being someone of a musician myself on the clarinet/Bass clarinet, I can literally see the music rolling inside your head while your hands are doing different parts Kristen! I LOVE IT!!
I am literally obsessed with your videos. You deserve a million subscribers and you are super inspiring.
+Abby Rodriguez Aww thank you! You're so sweet! ☺️
no real questions, just a new fan. You have a huge talent and are a joy to listen to. Thank you for bringing back this style of music!
I started playing ragtime when I was 16 and was obsessed with Max Morath. I never ever played as well as you. You have a gift. I haven’t played in years and you are such an inspiration I think I might just start ragtime again. Thank you.
You're so awesome!
You, young lady, bring back the fun in piano playing. Ragtime music is timeless, and you're one of the few keeping it alive! Keep going and don't stop!
You were 27 when you posted this??? You look so much younger!
Anyway, I'm a big fan after hearing you recently. Your playing is amazing, especially the more popular stuff that wasn't written in ragtime. Your Silent Night is definitely my favorite Christmas song this year. I hope you're able to keep praying and posting for a long time.
You never know what you will stumble about on you tube. Love ragtime and country blues guitar and I guess I worked my way from a video of maple leaf rag on guitar to your channel. Love your playing! There really is not much as cool as ragtime piano. There is something about the syncopation that is just mesmerizing. Glad I found your music. Put a smile on my face!
I love watching your videos! Thank you for putting them out there...it motivates me to go home and practice more. Thanks again!
Its going to be a tuff day for me today. Fact is the days are getting a bit tuffer every day and my only choice is to work them through, remain at the wheel, try another solution. And as I get worn down and crampy, I go hopping over to find you and there's my solution. You are an extremely talented young lady and have the guts to use it and move on for more. Your music is light and joyful, a tune I can sing or shout out, and the world backs off and gives me a chance to get back in the race. And for a man my ages (93) that's a trumpet blaring victory. Thank you for all the effort yo put into your music, and thank you for being you.
My simple comment: please play more when you can, you are an amazing artist!
You're great! I love ragtime. I played piano in another life before I decided to concentrate on the guitar. I was able to play Joplin's Solace and The Entertainer. A friend and I got into Joplin for some reason for a time. I had a plastic bust of him on my piano when I was in my 20's and early 30's. I'm 65 now and quit piano in my late 30's to lend my time to one instrument, the guitar because of time constraints. I really enjoy the sound of ragtime played well, like you do. Thanks for being out there. Ragtime is important music. I'm glad there are people like you to carry on it's legacy. Cheers and best wishes! You're the coolest of all time. :)
I think what you do, and the style in which you play is much more than being about perfection... You convey such a spirit of light-heartedness, and just plain fun. It is really just a pleasure to watch you perform, I really enjoy it. And gee, who would have guessed you loved Disneyland? LOL
I would really like to hear you playing some old time jazz. As one of the music styles that came after rag time I think you could really nail it. You are a really talented young lady, awesome arrangements and renditions.
Love your cute little dog! From watching this I think you have a great personality!
I got my love of ragtime (guitar) from going to Disney World every year as a kid, and from Steve Howe, the guitarist in the band Yes. If you love Disneyland, you should try to make it to Disney World. All of Disneyland would fit in the Magic Kingdom parking lot and you would still have room to park about 500 cars. The place is amazing. My favorite place on the planet.
I love your arrangements, I wanted to play one but it was a bit hard and I was just looking at the previews, so now I am waiting for the day when I will be able to play one of your arrangements.
Cool video, Kristen. Good to see you're still making vids. :)
Yea I started loving ragtime recently, I can play piano but as well as you can. I can play ragtime at an advanced intermediate level.
What Joplin rag was the most difficult for you to learn?
Love your stuff! I suggest you play the entertainer, it's one of the more harder rag pieces out there. Just an option. Keep up the good work!
I use to play rag time on mallet percussion is college I'm a 57 year old rock drummer it took me two weeks to learn maple leaf on the piano" I'd like to become a ragtime pianist before I die lol I think your awesome I know it will take allot of work to get to your level, meanwhile you keep me inspired thanks for sharing you talent on utube u r awesome! !!!!!
Thank you for bringing hours of music pleasure to our home.
