@@deluxereissue Aerosmith's "Cryin'" and The Crush both came out in '93... I'd say that was her breakout year because she became instantly recognizable. "Clueless" is definitely her signature role. That's the one everyone thinks of.
Since you've reacted to Cruel Intentions (based on the 1782 French play "Les Liaisons Dangereuses") and now Clueless (based on Jane Austen's "Emma") maybe you could continue with other teen movies based on classic literature? Some ideas...Easy A based on The Scarlet Letter, 10 Things I Hate About You based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Valley Girl based on Romeo and Juliet, Warm Bodies also based on Romeo and Juliet, She's All That based on Pygmallion...
I love the trend of adapting classic novels/plays as modern movies and I'm kind of sad that seems to have disappeared. For other great ones of the trend: 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions, and of course She's the Man Also knowing that it's an adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma explains some of plot, especially the photo Elton puts up in his locker - in the novel, Emma (Cher) takes days or weeks to paint a portrait of Harriet (Tai) which Elton then obsesses over, which just doesn't quite translate to photography :D
Don't forget Get Over It (2001) [Midsummer Night's Dream], My Own Private Idaho (1991) [mix of the King Henry plays], and O (2001) [Othello]. I've always especially loved Get Over It, cheesy though it is.
There's supposed to be a modern retelling of Much Ado About Nothing later this year starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), so we could be seeing this genre making a comeback during the next few years (especially since the whole 30-year nostalgia cycle means we should be due for a throwback to the culture and style of the 90s)
Clueless is a modern adaptation of the book "Emma" by Jane Austin, even if her work is usually consider "serious" I found the book comedic and quiet like social critique of the high rich class. So for that reason, they are pretty much the same movie but I would recommend you to watch "Emma" 2020 version that is set in 1800s and the custom design is beautiful and the cinematography is also georgeous.
Oh, I would not say her work is consider serious, I would say that she wrote social commentary comedy romance books. Even her most serious book - Mansfield park is still pretty funny, and there is a theory that her last book, Anne Elliot, is less funny simply because it was not yet finished. I actually adore 2020 Emma adaptation b/c imho that movie understood that Jane Austen was funny, and the movie captures that.
@@lenusniq_9746 I am not native english speaker, so I was trying to say that her work is seen as this huge thing that some people can have this idea of her work being so serious when is comedy😅

Rad reaction Cass! Cher's dad is the best in this movie. The line "I have a .45 and I doubt anybody would miss you" is hilarious! This movie has good comedy and heart and that's an awesome combination. Keep up the good reactions and many blessings to you and yours.
Alicia Silverstone I believe started in the Aerosmith videos, and might have been in “the Crush” before this, but that might have been just after, but I feel like she was younger in that. The Crush is pretty good, it’s a thriller about a girl getting a crush on her grown neighbor played by Cary Elwes from “the Princess Bride, then her crush gets out of hand and she becomes obsessed with him..
It's very 90s because the writers took the time to go to American high schools to listen to how kids were actually talking. The language isn't treated as some 'ah ha!' moment either. It's just the way they talk. Then the costume designer mixed on trend clothing of the day from Contempo Casuals, Wet Seal, or Delia's with very exclusive French and Italian designers (things someone in Cher's position would have access to). So Cher is very fashionable while also looking very timeless. The white Calvin Klein dress, the red and black check coat and skirt w/ the black stockings and beret, even the pink satin bridesmaid dress at the end; you could wear all those tomorrow and probably get a ton of compliments. Side note: I saw this in the theater and I asked my teacher mother if the grades thing was legit. She said "if you can truly convince a teacher to give you an A instead of a C, that's the grade you earned."
I mean, with the grades thing, some of the 'negotiations' were just Cher asking for/doing extra credit assignments, which is super normal. The other was just playing on sympathies, which is also somewhat normal lol. C to an A is obviously really something unless a kid turned in like, mountains of extra credit/late work
Let's take a moment to appreciate the gym teacher. Played by the ever fabulous Julie Brown. Who gave us the MTV show "Just Say Julie", the album "Trapped in the Body of a White Girl" featuring the songs "Earth Girls Are Easy" and "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun". She appeared in the film "Eart Girls Are Easy" with Geena Davis. And co-wrote the original "Camp Rock" DCOM. (She even appears onscreen).

