- Hope you enjoy my reaction to "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" - I hope you liked the movie as much as I did! Let me know your thoughts and how the two movies compare for you!
I’m glad that they’ve introduced Blanc’s “thing”. What I mean is that every movie detective has a “thing” about them, and in Blanc’s case is that he hates dumb things. He seeks challenge and doesn’t like when things are easy or stupid, as shown when he blows up at Miles for how dumb he is. I hope that the next one gives him a case that really challenges him because it would be the one we haven’t scene. In the first one it’s a case that challenges him, in this one it’s a case that doesn’t challenge him at all, so the next one should be one that pushes him to his limits.
I have a working theory that Blanc actually ends up with cases that only look complex or someone other than the murderer does something to muck things up (sometimes without even realizing it).
This was subtly hinted at in the Among Us scene. Blanc was like, "Wait, that's it? She saw me and suddenly the game's over?" He's confused at how simple and one-note the gameplay loop is.
If next movie features a murder he legit can’t piece together and he works with an Asian woman as the secondary lead I’ll laugh my ass off. I feel like that’s the most predictable thing to do for it and that makes me want it to happen.

When I see the end where they turn on Miles, I don’t see it as a selfless gesture but a gesture of people who no longer have anything to gain from helping a person anymore. Miles looses everything because of the fire, he tied everything in his company to Klear. Without money and notoriety he’s useless to anyone else. Plus the lack of care anyone has for Andi’s death is astounding
Yeah, so long as he’s in just enough trouble that he can come back from it, they’d still follow him, but once there’s basically no avoiding his fall, they can do what they all knew was right, because now they’re screwed either way.
Actually, he now has notoriety, which isn't something good.
Exactly their nature. He’s going down so everyone does the right thing to save their own behinds.
My favourite bit of foreshadowing is what Blanc says in the bathtub at the start:
"I don't need games or puzzles. I certainly don't need a vacation. What I need... Is a great case."
If he HAD just gotten the box of Games and Puzzles that invited him on a Vacation... He wouldn't have shown up.
My favorite detail on rewatching is that if you're paying very close attention, you can see that Miles has the phone in his back pocket in a lot of scenes. But you don't think anything of it even though it's mentioned he doesn't have a phone. I think it even flashes across the frame at one point right after Duke dies but you're too distracted by the death/mystery to notice it.
U see all the things that happens in the reveal you can even see Helen throw the recorder in the bag at the pool u can see miles put the gun in the ice and such and blonc actually calls her Helen right before she gets shot
I am in LOVE with the Benoit Blanc movies! I want them to be the new Fast and Furious, like, we get one every two to three years!!! If you're looking for something with the same feel, I recommend reading the works of Agatha Christie. She didn't create the whodunit genre, but she certainly perfected it. She's one of my favorite authors and the Knives Out franchise owes everything to her.
I am just now realizing that Miles even stole the idea of bruning the napking from Lionel
I didn't catch that until I saw a reaction video that included the clip of Miles immediately pointing to Lionel after burning the napkin. Like many things in this movie, I felt so oblivious yet satisfied once I realized it!
@@vertigoneaway Another one I picked up when watching this reaction, Miles was about to misattribute Sherlock Holmes' catchphrase "the game's afoot" to Dr. Watson before Blanc interrupts him by revealing the solution to his murder mystery game
There’s so many things that points to him not having original ideas. I can’t remember them all. He’s good at recognizing and exploiting ideas, that’s about it.
Like the outfit and hairstyle he has when he meets the group was taken from Tom Cruise (I think) from a movie. It’s amazing how deep they went into making that his character.
I only noticed on a rewatch that the musical clue in the invitation box is also directly telling us the structure of the film. “A fugue is a beautiful musical puzzle… layered back over itself it starts to change and turns into a … new structure.” When Helen/Andi is shot, the story also loops back onto itself and changes what we already saw to show a new and different meaning when it replays the same scenes.
“The twinst!?” 😂 I’ve definitely had prophetic dreams about random things whether it be a place I’ll go in the future or something I’ll discover later so I feel you on that one. Also did you notice that Miles got the idea of burning the napkin from Lionel point it out to him? Also him throwing the Beatles guitar on the ground 💀
I think “is it better than the original?” Is entirely the wrong mentality to have going in to a movie like this. The most important thing to me was if it was different enough. Also highly entertaining