Lol great answers. Nicely done 👍
i too love ragtime
This is me commenting on your comments of our comments ;) lol I was mindblown when you said that you write and arrange your own music, that's incredible and props to you for learning songs in a week and a half XD I take forever with mine
Haha ! I loved this video and your answers (and sarcasm sometimes). Cheers from Poland.
hopefully all the creeps will stop commenting on your looks and start commenting how outstanding you are and gifted you are at playing the piano - keep up the great work
Oh boo hoo it’s so hard being an attractive female 😒
Mucha felicidades por ser una pianista estupenda...tocas muy bien el Ragtime..
Do you play professionally or is it just for fun? You're great, you vids are very entertaining!
Very nice sence of humor.
I can't believe how incredibly you play. You are so very talented. I've always wanted to learn to play piano. You are a beautiful talented young lady, truly gifted. My name is Lonny Cowell, most likely cousin of Simon. I however live in Texas, but my family from father is Scottish, and from my mother, Hannah, Irish. So the best of both worlds. And as far as the guys saying inappropriate things to you, just ignore them. I as well as a lot of my talented musical cousins have your back. Keep up the great ragtime beat. Oh and, I also love disney in Cali. It truly is a magical place.
I love your covers ! So when are we going to see Hungarian Rhapsody ? c:
Hi Kristen. Great video. How did you get such great web audio for your piano? (So many times piano on the web isn't good, but yours is high quality!) Is there a microphone inside your piano? It sounds amazing! Your octave work is solid!
I'm a new fan. Thank you for the music AND the commentary. My father, god rest his soul, was a lover of "boogie woogie". One of your videos showed up as "recommended for you" after watching Brendan Kavanagh pounding out some boogie woogie on a public piano (not something you'd do these days without a can of Lysol, hand sanitizer and face masks. Truth is, I just love watching people making music - other RUclips sensations like Foxes and Fossils and my favorite, Leonid and Friends. Please never stop and, again, THANK YOU! P.S. I have subscribed to your channel. :-)
Auios, The combination of notes when Kristen applied her head to the keys are Eb and F#, both of which are actually black, which makes sense: black keys are elevated meaning they're the first thing one's head/object is going to bump onto when dropping on the keybed itself.
Hey do you have a cover of the crave, its a really awesome piece of music rag, I think you will nail it. It's my personal favorite.
I love the people that supply negative comments about someone who performs music. "Tempo was wrong", "You missed some notes", etc. MY answer is simple to these people, "Oh.... I'm sorry. Please sit down and show me my mistakes. Obviously you must be very talented". They usually walk away without another comment.
I'm curious; what does your piano maintenance regimen look like? How often do you have it tuned, regulated and whatnot? Have you ever had the hammers re-shaped?
Nice Q&A ;) Some of those comments were hilarious :P And I love the way you speak, and don't think you're awkward at all :) In fact, without you, I'd never have learned Bare necessities, so thank you for the inspiration :) 18 years is a long time, I've only been playing for 5 years, haha. Maybe I'll be as good as you when I've played that long.
I'm so glad I could inspire you! You sound GREAT! Keep it up! :)
+Kristen Mosca Aww, thank you very much!
what 27? she looks so much younger!
Agreed
Which disney rags was the easiest and the hardest for you to arrange? Love you
Re learning a new piece (talking about RAGS) and how long does it take? ....................how about it depends on the degree of difficulty? !!! Some are so easy (like the Peacherine) you can learn it in a few days. Others (like Elite Snycopations) can take months because of difficulty with proper fingering (scantly supplied on the sheet music) , and the disjointed octaves and chords required in the last section. Unless, of course, you're more than just a mostly self-taught pianist like me. If you're conservatory trained, ALL the Joplin rags are a snap and can be sight read at nearly full tempo on the first reading.
Kristen! You're from Vegas?!?! I am too!! I study music at UNR. That's crazy!! :D
Do you have any advice or any practices which help control your left hand? I struggle with my left hand and have never had a piano lesson 😂
I would love to hear you take Queen's song 'Bring back Leroy Brown' and play that one to rag. It basically already is a Rock/Rag song and I'm sure you'd love it and playing it. also playing Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody 2 (from the cadenza on) as a rag, which it practically is.
Have you ever played with a tenor or plectrum banjoist
That instrument and ragtime piano are just meant to play together.
They can occupy an entire line-up's worth of musical space if they play their cards right, it's incredible.
PS: I'm learning the tenor banjo as we speak.
I enjoy your ragtime piano playing and I would encourage you to continue playing ragtime (said the man who has been playing ragtime for approximately forty years).
