Kristen, I am motivated by your videos. I studied piano as a kid, taking lessons for some 8 years or so. I was never a fan of contemporary music on the piano and pretty much stayed with classical, ragtime and a little blues. My favorites were Maple Leaf Rag and Peacherine Rag. Then life hit. I was broke and had to sell my little piano. Here I am, 40 years later and I just got myself an old 1950's vintage Estey spinet piano and am thrilled by tickling the keys again. It is amazing how 40 years can pass and muscle memory still peeks through a little. I found some sheet music and tuned my piano myself. (Your video of tuning one yourself hit home on that one!) I have not mastered anything yet, but Maple Leaf Rag, the Moonlight Sonata, and St. Louis Blues are on the top of my playlist to be for the moment. Thanks again for your content. I look forward to much more.
Hi! Greetings from Germany and Thanks a lot for your music! Your music took me back to the days when I was a child. How ? I jumped into your channel just by happenstance. And what I heard just took me back to the days when I was a child. My father played the piano this kind of music when he came home from work. But when I grew older he stopped playing the piano - don't know why. Now I'm 68 and daddy died long time ago. During all the years I didn't hear this type of music again. But now I know - it's ragtime. So you made my day and brought me back the sounds of my childhood. Listening to you ... you play the piano in the same way daddy did... .. and in my mind all the stories coming back daddy told us when he was a prisoner-of-war in the US in the 1940s and playing the piano in the clubs around the camp... What else to say... goon doing so and bringing happyness to your listeners! You are awesome! Werner
I wanted to say that as a musician myself on instruments other than piano (I'm considering lessons), I can tell you put in a lot of hard work to get where you are and the beautiful sound tells that story. Thank you for blessing our ears with your amazing talent and I hope you continue. The only request I have is after hearing you trying to teach your brother 12 street rag, you have a couple spurts of speeding up the tempo. I think you can really bring that rag to life if you do another video of you playing it yourself. Looking forward to future videos. PS, not everyone on the internet is creepy.
only recently subscribed and loving the video,as for the comments it seems ragtime is a live and well with the younger generation and you being a good ambassador, your Disney covers a real joy of happiness, looking forward to the next video,Andy D
Horatio Nelson The Entertainer can never be overdone. It's the single piece I can play from start to end, it has never bored me in the 30 years that I play piano.
You inspired me to learn rags, even though it's not really my cup of tea. Watching you play them was mesmerizing. I hope your hand heals up so we can hear some more. Puts some DMSO on it to reduce inflammation.
Just a small suggestion, you can record your playing into midi form on your computer and it'll generate the sheet for ya. You can touch it up afterwards too.
Really nice to see you back again. Sorry to see your hand like that. Definitely get to a Dr with that if you haven't already. If you've knocked it at all then probably nothing too bad but if you haven't knocked it then might be something like a Ganglion Cyst so best to get it checked out. Anyway looking forward to your next piece.
What do you use to notate your music. Musescore, Sibelius? Or do you have some fancy software that you can put MIDI files into and it pumps you out a reasonable score which you only have to fix up? If the earlier two, why do you even try notation? When it takes you hours on a good day to get even a quarter of a rag perfectly notated?
I'm 16 and I've been playing piano now for 8 years now. In that time I've been able to learn many pieces from many genres. However, ragtime has proven elusive for me. I've only been able to learn the maple leaf rag 2 years ago, despite trying others such as the Pine Apple Rag. What suggestions do you have for learning other ragtime pieces?
I love that you say you are left handed. I am also left handed. I guess we have that in common. That must be why you are so amazing. Awesome playing love listening.
Kristen. You have what's called a Ganglion Cyst. Common and they normally go by themselves after a few months to a couple of years. If it gets painful, see a doc. I recently have one myself. I thought it was due to fretting the guitar but nope! Nice playing.