I think it's definitely a good movie to analyze. Amy Heckerling's magnum opus, I think and it's a shame she wasn't granted more freedom to do things after turning this in. I think one of the main reasons it works is because it's never really making fun of Cher. She's ditzy and privileged but loving and a teenager.
Amy Heckerling actually didn’t plan on Cher miss pronouncing the word Haitians. Alicia Silverstone mispronounced it and they kept it in. She thought it was funnier and it was 😂 I’d also like to add that the direction of Amy Heckerling and Alicia Silverstone’s execution, did a really great job at making Cher likable and I was really happy you noticed that, she wanted us to root for her, even though she was spoiled and wealthy.
I was a kid when this movie came out. When Tai said she’d never had straight friends before, I thought she was referring to sexuality. It didn’t occur to me until years later that she was talking about drug use.
I, too, have thrown myself at a gay boy even though he was very openly and obviously gay to everyone, but me apparently 😅 I was like 14 in my defense lol.
This was a modern day version of the book, Emma. Gwyneth Paltro played the Emma role, in a movie called Emma. I love this version of the story as much as I do the book and original screenplay/movie.
I wish more people knew this because otherwise they often conclude there was “no reason whatsoever” to include certain things lol. Which is understandable if you have no context.
So glad you found your way to Brittany Murphy. Almost all her movies are gold. Especially "The Black Book" , and "The Ramen Girl". "Neverwas" is an obscure but sentimental favorite, as well.
My favorite teen movie includes FOUR teenagers. They are brothers. They get into fights. They like pizza, they live in the sewer, and they are MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
A movie I think you'd appreciate is Return to Me. Oddly, not many reactors know about it. David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, and one of the best supporting casts you'll ever see, especially especially especially in a romantic comedy. As rom-coms go, it's one of the best.
The way a lot of people didn't pick up on Christian right away back then and also a lot of reactors watching it now don't pick up on it right away but you were like "he's wearing a fedora in 1995" lmaooooo
A genuinely great movie with magnificent character writing. The main characters are all complex. They're not stereotypical cutouts, they're smart sometimes, dumb sometimes like all teens are. They're all decent people but not blandly nice. Their characters are so well defined that judt watching them interact is a pleasure. Oh and the dialogue is much cleverer than it needed to be.
When Cher explains how she negotiated her report card and her dad says "Honey, I couldn't be happier than if they were based on real grades" just kills me Top teen movies include 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On, Whip It, Juno, Now and Then, Superbad, and Dick
Not a teen movie recommendation, but TV show set in high school: Freaks and Geeks. It's only one season, a ton of cast members are recognizable now, and it's really good. Paul Feig and Judd Apatow were the main creative forces behind it.
I love that you picked up on Cher being smart and kind so early. The movie initially comes off as superficial, and it always bums me out when people don't see beyond that. We shouldn't judge teenage girls by their interests and the way they talk.
this is probably the "movie star" big break for Silverstone, but by that point she had already starred (with Liv Tyler) in three Aerosmith vids that MTV played like 27 times a day, so pretty much every young person knew about her
At the beginning of this video, and as someone who has seen it, yes, it is THAT movie lol. You nailed it. XD Genuinely iconic, with great music, and like so many classic movies from the ‘90s, an excellent script. Brilliant adaptation of Emma.
As a parent I can translate, "WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A NICE FAMILY DINNER!" is parent speak for, "I'd like a nice family dinner without any issues and urgently." But it can be easily confused with, "Im f***ing hungry, do as your told and let me eat!" I hope I helped.
