“The robot” is one of the world’s most recognizable novelty dances. Its distinctive popping and locking motions are simple enough concepts in themselves but the origins of the robot are little less straightforward. The word robot was first used in the 1921 play Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti (Rossum’s Universal Robots). There was a time the dance wasn’t set to music and it was part of a mime. Robert Shields included this robot mime his routine in the late 60s. This novelty act caught the eye of Charles Washington, many other performers, including the Jackson 5. From there, the robot solidified its mechanical but flexible movements in dancing history.

I see Michael Jackson, I click. But also personally, I think Michael Jackson had the spark in the robot dance. All the other Jacksons just walked but Michael Jackson actually had his own little piece of him being a full on robot dancing across the stage and I don't like the fact they didn't give him a spotlight in the video. Just my opinion please no hate
No that’s not true the Jacksons as a whole group first did the robot together in the japan tour in early 1973 with the song papa was a rolling stone and you see all of the brothers doing to robot perfect, and even though mike is my favorite he not my favorite because of his skill he’s my favorite because of his personality and how he treated people but they didn’t give him back the same love he gave them
THE JACKSON 5!!!!!!!!!!
AND MICHAEL JACKSON WAS IN IT!

So once again thanks to that black kid from Gary, Indiana, dance rocketed to the next level.
Gang
yessir, the 14yo genius
No not really. He did his own small part but it was around before him. It's still done the way it was done originally. Street dancers started putting a twist to it. It would be like Normani taking credit for the split.
Amen!
@@KBdotHAQ I wrote this 6 years ago, since then I've learned otherwise, but still, he did contribute to making these dances more known in his own way. Luckily he never took credit for it.
I'm old enough to remember when Michael first did the robot on TV......Decades later, The Moonwalk. In each dance, Michael added his own style and the rest is history.
..She's a Dancing Machine ;)
MichaelJackson oh my okay 😂
I remember when the Jackson 5 did it in 74'...i was a little kid in those days, and all the kids on my block LOVED IT! thanks for the memories!
*HERE FOR MJ*
You managed to cut right before Michael Jackson breaks out into his amazing solo in every single clip of Dancing Machine. In fact, you're missing a tonne of amazing robot performances across history. Bad editing.
They didn't even focus on the robot.. with MJ ...
As a popper, thank you for shining a light on the history of our art. For those who are interested in a bit of further research, look up The Electric Boogaloos (Popin' Pete, Boogaloo Sam etc.) and the origin of waving and liquid.
bro narrowing down the research to Poppin pete and Boogaloo sam is not a research. They should look up bay area boogaloo and strutters and G stylers
Im glad Richard Shields was mentioned. Sam Solomon (Boogaloo Sam) created popping as we know it, and the electric boogaloos which took elements of the robot dance from a novelty act to its own dedicated style of dancing. Michael Jackson featured members of the Electric Boogaloos in Captain E-O, Beat It and Thriller music videos
I knew it all started with MJ!
The video says the opposite, lol. MJ learned his robot style from the Lockers. MJ and the 5 of course made it super popular and more wide spread.
Mike actually did the robot for the first time in 1973 the Japan tour with the song papa was a rolling stone
I'm here bc I saw The Jacksons on the thumbnail 🙃
The Robot DANCE was around in 1969. It was first done by Charles "Robot" Washington. It came along BEFORE popping.
That arm isolation move was used in Bring It On, when they were doing a hilariously bad routine. It also had "spirit fingers."
This came out great thanks for using my clip and nice arm isolation aka cheezy robot dance move at the end!
+El Tiro :)
+El Tiro I love you.
Belfers love you too :)
I had try to do it when those handsome hard hitting Jacksons did it on every show and they also did it on thier Vegas show. it's very keen when you do it so flexible. I slightly do it once I pop my hop bone then I slow down and break slow down and break just for a sit down routine.
last time i came this early i became a dad

