  • @CynicalTesuji

    VoicePlay does all their own video production. Sometimes Pattycake's sets are utilized, but any effects or editing is going to be Geoff, Layne or Eli. They also do all the work conceptualizing and creating the set designs, and those guys do all the breakbreaking work of setting up and breaking down. Eli does their lighting work (and he's very, very good at the craft), as well as contributing more recently to the arrangement side of things, which was work that had previously been shared by Geoff and Layne. The final mix (going to Ed Boyer, as any respectable a cappella group does) and any extensive makeup/prosthetics are the main thing VoicePlay subs out, other than incidental steadycam work. (Layne does camera work when he can, but it's impossible to take the shot and also be in the shot.) These guys are the ultimate DIY group, and when you stop and think about all the skills they have to have mastered to do what they're doing... it's kind of mind boggling how talented they are.

    • @AceofBadeReacts
      @AceofBadeReacts  6 месяцев назад +5

      Oh ok. So sometimes they utilize Pattycake Productions, but not always. Since they've been at this since 1997 it makes sense that they can do a lot of their own stuff. It's impressive nonetheless

    • @CynicalTesuji
      @CynicalTesuji 6 месяцев назад +4

      @@AceofBadeReacts It really is. And using Pattycake is practically VoicePlay anyway, as it co-owned by Layne and Tony Wakim (former VoicePlay baritone, seen in their earliest videos on RUclips). So it all amounts to pretty much the same thing.

    Geoff always said he would never do this song, as he didn't want to play this character, but Layne came up with this arranegment which persuaded him to do it. Layne, on the left, is the beatboxer/vocal percussionist, but is also a singer, and arranger. Everything before the final mix (settings, costumes, filming, editing, etc) is done by whoever arranged the song. That is usually Layne or Geoff, sometimes Eli Eli always does the lighing, for Geoff's channel too. They are their own production company.

    Each singer represents Frollo's internal dialog.
    The person who had the brief cameo was Toni Wakim, Layne's partner in Pattycake Productions, and he was also an early member of Voiceplay.

    VP has the widest genre range of all the a capella groups - and they can do theatrical as well as more serious productions - but their arrangements and vocals are awesome. This one was arranged by Layne (the beatboxer) - you guys should select a genre and choose a song - they NEVER disappoint! They are wonderful humans, completely independent and it is a wonderful rabbit hole to go down... 🌹🕊 #hellfire

    This was Disney's darkest song. VoicePlay made it something spectacular. J.None is now in the navy's Sea Chanters, singing bass. VoicePlay always bring emotion to a song, they bring all the feels. Frollo in the movie is a judge and wears black clerical looking robes. VP have gone with a modern twist on this. Geoff does some eye effects in Jack's Lament. Also in his Headless Horseman he did some.

    I highly suggest y'all listen to 'Nothing Else Matter' by Metallica, 'Hoist the Colors' from Pirates of the Caribbean, 'Valhalla Calling' from one of the Viking games (don't know which one) & the prequel to Valhalla 'My Mother Told Me', and 'Oogie Boogie' from Nightmare Before Christmas. With some of their older members I would listen to 'Queen in 5 Minutes' and "Boy Bands'. They have also covered 'Dream On' from Aerosmith, 'Carry On My Wayward Son' from Kansas(?Boston?). Geoff also has a solo channel where he does some really fabulous low-bass covers. Geoff has a range of 5 or 6 octaves, it's amazing. I think they haven't filled J.None's seat because they are holding out for him to rejoin them when his time with the Navy is up.

    Thoroughly enjoyed your companion with her obvious delight. Feel free to bring her back anytime. Little Mermaid would do just because. Creep (Radiohead), In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins), I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt). Eli is usually the CGI/green screen/etc. guy. The guy that walked in was Tony Wakim (Eli did the voice) who was VoicePlay's baritone until he really wanted to be on the production side of things. He and Layne bought a studio (Pattycake Productions and most of VoicePlay and Geoff solos are done there. The studio is in a mall and the shorts/minis are usually done in the open area of the mall. One of their latest started life as a short but Layne was having so much fun with The Lion Sleeps Tonight that he turned it into a full length video but still in the short format. Lots of critters CGI'd in this one. VP did We Don't Talk About Bruno (Encanto) - another that blew me away. Where has this been all my life? And then there is more.....

