Layne's arrangements tend to push Geoff to test his limits more than Geoff does in his own arrangements. They've been friends for many years now, and personally I think Layne knows just how far Geoff can go, and knows how to push Geoff to show those abilities to everyone else. While this arrangement didn't push Geoff to either new highs or new lows, it did make him sing as a character he apparently really didn't want to, and showed off some of his acting talent that we often don't get a chance to see. The closest I can think of to this video in terms of Geoff's acting is Oogie Boogie's Song - which was another Layne arrangement, and in that one he asked Geoff for a final low note that takes everyone by surprise!

Definitely do hoist the colors next! That's one of my top favourites from them
Layne is really good at stretching Geoff's range. They do that in the little mermaid. He has a big slide down during ine of his parts. Like, he belts, and then slides aallllll the way doen his range. Id you want to hear more of his big range jumps.

Tony Wakim is a former member of Voiceplay. (Eli does the voice though.) Tony and Layne own Pattycake Productions, where they do "The Villains Lair" and other Disney related videos. So Voiceplay and Geoff get to use their connections, and use their sets and props and stuff.

You are only the second reactor I watched who commented on the bell tones. It’s the first thing I noticed, reminding me of Notre Dame. You’re also the second reactor that noticed Geoff’s arpeggios when J is singing.
Because I am a patron I get to listen to the karaoke track which has really helped me appreciate a lot of the things that I don’t normally pick up on. When I watched this the first time I noticed that Eli, Cesar and J were chanting something when the Guard was being interrogated. I checked the karaoke track and they are chanting “gyp-sy es-caped”. The attention to detail is astounding.
If you watch again, and I hope you will, watch Geoff when he is singing “the fire within my skin”. He’s staring at his hands as if he is wondering what is happening to him.
In the beginning, when Geoff is singing in that lighter tone, you can see the torment on his face. Then Layne comes in with “burn it”. And he descends into madness. 🔥🔥🔥
I absolutely hated this movie. Frollo is so awful, and he’s so believable. Other villains are more fantasy villains. But that instant of torment makes him almost human and makes this song a lot easier to appreciate.
VoicePlay has a playlist of their Halloween tunes, including four from Nightmare before Christmas. Geoff just released Jack’s Lament which makes five from the movie and his fourth Halloween offering.

I didn't catch Cesar's air guitar till my 3rd watch, lol. That's one reason I love VoicePlay so much; I'm always discovering something I missed before. Their arrangements are so interesting, even after several watches/listens. ❤

Love that Geoff Castellucci is the lead for this and he also released his cover of JACKS LAMENT from The Nightmare Before Christmas for Halloween. So, so good. The guard was past member Tony Wakim, but Eli did the voiceover.

Hoist the Colours is a good choice. But my favorite is one Layne arranged last year about this time: Hall of the Mountain King. No words, but Layne tells his story through setting, costuming and the arrangement itself. Watch as the music (and even their voices) change as things are added to the cauldron and it is tasted!
A great insite into Laynes imagination, which can be a wondrous and scary place!

Patrons have been suggesting Cry Little Sister too. This one is in their ACA Top 10 Disney Villains Medley along with the ones they've already done from it "Friends on the Other Side", "Oogie Boogie Song" , Ursula's Poor Unfortunate Souls in their "Little Mermaid Medley" and "Cruella de Vil" and people have been asking for "Hellfire" for years... Great reaction/analysis.

Thank you Juliette, that was great. Their theatrical talents are beyond any A Cappella group....love them all, but VP brings it every time. Geoff just released "Jack's Lament" from the Nightmare before Christmas and he, his wife and their team went All In on this production for his Halloween release this year. Should have a look at that one Juliette. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

This was just a masterpiece and I’m so glad you recognized that!! Of course I think everything they do is just spectacular. They have a lot of Halloween songs to dig into this time of year. Some suggestions below.
    Oogie Boogie’s Song
    Hide and Seek Ding Dong
In the Hall of the Mountain King
    This is Halloween
But Hoist the Colours would still be great for this season because they are in full costume! As they are in a lot of their videos. One more reason to enjoy them so much! ❤

And for this one since it’s the one year anniversary of his channel starting, he invited Angie Woolard (who is a big chord geek) to co-analyze. A lot of it went over my head, but I learned so much. • @chlistens7742
    @chlistens7742 10 месяцев назад +6

on there newer stuff there patron listing at the end... they play a section of the karaoke version without tha main singer.. lets you get a few more technicals of the background
Voiceplay has probably 10-20 Halloween songs.. and Geoff has at least 5 on his own channel ...
you might want to try last years Halloween voiceplay hide and seek. with Lauren Paley (the stairwell siren)
Another group you may want to try has released 3 of 4 (4th releasing today) of there the bass gang vol 3 . it is 4 bass singers.. 3 of them got to meet each other for the first time the 4th was not able to get a visa so they had to replan all 4 of the videos for Marwan being separate. . the bass gang also did Hide and seek with Lauren Paley last year... completely different styles and you can see huge differences in the styles
Halloween and acapella go together there are more than 100 acapella Halloween songs out there

Layne's arrangement here was magnificent! I loved that he kept the Latin lyrics and the maybe Gregorian feeling interspersed with the poppy beats.
Voiceplay is just the best!! Geoff did NOT want to do this, even though Halloween is his favorite holiday. I think that the prideful sinfulness that turned to pure evil made him a character Geoff did not want to sing.
Great reaction! I am always here for Voiceplay and Geoff!

    • @DravenGal

I remember at one time reading her he said he would never do it. But lame did such a magnificent arrangement, I don’t think he had a choice.
I can understand his feelings. While the song is beautiful and powerful, Frollo is such a twisted individual.

  • @jonadabtheunsightly

Tony used to sing with VoicePlay and is in a fair number of their early videos, the best of which is Phantom of the Opera. These days he mostly does off-camera work, principally with Pattycake Productions, which incidentally is where VoicePlay films about half of their videos (including this one).
Yeah, the only one they've done that's more "the Geoff show" than this, is Oogie Boogie's Song. Most of their work passes the lead around quite a bit more.

Great reactions! Someone more dialed in than I am pointed out that you very seldom hear these folks take an audible breath (and any of them can sustain for subjective hours😁). So that when you hear J.None breathing before he sings "Help me Maria", it emphasizes that he is a desperate man begging... (subscribed)

    • @YourOnlineSingingCoach
      @YourOnlineSingingCoach  10 месяцев назад

That’s a good point! On recordings there is always the possibility they’ve ducked down the breathing because it’s noisy (i do this all the time with my recordings)but I agree with you that if they kept that one loud, that was deliberate 👍

The last couple lines where Geoff is belting "she will burn" and then drops way down for the final line, @Peter Barber said that's.... God, 3 octaves + a minor 3rd? I don't speak music very fluently, but I know that dropping down through 3 octaves in as many words is downright ridiculous. 😂 Geoff has a 5 octave range.