This is my first visit to your channel, and I'm fascinated. I've never seen anyone break down a mystery movie on youtube like this, pausing and taking notes as you go. Great idea. And as I already know the outcome, it's thoroughly enjoyable.
Now if this was a normal movie with a twist, and you spent the whole time guessing what was happening, I'd hate it. But it suits this type of mystery and I love it! Thanks for a cool reaction!
The thing about the big twist in this movie is, in a more *traditional* mystery story, it wouldn't have been revealed like this. We would have seen "Andi" get shot just like we did, we'd have seen Blanc lead the others back inside and start his summation, and then we'd have seen "Andi" walking down the stairs. We wouldn't have seen *any* of the footage in between except in a lightning-fast flashback montage as Blanc said something like "That is not Cassandra Brand. That is her twin sister Helen, who came to me after the police told her that her sister Andi was dead. She told me of an email that Andi sent to all of you threatening to expose you all for committing perjury in the trial with a picture of a red envelope; a red envelope that she couldn't find in her sister's house after the death. But while she was looking for the envelope, one of Miles' puzzle boxes appeared, which she opened in her own way, after which she brought it to me. We hatched a plan to come here together to find which of you was responsible for her sister's death and, if possible, to find out what happened to the red envelope." Then, the napkin and envelope would have been used to prove that Miles not only stole the idea but was **present** in Andi's house the night of her death, since he couldn't have gotten it any other way after that email had been sent. They wouldn't have been destroyed in a traditional mystery movie. We'd have missed out on some spectacular acting by Janelle Monae, but at least the Mona Lisa would have been spared.
The twist is that it's not a mystery movie.
i think i like glass onion better. i rewatched knives out after watching and i think i just love this cast and structure just a notch more.

@@believeume122 What bored you about Knives Out? Could it be because, as you have stated, you had seen it before, therefor losing the suprise of the twists and turns you might have had on your first time watching?
I think they are 2 very different movies depending on what you wanna watch one is more light and fun the other is more dark standard murder mystery depending on what mood I’m in is going to dictate what one I like more on that day

Personally I think the first one is a better film, but this one is definitely a lot more cathartic. Also Helen's Mona Lisa pose is everything for me.
I have watched multiple reviews of this movie and I have yet to see anyone comment that Miles's outfit in the flashback where he meets the group is exactly like Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia. I found that to be a very interesting nod and a clue to his character.
The nod to it is cool and all, but I don't actually know if there is any true meaning behind it or if it's just a "hey he looks like that one guy" reference.
Unless it's a reference to magnolias being very layered? Seems like a far-fetched link to make in that instant
@@bLuGhOsT_ It's just another way of conveying that Miles has never had an original idea in his life - whether it's stealing ideas from Andi, or following fashion cues from Tom Cruise in Magnolia.

I probably didn't notice that because a) I'm not interested in fashion and b) I haven't seen Magnolia. Kudos to you though.
You guessed so many parts of the mystery before they were revealed! Sure, maybe the pieces weren’t all put together, but this is so much more than any other RUclipsr I’ve seen be able to solve of this movie.
You quickly got that Miles Bron wasn’t the genius everyone made him out to be, you guessed at some point that he might have even set up Duke’s death to look like it was meant for him! You also proposed, when “Andi” was shot, that it could be Miles taking his chance to shoot her with all the commotion over Duke’s death going on! When Klear was first introduced, you even said, “Is this going to end with the whole island exploding?” The whole island didn’t explode, but the whole house definitely did. So seriously, kudos.

Both are good. I think I like Knives Out slightly better but it's close enough that I could change my mind. Also, I like you stopping/pausing to analyze.
Same sentiment. Knives Out was so good but Glass Onion is so close behind they're pretty equal in my mind. Enjoyed both immensely.
I love both, have not decided which one I enjoy more. And yes, I really like that both films stick it to the man!
Ooohhhh, you've reacted to both movies!!! Yeeessssss!!!! Knives Out is without a doubt my favourite movie of the last 10 years, and Glass Onion is such a worthy successor to this franchise! God, I love this genre! I can't tell you how happy I am there is another movie on the way and many more to come, I hope! I highly recommend checking out Agatha Christie novels, her Hercule Poirot novels in particular as the character of Detective Blanc is heavily based on him. Murder on the Orient Express being the most famous and highly regarded. I would also highly recommend the 1974 film adaptation of the novel, probably the best adaptation of a Christie novel imo. Welcome back Cass!!!
Love your reaction, I love how IMO both films exemplified Selective Attention with Audio illusions in a way for the audience to have that "Oooooh" moment. So both films are great films to show in Psych classes.
P.S don't know if you take reaction requests but I would for you to react to Heartstopper on Netflix, AMAZING adaptation from its source material in the Graphic novels and it's renewed for Season 2/3