After watching the reaction: I don’t think it’s *just* fun and nothing deeper, but I know what you mean in that it is what it is. To me, that’s a sign of how creative and clever it is. The way it adapted Emma is so funny. XD One could definitely critique the portrayal of Dionne’s romance, but I think, like with Cher and Tai’s reconciliation, their relationship was fundamentally quite strong. Beneath the drama, they cared about and admired each other. And both Tai and Cher were pretty sweet people who relied on one another to a degree. Like you said, it was realistic in that sense. Great reaction!
Both are based on centuries old novels! I don’t think that’s a coincidence so much as how they adapted the relationships to “modern day.” You know how people are marrying or dating their cousins or family friend who’s decades older than they are in those things? Lol.
I adore this movie! I was 12 when it came out, & would quote it ALL the time. I always erupt when Mr. Hall pulls Travis off the window and says, "And could the su*cide attempts PLEASE be postponed until next period!" 😂 'Can't Hardly Wait' & 'Empire Records' are my favorite better-known teen comedies from the 90's, but a lesser-known favorite is 'Loser' starring Jason Biggs & Mena Suvari. It came out in 2000, but is also an Amy Heckerling film & is steeped in classic 90's tropes. You should check out any of those three. They instantly make a tough day better for me. And their soundtracks are exquisite! 🥰
Hey Cass! Loved your reaction, as always! A few important teen films you may not have seen (and non-spoiler comments about them): Metropolitan - If you consider 18, home from first semester of college to be a “teen” film, this is arguably the best of all time. But it is somewhat niche. It is more like a play than a traditional film. Made by iconic filmmaker Whit Stillman. Risky Business - The film that propelled Tom Cruise to stardom. Pump Up The Volume - The teen film, made in 1989 and released in 1990, that signaled the end of the 80s and beginning of something new. One leg firmly in each decade. Starring 80s/90s icon Christian Slater. Easy A - Emma Stone being awesome for 100 minutes. Superbad - must-watch classic, though you’ve probably already seen it. Booksmart - completely derivative of Superbad, but also excellent. Definitely worth seeing.
I'm going to add a movie to your list: "Valley Girl" (1982). Nicolas Cage's film debut and a super fun 80s teen romantic comedy. Like "Clueless", "Valley Girl" was directed by a female director, Martha Coolidge. For me, it's Valley Girl for 80s, Clueless for 90s and Mean Girls for 2000s.
26:01 - This is a cover of All by Myself sung by Jewel but Celine Dion's version didn't come until the following year. Original song is by Eric Carmen.
Yes- everyone significant in the movie is clueless at some point in their own parts of the story. Except her dad. The introduction of Tai shows the culture shock of Tai being from the East coast when Tai asks for herbal refreshements- or ouid, but Cher and Dionne think she means literal tea. So they offer the Coke- as in soda, while Tai thinks they mean as in the drug. She figures out it's not when they tell her not to get in with the stoner kids and do ouid all day. The part where she says "Sh!t, you guys, I never had straight friends before!" and Cher and Dionne look at each other confused was because in California straight meant sexuality, but Tai means "Straight-edge" or "doesn't use drugs/alcohol". Christian probably just thought he would be the gay best friend of one of the most popular girls. Clueless, Legally Blonde, Where the Heart Is, and Fried Green Tomatoes are on my "always rewatch" list that give me the same nostalgia. Some (sorta) time-travel-ish movies to watch that are from that same era are Pleasantville and Blast from the Past. I see someone else mentions The Craft- if you want the spooky movies us goths watched over and over from that area it would be The Craft, The Crow, and Interview With the Vampire.
JANE AUSTEN'S "EMMA." Cher = Emma Woodhouse Josh = Mr. Knightly Dionne = Miss Taylor/ Mrs. Weston (in terms of Cher/Emma going to Dionne/Mrs. Weston for advice) Mr. Hall & MIss Geist = Marriage of Mr. & Mrs. Weston (Cher/Emma takes pride in feeling responsible for their relationship) Murray = Mr. Weston Tai = Harriet Smith Elton = Mr. Elton Travis = Mr. Robert Martin (the farmer!) Amber = Mrs. Elton Christian = Frank Churchill Cher and Emma's respective fathers pose an interesting comparison.
