So interesting. I flew out of Lukla in 1982, and still remember that thrilling take off. Lukla was very small back then. So it was amazing to see the difference. In 1982, we hiked all the way up to Lukla from the road, then onto Everest basecamp. It was a trip of a lifetime for sure.
In 1982 I hiked 10 days in from Lamasungu after the bus ride from Kathmandu, but decided to fly out of Lukla to get back to Kathmandu. Had enough hiking after another two week trek to Kala Patar and Base Camp. The runway was an unpaved yak pasture. They sounded an alarm as the plane approached and the herders drove the yaks off the runway. Often times the ground was too muddy from melted snow or rain to land or take off. The airport was sometimes closed for days or even weeks. Trekkers had to hike out during these times. It took about 10 days or so of difficult hiking to get to Kathmandu, but if you had a flight out of the country on a certain date, you had no choice.
I was in India on business at the end of Oct ‘17 and looking for an interesting adventure. After seeing this video several times, I traveled to Kathmandu where I hopped on a tiny plane and flew to Lukla. Took a helicopter flight up by Everest, spent a night in Lukla, then flew back to Kathmandu the next day. Great video - really captures the essence of the place! And luckily I avoided the men’s room, even though I had my own roll in my backpack. As Ryan says at the end - “I love you Nepal”...
I had no idea you've done this trip!! Its my #1 bucket list. I have a patients daughter who takes her students there every year and so we've been talking almost daily about Napal.
I skipped flying into Lukla and hiked from Jiri my last time there in 2015. I'll be doing the same this October. Those planes and that air strip scare me to death.
Hi Ryan, just have to say, you accomplished really something cool with this channel. I came across it by a chance, as I'm watching a lot of videos on the Cho La Pass recently, as we start our track in couple of weeks. Have to say one thing - the whole series of your trek are the best videos on Nepal Trekking I've seen! Thanks for those! Keeping fingers crossed you'll get your travel TV show finally.
Hi there! First of all, you are gonna love your trek in Nepal, it's so beautiful. Second, thank for watching my videos, it really makes me happy to know that people enjoy them. Stay tuned for more and have fun in Nepal!
Thank you for all these videos - It made me want to go to Nepal so bad. The LonelyPlanet and TrailBlazer books are now on my bedside table - Planning my solo trek for november 2017, either the 3 passes, or the annapurna trek. Can't wait to see more content from your channel !
Great! You are gonna LOVE Nepal, I've done Annapurna too, it's pretty awesome. Here's some vids from that trek, ruclips.net/p/PL11ABDFAC51C1E172 Let me know if you have any questions.
I watched them too (I kinda watched your entire channel last weekend) I can't really decide yet - The "new" road in the Annapurna is what makes me lean more towards the 3 passes, but at the same time I know there are loads of trekkers in november doing the Everest Base Camp and the 3 passes. Unless there is another cool trek that can be done solo, with tea houses, and good signs.
@Ryan: No-one in Nepal apparently. In that respect Nepal and its people are like in India, except in the mountains. The other side of Everest (Tibet) is completely different though - much stricter about Everest permits, safety, guides etc. .... and hygeine too. Lukla is geographically spectacular though, and the flight to Kathmandu was too.
I’ve flown in and out of lulka in September 2017 for Everest base camp and it has to be one of the best airports I’ve ever flown. Best than any roller coaster ride I’ve been on!
I took at least three showers on my trek to and from Everest base camp. Mostly freezing cold water, and one in a shower cubicle with an open side facing across the valley. A shower with a real view. Some places have showers with solar heaters, but you had better be one of the first two or three users or else it's mountain stream temperature (but still not as cold as the showers in the lodge at the top of Cerro Chirripó in Costa Rica).
I really enjoyed the video. I appreciate being able to experience something as cool as what you did with out actually having gone. I flew to Australia and in Japan the toilet’s looked the same way?. I waited for the airplane bathroom. Keep on living the dream and live it up.
There is NOT a "9000 foot drop-off at the end of the runway". It is more like 2300 feet vertical between the end of the runway and the Dudh Kosi river at the bottom of the valley. I flew out of there in 1971, when the runway was not paved and there was no tower.
They can't even deliver the 80kg package using a car. Give them time.. Also the tourists still enjoys the adventure. It must've smell bad there, but hey look at the mountains! :D
Most of people who goes to Nepal are hardcore hiker or climber and they know what to expect. None hiker expect to get modern restroom along the trail in any country of the world. The rich or lazy kids goes to Maldive or Bahamas or any island country or first world country: They don't come to Nepal.
0:35 "There's a 9,000 foot dropoff at the end of the runway." That can't possibly be true. The airport itself is at an elevation of 9,337', and the lowest elevation in Khumbu Pasanglhamu is 6,200'. I'd believe a 900' dropoff, or maybe even 900m, but that's pushing it.
Vilken film Ryan! Jag blir avundsjuk på ett sådant äventyr. Denna sista film var helt underbar. Har sett denna flygplats tidigare men inte på det här fantastiska vis. Tack Ryan för dessa fina filmer!!!!
That early morning flight I did out of Lukla was really bumpy as you get the first thermals of the day. All par for the course and a really good curry at the end of the day !!
My uncle took me here when I was 16. I remember coming in to land and thinking nope! no way that's where we land! I miss Nepal. Absolutely amazing and beautiful place and people.
I didn’t realize who posted the video so I was surprised when Ryan showed up. LOL. Wow, cool. Wait I just realized I watched this before I knew of Ryan. Whoa! I didn’t realize it was the same person before.
Funny tough he touch the water sink with his bare hands at 1:30 and then at 1:42 he touch his nose... That's how easy to get sick in a country miles far away from home. But hey like he says "Who needs to wash his hands after using the toilette?"
Back in '74 it was just a grassy field and flights were just once a week I think. If I had seen one of those takeoffs beforehand, I would have forgotten my aching knee and WALKED back as most did anyway.

Only bodybuilders should be allowed to mountaineer. I don't want to see non striated glutes climbing. We need a UN resolution about this.

That plane in 0:29 : goma air crashed last week in Lukla.....
I just looked this story up, so sad :(
actually it's the one in 05:36 9N-AKY.
A very accident prone aircraft. In it's defense it does fly into dangerous places. I think I rather fly a Twin otter though.
9N-AFE. 1:25 ruclips.net/video/zvInazNSaxk/видео.html
There has been twin otter crashes but it is not as accident prone as the L-410. Either case though it was Pilot error due to bad conditions.