+George Costanza Thank you very much-o.
Damn, thanking dancers for letting you guys use their video's and then following that up with saying that watching them is a waste of time is pretty harsh.
+qWERM did you not hear all that self-aware irony in his voice?
Thanks for using one of my clips to help educate people about "the robot" dance!
+RobotRyRy great to see you in this video too RyRy :) We need to collab!
+El Tiro For sure!
Charles the robot/drunk man washington plain and simple...tell the whole story.give that brother his props..you soul train people know whats up
40,000 views and only 20 dislikes, you have a great video format.
great job.
As a child of the seventies, we always called the swinging arm move "the breakdown", because the robot was breaking down!
Hard hitting journalism right here, Vox! lol j/k

How many tried robo dance After watching this video...
Thumbs up...
The Jackson's in the thumbnail 😍
that's what I thought too
With Vox I learn something new everyday.
Vox: opened up with mimes inventing the robot
Me: Damn this white journalism!
Vox: mentioned Soul Train instead of instantly giving the Jackson 5 credit AND cited street dancers as important contributors
Me: that's the Vox I know and love
+Tatiana ^_~ lmao rare instance of a white idea being appropriated by black folks XD
+Limey Lassen yup! you learn something new everyday.. although to be fair white people did end up appropriating it back again :side eye: turning the robot into a "dad dance" but it's all cool. It's the American way: stealing things from smaller subcultures until you strip away all original meaning :)
I bet you love Tumblr
Not just the robot, but a lot of popping moves were inspired the mimes. I used to have a video by Popin' Pete from the electric boogaloos. He was saying how the group used to study Marcel Marceau's movements (a french mime performer) to develop some of their popping moves.
Limey Lassen stfu.
Pop-n-taco said he used to watch Robert Shields & Mercel Marceau (the french mantomime) for inspiration. Robert Shields started his robot in 1968, and he was student of Mercel Marceau. Popin pete also said in an interview, he & his brother used to go to libarly to watch Mercel Marceau videos for ideas, when they were starting out.
If anyone's wondering about the brass tri-hop soundtrack, it's LAL from Odjbox
That's a very complete answer to a question I have never asked myself. I like that.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm loving the channel more and more
Thank you for giving the J5 the credit
wow! that was me with El tiro at the 0:05 !! big ups bro!!
Chadd Smith is the best!!
Had a loud giggle upon the mention of "uncles at weddings"
thanks lockers, rerun, young Toni Basil,a nd j5,for making my whole world move ssssssmmmmmm.
I'm here bc i saw Michael
This is incorrect. Could you edit the video to state that it was Michael Jackson who popularised and refined the dance? The dance that you show The Jackson 5 performing in the video came *AFTER* a solo routine that Michael did alone as the front-man of the group. Why did you edit that portion of the routine out to make it seem that the group danced collectively?? There are videos of Michael dancing alone all over RUclips in 1974, it was the highlight of the performance during their tours and TV appearances, yet you decide to ignore it and therefore take credit away from Michael, which is becoming more the case as time passes after his death. *Don't* revise history.
d c
Thank you!! Well said! Gees, get it right!!
Jackson stole it from Robert Shields. Nothing Jacskon did was original.... nothing.
MJ was taught by Poppers and the moonwalk he did is the reverse of the original moonwalk which is forward not backwards
@@zachhisback3825
The Moonwalk is gliding in circles; the BACKSLIDE, commonly misnomered as the Moonwalk, is a reverse glide that has the illusion of attempting to walk forward yet going backwards.
I didn't understand the news, Vox.I understood the moves.
YES i was hoping for a Madd Chadd feature... and there he is right in the intro
Nice!
I completely suck at this dance, but have always found the interpretations fascinating.
Thanks for bringing the J5 ❤️
Nice AED sound snips in the vid: "stand clear", "analysing now"
Splendid video...well documented.
You are the best
Ohhh they showed the other Soul Train Charles Washigton from "Capt.Crunch n Funky Bunch."
The first Robot was Charles Washigton from Chicago he was the original robot for lockers 1970-71 he had a group in 1967 called " The Robot Bros." Not to be confused with 1977-78 Robot bros. on the Gong Show. But yeah he appeared with Lockers on Carol Burnette show Aug 1973!!! My dude "Mad Chadd" is the best now!!!!
My teacher want to do this for homeschooling
You forgot the 1968 movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" the music box scene... Not to mention Marcel Marceau..
Damn he invented this too?
The first link of the youtuber doesn't exist
+FalknerKnight Sorry about that - it's fixed, and he's here: ruclips.net/user/brambilabong