Hi Kristen, i'm from Mexico, i also dislike the Entertainer, i learnt it as a teenager and i played it is so much until i dislike, i only used to play the three first parts and then, when i grew up, about a year ago i liked the last part. Actually i play, Maple rag, Swipesy, Sun Flower, Peacherine, Entertainer, Easy Winners and Alabama (which is the less i like) and when i listened to you playing Pineapple Rag, i liked it so much, so i decided to put this piece as well. I don't like much the rest of Joplin's sheets, so i think i only would play these eight songs of ragtime. This channel is for my school and studies, but maybe i will sing up for a new channel when i could record that music, thank u for your Q&A video
You are extremely talented, and I am in awe. Stride piano scares me to death (and I've played lots of genres). Would you consider playing the entertain-ING (gotcha!) Fats Waller song, "Handful of Keys"? (even playing a simplified version arranged for SATB chorus scared me to death, so I would be incredibly impressed)
Kristen - I left this on FB, but I was wondering if you have ever met or played with Tom Brier, Frank LiVolsi, or Adam Swanson. You all seem to be kindred spirits, and I could just imagine the fun you could have playing together, I'd love to hear you all in the same room collaborating, or trying some four-handed piano!
I won’t ask you to marry me, because I asked the love of my life nearly 50 years ago. But I would be pleased beyond measure to be your honorary grandfather.
hey there from France ! its weird cause you learned the same pieces of piano than me (maple leaf rag, then peacherine, pineapple etc...) and i did myself a ragtime version of aladdin, jungle book, Pocahontas, beauty and the beast as well, and they are very very similar ! XD i even played for Disney in paris once too So : are you my soul twin or that kind of stuff ???
Hi Kristen , I am a big fan . I have a question for you . I have watched your video where you played Swipesy Cake Walk at Disneyland . I love that song . Would it be possible to make another video playing that song on your piano ? Thanks .
I played a lot of ragtime back in the 1980s and I share your negative opinion about The Entertainer. I can play it but I am hardly a big fan of it. You look like you are having fun while playing, always important. You ever watch Chico Marx play the piano in those old Marx Brothers movies? My style of play was more like Joshua Rifkin, a somewhat slower pace. But it is always tempting to play the rags more quickly. I hope you can try out Gladiolus Rag, my favorite. Part of it, along with parts of others, were played in The Sting, my introduction and inspiration to Ragtime back in 1973.
Just subscribed today and am captivated by your playing. That painful bump on your wrist is most likely a ganglion cyst. In addition to being painful it may eventually restrict movement. Sometimes they subside on their own (within 3 years) and if not, then surgery.
I had that same bump on both hands as a teenager and it hurt, eventually they disappeared as I got into my twenties and luckily I had no pain from then on.
Nice. Can you play The New Russian Rag by George L Cobb, 1923 (Prelude by Rachmaninoff) or Russian Rag by George L. Cobb (1918, Ragtime piano) Please :-)
Ha! I enjoyed the video in fact I decided to what Q&A1 before this one.....just because....it seemed like the right thing to do. Anyway, while I did enjoy everything you said I thought it was funny that you kept on throwing something over your shoulder! :) It took me until I saw your dog "play" the piano before I figured out what you were doing. At first it just seemed like some random item(s) that you just randomly threw.... :)
Have you tried to get yourself "gigs" or playdates, even just locally. You are a marvelous player and very entertaining and would be a delight to see in person.
Good job ! looking forward to 10,000 video. try out a harpsichord its fun also. like E. powers Biggs. He was an organist as well. Keyboard is the real instrument With your training you have many avenues of musical expression and enjoyment ahead. We your fans will be Delighted by your artistic efforts. All the Best to a wonderful young Artist harpsi8, LA Calif.
The bump on your wrist is probably a Ganglion Cyst, they're bothersome, but nothing to worry about. There are a few ways to get rid of them, but it may go away on its own (I had small one, also on my wrist, and it went away on its own after a few years). I found that most of the pain came from it getting irritated and swollen, taking something for the swelling made it almost unnoticeable. orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00006
Hate the Entertainer? Try playing it in Tom Jones "Kiss" style :) For the hand bump, my wife took Turmeric -Curcuma longa with Piperine pills for 2 weeks and the bump was reduced until vanished. Worst part about playing ragtime is being told to play The Entertainer, second worst is being told that "It sounds like we're in an old saloon!"
Kind of like being a guitar thumb picker and always being asked for Cannonball Rag.
I love how you keep throwing stuff to the back (i assuming for your dog? idk lol) throughout the whole video! LOL it's hilarious! ahaha