They could get something from a Christie short story out of "The Works of Hercules" about a famous contemporary ballet dancer who mysteriously vanishes in the middle of a presentation and a poor cab driver who hires Poirot to try and find her.
It would work quite well for this franchise, in many senses.
15:01 the moment she accidentally figured out the real murder weapon against duke AND andi
Usually a secret identical twin is bad writing; it's hacky and unlikely and kind of a cliche. But Johnson's execution saves it here. Introducing that storyline by weaving it back into the initial setup; like there was always a twin and clues to show us, is what makes this twist feel earnt. The notebook saving Helen's life by taking the bullet is also a pretty big cliche. But the combination of comedy and setup saves it again. Why else introduce Jeremy Renner hot sauce!! This one is tougher but the character has become so likeable that it's hard to deny we want her victory. Otherwise Johnson would have had to reveal an identical secret triplet! Helen is the actual protagonist of this movie but we dont know this until the second act. She is literally the Mona Lisa; two states of being combined in one person.
It's a bit of a tradition in all the best murder mysteries for half the "twist" to be the very act of "wait, you're seriously going to put a cliche that big into the story and still make it pay off?" The outrageousness of it is part of the charm.
I love how we’ve all gotten so focused on trying to figure out who did it. And so as an audience we think way to hard about it and therefore like Blanc overlook literally all the stupid shit miles does

On first viewing I loved it but slightly preferred Knives Out. Then I watched some RUclips videos about clues and call backs you may have missed etc, and rewatched it, and realised just how nuanced it was. It's worth doing. On second viewing I decided they're about equal.

Have you seen the show "Sherlock"? with Benedict Cumberbatch, same intricate cases...etc. Anyway, loved the reaction, looking forward to the next ones!

technically this is not a whodunit. it's not something you figure out, in a real whodunit, like Agatha christie, all the information is given to you so you can try to solve the puzzle, but these movies, and basically what I write, are more like howdunits. you just enjoy the twists as they withhold information so you can enjoy the surprises. I do enjoy these, though these are kinda a new breed of mystery movies, not like a traditional whodunit, these are more akin to oceans eleven, where you just watch how it's all done and how cool and fun it all comes together.
I don't know if I would agree.
The first one was a howdunit until the last 5 minutes, but Glass Onion had all clues openly shown on-screen, so we can try to find whodunit.
The twin twist was kept hidden until about half the second act, but it was revealed with time enough to be included in our calculations.
That is so true, and it becomes a better film once you realize that.
It fails miserably as a whodunit, but take a step back and you'll realize that that it doesn't even try to be.
I think it is purely Netflix marketing, that tries to sell it as such.
It's a story about hubris and downfall and it is set in Greece - it is literally a Greek tragedy.

All the clues are there for the viewer to see - but it's not supposed to be a whodunit. It's a glass onion. You expect it to have layers you can peel back but the truth is that you can stare right at its center from the very beginning. We just don't see what's right in front of us because we expect something else: a clever killer with an unknown motive. Instead the motive is clear and the killer is dumb. That's the whole point. No need to guess who did it - it's the most obvious suspect.
I expected the hourly dong to play a part like the noonday gun in the Evil Under the Sun film adaptation
Was it in Evil Under the Sun that a side character kept pestering the hotel staff waiting for certain news on the newspaper (like Duke with his notifications) or am I mixing my Christies?

But, there were quite a few surprises after that. I think I like the cast more in Knives Out, but the twists in this one are great.

I liked the first ones mystery more, but the second ones fun and drama more. Both are top tier, neither needs to be objectively better than the other. At least imo.

Yes it was better than Knives Out. I do like both movies ,but I think Glass Onion is the better of the two. Love your reactions to these movies and uh good job figuring it out before the reveal even if by speculation, still pretty awesome. I can tell you enjoy mysteries.
Having seen the movie hearing all your crazy theories was SO FUN! I absolutely loved it!
I love the social commentary of both films but this one was especially fun because it was more on the surface, poking fun at COVID and the right with that "you're good" lol like what. Donald trump said you can inject bleach to fight covid.
I love your theories, they're Hella funny 😂. If you want detectives , you should watch enola Holmes 1 and enola Holmes 2 , both are really good mystery movies
I'm not sure we can call any of the twists original. But them playing on our expectations when everything is just so simple and "dumb" is great.
Knives Out 1 & 2 are different yet similar.
Benoit Blanc is the main character and play by the rule. There is a heroine who did not play by the rule. Rian Johnson is a master in subverting expectations and mis-directions. The supporting cast were well casted.
If pressed, my favorite is Knives Out 2.