Some good teen movies, if you haven't seen are Dazed and Confused, Better Off Dead, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, 3 O'Clock High, My Best Friend is a Vampire, and as someone else mentioned, The Craft. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, too
I think other classic teen movies has to be Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing, the Outsiders, and Dead Poets Society.
I was 8 years old when this came out I miss the 90s I was a teenager of the 90s also. I remember the 90s like it was yesterday you might like the matrix.
This is one of my top 5 movies of all time. Gosford Park is in there too, along with Chungking Express (and Fallen Angels as a single movie broken into two) and Aliens. Not sure the order though. Thanks for reacting to this. It was fun to watch.
Agree, it's a fun movie.Try Gotcha! ; Easy A ; Mean Girls ; Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead ; The Craft .. BTW Alicia also played Batgirl in Batman & Robin
Cass, this was Alicia's major break out roles as before this she appeared in a episode of "The Wonder Years" in 1992, two TV films and a feature film in 1993 called "Torch Song", "Scattered Dreams" & "The Crush", a episode of "Rebel Highway" in 1994 as well as a TV filmed called "Cool and the Crazy", before staring in "Hideaway" followed by "Clueless" in 1995.
I also love "Josie and the Pussycats" (2001), a kind of teen movie but was ahead of it's time in many ways and was totally misconstrued by critics and teen audiences .. it was a parody of pop culture. It bombed at the box office but since has become a cult classic.

Can’t Hardly Wait is my favorite teen movie! Soooo good 😂
Empire Records is an underrated gem! Amazing soundtrack and so much fun
When Cher explains how she negotiated her report card and her dad says "Honey, I couldn't be happier than if they were based on real grades" just kills me
Top teen movies include 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On, Whip It, Juno, Now and Then, Superbad, and Dick
It’s timeless because it’s based on Emma, a timeless novel.
The way I had literally just made the disgust with tongue out face a second before you said “okay so we all just collectively got the ick, right?”
My favorite teen movie is 10 Things I hate About You. Also like Thirteen even though it's not a typical teen movie. And can't forget Cruel Intentions.
This is California the movie, required watching no matter the generation.
Clueless is a retelling of 'Emma' by Jane Austen.
As a parent I can translate, "WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A NICE FAMILY DINNER!" is parent speak for, "I'd like a nice family dinner without any issues and urgently."
But it can be easily confused with, "Im f***ing hungry, do as your told and let me eat!"
I hope I helped.
Say Anything is my #1 teen movie ever. I've been a John Cusack fan ever since. I also love Easy A.
Favorites: pump up the volume, some kind of wonderful and clueless
After watching the reaction: I don’t think it’s *just* fun and nothing deeper, but I know what you mean in that it is what it is. To me, that’s a sign of how creative and clever it is. The way it adapted Emma is so funny. XD
One could definitely critique the portrayal of Dionne’s romance, but I think, like with Cher and Tai’s reconciliation, their relationship was fundamentally quite strong. Beneath the drama, they cared about and admired each other. And both Tai and Cher were pretty sweet people who relied on one another to a degree. Like you said, it was realistic in that sense. Great reaction!
Holy crap - I just realised this movie and Cruel Intentions have the whole step-sibling thing in common. I have seen both movies 100 times.
Both are based on centuries old novels! I don’t think that’s a coincidence so much as how they adapted the relationships to “modern day.” You know how people are marrying or dating their cousins or family friend who’s decades older than they are in those things? Lol.
Because it's an adaptation of Emma, by Jane Austen. ❤
13:00 Bahaha, in all the millions of times I've watched this movie, I never noticed that Dr. Seuss haircut.
Omg Paul, Alicia, Brittney and Stacy were GORGEOUS in this movie....like omg they were all so damn attractive
I really liked the 90s run of teen movies adapted from classic literature. This and 10 Things were the best of them imho
Dr. Seuss hair, dancing with the cat in the hat.😂
Hey Cass! Loved your reaction, as always!