this is amazing! thanks for sharing your story.. i’m so happy you get to play again!! thanks for all your support 🥰
i love the flawless ability to multitask ... playing with the dogs while making a video and answering questions...
Kristen, I have really enjoyed watching and listening to you play. You are very talented, thank you for sharing your hard work with all of us.

Seriously?! The Entertainer is actually my favorite piece on the piano lol.
Seriously!
Congratulations to 10'000 subscribers!
I love your piano skills so much! I hope your hand feels better. Don't ever give up on piano.
First off, you are an amazing pianist! :D What are your favorite song to play? As well as favorite song in general?
Love how she’s throwing the dogs toy the whole time lol. I love the entertainer!
YAAAAY!! CONGRATULATIONS ON 9K SUBSCRIBERS!😁👏👏
Thank you! :)
Such a great talent Kristen, please keep the music coming 😊

Woah! Subbed because of your insane maple leaf rag. To be honest, I didn't expect another video to be released. But cheers!
At least she's honest about "The Entertainer." 😅
How could anybody hate "The Entertainer"?! Especially someone who loves ragtime??
Because it’s so overdone. You’ll hate anything if I do it enough in front of you.
Rather like Frank Sinatra famously got sick of constantly being asked to sing My Way...
Horatio Nelson The Entertainer can never be overdone. It's the single piece I can play from start to end, it has never bored me in the 30 years that I play piano.
@@Hero3128 I hate it too :(

Really nice to see you back again. Sorry to see your hand like that. Definitely get to a Dr with that if you haven't already. If you've knocked it at all then probably nothing too bad but if you haven't knocked it then might be something like a Ganglion Cyst so best to get it checked out.
Anyway looking forward to your next piece.
True! It´s Magic

Do you like classical piano?
Which composer is your favorite?
Congrats on getting a new job! It's really tough out there, I am still struggling getting a job :(
I'm glad that your hand is healed and thank you so much for sharing your talent with the world Kristen. You are awesome!! (^.^)
I'm 16 and I've been playing piano now for 8 years now. In that time I've been able to learn many pieces from many genres. However, ragtime has proven elusive for me. Peacherine rag is a real good one in my opinion. Not too hard either. The Entertainer isn't technically that difficult but I don't like playing it
I love that you say you are left handed. I am also left handed. I guess we have that in common. That must be why you are so amazing. Awesome playing love listening.
Great Q&A. 👍 How many songs if any have you written or composed?
I have the same lump that you do from playing the piano it's called a ganglion cyst I love your work
At this point, how often do you practice?
Kristen. You have what's called a Ganglion Cyst. Common and they normally go by themselves after a few months to a couple of years. If it gets painful, see a doc. I recently have one myself. I thought it was due to fretting the guitar but nope! Nice playing.
Great chops (facility), and memorizing it all Chord for chord, wow! Any other favorite types of music? Mine is Broadway, Hollywood 1940's.

Awesome work. Sticking with your Disney themes, would you ever consider doing another Randy Newman tune, the theme from Monster's Inc?
hey! just wanted to let you know you've inspired me to learn maple leaf and I can nearly play it :) Thanks
❤️
can you play other songs from other time periods besides rag, cuz you play rag all the time
When playing ragtime, being left-handed is probably an advantage? The part played by the left hand is often very much more complicated.
You are extremely talented, and I am in awe. Stride piano scares me to death (and I've played lots of genres). Would you consider playing the entertain-ING (gotcha!) You are fabulous. I also play piano a little but you are much better than me. ❤️
How often do you practice daily/weekly?
ofc, she practices 40 hours a day, how else would she be able to play like this
I won’t ask you to marry me, because I asked the love of my life nearly 50 years ago. But I would be pleased beyond measure to be your honorary grandfather.

