I attempted suicide just over 3 months ago. Taken by police to Goodmayes psychiatric hospital in London and since then have started rebuilding my life (I'm in my 40s). This is one of only two songs I've found that have allowed me to release my emotions, step back and reevaluate. Music has so much power if you open your heart to it. Thank you Sam.

Utter heartbreak. My brother took his own life some time ago for fear that his being gay would damn him to hell, he was 25. In my experience, the fragile and vulnerable ones are the most beautiful. Loneliness is such a terrible thing. If you have a friend who seems to be missing in action lately, you go seek him out and tell him how much you love him. You make him your number one project because someday he may return the favor. The video is hard to watch, it is so profound. This is so truly music from the heart and I thank you for it.

@agirl cameron I'm from Boro and it has the highest rate of male suicide currently in the UK. 2 more bodies just been found in the Tees. I find we're almost becoming numb to seeing the headlines now. Men need to find another path pronto and keep strong because I cant see life getting any easier with how the world is going. #brothers

@@mickyoutdoors7128 you can look up the suicide rates at the office of national statistics. At first you might think that the numbers sound a bit low (90 in the North East last year) but if you look at the table that looks at the rate per 100,000 you can see that region has the highest average of suicide (13 per 100,000). The council with the second most suicide in England and Wales is Redcarr and Cleveland in the North East, just behind Ceredigion / Ceredigion in Wales.

Since this song and video are about male mental health, the stigma and the double standard that says men can't be fragile or suffering therefore, they must not show their fragility and/or sensibility (for example, crying) I've analysed the video if someone's confused about the things happening here.
Here are represented very poignantly the phases of the suffering with several details throughout the video; the ropes (which is a blatant symbol of someone committing suicide), the guy with a plastic bag on his head trying to suffocate himself (VERY BLATANT) and the others watching him and doing absolutely nothing about (this says a lot about the lack of empathy towards the ones who are suffering and doing nothing to help them). Then we find a sort of cathartic moment where the guys let themselves go into a liberatory scream which symbolises men should be free to display emotions as much as women do, and they shouldn't be labelled with derogatory remarks if they cry or are going through trying times and they're searching for help.
*_Double standards suck and it's okay not to feel okay. Everyone should be free to display their emotions however they want to and not to repress themselves._*
Thank you, Sam, for your point of view about two important topics from different perspectives (Greasy Spoon and Dead Boys).

It's weird how as far as we have come on many social issues, there are still people who box themselves and others into behavioral codes of conduct that are neither healthy or needed. I read today about withdrawal syndrome, and how many teen boys who are not in strong social groups experience bullying, and are increasingly suffering from this. Very often they never really recover. Why are people so mean to each other? Seriously?

    • @TylerDevineScott
      @TylerDevineScott 6 лет назад +33

Another thing I thought of (could be wrong idk) when they were all jumping about and being "free" they were still confined to a small room surround by only other men representing about men can't or don't show emotion to others I guess. And despite being free in that moment they will always be sort of in a box that the emotions can't really escape??

    • @acidrazor
      @acidrazor 6 лет назад +14

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. When you reach out and start telling your story, it is difficult to find anyone who could truly comprehend what you are going through. Most of the time it is best staying quiet. Withdrawing, you save those around you so they can continue being happy. You either conquer your inner demons or be conquered....alone. Probably not in line with what you would like to hear, but it is my reality, and I suspect millions more as well.

    • @valaeeria
      @valaeeria 6 лет назад +3

the cellulon triptometer I don't know. I experienced being bullied from sixth to eighth grade and it was awful. It left me a bit of insecurity. Ten years later and this still bugs me, just the thought of it. But I overcame it.
People can be truly knobs sometimes. I know what you mean. No one should be mistreated. No one deserves being put in a corner, left alone, ignored and sometimes even beaten up (in my case). I really don't know what drives people acting like this.

    Lyrics
    The anniversaries are short lived
But they come back around at break neck speed
    My world spins so fast
The centrifugal force keep me stuck in the middle
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain
    Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain
    Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
We all tussle with the black dog
Some out loud and some in silent
    Everybody 'round here just drinks
    That's our culture
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain
    Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain
    Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain
    Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
    We close our eyes
    Learn our pain

I´ve been to a mental hospital for 2 month because of depression. I love the message. The world isn't aware of the metal health crisis and what it brings for the future. Life gets faster everyday, we are stuck on our phones, real social aspects are getting pushed to the background. This is so strong that I had to make a cover of the song on my channel. I can relate to this song. I'm 47 year old artist tortured by my past, my present and future. I've been sick most of my life and I feel tired, and numb. I don't expect pity, because there are many people out there worse off than me. I say respect one another, because we all carry our burdens and some can't find the light in their lives.

