I noticed this and created a RUclips short about this as well. I have been experimenting with this as well. In my first one, I got about 250 views, definitely outperforming my other livestreams.
Great video with lots of useful information. I am small RUclipsr, and I think that for small channels the most important thing is to have good presence from the beginning. If you are not popular, people won't care even if you have the best videos and the best content on platform. I am not beginner anymore, but I know how hard it can be (and honestly if I didn't use a bit of Famester, I would have quit a long time ago. It made everything much easier for me, especially getting to 1000 subs and view hours).
RUclips keeps pushing Shorts meanwhile TikTok is pushing horizontal videos and long form. 😂Making RUclips Shorts was the biggest mistake I did on my channel that stagnated my long form so I deleted them all because I noticed how many big creators don't even upload Shorts regularly. I suggest to take caution when doing Shorts even this livestream feature. I hope this new feature will really help.
We livestream twice a week on our running channel. Would you recommend using this function alongside the traditional livestream? For example have my phone on whilst we have the normal view from the desktop?
Thank you! I'm going to jump in and start experimenting. My shorts are getting some nice views and I'd love to try this to see how to convert views to my long form. Thank you for keeping up up to date! So appreciate TM, Sean, Nolan, Omar and the team!
Excellent video, thank you! Personally I really like the vertical livestream. I’ve been using it every day for a few weeks. It’s fun and easy to do. Not to mention, it counts towards watch time hours!
In case anyone was wondering (if they currently livestream) you can run simultaneous livestreams one in landscape with OBS for normal stream/multi streams then you can run a seperate vertical stream through your phone. Also there's little to no organic discovery through youtube live compared to TikTok's live which will feed you viewers constantly. Maybe this is my niche being a musician that isn't effective in the vertical stream but TikTok will normally bring in 2K unique viewers over 90 mins for me and youtube got me 15 unique viewers. Early days but make sure you are also trying tiktok's vertical livestream if you are wanting to grow a livestream as a small creator. Best of luck streaming fam!
Wow imagine my surprise that I watch this video and I am the first vertical live that pops up! haha this channel has helped me tremendously with growing my channel and ministry through RUclips. I love that you guys are unapologetically Christian while providing useful content to everyone! Thank you! @Nolan I wonder what was Think Media's opinion on doing simultaneous live streaming. I tested doing the normal horizontal and vertical format at the same time that day and it yielded good results, however, I would ike to know what you thought about that strategy. I do preachings and teachings so on the main live it's 4k with verse pulled up as a scene, and the vertical shorts stream is normal from my phone. And just as some real world data for Think Media if a future video was coming. My experience was that financially it seems like users are far more inclined to donate via supers and chat on mobile because it's more convenient. This may be something to consider if you are doing a test case scenario, or benefits to doing this format. The live that was featured gained 1.4k viewers when typically my live stream gets about 100-150 views in about 48hrs. This seems like a great place for creators to grow.
As someone who does a one-take recorded podcast, I think this would be great to try out and see if our topics are reaching those we want. We already create shorts out of the long-form to add to the Shorts feed as well. Love to try something new. My only hesitation is my own consuming habit of immediately swiping up any "LIVE" feed on TikTok. I find them annoying when I'm scrolling. We'll see!
This is VERY insightful and I think it will work well once it’s up and going. When I clicked on my “Live” when attempting a live stream post it said it will be ready in 24hours 🤷♂️
Killer update! You rock, thanks for letting us know us the new RUclips feature. I plan to start using this feature to experiment and reach a larger audience. I can see how this feature can help me niche down and get back to my community.
I run an English education channel and I'm really eager to give this function a test run. I livestream semi-regularly on RUclips using StreamYard and find myself completely relying on the slideshow function to present information. What do you think will look better on the viewer's end: printing text on paper in reverse to hold up when I need to show text on screen or holding up an iPad with a reverse image? EDIT: No need to reverse text. RUclips flips the image for viewers.
About time YT added this feature. I think it will help smaller channels grow and also create a better connection with viewers. I find that this is why my TT audience watch on there when I live stream.
I think that the algo is bad in this one scenario...at least IMO LOL. I don't think people want to see livestreams that they would never watch just because they are the only people livestreaming....but that's just me. Thanks for showing us all of this, I already have ideas of how I might use this feature.
RUclips has missing something really important, shop. Tiktok has an offer or discounts for people who buy things in the live stream. RUclips Short dont.
Great content!! Will these features also works with, for example, streaming with Streamyard for vertical, etc or must be done with phone to access polls, etc?
This is really exciting!! I see a great opportunity to really connect with your audience. I haven't done a live yet but it's on the agenda for this spring/summer. I am a gardening channel and my plan is to do some lives from in the garden this summer, so people can ask about specific things and I can show them in real time. This vertical method might be a great way to do that, it will feel like they are right there in the garden with me :)
I was very excited by the feature, however I can't work out how to stream to the shorts feed from OBS (while also streaming horizontal live as I usually do. I'm using Vertical plugin too - also steaming to Twitch at the same time...) Anyone have any ideas? I've seen zero other channels mention this new functionality, so there is very little help out there on this subject.
