By the time the show was wrapping, he may have made it known that he was accepting offers. Then again, if you are at a car specific show and you sell one, you might look like a ringer. However, at the very least, I'm sure he was quietly approached to sell it and probably the offers were very low. Why? Because, even at a Beretta show, they might love them, but they're not stupid. The car probably wasn't even worth what the guy paid him for it.

I belong to a group on FB that loves classic (malaise) GM FWD. The plugs on the rear bank of the 3.1/2.8 is easily accessed by taking the huge aluminum fixture for the alternator off. Three bolts, don't even disconnect the alternator( just the negative battery terminal) and flip the whole thing on to the plenum. Big tunnel back there if you do this.

The berettas were double zinc galvanized from factory so you probably didnt see many rusty ones on the road. The cabin was designed to feel open air with lots of low slung glass. I wanted a Beretta in high school. I had a "poverty spec" Lumina 3.1 coupe (not Euro, no spoiler, no console, etc.) with a split bench and column shift auto about 20 years ago. It's "a Beretta for fat dudes", complete with the fragile B-Pillar door handles and the doors that freeze shut the second the temp hits 32 degrees. This car taught me that I don't enjoy wrenching on engines and suspensions.
But I've always enjoyed car audio. I sat in a boom car when I was 12. I was hooked. Still am: any time I hear bass coming from a car, either up close or off in the distance, I think to myself "they are singing the song of my people"
The lack of console in the Lumina made it an ideal candidate for a "sound quality" installation since there's nothing to obstruct the sound path or cause standing waves. So I built kick panels for it. Custom components with Vifa drivers and a DIY crossover. Alpine 7800 series in the dash, Alpine V12 amp alongside a single Kicker 10 in the trunk.
Assembling the crossover took about an hour, after I spent 3 hours designing it. Kick panels? About three weekends of tweaking the shit out of speaker placement.
But the end result was worth it. I could make the steering wheel bounce up and down with a CD of a pipe organ symphony, and the system was so clean you could hear a flutist take a breath during a solo.
And what did I listen to through it most days? WHERE THE HOOD WHERE THE HOOD WHERE THE HOOD AT. I was basically Michael Bolton from Office Space.
I kinda want another poverty spec Lumina, just so I could do it all over again.
    Yeah, car people are weird.

Had this story in the background thinking it would be about some unrelatable (to me) exotic or classic. Then I heard him mention the Chevrolet Beretta! First car I purchased was a new 1995 Beretta Z26. California car, white with dealer installed limo tint on the rear windows. 3.1 V6 with a nice amount of torque (and torque steer lol), though it quickly ran out of steam up top. The car felt very nimble to me and was a blast to drive. I subsequently got into bigger Chevy's after that car. A 98 Monte Carlo Z34, then later a 96 Impala SS. Somehow I managed to spend 20 years of my life driving mid-late 90's Chevrolets. When it was finally time to move-on from the Impala, I replaced it with...yet another Chevy family car...a Chevy SS Sedan. The funny thing was, when I took the new SS out on the test drive in many ways it reminded my of the kind of fun I had driving the Z26...just with loads more power and finally a decent interior!

We all have our own section of car culture we reside in but I have also discovered that if you step out of your comfort zone and into another part of car culture with an open mind 99.99 percent of the time you'll have an excellent time. For me, it was the B5S4 community. And I still go back to S4RW every year now.

Do any of the older folks such as myself remember the talk back in 1987 that the Chevrolet Beretta was going to be the Camaro replacement?
Also the Mazda based 1988 Ford Probe was supposed to be the Ford Mustang replacement but failed due to public outcry.

You sir win the interwebs for today. This is hands down the only cool story about a beretta ever told. If you did something cool in a Chevy Citation, you would win double honors, that only a car guy could appreciate!

Never did I ever think I would ever see the BerettaFest featured ANYWHERE. Still have my 1996 Beretta Z26 with a five speed swap that I brought to BFest Denver in 2004. Not currently running, but hope to get it to another BFest someday. Ran a 15.3 in the 1/4 with a stock 3100 at the Pueblo strip that year. Had some basement brand 18" tires on it too...

As much as you dislike the Aztec, its styling was far ahead of its day and age, and its functionality was far ahead of a day at age. If it had been built on a more reliable engine and transmission, it would have been fantastic to have been released in the last couple of years. Even today, there's quite a large following of the Aztecs that are left, because they were relatively capable for a small SUV, and they had a lot of features and functions that were really revolutionary for the American Auto Market.

I had a chance to test drive one somewhat recently and they are surprisingly decent driving vehicles. The polarizing styling is what killed them.

    • @ischmidt

The styling was polarizing at the time, but now I see one and it just registers as "late 90s/early 2000s Detroit".
