DETERMINATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT OF THE REACTION BY THE DISTRIBUTION METHOD
In the extraction of a solute (the solute being dissolved) from a solvent in water, using an immiscible solvent, the extraction will not achieve a hundred percent efficiency due to the distribution of the solute, which does not dissolve in water, between the layers of the two solvents. The extent of distribution of the solute depends on its solubility in each solvent and the amount of solute distributed in both solvents. This constant proportion of solute distribution at a specific temperature is called the distribution coefficient or partition coefficient (Kd).