Huh. May have to give this a go. I stream every Saturday and get a consistent, cozy-sized, audience. I also share news and screen shots, which at first glance won't work - no obs, but the discoverability...hmmmm
Gonna give it a try tomorrow with our channel members! We do our movie news live every Friday at Noon Pacific time anyway. so I may give a little sneak peek to our members to test this out. Thanks for the explainer, Nolan! -- Christy
Sounds like a great opportunity for getting in the public eye. I don't know if it's possible to switch between front and rear camera but that would be awesome in mid stream. ❤😮😊
Great video! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try it! Does this mean we would live stream through RUclips and not through something like stream yard?
Yt show stream yard some love... U know we trying this vertical stuff but we want multiple guests and an easy way to hit the like button. Vertical alone lives do the best numbers tho. It aint a production thing as we all know u can do vertical lives on stream yard. A service sean, nick, dee, omar and me all use stream yard. Whats the feeezy Btw trying it yesterday and today as well
@@ProfessionalK9Solutions yes but it is trash compared to yt live. So hard to find the comment button. Best thing to do is use yt vertical live w 1 guest. Now he can go live in stream yard from his comp and get more guest i think, but just do vertical videos everyday for a week. Trust me... Hit it while yt is pushing jt. They are not pushing shorts, but if u gave alot of short subs like me this is perfect
RUclips is focusing more on shorts to become Tiktok and by doing so they are slowly destroying the income of RUclips Creators as RUclips wants creators to make more Shorts, but shorts don't make money. Imagine this video as a short, it would have no meaning to it. You need time to understand a topic. Shorts are giving views but there is no loyalty among shorts viewers. RUclips is just training its audience by this slow transition since September, 2020. It's now 3.5 years and RUclips has changed its focus fully to shorts. Even desktop screens are full of shorts. In the next 5 years RUclips will end normal videos and there will be just mindless garbage shorts where creators won't make any money and everyone will fight for more and more views.
@@allthecommonsense Tiktok creators have no loyalty among theirs followers, they are just following. But on RUclips, viewers used to search for our content which is not possible in Tiktok, they used to watch our videos and if they found value in our content they used to subscribe to us and used to wait for the creators next video. When was the last time we waited for the next short of a RUclips Creator. The reason is that shorts have no value in them. If you have a problem or an issue which can be solved or fixed in less than 60 seconds then it wasn't that important to you. It's just swipe away garbage. RUclips should move shorts to another platform as Normal Videos and Shorts can't co-exist together and RUclips is gearing up to destroy its own loyal audience base.
Totally agree with you. My shorts videos have anywhere from 2k to 5k views. None has gone viral (into millions). Not making any money yet. So I thought of branching out to long form videos and they come up with this. 😣
Im curious how this works for monetization requirements then? Also, will these still show up in your lives tab as well or the shorts? Its just odd to watch a live with black bar's across sides unless its full screen only like on Instagram?? I go love bi-weekly so this is very interesting!
We’re extremely early to this feature. Feels like when shorts were first introduced. There’s an infinite amount of opportunities and now is the time to take advantage.
This is an awesome feature for a small channel with close to 400 subscribers. I wonder if this feature is available for small channels with less than 500 subscribers?
Thanks for sharing. Do you know if the watch hours you get from upright livestreams count toward your shorts views, or regular (ie. long form content) watchtime?
Great video, thanks! What will it look like when it is over? If it is longer than 60 sec, will it show as a regular RUclips video with the black strips on the sides?
Could this mean we might see the time limit on shorts extend more to like a 3 mins or longer ?? Would be interesting cause I know we could just post vertical as a standard video but I always feel as if I’m letting down the viewers on places like TV’s and PC’s when doing this and just go back to post Part versions of my TikTok’s (eg. part 1, 2, 3) 🙏 Love the content guys !!
Question: 1) can you flip to the back camera to show what you are working on? 2) can you see this simultaneously on the phone and desktop while on Live? It's easier to read comments on the desktop while streaming rather than phone😅
Currently, I’m skeptical about anything shorts related or any feature that is similar to what goes on TikTok. I just wanted to share that I’m super scared to livestream in general. A video about how to get over the fear of live-streaming would be helpful!
I am a travel vlogger,so perhaps this could work for me. Particularly if I am broadcasting from a beautiful location, I may well have to give it a try. Thanks 🙏
If you have passion and desire for it, you will make it. organically. Fingers crossed for all small youtubers trying to get there on your own unique content 👏💪💪

Will this contribute to public watch hours? I'm curious if it will because it's on the shorts shelf, but is technically a livestream.
