"You can't fight in here! This is the war room!' Dr. Strangelove often appears on "Top 100" lists as it is truly a great film. Kubrick made three fantastic anti-war movies, Strangelove, Paths of Glory, and Full Metal Jacket. I'd classify Strangelove as a dark comedy. If you get a chance to see it, when it comes down to the last scene, catch a glimpse of the "Soviet ambassador," played by Peter Bull, trying mightily to avoid cracking up at Peter Sellers' over the top portrayal of Dr. Strangelove.

All three of the main actors were great to watch but Jennifer and Rutger were mesmerising especially because of the Big Bad Wolf/Red Riding Hood dynamic.
I was angry at first with her ending but it was a strong part of the story.
Shocking the first time around. 80s movies didn’t typically do that to an axial love-interest character.
Brought the evil and darkness to focus.
My bestie always said that Rutger’s character was just a heavily exaggerated Hollywood bad guy but I still think he was meant to be a supernatural evil or at least somewhat so. A monstrous evil.

Tarantino has been notoriously critical of Oliver Stone's adaptation of his script, so I don't think he had much, if any, input in the production of NBK. Personally I love the film and its probably my favorite flick based off a Tarantino script. Oliver Stone went way over the top and fully embraced the bizarre aspects and made it completely original. One of my 4 favorite films.

    • @oliverholmes-gunning5372
      @oliverholmes-gunning5372 4 месяца назад

I love Tarantino (Pulp Fiction and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood are two of my top 10 favourite movies of all time), but he was way off with his criticism of NBK. It was definitely very different to his original vision, but that doesn't make it inherently bad. He said that he walked out of the movie after the I Love Mallory scene, which is one of the best and most creative scenes in the entire film! He also said that he hated Woody Harrelson's performance, which is just ridiculous. He famously declared that nobody who is a fan of his work will like NBK, but I guess I'm living proof of how wrong that statement was lol.

Long time watcher, first time commenter.
Darren, you’re really good at this and it helps that so far you’ve matched my tastes 100% which is super unusual. But you’d know that.
But regardless of tastes you can give the gist of a movie and put some steam and intrigue in to your recommendations with fewer words than anyone I’m aware of👍
I’ll just add that you’re right that Dark Skies isn’t streaming on Prime in Australia with membership but it can be had on Prime in Australia for rent super duper cheap for $2.99AUD (I think that’s something like .000001 of a penny USD😁)

    Great video, as usual.
Wish I was of normal size so I could rock me some St. Nicholas, as well.
Had a thought, that I'll toss to commenters and the channel: Are there recent movies that you know you will love, but also know they will "fugg" you up for a bit, and you need to be in the exact right mood?
Mine are the recent "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Infinity Pool". Actually, started dipping my toe into the Infinity Pool, thinking it would be a regular body horror, but the opening cinematography and sound design quickly dispelled that foolish notion.

I think you're wrong about Natural Born Killers. It came out right around the time of Pulp Fiction, they were competitors and Tarantino really distanced himself. He was not happy with that movie and I'm pretty sure they just used his script.

I found it hard to believe the distopian American western titled "The Bad Batch" (2016) Lily Amiripour was not only on your list but not first on the list lol. You are letting me down kind Sir.. I can only hope it's because it has been slightly (just a wee lil bit) occulted and barely visible to mainstream observation over here in the states with little or no marketing despite it being in english, despite the star studded cast that is Jim Carrey, Jason Momoa, Suki Waterhouse, Keanu Reeves and Giovanni Ribisi. Not to be confused by the Star Trek series by the same name making it even more obscure. It pays tribute to Jororowsky the spaghetti westerns and the sound track especially it's themed song by Federale. It is on point!

9:20. I saw "The Hitcher" at the movieshow place (yes, I'm old), and the kid never sees the hitchhiker end anyone's life. It's all speculation on his part. There's only one probably offing--and it's very probable--and that's when Rutger Hauer ties a woman's legs and arms between two semi-trucks, then does what they call draws and quarters her. (Look it up.) When she's torn apart, we the viewers don't see it, and neither does the kid, but viewers and the kid see her tied up, stretched out, and so there's no way she got untied before that semi took off a few seconds later. It's possible the hitcher didn't off her, but it's likely he did. All the other life-endings take place out of view of the kid; we film buffs never see any either.
Well, end of the movie comes along, and the director asks the audience and the kid if it's ok to end the life of someone whom you don't know for sure if he's ever ended anyone's life. The crowd around me in that theatre sure seemed like it was a good thing to end this possibly innocent person's life, but I never stopped having questions. That finger in the French fries was classic cinema.

Great list. One of my favorite and by far the strangest films is sanche New York. Probably seen it ten times and still learn something new. By far Philip Seymour Hoffman’s best film.. rip

I’d like to add to the list the 2005 French movie 13 Tzameti, directed by Bela Babluani. It’s shot in all Black & White, really dark and crazy, and it may not exactly be a great date night movie, unless your significant other or date is a nihilistic psychopath. It’s not currently streamed anywhere that I know, so you have to dig around to find a DVD for sale online. The dialogue is in French, but the Region 1 edition for the US has English subtitles, which is good. It’s a seriously messed-up classic. Flip side - avoid the 2010 Hollywood remake that Brad Pitt’s production company churned out. Original director Bela Babluani made it, but it’s not the same. Somehow, filling the cast with Hollywood stars and filming in color just sucks the heart and black soul out of the original story.
After that, Man Bites Dog is a worthy film that you mentioned but should be on the list. It’s sick, disgusting, perverted and psycho. And it has parts that you laugh at then feel ashamed about. Unless somebody in Hollywood gets some sick, diseased bug up their ass, it will never, ever be remade for American audiences, which is as it should be.
Another movie that should’ve at least gotten a word or honorable mention is another Stanley Kubrick film - A Clockwork Orange. It’s filled with violence, disgusting and offensive things, and it was even banned in England for many years because people couldn’t handle it. When I was a kid, I went to a preview in Hollywood before it officially came out, and people in the audience lost their shit. Some even walked out. After the movie, me and some other kids from college had a sit down with a couple of old-school Hollywood industry insiders, and they were totally freaked out. They hated 2001 when it came out a couple years earlier and thought Kubrick was garbage. Clockwork Orange, to them, convinced them that Kubrick was insane and that his career was over. Of course they were wrong on all counts. Stanley Kubrick is a legend, and I don’t think anybody remembers who those old Hollywood farts were.

Not heard anyone mention Man Bites Dog for years, I watched it early 2000's as a student. It was so dark and bleak whenever we mentioned a dark or bleak movie we'd always say but not as dark as Man Bites Dog. Or we'd ask the question is it as bleak as MBD and we'd always answer straight away nothing is bleaker than MBD. The scene with the old lady in her house got to be the darkest if I remember correctly.

Rec has been dubbed in English (so no reading). The original has 3 additional entries. My favorite is Rec 3. They are all dubbed in English.
There's also a Quarantine 2 that takes place in an airport after an infected rat escapes from the luggage being carried by the dude who set shit up. It's not great horror, but it is an enjoyable movie.
Also Rec is way more enjoyable and scarier that quarantine. They delve a little more in root of the virus which is not an actual disease its actually...can't spoil it.

“Audition” is glaring omission as far as messed up movies go for a list like this, almost any Miike movie really could make the list.