I love the pace that you play the Peacherine Rag. Very brisk. Also, would you ever be interested in learning how to play The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin? And btw next when some crazy nutzoid asks you to marry them, you should tell them off! And that guy who said you interpreted a song like an Asian 3 year old, their really ignorant! I love your rags and you play very whimsically!
Hi Kristen, I just found this channel recently but I really dig your ragtime and also your Disney renditions! I used your "Friend Like Me" cover as a backing track and sang the vocals, and it sounded great! (this occurred in the privacy of my own home and no profit was made, please don't sue.) :) I used to play piano until about 10 years ago when I moved and sold it. I haven't really played since except sporadically, when I could find a piano somewhere. I can still remember some pieces like The Entertainer, but it's all muscle memory. If I try to think about what I'm playing nothing comes out - but one time (when I was slightly drunk) I sat down at a piano and just let my hands move by themselves and it came out perfectly. I should really buy a piano again, and some wine. Love your channel!
+Slashco You definitely should! I wouldn't survive without a piano haha. Thank you so much for your support! 😁
I just discovered and subscribed your channel. You are an amazing ragtime player. You can try out other classical musicians too.Maybe chopin liszt beethoven
HI Kristen my name is Mallory and i am a big fan of your videos! they are amazing and i was wondering if you have any advice for me. I am trying to compose a medley and I was wondering if you had any tips on how you compose the songs that you write? Thank you so much you are the reason i became obsessed with ragtime love ya!
What would be the best advice you could give to a complete beginner for playing ragtime?
Also, how the hell do I figure out the fingering, I'm stuck with magnetic rag and can't find the fingering information anywhere..
+PeopleCanFly23 Let me think on the advice part. What part is giving you trouble in Magnetic Rag? I can take a look and see if I can help!
That's great!! Keep it up! I'd love to hear you play. That part in Magnetic is actually the same part I'm also working on. If I think of any tips or tricks while I'm working on it, I'll let you know!
***** Thank you so much :) I'm thinking of recording myself, but I still play this piece with a lot of mistakes and pedaling is sometimes where it shouldn't be.
Have you ever streamed a Disney+ channel. It’s mostly on a ROKU TV if you have one. If not there’s an app for Disney+!
Your version of Maple Leaf Rag is one of the best I have heard. Do you ever play classical music or are you primarily interested in Disney and Rags?
Thank you so much!! I used to play a lot of classical but haven't much lately. It's definitely something I want to revisit!
I have a Yamaha upright that I've had since I was 5 but it doesn't make the same sounds yours does.
Playing like a 3-year-old Asian kid isn't bad. I wish I could. :)
Seriously, though ... your music is cool. Inspiring. I gotta play more again.
Zora!? That's what my dog's name was!! She was the best dog I ever had and lived a happy 15 years. Miss that stinker. Great name for a dog.
I have to say you are a woman after my own heart as I love ragtime piano as well.
Do you like stride piano music? Stuff like "Dizzy Fingers" by Zez Confrey or "Handful of Keys" by Fats Waller?
wow you look like really young, and you are really awesome.
I like them songs you played they are really beautiful
looks like she is having a wonderful time on the piano playing Disney songs
u are very pretty
Hey! A fellow piano youtuber! I'm almost the same age as you, and I related to so mmuch of what you said in this video.
You are lucky for having the opportunity to learn piano early. My parents faked not realizing that playing piano was making me happier than anything else. I was 3 years-old and everytime we were at my grandma's house, I was spending most of the time on her organ. When I was 10, I told my parents that I wanted to learn piano. They said they did not have money for that. But they spent even more on activities that were not interesting to me. And when I was 12, they bought me a toy piano, 2 octaves, could play only one note at a time and the keys were not standard sized. Nobody could learn to play with such a crap. There was a piano teacher living 3 houses from our house. Today I am too busy to practise and barely have time to do so. My potential talent has been spoiled. My story has similar examples among many people. You were very lucky to have parents who did want you to learn piano and do things that THEY wanted for you.
OH MY GOD LOL!
Also my name is pronounced "Awh - ee - ohs" xD
Are you Greek?
Vince Guaraldi wrote Linus and Lucy. David Benoit plays it to perfection. I think you could, too. Would you be willing to learn it?
I enjoy your ragtime and your q&a video. Thanks!
Awkward personalities make the best friendships.
