While the Grohl family had always been musical, Virginia never expected her son to become a musician, let alone a rock star. But as Virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Were they as surprised as she was about their children's fame? Did they worry about their children's livelihood and wellbeing in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers? Did they encourage their children's passions despite the odds against success, or attempt to dissuade them from their grandiose dreams? Do they remind their kids to pack a warm coat when they go on tour?
Virginia decided to seek out other rock star mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey in which she interviewed such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dre's mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REM's mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother; Patsy Noah, Adam Levine's mother; Donna Haim, mother of the Haim sisters; and Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother.
In this conversation, Virginia and Dave reminisce about Dave’s childhood, their first mother/son tour with the Foo Fighters, Virginia’s musical past in a 1950s girl group, and what it was like to meet Dr. Dre’s mom.

Rest in peace, sweet Virginia. You were an amazing woman and a rock star all on your own.
Dave Grohl is, in my opinion, the best Public Relations/Front Man in the world, ever. From bringing young fans from the audience up on stage before massive crowds to play guitar with the band, and then signing one of his guitars and giving it to them, to making a documentary about a dive recording studio where some of the most iconic music recordings ever recorded, and then buying the Neve console and moving it to his house, to bringing his mom on tour with the Foo Fighters.
And now this heartwarming video from an international book tour for the book his mom wrote where she interviews the mothers of music stars from many genres.
Genius.
How lucky these two are to have each other. When you have a great mom like that, the universe is possible.
I always thought I wanted to be Dave Grohl's friend. Now I want to be his mom's friend.
I love how much she delights him.
This was one of the most fun evenings I've ever had. Both Dave and Mrs. Grohl are the most down-to-earth, genuine and funny people I've ever had the pleasure of listening to -- their storytelling skills are bar none. There was no pretense and you could clearly see where Dave gets his work ethic, his values, his sense of family and certainly his sense of humor. They are wonderful together -- you can see and feel the love between them. I'll cherish this hour with them for a very long time!!! I would dare say not much will happen to top the time that I spent with these two very special people! Thank you to Strand for hosting this event. I'm obviously a huge Foo Fighters fan and this just added to the love I feel for the band, their families and their fans!!!
kjwwolf2011 And how do we become best friends??? 😂 From one Foo fan to another.....SO COMPLETELY JEALOUS, but SO appreciate your sharing your experience!!! Love that you have first hand, up close and personal proof that Dave is as AMAZING as they say.... but, we already knew that!! There is no doubt in my mind that Virginia, is equally amazing!! I hope she gives herself props everyday for all she instilled in Dave, making him the man he is today!!!! Love it!!!
You know you're a Foo Fighters Fan when....You are the same age as Dave, but burst into tears like a teenager when you see them in concert!! Proud of it!😎
How sweet of you. It truly was an awesome evening; much more so than I ever could have imagined. I'm still buzzing from the experience and I have more than enough videos/pictures to look back upon should I ever forget a single second of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you very much for your kind words.
Have always loved the relationship they have. Now it's April 6th 2022. 😥 Still in shock. I'm glad he has such a supportive mother he really need now. And wife & children. So sorry for Taylor's wife, kids, family , longtime band family, millions of fans. And all musicians across the globe. 😥✌
She's lovely and why David is as sweet as he is.
I loved this. I found myself laughing & crying throughout this whole video. Virginia Grohl is awesome. Its clear that the "Apple didn't fall far from the tree"!
Now in my 50s I wish that I could have such a great family relationship. If you do, never take it for granted.
Amen, my friend, Amen.
This should have A LOT more views! Dave is the fucking man.
My best friend was at this. The pictures she took of them were lovely. Such a great insight into the parents and their lives. Absolutely adore Dave and his mum.
My face is hurting from all the smiling I did throughout this.
This was an amazing experience. I was there and could have listened to them for at least another hour or two. They are great storytellers.
Gotta love David Grohl ❤️. Thank you to his Mom for doing such a great job raising him. She's awesome too. 💝
such a lovely, sweet woman, and she raised a great kid :)
God I wish she had come on a show when I was twelve and every year after that.God I must read this book ,
What a mum - she is the best! It's no surprise that Dave has turned out to be the most down to earth bloke around! Dave is a lucky guy.
Daves So lucky to have one of the good ones. Moms.
I love when he puts the mic in his mom's face and everyone laughs. Lol
What an amazing Mom!!!
What a great interview, what a beautiful relationship Dave and Virginia have. I’ve been fortunate enough to have read both of their books. They both have a gift for sharing. Virgina mentioned about how our school system doesn’t work well with these talented up and coming musicians, really it isn’t working for many individuals. Sadly, caring, hard working teachers and staff have unrealistic restrictions with such limited resources.
Thanks for sharing!! KTK
and it's 4 o clock in the morning again, dave has ruined my sleep for another night!
What an awesome mom?!,,,(No offense to my own, kick-ass mother...:)thanks, guys. .. --It is..."nice when things are nice". xox
Omg, me too🤣🤣
I could have watched another hour of that!!
Love this so much My parents for years were my roadies, my mom even ran my sound. Thank you so much for sharing your stories ❤❤❤
I've loved Dave for many years, seen him live 3 times, and now I love his mum too. Fantastic video, extremely funny as well. Better go and buy the book now then...
How inspiring on so many levels.
I was so inspired by this, thankyou, thankyou. I am the single mother of a creative aspiring to make it in the music industry (@Acer Spade) and also another child who found his passion very early in life (racing cars). Dave and Mrs Grohl have; in such a fun way; imparted, what seems to be the shared experience of the parent of a creative. Amazing the similarities that run through so many creatives journeys. It is a mine field fraught with raised eyebrows from others on your decisions as parent on supporting your children to become the best version of themselves. This is validating. In awe from Oz
I believe the Michael Stipe song she mentioned at 16:02 is “Untitled”, from REM’s “Green”:
"This world is big and so-awake
I stayed up late to hear your voice
This light is here to keep you warm
This song is here to keep you strong
I made a list of things to say
But all I really want to say
All I really want to say is
Hold her and keep him strong
While I'm away from here
Hold her and keep her strong
While I'm away from here
I've seen the world and so-awake
And stay up late to hear me sing
Just hold her
I've seen the world and so-awake
And stay up late to hear me sing
Just hold him
Hold her and keep her strong
While I'm away from here
Hold him and keep him strong
While I'm away from here"
I love this playlist. Thank you for putting it all together in one place so I'm not constantly searching.
These two are delightful. Just what I needed today :) And RUclips needs a Love button.
Thank you, so much, for sharing this! Absolutely love it!
Rest In Peace Virginia ❤️
Just saw this.
I will gladly vote for either of y'all❣❣❣
Love this!!! Wonderful story
What a sweet lady. He must miss her terribly.
This is really beautiful to have such a relationship with your mother, it seems she was really great person, it must be really hard loosing a mom which was a also a great support and friend
I love Dave Grohl !!!
My mother was a teacher for decades. And it drove her to curses , how badly bright or gifted children were treated by the school boards she worked for. She ended up as a teacher for bright and gifted kids for the last few years of her LONG career, because she HAD to. She FOUGHT for those kids! A lot of the brightest kids ended up as drop outs, because they just couldn't cope with the too rigid structure that the curriculum demanded. The over all catering to the "average', with NO room for the struggling, or advanced. These kids have lives of endless frustration, unless they can find a teacher ir school system that allows them to FLY.
My son is a musician and I can completely relate, ty!
Oh wow! The Three Bells were amazing! Beautiful harmonies! My mom listened…so I remember it fondly!
Wonderful video!!!
Delightful interview, long live the Grohls.