+El Tiro what's up I was going to say that
Interesting video
Gotta love Vox.
*Great Video!*
Those early dancers look really cool.
Dope video you should check out our group technicianz .
I like the ending plug. To paraphrase, "here are links to the people who let us use their footage for free! Check it out. It's a waste of time." Haha. Just the use of the word "waste" there bothered me I don't know
Well, as someone who has been a part of street dancing and involved in the culture of it for around 20 years, I have to admit, I was enjoying this video for the most part until Michael Jackson, or specifically The Jackson 5 was given undeserved credit for making this style of dance mainstream. You guys were correct about it's origins in Mime. However, to leave Charles Washington out of this history lesson is borderline insulting. And to casually mention Shields and Yarnell, without giving them the true credit they deserve is more than borderline. In the world of non dancers, Michael Jackson is idolized for his dancing that he never gave credit to his teachers or inspirations for publicly. His level of technique, from the 70's and 80's until his last time performing, was 99% unoriginal, and specifically his use of robotic techniques, foundations, and movement was all incredibly watered down. People that aren't well trained or knowledgeable in the history of street dance styles are the ones who give him any credit or praise, while the majority of us who are trained and knowledgeable find him to be basic, unoriginal, and honestly just not great. With that being said, his fanbase was incredibly huge and so because if his theft and unoriginality in dance, street dancing styles like popping, locking, robotting, and bboying were brought to a more mainstream audience.
But since this video is specific to Robotting... Charles Washington is an unmentioned pioneer. Robert Shields and Yarnell are primarily responsible for popularizing robotic movement in the homes of America because of his performances. Soul Train (including many of the dancers that were mentioned along with at least a dozen that were NOT mentioned but deserve as much if not more credit than most that were) is what brought the "Dancing Robot" into the homes of America. The Jackson 5, is not the reason for it's original.or current popularity in any way. And then of course... It's always nice when a channel with a following of this magnitude actually gives credit to the artists it used footage of, but then to essentially negate that credit and say that enjoying their entertainment is "a good way to Waste a few hours" essentially shows that you don't care about any of them and only mentioned anyone by name to avoid the possibility of a copyright infringement suit against you.
I hope people watch this and regardless of the missed and incorrect information, decide to click the links and watch. And then click a related video link and keep watching. I'm happy to see anyone become interested in this dance style and culture! There are thousands of people worldwide that currently do these styles you describe and mention. A lot of them make a living from it, and deserve the support and respect of more than "wasted hours"...
And, no mention of the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? 1968. The singing robotic mannequin? Better technique and skill level of roboting than some of the current dancers that were mentioned lol
ok ok, estou aqui no brasil neste momento lendo isso e pesquisando sobre a historia do robot dancing in the soul
Vox, can you please make a video on why lots of people put sewing tools and materials in Danish butter cookie tins?
Thanks for not butchering the history and doing your homework!
Speaking of robots,
Can you guys explain the origins of techno music?
Maybe include some artists that influenced it to make it what it is today
Could a kid not be an expert o.O
I thought that move at the end was called The Scarecrow
Ironically the narrator sounds like a robot.
Mj
no this is wrong information
Cool
Why "The Electric Boogaloos" is not here?? Why dont speak about Popping dance and the BIG world influence off the Electric Boogaloos? and the film Breakin and Breakin 2. Anyway is a good Start.
The robot dance: The dance that people who don't know how to dance, dance too
+Meerkat Robot is a style extensively used alongside Popping, which is a dance style. Ignorant and arrogant people who can't do any dance style say shit like this.
People should check out the Japanese group "World order". They've got some nice robotic choreography.
There's a good bit of post- production issues on this one guys.
*sees 70s me* clicks *after vid* did you not just show my robot dance *is triggered inside*
Jackson 5 aka Michel Jacksons group when he was young!! sad he died :( how old will he be this year?(if he was alive)

@@taj4326 … 62... thankyou for telling me! that's really cool! he would be 62! nice!

How you mention the J5 who literally did 4 robot steps, but didn't mention Michael Jackson who the performance centered on with a ground breaking, must see take on the dance that propelled the song to no. 1.... 🤔?
At that point, you lost credibility and I through everything else you stated out the window.
