Virginia Hanlon Grohl with Dave Grohl, "From Cradle To Stage"

  • The first time Virginia Grohl saw her son Dave perform in front of screaming fans, she knew he was destined to be a rock star, and she was right. As Dave rose to the top of the charts, Virginia started to wonder about other musicians’ mothers. She wanted to know if they were surprised by their children’s fame, if they enjoyed it, if they nagged their superstar sons and daughters about what to bring on the road. In From Cradle to Stage, she answers those questions, writing from interviews with the mothers of musicians including Dr. Dre, Michael Stipe, Amy Winehouse, and more-plus her own family photographs and stories about raising a legend.
Virginia Grohl is a longtime educator and writer. She is also the mother of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana). Dave Grohl is a 15-time Grammy-winning musician and 2-time Emmy-winning director.

I love the little things he did to show love and respect. He opened her water bottle for her first before opening his own. That’s someone who was raised right.

Now I know where Dave got his storytelling abilities. Virginia’s passion for fostering young musicians shines through in every story she shared. What an amazing woman.

Watching this after Dave lost his Mum. She made him what he is because she trusted him and let him go forge his own path and that is the best gift a mother can give a child. What a woman 😊

Virginia deserves her raw, she has raised such a beautiful hearted and extremely talented son in Dave. A big thank you to her for encouraging Dave to share his gift with the world

Not everyone has an awesome mother who encourages, I am sure Dave knows how lucky he is. Mine only discouraged and the best thing I ever did was go no contact. God only knows what I could have done had I just had a little encouragement. How awesome Virginia is, this is so beautiful to watch. Love this, buying the book.

I mean this in an entirely positive way: This was the most genuinely punk-rock, DIY thing that Dave Grohl has done in a long time. Much respect to him for respecting his mother's work for what it is and using his time and power to give it the access it deserved.
I'm a hobbyist musician and a good chunk of their discussion about the dynamic between a mother and a creative child rang true for me and made me so much more thankful that my mom is the type of person who spends $20+ on the EPs that I release for "name your price" on Bandcamp.

I am a total fan of Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters. I have been trying to get a story to them for 20 yrs. Their music literally saved my life in a hospital. I hope with all my heart I can tell it sometime.

Poor thing just has that paper shaking, calm those nerves you did a great intro. I love Dave so much, been a fan since nirvana, foo fighters is life as far as I'm concerned. Seeing his mom in interviews, I just love her too. She's so much like my mom, an educator, and I love playing and singing music, like Virginia my mom knew school wasn't going to be the same for me as other kids, she let me drop out to get into an alternative school that would get me a diploma sooner, paid a bundle for it too, she knew I just needed to get out of school, but also knew the importance of a diploma. I might not have Dave Grohl's money but I feel as successful. I have a good job, I own my house it was paid off by the time I was 34, have a great spouse, all in all everything went the way it should have. I also love that she did this book, its an amazing idea.

I just love Virginia Grohl. She has been so supportive of Dave from such an early age and I truly believe that her support is what helped Dave get to where he is today. When Dave wanted to drop out of high school, she didn't flip out or try to force him to continue his education. She KNEW that the classroom was not where he thrived and was not what was best for him. She knew that her son had a much bigger destiny that didn't require algebra, history, or science. She is also the one who encouraged him to join Nirvana when he wasn't sure what to do because he didn't want to leave his friends from his old band behind, but she told him that he needed to do what was best for him and to go for it and she even sent him the money to be able to fly to Seattle to meet Nirvana. Because of her constant love, support, and encouragement throughout all of these years, Dave has turned into an incredible human being. He is kind, humble, and amazingly talented. He is just a GOOD guy. I respect and admire the relationship that Dave has with his mother.

I love everything about this. The obvious adoration he has for his mom. How sweet his mom was. The fact that they’re from the DC area (at least for most of Dave’s life). I’m also someone who was born elsewhere, but have lived in the DC area for 15 years. I’m raising my daughter here. It’s not the most glamorous place, but it has its charms and I really do like it here. Also, Politics & Prose is awesome!! Love it there.
Also, I’m a creative person (a musician) for whom school worked only because I also enjoyed school. But school by and large did not serve my creative pursuits, beyond classical music. My rock music passion had no place in school, apparently. Now I have a 6 year old who loves nothing more than singing, dancing, and performing. She’s in a school that does support some creative pursuits, which I’m so happy for. However, it’s a private school, and it makes me sad that most kids won’t have that luxury.

I have a child similar and school is even more restrictive, super bright child in music maths and physics but school is wrecking ( to the point where a osych had to sign off and I found another school that had about 20 guitars lying around the upstairs as they recognised some kids are just different and to go out diverse minds. Neuroscientist Iain McGilchrist covers what happens in the brain ( right hemisphere). Jill Bolte Taylor too. The self direction aspect with music is so interesting but I think it’s taught wrong for the right brain dominant kids, they have to be able to self direct and possibly have mentorship to help feed in a little theory ( which is innate in them due to being right Brain dominant and sending ‘whole’ in patterns and relationship which all the arts are)

They definitely need to change the curriculum at school. Lets face it. We spend over half the day on subjects that don’t apply to our lives out of school. And if it’s uninteresting it doesn’t stick in our brains. Of course I believe California has curriculum designed for students interests
