Just for clarity: Frollo was not in love with Esmeralda. He was obsessed with her in a very evil way. The lyrics spell it out, “Choose me or your pyre.” Translation: Choose me or I’ll kill you. That’s not love. 🙂

@@TouchyReactions thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play. While Geoff has said in the past his favorite character to play is the villain he really didn't want to do this song because of the evil character in it. Layne made him do it. Please do a reaction video to Geoff's solo cover Folsom Prison Blues. He rented an entire decommissioned prison to make this video. His wife Kathy was his only crew. There is a story behind the #'s on his shirts & it was all Kathy's idea. Yes Geoff really does play the harmonica. As with all Geoff's & Voice Plays videos never end the video until after the credits stop rolling. Sometimes after a brief pause / blackout they add something extra to sing or important to the song to show & tell.

Yes, Frollo was evil. He was not a typical over-the-top Disney villain--he was all too believable, a corrupt and violent man who tried to blame anyone other than himself for his own sins and crimes. His faith was a facade he used to further his ambitions and his prayers were empty. I don't blame Geoff for not wanting to play his role.

Their Patreons kept requesting they or Geoff do this song. However Geoff kept telling everyone no because he hated the darkness of Frollo. Considered one of the most darkest of all Disney villains.
But Layne finally talked Geoff into doing this to get everyone to stop asking and get it over with.
And Layne did a phenomenal job arranging this.
Being an independent group has its perks 😊.
J None is a former member that left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy choir. He comes back as often as he can to sing with them. He is definitely a fan favorite. And were hoping he rejoins when he is finished in a couple years.
Cesar joined to replace J None. So when J is there, there are 3 baritones in the group. Layne, J None and Cesar. Eli is tenor and Geoff of course is bass but can sing tenor.

Everyone forgets Layne does more than beats. He is a PHENOMENAL Bari-Bass.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 6 месяцев назад +3

Layne does kind of have a gap from upper baritone to mid bass, where he uses fry (like when he said the line "Burn It!"; that was using vocal fry), but he is so good at using extended techniques outside of his actual voice type (his vocal Fach), he is very good at covering parts the average person couldn't. In reality, I would put Layne's natural vocal Fach as lyric baritone (a lighter baritone riding the line between baritone and tenor). Add in his throat bass techniques, he is an absolute vocal master. Well, they all are, in reality; all of them step outside their natural vocal classifications. Geoff is the odd one here; he rides a rare line from not quite being a basso to being deeper and louder than a traditional bass, while still being in chest voice higher than 99% of tenors.

@@johndeeregreen4592 Geoff and Tim both said the highs somehow, weirdly come from training the lows and the lows from training the highs.

    • @johndeeregreen4592

@@Iansco1, on their upper range, there is some truth to this. The compression techniques both use help with mixed and head voice. I have been a basso profundo singer for over 30 years and always prided myself on the ability to be in chest voice from E1 to A4.. In the type of singing I did, you didn't worry about getting into head voice, whatsoever. Studying Tim and Geoff, I stepped way outside that, started learning about using head voice and falsetto more. My upper range now extends to C#6 over the past 5 years of studying them. Any bass singer who wants to extend their upper range, they need to study Tim and Geoff. I now do things with my voice I never thought possible.

Geoff did not want to play this dark character but this was Layne's project and said Your it! The other 3 are each portraying one side of Minister Frollo. J None is asking/begging for protection from Maria, Eli is dark, destroy Esmerelda, Cesar is blaming God. The fellow that comes in part way through is Tony Wakim who used to be VPs baritone (Eli is voicing that part) until he and Layne opened Pattycake Productions where a lot of Geoff's and VoicePlay's videos are done. I found this stunning, evil, mesmerizing and utterly unforgettable.

If you put the closed captions on you can see the latin phrases. They are part of the Catholic litany. I wouldn't call Frollo' feelings a falling in love. This is lust, pure and simple, and burning down a city surly has to be seen as evil.

But seriously - I understand that Geoff really had to be talked into doing this song. He really wasn't very comfortable portraying this character - but he did a marvelous job!
And speaking of Cesar - did you catch his "air guitar" to the sounds of his vocals (heavily processed) in the middle of the song?

Make no mistake. Frollo is one of the worst villains in the Disney Universe. He blames Esmeralda and God for his lustful thoughts, takes no responsibility, and is willing to burn a woman at the stake if he can't have her or lose his lust for her. Plus, he murdered Quasimodo's mother, and was going to kill him, had the Archdeacon not chided him for killing the mother. He's so bad, in fact, that Geoff didn't want to do this part...but Voiceplay's version of this is the best I've ever heard. Peter Hollens, another great A Cappella artist, does a great cover of this, and an awesome version of "Be Prepared" from "The Lion King."

I've actually been to Notre Dame in France, 40 years ago and climbed and climbed AND CLIMBED the belltower, so I've always found the story fascinating, though I prefer The Phantom of The Opera. @@TouchyReactions Of THOND? These days, who knows! Too bad Geoff is too young to play Frollo, though, he probably wouldn't anyway. There's already a POTO movie with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. They're not Michael Crawford and Sarah Bright man, but it's a good movie. Geared more towards a youth fan base. And for any POTO fan, I must recommend the book "Phantom," by Susan Kay. It's the story if the Phantom, Eric, told from differing viewpoints, starting with his mother. It's my second favorite book of all time, and I am a voracious reader!

i can't help but grin at that "burn it!" from Layne! I love this cover from voiceplay but i think my absolute favourite cover of hell fire must be Tomi P's cover of, he is a bass singer who has an insane range and its showcased extremely well in his solo work (Bass singer who can do whistle notes... its worth observing XD). He is part of a couple of vocal groups, including the bass gang which is him and 3 other basses, Bobby Bass, Marwan Ayman and Peter Barber who are all excellent in their own right(Bobby has a thing for sea shanties, there was a collab between both of his 2 groups where they did "Santiana" with both The Wellermen and The Bass Gang, Marwan did a cover of "this is halloween" fully acapella going into 30 different styles which is just phenomenal and Peter is another youtube reactor who is also an opera singer, I like recomending his cover of "enemy"

Bro, Frollo wasnt a good man. The whole point here is that he's a lascivious prick who uses religion to justify his stranglehold on control. He has lusty thoughts and needs to assuage his cognitive dissonance by attributing his sin to Esmerelda. I still liked your video and I support your love of this performance.