Omg that's my question 😱😱😍
Hey, Kristen - this video is awesome and you are too funny! :)
I've got a question myself actually: I am merely curious as to how long it took you to feel comfortable with playing ragtime? I am attempting to master this advanced playing style myself, and with all of the octave playing and other tricky techniques... :/ Just wondering about how long it took you to feel comfortable, confident and fully able to play this advanced style... even just an approximation would be much appreciated. :)
Your playing is outstanding, by the way! Keep up the good work - I love all of your covers!
A LONG TIME!! Ragtime isn't easy. It's still a challenge to learn new pieces.. but it gets a little easier the more pieces I learn. I would say it took at least a few years to feel comfortable enough to play it for others. My biggest challenge is still all the jumps in the left hand.
Wow - thanks so much for the reply! Very informative and helpful.
You definitely have excellent playing techniques. Keep up the stupendous work, my friend. :)
I like you !!
Talent nice to meet you
it looks like your piano is the mid 1800's or older it sounds very nice rich tones coming from it
youre my favourite :P
Could you do a ragtime cover of "Time of Your Life" from a Bug's Life? I think that song would sound awesome as a ragtime song!
Do you do much improv playing or do you prefer to learn songs? Just curious, because I'm fairly new to piano and havnt learnt much on the way of technique so I tend to find improv alot easier
+eames02 I'm completely the opposite. Improv is so hard for me! I love arranging songs but I always have to write it down immediately so I don't forget it. To improv on the spot is impossible for me!
are you the best piano player?? im not realy sure cause have you seen Liberache!!!???
put in q&a #2.
I love listening to Maple Leaf that you played in Disney. Actually that was the first video I seen of you. I wish you would post a new video of that from your home so the sound quality is better.
You are my daughters age and very pretty so of course guys are going to be rude. You handle it well.
When boys say "will you marry me?" to cute girls on the net or anywhere else, they don't mean it literally (usually!). It's just a way of flirting, of saying that they really like the girl. It's harmless and just normal boy/girl fun.
Plus, telling a cute girl that she's cute is a good and right thing to do. Paying genuine compliments to other people is good for our world! :-)
''Will you marry me?'' one of Kristen's subscribers said in jest.
You look more beautiful with bangs
Do you teach piano for your profession?
I'm curious, Have you ever heard of Kyle Landry?
He doesn't really do a lot of Ragtime pieces but if you haven't heard of him, he's really cool too. I really like your videos, and have been going through a bunch of them. you play well! Added to my list of people I aspire to be as good as one day!
Woah !!! beautiful and charming ;)
are you gonna work at disneyland as the piano player??
It looks to me like your piano model is a Yamaha M402!
Do,you,have the Quarantine Rag transcribed?
Consider another outdoor video ... random pianos are everywhere (if your looking) Hotels, Malls, Airports and train stations. Love your style, but wish sometimes you would put a little more dynamics into your playing. This would give the listener a little more insight into your feeling of the song not just how well you have it memorized.
Beautiful music. beautiful dog. Beautiful woman. I love all three.
Cheers from Serbia :)
Shoot. I thought I could adapt such playing skills in two years until you said you've been playing for my entire life time plus five years.
"I heard this fun sounding kind of music when I was on my first period. Ragtime made sense for me."
Wait...do you do metal rag?
oHH mY... WHY SO CUTE??? its illegal
Nice response to the Asian kid comment XD
SeeFreeTV I thought exactly what she said, before she said it. Hahaha. The first memory that came to me was an Asian kid assembling a Rubik's Cube faster than I do, and my record is 40 seconds (which is pretty much nothing by competitions' standards 😁). So when I saw the comment in the video, I thought, "hey, that's actually a compliment..." haha
You shouldn't let negative comments like that get to you.
You are the best for your age ragtime player ❤❤❤❤
The MOST common question should be WHEN will you strike out and play on a travelling basis sharing your marvelous talents with the public?
FOUR... 😂
cute doggie
What is your favorite rag to play and/or listen to ? Cheers
+SoaDark00 Honestly, Maple Leaf is still my all time favorite! I learned it so many years ago and I still play it every day. It gets me in a ragtime mood! It's also showier than a lot of other rags so that makes it more fun to play. I'm always changing up how I play it so it never gets old. ☺️
Nice :) Maple Leaf is what got me into ragtime in the first place. As you said, never gets old !
Disneyland or Disney World?
