TITRATION BY pH MEASUREMENT
OBJECTIVES
1. To draw titration curves
2. To determine the weak acid dissociation constant (Ka)
THEORY
Titration by pH measurement involves the titration between an acid and a base by measuring the pH or the concentration of H3O+ ions of the solution. The pH undergoes rapid changes until a certain point, known as the equivalence point, where the reaction between the acid and base is complete. At this point, there is a significant change in pH. In the experimental measurement of pH changes, two types of electrodes are used together:
1. Indicator electrode: This electrode monitors the changes in the concentration of H3O+ ions as its electrical potential varies with...

CONDUCTANCE OF ELECTROLYTES OBJECTIVES 1. To study the conductance of electrolyte solution 2. To determine dissociation constant (Ka) of acetic acid solution THEORY when an electrolyte such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride etc. is dissolved in a solvent like water, the electrolyte is completely dissociated to give its constituent ions (namely cations and anions). When an electric field is...

MOLECULAR WEIGHT DETERMINATION OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE VIA DILUTE-SOLUTION VISCOMETRY OBJECTIVES 1. To determine the liquid viscosity using Oswald viscometer 2. To determine the molecular weight of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) THEORY Solutions of a high-molecular-weight polymer, even at low concentrations, can flow only slowly. Addition of a small amount of the polymer to the fluid can make it viscou...

DETERMINATION OF RATE AND ORDER OF REACTION BETWEEN ACETONE AND IODINE OBJECTIVE To determine the rate and order of reaction between acetone and iodine THEORY The rate of a reaction is expressed as the change in concentrations of the reactants or products with time. The units of reaction rates are usually M/s or M/min.

DETERMINATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANT OF THE REACTION BY THE DISTRIBUTION METHOD In the extraction of a solute (the solute being dissolved) from a solvent in water, using an immiscible solvent, the extraction will not achieve a hundred percent efficiency due to the distribution of the solute, which does not dissolve in water, between the layers of the two solvents. The extent of distributio...

DETERMINATION OF THE CRITICAL SOLUTION TEMPERATURE OF PHENOL-WATER SYSTEM The simplest of the two-component phase diagrams are those for liquid systems which may break up into two liquid phases. Such systems are usually treated at some constant pressure, usually atmospheric high enough so that no vapour can occur at equilibrium with the liquid phases and over a range of temperatures high enough...