Everyone has something to offer. Your words may give someone enough insight and hope to save themselves! Everybody needs somebody who cares. We are social creatures and the isolation of social media and the discouragement of males to express themselves only makes matters worse. Please find a friend or family member you can trust and let them know how you feel. Just expressing yourself and having someone validate your feelings is a tremendous release of stress and alleviates depression. Finally, get a full nights sleep (7-8 hours) every night, (sleep deprivation leads to and exacerbates depression). Avoid alcohol, (its a depressant). Exercise regularly (at least 3 days a week), Exercise is well known to decrease depression. Practice stress management, learning to control your stress levels helps you cope with life's trials and tribulations. Learn to meditate, it will help you to control your mind... RULE YOUR MIND... OR YOUR MIND WILL RULE YOU!!!

Heard this first at Boardmasters festival, had a tear in my eye there and I have one again now.
'Nobody could explain' puts it so perfectly; we don't know how we got to this reality and we equally don't know how to deal with it.
As a generation and as a gender especially we can't express or cope with our emotions, and I think this song displays it so poignantly how lost we are as a society in managing it. I'm struggling, and have been struggling for some years, as I enter adulthood (22) to express how I feel adequately enough to enable others to help. 'nobody can explain' how we undo the decades of implicit miseducation about what is 'acceptable' for men to think and what is an 'acceptable' way to behave.
From one Sam to another, thank you for presenting this frustration and confusion so well.

    • @charlyannekirby

It's so hard growing up but it gets better. I'm 42 and whilst I am a woman I sympathise so much with your plight. I think it has got harder for young men. I blame the fact that less socialising goes on between men and more are using the internet. This isolates people. Try to do as much as possible that involves group activities that are fun and uplifting. Avoid drink and drugs, or at least reduce to a minimum. Music, art, poetry are still the greatest and cathartic routes to take. My own brother took his life when he was 30. I wish every day he was still here. He did not want to get help for a coke addiction. He felt trapped in a bad relationship, but he loved his two sons so much. Get help and be the one who fights to help those who are weaker. We are all this together.

Sara Ferguson this talks about male mental health, the stigma and the double standard that says men can't be fragile or suffering therefore they must not show their fragility and/or sensibility (for example crying). This leads other people making fun or mocking them for their condition and the person who suffers taking his life. The video represents very poignantly the phases with several details throughout the video; the burning rope (which is a blatant sign of someone committing suicide), the guy with a plastic bag on his head trying to suffocate himself and the others watching him and doing absolutely nothing about (this says a lot about the lack of empathy towards the ones who are suffering and doing nothing to help them). A painfully beautiful song. To all the young men - your life is precious and all too brief without shortening it.

I heard this song on BBC radio 1 yesterday and absolutely loved it! It's so powerful and emotional and sums up Britian in 2018!! The crescendo of the guitar melody and drums is awesome! My brother Rene, sadly took his own life in 2008, aged just 30. It hurt so much that he didn't get the help he needed. The system is broken and we are all fighting to survive everyday. My own writing and music is an attempt to try a nail a message on the wall. We Live! We are Here! We must fight for them!!!

The last scene with all the boys standing against a wall of "decorated wall hero" paintings and then the main focus goes on the guy in the center of the screen and his background is just an empty white canvas... There was a lot of thought put in this video - much more than you can appreciate if you only watch it once.

This is one of my favourite songs from the first album.
My half brother died last week. This song came on in the car as I was driving back from my sister's the day I found out. It will now always remind me of him any time I hear it.

Sam Fender is the best new artist to emerge in this country for a long, long time. This Geordie boy's music speaks to and for every working class person north of Birmingham in Britain. Songs we can relate to. Songs that tackle difficult social issues with the rawness of the working class.
Sam is probably the best British music act to emerge since Oasis. I urge everyone to download his songs or buy his CDs.

This song still give me goosebumps. Every time I listen to this song my throat just tightens up as you could feel the emotion of this song pouring out from each line. Each line gets more intense and it just gets you. You are definitely a talented musician Sam. You definitely brought light about mental illness in men and that they are often victims of stereotyping. Men should not be judged or frowned upon if they are showing vulnerability or emotions just because they are guys. They have feelings too and it is okay for everyone to show their emotions.
