Have you considered tempering the double bladed axe? It doesn't need to be, the square-cube law takes care of that, and may actually reduce how well it holds and edge - but depending on the temperature it'll form a semi-transparent oxide layer which can change the colour of the unsharpened/unpolished parts to various shades of straw, brown, and blue. Oh yeah and a nice straw colour can be achieved with nothing but a standard oven - bake for 1 hour at 200 degrees (400f). Combine with actual cooking to minimize energy waste. Allow to cool slowly.

no lighter does not get hot enough and does not burn cleanly enough it will just char everything, just get a propane torch they are not very expensive and very useful. Small butane torch might also work.
Iv'e made a couple of mini axes in the past, i used old spanners, the chrome vanadium is a far better quality steel than a nail, you can also get a sharper edge. I once made a leather bound axe like the ones estwing produce.

It only takes between 1 to two hours to make from start to finish, drilling the holes straight is the hardest part if you dont have a pillar drill.

I just finished mine, I made it out of 1095 and hardened it. I modeled it after a wetterlings scout hatchet, colors and all. :)