A few important teen films you may not have seen (and non-spoiler comments about them):
Metropolitan - If you consider 18, home from first semester of college to be a “teen” film, this is arguably the best of all time.
Definitely worth seeing.
just started watching you (for the first time) and i love your voice
When Cher said Daddy was a litigator and made $500 an hour, understand that when he wins a huge corporate case, he makes millions 😊
13:13 Its called a "Pipi Longstocking" After the fictional character.
And now you'll understand the music video for Iggy Azalea's 2014 hit, Fancy! 😁 (Wait, 2014?!? 😲)
I love Clueless. And I don't normally like teen movies, but this one is great!
Favorite teen movie (also favorite movie period) is Heathers
Mean Girls and Legally Blonde are GREAT if you have not seen them
26:01 - This is a cover of All by Myself sung by Jewel but Celine Dion's version didn't come until the following year. Original song is by Eric Carmen.
I loved her movie blast from the past. So much fun
If you haven't seen them so: Princess diaries, 13 going on 30, freaky friday, a walk to remember.
JANE AUSTEN'S "EMMA."
Cher = Emma Woodhouse
Josh = Mr. Knightly
Dionne = Miss Taylor/ Mrs. Weston (in terms of Cher/Emma going to Dionne/Mrs. Weston for advice)
Mr. Hall & MIss Geist = Marriage of Mr. & Mrs. Weston (Cher/Emma takes pride in feeling responsible for their relationship)
Murray = Mr. Weston
Tai = Harriet Smith
Elton = Mr. Elton
Travis = Mr. Robert Martin (the farmer!)
Amber = Mrs. Elton
Christian = Frank Churchill
Cher and Emma's respective fathers pose an interesting comparison.
4:52 and he’s the dinosaur from Toy Story! 🥰🥰
THE CRAFT THE CRAFT THE CRAFT THE CRAFT
Some good teen movies, if you haven't seen are Dazed and Confused, Better Off Dead, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, 3 O'Clock High, My Best Friend is a Vampire, and as someone else mentioned, The Craft. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, too
favorite teen movies: clueless & ferris bueller’s day off
My favourite teen movie is 10 Things I Hate About You! A reaction to that would be cool, it´s iconic
I think other classic teen movies has to be Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing, the Outsiders, and Dead Poets Society.
The perfect compliment to this movie is Legally Blond.
I was 8 years old when this came out I miss the 90s I was a teenager of the 90s also. I remember the 90s like it was yesterday you might like the matrix.
It's timeless because it's based on Jane Austin story...which are all timeless
For me the original "Mean Girls" is Heathers from the 80's. It stars Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It's more of a dark comedy from that time.
This is one of my top 5 movies of all time. Gosford Park is in there too, along with Chungking Express (and Fallen Angels as a single movie broken into two) and Aliens. Not sure the order though.
Thanks for reacting to this. It was fun to watch.
the Dr seuss played sabrina, the teenage witch with Melissa joan Hart. She was Morgan in sabrina College years.
The Aerosmith videos were also really big for her in her early career.
@@irktog5175 Very true.
"Cryin" and "Amazing" were in 1993 and "Crazy" in 1994 before "Clueless" in 1995.
I also love "Josie and the Pussycats" (2001), a kind of teen movie but was ahead of it's time in many ways and was totally misconstrued by critics and teen audiences .. it was a parody of pop culture. It bombed at the box office but since has become a cult classic.
Oh my god, you're back!!!! You've been back for 7 months!!! I never knew! Subscribing now! You have been totally missed!!! PS: I see you're doing TV shows. Have you seen "Severance" yet? From last year? it's only 9 episodes, it's mindblowing, I think you would do great on that show! Ok, checking out this "Clueless" reaction now. I have such a great memory of seeing this in the theatre, I had just broken up with someone and went to the movies and saw three movies in one day! lol. And "Clueless" was the first. It was at the $3 movie theatre in Manhattan (now closed!). GREAT to see you, Cass!!!!!!!
