    Max not exiling Yawgmoth with Redemption Arc for several turns really let Fred go off. Thought he'd get rid of Yawg at first opportunity.

      Fred had all the mana. Just needed that card draw from Yawgmoth. Poor play from Max for sure.

    • @switchback27
      @switchback27 3 месяца назад

      True that Fred had the mana, but in addition to a draw source, Yawg is one of the most vital things in a Chainer deck--a free sac outlet. I get wanting to proceed with your own plan, but using just two mana to exile Yawg and stunt Fred would have definitely helped Max stay in the game longer IMO

      The games from this channel often seem to exhibit weird to sometimes absolutely terrible threat assessment. Not sure if it's because they play with these decks off camera which leads to the group having an entirely different view on which deck is stronger than we actually see in action or there's something else going on there.

    • @switchback27
      @switchback27 3 месяца назад

      I think the games are meant to be pretty casual too, and threat assessment is something you kinda have to concentrate to get down accurately (and even then, it can be wrong as well), so that might have something to do with it I guess.

    I was really hoping Ian would pull the win out after he survived that Bolas' Citadel trigger. That would've been the most epic comeback I've EVER seen. My favorite MTG channel on RUclips, keep up the good work!

    Why did Ian target crypt ghast with reality shift before Fred is in combat? Either that or Fred was technically in combat but backtracked to casted everything? Either way, big misplay on one of the two players there.

    • @jemm113
      @jemm113 3 месяца назад +1

      So the reality shift happened before actually moving to the combat step. When this happens, the transition to the next phase stops entirely, and after the ability or spell resolution the current turn’s player can “go back” and continue playing in the main phase instead of trying to move phases again.
      This is why it’s important to catch these sorts of things after going into the combat phase but specifying that you want to stop and interrupt before going into the declare attackers phase if you want to prevent your opponent from doing something in the main phase before combat (like recasting a hasty creature you bounced, etc.)
      It’s these sorts of unknown rules interactions that people miss that allow others to invalidate or come back from your plays. Having a fundamental understanding of turns and phases is crucial to good play.

    Tbh, I'm never too out off by mesmeric orb: even if most of my decks don't have grave interaction, it's perfectly normal for me to only see 20-25 cards from my deck in a game, mill just determines it's 20-25 from þe middle instead of þe top. But once notion þief and no mercy came out, it just felt like miserable-to-play-against tribal. (Still a good watch, but ya gotta see what's coming when you choose to play þe heel.)

    WTF happened at 6:55? Fred declared that he moves to combat, so Reality Shift was cast at the beginning of combat. How the hell did Fred cast everything else at the beginning of combat at instant speed?

    • @Lazydino59
      @Lazydino59 3 месяца назад +5

      reality shift was cast during the main phase (when Fred passed prio to go to combat), so Fred would have prio back in his main phase after reality shift resolves. Pretty big misplay on the faeries part not waiting until he entered combat

    • @Zaalbarjedi
      @Zaalbarjedi 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Lazydino59 no, it does not work like that. If the active player passes priority with an empty stack during their first main phase, the non-active player is assumed to be acting in beginning of combat unless they are affecting whether a beginning of combat ability triggers. That's an official shortcut to prevent the exact "gotcha" plays like in this video.
      There were no beginning-of-combat triggers, so unless Ian EXPLICITLY stated that he was casting removal during the first main phase (and I don't believe there were any particular reason for that), then it was cast during combat, and Fred borderline cheated the whole following sequence.

    • @thengine7
      @thengine7 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Zaalbarjedi You are absolutely wrong. No attackers were declared, therefore it HAS to be main phase 1. Otherwise Ian can only respond AFTER attackers are declared.

    • @loxdoom
      @loxdoom 3 месяца назад +5

      He declared he wanted to move to combat, passing priority around the table before officially moving to combat. Since someone took action the priority resets and since it's still the main phase the active player can go about doing whatever before attempting to move to combat again. This is more of a competitive move, casual usually don't follow the turn steps and phases too closely.

    • @yoboyo7118
      @yoboyo7118 3 месяца назад

      Declaring to go to combat, I believe. I know must people are familiar with going to crack their fetch lands in response to an opponent’s end phase, but it would make sense to get tripped up by this. I haven’t seen it in a game I’ve played, but cards like Master Warcraft would be unplayable or not made at all if this wasn’t the case