💛💛💛💛💛
It doesn't matter how old you are or how famous you get, guys love to hear their mama's talk about them and tell happy stories and memories lol. Just look at Dave's face when his mother is talking about him. My sons do the same thing. They love hearing me talk about silly childhood memories😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
what a fun and interesting video
35:08 If anyone's wondering, the Quality Inn Breeze Manor is still there, so you can add it to your next Foo Fighters nostalgia road trip. :)
How lovely I wish I had that relationship with my family sad X
Awesome! Moms will be moms.
The Cinderella Rocadella song was a big hit in the 60s by a French husband and wife duo.
super filmik, kocham słuchać jego historie
Virginia should definitely write a Foo Fighters song!!! It would be a killer hit!!!!!
It is so bloody typical. They pull the money from the Arts EVERY time EVERY where, and there are so many young people who, like Dave, don't "fit' into the 'norm', so what do they do? Thankfully there are great teachers out there who will never give up on speaking out against this to local governments. But, geez, it needs to change. Artistic Creativity is tome of he most important qualities humans have. The ability to inspire others through an idea, a song, through their art.
Great interview Dave and Virginia Grohl, Thank you a thousand times.
Ok im not only a Dave Grohl fan, but also a Mama Grohl fan now as well!
Gold
That 2nd song she sang was a campaign song for Nelson Rockefeller.
Great, fantastic, amazing woman and mother. Without her I have to wonder where he would be. He probably does too.
🙏
OMG Breezewood is like an hour from me.
Hi to every mom which is still alive. I know my mom is proud of me even though she is Not longer among us. I dont care couse i know everything is happening at the same time. Succes and fame doesnt mean anything. At last we are all im the same spot

@@allymayful they are from Israel. Live in Germany since the 70's.
@@user-fy9wj2pc8b Thanks.
I'm always interested in how they share their fame money and take care of their families but no one speaks of that.
cool
I really wish my parent would have been more supportive when it came to music when I was a kid.
But no, it was "go get a job in some shitty factory and live a life you'll hate!"
Never too late!
He was my acid dealer
NICE FURNITURE STORE PLUG-PLUG!!
My daughter went to Europe and went through exactly what his Mum did every time she entered a country, and in France it was when she was leaving and it was really nasty how they treated her. My daughter has pale blue eyes and curly hair and the prettiest little thing. She wondered if there was a terrorist out there that looked just like her. To get out of Framce she had to get a friend who was waiting for her in England to sort them out.????
Not as much swearing as usual
:D
No chewing gum, young man….
Just saw this.
I will gladly vote for either of y'all❣❣❣
