Problem is, TES does a better job learning you about the backstory (through books, quests, items, ...), AC only provides you snippets through sidequests (modern times in Brotherhood, Revelations, AC3) and minigames (AC4)

My only real gripe I think with the whole Abstergo story-arc is that I never understood why they simply didn't find those who shared ancestors who actually had the pieces of Eden. It's been a long time since I played through the ACII "trilogy" so maybe I missed that somewhere along the way, but it always seems like they were very focused on reliving the memories of the Assassins, when they knew exactly who it was that had the pieces of Eden. So... why not relive those memories instead?
