Hello, my name is Myles de Bastion. I am the Artistic Director for CymaSpace (www.cymaspace.org), a non-profit that supports access and inclusion for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in arts, media and culture. Since COVID-19 forced venues to shut down, I have focused on retraining and upskilling to pivot my work to digital media, filmmaking and virtual reality technologies.
My creative process promotes communication access for Deaf people and I incorporate sign language and captioning through all my art and storytelling from a Deaf cultural perspective. I find that access is often an after though with new technology, I often have to create it for myself. I am hungry for knowledge and mentorship. I would love to have the ability to build new experiences from Deaf cultural perspective that connects both physical space and digital spaces.
I believe that in the future the Deaf community will fully accept and immerse themselves in virtual worlds but this cannot happen without access and representation. How can we include sign language technology and support Deaf culture in these new worlds?
I have many collaborations with arts and cultural organizations around the Pacific NW but I would love to branch out and work with Disability communities from different States. I 100% believe in including and representing Deaf and intersectional disabled. BIPOC. LGBTQ+ and Deaf+ community members. Thank you for watching my video and hope to meet with you soon.
