it! Maybe that's the idea all along....
Nice vid Sebby! QQ, I currently have the lowest tier of the Hilton card (Honor I believe), should I ride it out by upgrading it to Ascend, then one year later to Aspire, to max the upgrade bonus, or should I go straight up to the Aspire??
Great video Sebby! Personally, I don't think much of Hilton but my experience is within the US. Marriott is usually my preference, but you did some great videos with Best Western on your international trips as well. Just something for me to consider.
I don’t see anywhere on your site where you preview the highly niche and exclusive cards like Centurion, JPM reserve (often misunderstood), Citi Chairman, Stratus, Coutts, Dubai First Royal
I have the AMEX Platinum and Aspire. The platinum $550 comes to $25 out of pocket not even factoring in lounge access. The Aspire has given me a positive return in year 1. Between the airline credit, $250 resort credit, weekend certificate and 150k SUB, my family will enjoy a 4K trip for 1k. What I got out of your video is getting an Aspire card for my wife. I could double stack the weekend certificates and airline credits. Will have to think this one out. Of all the credit cards in my portfolio, the Aspire gives me to highest positive return. The platinum comes in second and the CSR was number 2 but the added $100 AF, falls to the number 3 spot. The primary reasons I’m keeping: I travel through a Southwest and United hub, plus the PP is still accepted at certain airport restaurants. My out of pocket for the CSR is now $165 a year.
Paul Charles this is helpful. I’m planning to downgrade my CSR due to increased AF so looking at other options. Seems like Aspire or maybe Amex platinum is where I should look next
The Amex Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card is Awesome!! I will be Upgrading from The Amex Hilton Honors Surpass Credit Card! I wonder if Amex will give Me another 150I in MR Points???
re Aspire: I'd rather work towards hitting Plat at Marriott every year by doing a measly 20 nights. After one has Marriott Plat, pretty much no reason to stay at a Hilton even with DIamond status, especially given Marriott's footprint. With Mariott Plat, you're ENTITLED to a base suite if one is available. With Diamond, you're entitled to the base room that you paid for. It might be worth it if you travel enough that you're sure you will be in a situation EVERY YEAR when there's a Hilton property in a location that doesn't have a Marriott property nearby. The weekend free night is only selling point really, and that's only if you have multiple Aspire cards. In SE Asia, I found service was way better at Marriott properties than Hilton at the top end. If you "earned" Diamond status through body in bed nights, shoot yourself.
I generally agree, especially for road warriors. I think the Aspire isn't bad if you mix in some resorts / unique locations though. For example, Mandy and I generally don't like IHG but we LOVED the Intercontinental Danang due to the design / architecture. I was initially skeptical but liked it enough that we stalked the architect: www.bensley.com/ IHG status doesn't really do much in terms of upgrades but got us late checkout, etc.

You can definitely downgrade into a second Flex.
Hey Sebby...speaking of honeymoons...? Hmmm? 😉
Great video Sebby
Can you use those 4th night free cards to live in a hotel? 🤔
Very specific case, maybe not S tier but still overpowered for many, Chase IHG
$89 AF null by reward night
Great multipliers staying at IHG
Something sebby has touched on, the status merry go round
IHG PE > Wyndham Diamond > Caesars Diamond
If you stay at Caesars properties often, that diamond status saving resort fees is limitless. If you are getting comp nights at their properties you can stay completely free. 2 trips 4 nights each, $45x8 = $360
Dont forget comp drinks at the bars!
I hit the like button as soon as you said Super Saiyan.
Love the video! It seems like a 'bait and switch' where they get you with the benefits and then they switch to a lesser card. The only problem, is if you have lots of debts on that card now you're married to it! Maybe that's the idea all along....
Centurion should be on list and chase reserve
How about cards for ppl who don't travel enough to justify these cards?

Can you do a which cards you would get if u had SCRA, essentially all fees waived video thanks

is it me or does Sebby needlessly pluralize his words with "s"s at the end of them?
Nice vid Sebby! QQ, I currently have the lowest tier of the Hilton card (Honor I believe), should I ride it out by upgrading it to Ascend, then one year later to Aspire, to max the upgrade bonus, or should I go straight up to the Aspire??

Top 20 yay!!!😎
I am learning so much! Thanks for posting.
Great video Sebby! Personally, I don't think much of Hilton but my experience is within the US. Marriott is usually my preference, but you did some great videos with Best Western on your international trips as well. Just something for me to consider.
I have a hard time recommending Hilton for the US, unless it's an interesting property (maybe Hawaii?).
Time to become a consultant.
Great content, thank you
I don’t see anywhere on your site where you preview the highly niche and exclusive cards like Centurion, JPM reserve (often misunderstood), Citi Chairman, Stratus, Coutts, Dubai First Royal
Has the AF on the JPM Reserve increased like the CSR?
Too 10 cards under $400 AF
Far too many to consider in that space and too many market focuses...
"ESSU RANKU!"
Haha that outro was great, S Tier!
make a full tier list‼️
With the tiermaker program!
Nice haircut 👌

Love your content. Thank you for keeping people lie me informed 🙏🏼
Omg supersayin
re Aspire: I'd rather work towards hitting Plat at Marriott every year by doing a measly 20 nights.
I was initially skeptical but liked it enough that we stalked the architect: www.bensley.com/
IHG status doesn't really do much in terms of upgrades but got us late checkout, etc.
@@AskSebby whoa I'm putting that one on my shortlist. thanks. interior vibes are similar to The Siam. Huge fan of Vietnam. This SITUATION though...ugh
