I have a theory: Sometime after the events of the first game, the group was attacked. Maya was killed (notice how Lily paused for a second before saying her name. To me, that heavily implies that at least Maya died) and Lily got separated from the others and later joined up with a different group.
Maya was my first character to die, that's how I learned perma-death was a thing. Ed FUcking died AT THE LAST DAMN STORY MISSION. I took good care of Marcus, he was my main.

They won’t reveal if they lived or died because they can’t do that and stay canon to each gamer’s story. They all could have survived in your play through so you expect to see them in the sequel, but Hypothetical Harry over here lost every single one of these main story characters, a few years later he buys State of Decay 2 and all the characters that died in his game are suddenly alive again? They can’t bring them back for that reason.

They can have the established canon. Sure some characters may have died in some people's play through but they can say Marcus did or didn't make it in the canonical play through.
Think of it this way. Just cause Mario died in bowsers castle number of times. He won’t be there for the next super Mario? Sure he respawns but it’s the almost same thing. Marcus and the other contributed a lot and can still be considered like they didn’t die for the next game
SPOILERS: There's a radio conversation later in the game that has the Kami Baez announcing that Lily has died of an unnamed illness. However, a later announcement then counteracts that claim as it's then revealed that Lily didn't actually die. So, it seems like Kami may not actually be entirely trustworthy (Kami seemingly lying about Lily having died makes me suspect that Kami was lying about Red Talon's forced labor camp and that she may actually be trying to somehow usurp The Network for her own ends).
Hi, coming back to this video in 2021. Obviously there isn't and probably never will be any direct evidence of these characters' fates due to varying gameplays. But my guess from current clues in the Trumbull Valley map in the Homecoming DlC; Marcus, Ed, Maya, Jacob, and Lily are the only survivors. If you revisit the church you'll see photos of Marcus, Jacob, Maya, and surprisingly, Sasquatch. Considering that Sasquatch is still alive, convinces me that the latter three are alive too. Next to the farm base in the middle of Trumbull Valley there is a camp that contains a note reading: "ED WAS HERE". I don't recall that note being in that same camp in the Heartland DLC which tells me that it was placed there fairly recently or at least sometime after Heartland's story.(Heartland takes place a long while after the first game) This implies to me that Ed could have survived too.
I don't understand how Lily's made it when in the very first game, she's stated that she was sick with Lupus I think, Marcus shouldn't be killed off, he was awesome & so were Maya & Ed

I think they won't answer who else survived, if they leave it open every player's playthrough of the first game can be cannon. I hope if we get to meet Lily, she will have put up a statue to Erik Tan.

Take the story of SOD Lifeline remember they bombed or nuke the entire city before they evacuate? That city was the city that Lily, Marcus and the rest of the surviving gang wad headed in SOD1's ending. I think Lily was rescued or stayed behind while Marcus and the rest of the surviving gang go and scout the city. Bad timing though that they died because of the nuke. That is just my theory and speculations.
I don't know why but after hearing Lily on the radio I can just see it ed killed by a hord and Marcus alive with only one arm he lost in a fight with a juggernaut him wearing Eds hat to honor his Fallen Friend and Maya with her hair down not in a bun with a big scare across one of her eyes making her blind out of it she got from a feral her still wearing that iconic yellow leather jacket

It would be great if there was a way to connect your SOD 1 account to your SOD2 account and have those survivors be transferred over somehow. But whether they do this or not SOD2 is an amazing game still. The only thing I would change is making the juggernaut and feral more devastating zombies. In SOD1 I actively avoided them but in SOD2 I actually stop and try to beat them.

I created my own little world in my head sincey Marcus and Ed survived in sod1 that they joined red talon and are fighting to protect the wall in daybreak which is why we don't see them anywhere in the regular campaign maps in sod2

Ik it's too late but you can actually find remnants of the old gang in Trumbull for example Ed leaving notes written "Ed wuz here" I found this note in a camp and also I found a gun like MP5 or Scorpio and our character will question who was the owner and maybe can relate to Maya since Maya is ex army if I'm not mistaken. Old Revolver can relate to Alan I found it in one of the police outpost in my campaign
If you're wondering about that broadcast that has been in the game I have the non updated version of state of decay 2 and I have gotten that broadcast about three times now it's not new info that has been in the game look in all the audio files it's in there.
I think the ones who died where "ed" (marcus friend) and alan (because i think he was the sheriff/ranger) and both had an event where Ed became a zombie and as Marcus you have to kill him (having an unique dialog) and Alan always gets infected and asks for mercy (you take him somewhere else and well...)
And if you get maya killed she's treated like any other npc, but if Marcus dies Lily actually does a little speech about him. And it is treated with so much importance that makes me think that without Marcus a lot of events couldn't happen, yeah even the last fight at the wall. I think the network couldn't make it without him
I actually went to the SOD wikipedia on internet and it says marcus's status is dead.. it reads that after the events of the original sod game he got bitten on the neck by a zombie, then he got overwhelmed by many more and eaten alive.
they should make a spinoff like heartland with lily and at the start of the game, to make sure it was cannon to how you played SOD1 they should have the original characters on the screen and have the player pick which ones lived or died in ur gameplay, for example, click marcus and choose his fate, did he live or die, and depending on which one you pick should tailor your gameplay to who you kept alive and who died

Give us a gameplay with the OG cast, and the original soundtrack. Playing with this soundtrack was actually peaceful, considering it was a zombie plague. They went away from some things in SOD2….should have kept these things the same.

There are people who may not have died from the story events however the only character the Dev's said with certainty that could die and therefore could for sure survive to the sequel is Lily.
May Son Chose to influence Quinten not to talk about Becca's past. She lives though out the whole playthrough after that choice, so Becca did not die my game.
I love state of decay 2 and the groups u can create but I would have preferred maya,Marcus,becca,the people from the courthouse who u can recruit,lily etc

The base that was trying to create the cure... They actually didn’t make it.... As the ending foreshadowed the base to be overrun by the dead.