Hey Kristen, I'd love to see some lessons on just the bare bones of rag. Always wanted to play the sound but never knew where to start. Thx
I honestly think you should go on America's got talent or one of those shows, I could totally imagine the judges being blown away!
I bet you could do a good version of russ conways side saddle
I can't believe how expensive the Disneyland passports are nowadays. You still go to DLand often, and do you have a passport?
What is your new job? And when do think the sheet music will be available? And on what website can we find it?
+Sogo33 Everything regarding the sheets is TBD currently. I'll announce all the details when I learn them!
Kristen Mosca thx
the entertainer please!!!!! jeje
entertainer entertains everyone.....its very good piece actually
Zora!? That was the name of my dog as well! She lived to be 15 and was a terrific dog!

I love ragtime and am learning to play various Joplin songs, but my issue is that my hands are way too small to hit all the octaves! Any advice? :)
:(
Hey Kristen, would you consider playing Super Mario - Athletic Rag? Super fun sounding!
I suppose that The Entertainer is to people who play ragtime as Canon in D is to people who play in orchestras.
What's your new job?
Do you also play stride piano?
Love your green room
😍😂
Nice. Can you play The New Russian Rag by George L Cobb, 1923 (Prelude by Rachmaninoff) or Russian Rag by George L. Cobb (1918, Ragtime piano)
Please :-)
Have you ever thought of Live streaming? Like on twitch TV?
What ragtime players do you admire? What pieces do you aspire to play some day but are currently a challenge?
Yes, magic!
and 52.5 subscribers!
I love how you're playing fetch with Zorra while filming this video... Impressive!
....and I was wondering why she was throwing stuff away over and over again xD
You like ragtime, but you hate "The Entertainer"??? Why do you hate it? What about "Easy Winner"?
Would you please cover "Remembering You" by Roger Kellaway?
Patrick Mannion amazing song

If someone put a brand new rag in front of you that you've never played before, can you sight read it? Or do you learn things by rote?
Have you tried to get yourself "gigs" or playdates, even just locally. You are a marvelous player and very entertaining and would be a delight to see in person.
at first what is she throwing, 2 mins later Ohhhhhhh it's the crazy hair dogs toy!
Play Entertainer! :)
WE NEED A NEW Q&A!
(pleeeeease)
I believe that you can play "The Flight Of The Bumblebee"
You seem like a lovely person
I took lessons and maybe i can play popeye the sailor man,,,with a book. Either you have it or you dont i guess,,,you are incredible👍
How about Root Beer Rag by Billy Joel
what is your new job?
Have u seen Jim omohundro play? He's amazing.
I have! I met him last year in Disney World! :)
You said you started playing when you were "9"... Was that when you were 9 days, 9 weeks or 9 months old?
Nine hours.

I love Joplin, but I agree about the Entertainer.
Can you play believer by imagine dragons?
Have enjoyed your channel content ! :) .. Some more rag music options .. Root Beer Rag .. Black and White Rag .. Hope you hand all better. Cheers ..
I can see that your dog is also left-handed. meow.

you're not lazy if you can play like that. do you have any more singing videos besides Over the Rainbow? you should!
Hate the Entertainer? Try playing it in Tom Jones "Kiss" style :)
For the hand bump, my wife took Turmeric -Curcuma longa with Piperine pills for 2 weeks and the bump was reduced until vanished. It happens again from time to time due to her household and crafts efforts (she has thin and delicate hands). It is something to do with the blood vessels, they twist or release fluids or something. I played the Whistler on the Xylophone you should look into it

It's a recording. Pretty sure it's a copyright free piece of music as have heard it many places before. I'm sure Kristen can confirm though. Wish I could remember where I've heard it before now though. For some reason reminds me of Charlie Brown.