    Geoff Castellucci has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. Clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies.
    Voiceplay does everything themselves as they are independent. Except intricate makeup, cameras and audio mixing.
    Geoff and Layne usually do the arrangements with Eli doing a few here and there.... Eleanor Rigby, Creep, Black Hole Sun.
    Layne arranged this one. He did the CGI on Geoff's eyes.
    In Geoff's videos he and his wife Kathy do everything except intricate makeup, sometimes camera depending on the video and location and audio mixing.

    "Hellfire" is certainly one of the darkest villain songs that Disney ever had in a "children's" movie - probably because the subject matter is so realistic, not kind of out-there like a lot of Disney villain song have to be because of the movie theme.

    Geoff Castellucci has been recognized as one of the lowest human voices on record. Although in this video, some of the low notes are coming from Layne Stein and not Geoff. The person informing Frollo of Esmerelda's escape is Tony Wakim, a former member of Voice Play who has, in the past, shown up in cameos after leaving the group (most famously when he played the Grinch -- in full costume and makeup -- in Voice Play's cover of "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch".)

    If you go watch Geoff Castelluci's cover of "Jack's Lament" from "Nightmare Before Christmas, " he uses that "Hellfire" effect for his eyes in that video as well. The difference, of course, is that Geoff put pumpkins in his eyes instead of fire because "Jack." I assume he either asked Layne how to do that effect or just asked Layne to do it for him since he actually used PattyCake's facilities to shoot and edit that video and Layne was already helping him with the production anyway.
    Also, if you guys think Geoff produces the lowest note from a human, you should check out Tim Foust of Home Free. He can produce a note almost a full note lower than Geoff when he really tries. Tim has a slightly larger range than Geoff. Geoff's range is insane, but Tim's range is inhuman. I mean Tim can go from "Misty Mountains Cold" from "The Hobbit" to covering Frankie Valli. FRANKIE VALLI! What kind of Bass Singer can accurately cover Frankie Valli?! Tim Foust, that's who. Then again, we also have Geoff Castelluci replicating Jack Black's Metal Scream from "Peaches," so... Yeah they're both "Gods Among Men."

    • @AceofBadeReacts
      @AceofBadeReacts  5 месяцев назад

      I did check out Jack's Lament back in October, I had just forgotten they used any effects. I just remember the makeup and costume they used. I have checked out quite a bit of Home Free on here as well. I still think Geoff is lower, but Tim definitely has extremely low notes. I feel like he doesn't get to shine as much as Geoff does and maybe that's it?

    • @ForeverDegenerate
      @ForeverDegenerate 5 месяцев назад

      @@AceofBadeReacts In Home Free's stuff? No Tim definitely doesn't get to shine as much as Geoff does in VoicePlay's stuff. Especially in Home Free's earlier stuff. Of course when Geoff himself arranges, like, half of VoicePlay's music, you damn right he's gonna showcase himself. 😝
      If you haven't checked it out yet, you really should check out "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" by Peter Hollens featuring Tim Foust (it'll be on Peter's channel). The last note Tim hits causes his camera to visibly vibrate. In fact, Tim has been known to blow out speakers and audio systems when he goes as low as he can go. It's why he hesitates whenever live audiences beg him to go deep on stage because he did that once and then they longer had speakers. I would imagine this fact also causes Tim to, intentionally, not drop as low as he can actually go because he doesn't want to destroy their and his equipment. Trust me when I say, factually, Tim Foust has a half to full octave greater ranger than Geoff Castelluci. And that's saying a lot given Geoff's inhuman vocal range. Like I said, neither of them are human.