First, I'm really glad to have found you again doing reactions.
I wasn't crazy about this movie. I really loved Knives Out but had problems with this.
You used the word, "performative", and I agree. In fact, I didn't think anybody in this movie acted like a real person. Maybe that was the point, that they were out of touch elites. But the writing wasn't clever enough to make it interesting.
Another point is that Benoit was so quick to figure out what was going on, and then we find out that he knew a lot that we didn't know, which felt like cheating us.
Another is that it was half way through the movie before we had a murder to solve. Before that the story seemed pointless.
The last is that Knives Out had Marta as a sympathetic core of the story. The movie didn't make me feel sympathetic about any of the characters.
Put it this way, if this movie had come out first, I never would have watched the second.

If you want another murder mystery, I highly recommend The Pale Blue Eye (2022). It's quite good but it's not comedic like the Detective Blanc series.

I think I prefer Knives Out, but there were *aspects* of Glass Onion that I prefer. Maybe in the future, when I'm able to look back at both films from a distance, I'll prefer Glass Onion.

Miles is on Helen's suspect list, but on the same line as the letters M and O, so you don't realize they haven't been filling those in.

I actually love Glass Onion so much better even though I know a lot say the first was better. I actually didn't care that much foir the first but this movie had character that really hooked me in and rooted so hard for andin turn making me feel more connected to the movie.
All Miles had to do to find out who gave Blanc the invitation was to ask everyone else for their invitations, whoever doesn't have it did it.
But no, he just let the world's greatest detective to be in his house uninvited right after he commited murder lol
Miles knew it was "Andi", because he knew it was her twin all along. It wasn't a mystery to him, only to us.

But seriously, Rian's Knives Out movies have so far both been "Eat-the-Rich" type movies. Knives Out skewered Old Money; Glass Onion eviscerates New Money, or rather the whole "tech guru" crypto-bro, clout-chaser, influencer culture and all of those who latch on to those golden titties. Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs are all tech icons lampooned in this movie.
The whole Mona Lisa thing was actually a reference to Helen; several times, they show her face in a close-up with the same expression but from a different angle. Helen plays the everyman, she is the audience. She does everything an audience member would want - revenged for a sister's murder, violence in the face of impotence. But the only thing that brings down Miles is the fact that he loses his grip on the Sh*theads and they turn on him. The movie ends on her face because she doesn't get justice, and look how much it took for the Sh*theads to turn on Miles - it's a pyrrhic victory and a bittersweet commentary on current society.

Let me ask a question here, because it makes the whole movie fall apart. Why would Miles invite Andi to his birthday party when he killed her before he sent out the invite? It can’t be because he doesn’t want to be suspicious because he has a legitimate reason to not invite her considering he had a falling out with Andi (court case). If Miles doesn’t invite Andi, Helen isn’t there to get the invite (an extreme contrivance) and she doesn’t invite Blanc to go to the island. Movie over.
He mentions how he had commissioned the box somewhere (obviously before the murder), which means that he would have to go out of his way to stop the box, and That would be suspicious.
The real quistion is why he invited her in the first place - they had their falling out over a year prior. She wasn't even there the last time and that was BEFORE the conclusion of the trial.
@@tobiashenriksen7068 Well its his company that delivers the box he could just have his company lie and say they delivered it when they didn’t. Your second paragraph is exactly my point. It makes no sense why he would invite Andi at all before or after he murders her
For me there is two possibilities, he either really did to it to not seem suspicious or he just sent it before he murdered her and didn't cancel it.
I see Miles as the type of guy who would want to seem above the "drama" - after all, *she* is the one who sued *him*, and he went over to her house under the guise of wanting to make amends. He'd probably prefer to look like the bigger person compared to Andi, rather than dropping her completely. And the murder seemed like it was done impulsively without much planning, only a few hours (edit: more like days? just.. soon after :D ) after the email. So I wouldn't put it past him that he just didn't plan in that much depth.
Also @Tobias the trial happened only a few months prior, so this is probably the first meetup for the friend group after that.
Miles is dumb. Like, really really dumb. That's all the answer you need.

The only mistake I think that was made was calling the movie “Glass Onion: A Knove’s Out Mystery”. Rain Johnson has created a great new detective that could be up there with Sherlock, Columbia, Hercules Perot. He should have called the movie “Glass Onion: A (whatever his name is) mystery”
The fact that you don't remember his name immediately showcases why they chose the name of the first movie to name the franchise.

Fun fact: Rian Johnson argued with Netflix over this! He DID NOT WANT the movie title to have “Knives Out” attached to it, Netflix mandated it so they could advertise it better.
Johnson didn't even want it to be called a mystery, because, well, it's not.
