Great job! You picked the perfect tempo. Scott Joplin once said ragtime should never be played fast. Many players will rush through this piece as if it were a foot race. They miss the subtleties that Scott so lovingly wove into its fabric.
same, I also found that The Entertainer form Scott Joplin sounds much better in slower tempo than the quick one. Also the sheet clearly stated that it should be played as Not Fast, but somehow people still rush through the piece.
Nice one! You're playing this at just the right tempo. It's my understanding that it drove Joplin near insane to hear people play his rags too fast. He'd hate me for that!
Nice job! This is my favorite song to play on the piano, I've been playing it about 10 years now. One suggestion I might make is to experiment with using the sustain pedal a bit. I like to use it to "extend" the low notes on the left hand. It helps the song feel a bit less staccato. Good tempo as well, most people tend to rush Joplin but you kept it at a nice speed.
@MusicAlly great playing well done, i love playing the maple leaf rag and the entertainer, I find if it's played at a slower pace ur able to get the ragging effect more accurate, which with respect u done very well, greetings from wales uk.
@@sfx3256 yeah its kinda tricky playing it up to tempo on this piano bc its been in my family for 4 generations and the keys are really difficult to press. I should do a new recording at a faster tempo on a better piano lol. I had to take it slow because it literally kills my wrists haha
@@allisonplaysmusic you’re welcome! I learned the maple leaf rag on RUclips like 5 years ago. It’s such a fun piece to play! I uploaded a piano video last night I found an old Pianola Player Piano at a grocery store. Played the Entertainer on it
@@allisonplaysmusic I also have one up in my shorts. But I LOVE your style of playing it’s so relaxing and one can learn how to play just by listening to you I think. Your first video btw is 🔥 🤌🏼😍
That was cool however i have an idea. you could make the lower notes last longer to make it have a more full sound. that would be harder but you got this! great job
I use the sustain pedal to accomplish this when I play ragtime. If you're really good you can use the sostenuto pedal (the middle one), but it doesn't always function correctly on uprights. It's also pretty tricky to get the timing right.
I honestly have know idea haha. I try to play it now and my hands cramp up so bad and I miss intervals I can't believe I was able to get this take without messing up that much lol
Honestly it wasn't too hard to learn. I learned it about two years ago and back then I thought to myself, "there is absolutely no way I can pull this off..." but I just sat down and separated it into segments and played each segment slowly until I mastered the mechanics of it, and then I sped it up gradually as I felt more comfortable with it. I may do a tutorial of this song in the future, but we shall see... If you already play some instruments, I would say picking up piano shouldn't be too difficult, and actually it would probably benefit you because so much of it translates to other instruments. I personally learned piano as my first instrument but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to add it to the mix. So, to answer you question of how hard on a scale from 1-10, I would say 6-7 with some experience, but with no piano experience, maybe closer to 8. Just my opinion, but yeah :) All the best to you!
It's mostly about how willing your are to learn, when I used to get piano lessons as a kid I did not care at all so for many years I gained no skill. Now I actually care about it and am slowly learning.
Great job! You picked the perfect tempo. Scott Joplin once said ragtime should never be played fast. Many players will rush through this piece as if it were a foot race. They miss the subtleties that Scott so lovingly wove into its fabric.
He said that most of the time. For this piece, he stated that it should be in "March Time."
same, I also found that The Entertainer form Scott Joplin sounds much better in slower tempo than the quick one. Also the sheet clearly stated that it should be played as Not Fast, but somehow people still rush through the piece.
Fast meant something else then compared to now. This a bit slower than ideal.
The pianola roll created by Scott Joplin plays it about 1.5 this speed, which is still slower than a lot of people play it now.
At the top of the sheet music of “Fig Leaf Rag,” it says played slowly basically. This one u can have fun with.
Scott Joplin wrote the perfect piece in the Maple Leaf Rag and performed to perfection by Allison you can hear every note being played . Well done
Nice one! You're playing this at just the right tempo. It's my understanding that it drove Joplin near insane to hear people play his rags too fast. He'd hate me for that!
It is a little bit slow. Joplin allowed this piece to be played in "March Time."
so happy to hear a nicely paced performance, instead of a drag race to a fiery finish. those left hand jumps are solid and relaxed.
Absolutely love the. Tempo she plays at , and I’m sure it’s the way Joplin himself would have played it
You can test that there is a copy of him playing it on here apparently.

That's good advice, thank you! I'll try it...
Really enjoy it at this tempo. Ragtime sounds so much better when it's at its proper tempo or a bit slower.
That smirk at the first minute mark. Haha!
Edit: And also that smile at the end!
Awsomework, been practicing and I’m currently at 0:28. The biggest problem for me now is tryna practice without annoying the fam.
haha YES...but telling them you have to practice is a perfect way to avoid chores I've learned :)
@@allisonplaysmusic lol
Yes. When my kids of 7 and 5 are bouncing off the wall and yelling around the house, I play this song and my wife goes bananas. Lol

May I suggest a digital piano and headphones. Get a good keyboard with a solid touch. You’ll be rockin’ with Joplin all night long!
Love this! This is the one piece I’ve just never got around to learning. It sounds great!
Subbed. :)
The hands could’ve been a little more curved but overall amazing job! I enjoyed hearing it!
Tell that to Horowitz!
As a Piano Player, I’ve played for 5 years almost 6 in June, This is a FANTASTIC rendition of this song! Very well played! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you very much for this nicely paced performance.
Nice to hear it played a bit slower. I can hear the harmonic tension a lot more.
Great performance, everything was played correctly. Personally this is my favorite song to play on piano in my meantime.
It wasnt tho
Learning this right now and i love it
J'adore cette musique ! Très bon 👏
merci beaucoup! :)
That's great! I bet that is a hard song to play. Mostly I play in march and waltz time.
I am Proud of you. May God bless.
Just great tempo, glad I found you
You just inspired me to learn to play Maple Leaf Rag.
I LOVE IT!!!
Fantastic Allison! 🎹 👍
Right tempo, you can hear the melody - nice job.
Thank you so much!!
not right tempo, right tempo is 100 not 80 or 90

@@allisonplaysmusic you play I think at 90. I think 100 is little too fast so 95 might be better

Hey listen here buddy I was here first
My friend is down bad here.

Great playing! Nice tempo too :)
Muito bom, Allison. Parabéns.

I love it! I started learning piano a week ago and am going to aspire to play like this in a few years time
Very nice performance if you ask me, keep it going, it will only be better by the time pass!

Sounds the way an A.I. might play. I like a bit more legato....but this is excellent playing.
i like it.. I find the penultimate part the most difficult.
Nice job, Allison!
Bravo 👏
Thanks so much, wonderful.
Awesome
Great! .... Keep it up
Nice playing, Is that a victrola in the background?
I love the slightly out of tune tone of the piano and the pacing.
