I was Eddie's pool maintenance man. Over time he gave me 11 guitars and two automobiles.
He was a great guy and good friend to me and my family.
He was a uniquely decent person, rock star or not. He never forgot how to be a good human being. I wish there were more people like him in the biz, and certainly in the world at large. He was my big guitar hero when I started playing at the age of eleven. He still is my big guitar hero. Also a good example of how we should all be as people.
I was a pool guy for over 10 years and this has to be one of the coolest “pool guy stories” I’ve ever heard of! That’s awesome!!!
Prove it
@@4985boo why would I lie about that?
@@4985boo I 100% believe this story because I now work in Hollywood and I’ve already had a super famous person.(no name just A list celebrity) Give me a car.🤣🤣🤣
When Edward died so did my youth. Still hard to believe he's gone. Thanks for sharing.
Right? Eddie, Dio, Lemmy
Rip, but the music and the fans will live on forever
So sorry your image is tied to EVH.
H I HERE YA DUDE.........I SAW THEM 3 TIMES 2 I REMBER ...1 I DONT!!!!!
I quit listening to Van Halen after Fair Warning when they went all pop music.
But those first 4 albums, man, it's hard to top that era of their music.
Yep. I can relate.
got to meet Eddie and the whole band back in the late 70's at Rouges Gallery bar in Va. Beach , ticketron sold us tickets but we were underage so couldn't get in ....so we went around back to figure out what to do ....they pulled up in an old window van and walked up to the back door where we were standing and David L. R. asked us what we were doing ,we explained and he said wait here a minute and went inside ....he returned with a bouncer and instructed him to hold the back door open for us the first set ! Eddie showed us the even then famous guitar and they went in and torn the freaking roof off of that place .....they are genuine good dudes for doing that :)
As a true Van Halen, it was awesome that you guys were able to put this story out. Always saw Ed as a great car guy
As a true Van Halen? Fan?
Joe is a VERY good story teller! Keep him coming back more
DEFINITELY SECOND THAT!
Totally agree, i bet Joe has a ton of great stories to tell.
Thank you..
Yeah, I don’t know. very many good storytellers do you?
Used car salesman tend to be excellent talkers, and BSers😂 I know because my dad was one
Those of us who are still mourning eat this stuff up. Thanks for sharing a great story.
His voice is actually very similar to Eddie Van Halen’s voice, so his impression of Eddie is actually spot on.
Yeah, I noticed that too right away!
What no one figured out was a couple years before he died , Ed started selling his cars and giving away a lot of his guitars . Ed was getting rid of whatever Wolfgang didn't want , I guess .
yes he was fighting cancer for a long time and probably knew his time was coming to an end
A lifetime of even cool shit, gets to be a burden to keep track of and to keep in good shape. Plus it loses the special meaning it used to have to you as the years roll past. Better to give it away to the people you care about who will always treasure it. Or to sell the stuff to people who will love it the way you used to when you first got it.
@@SIXPACFISHThat's way too true. You dont just own things like cars, toys and houses, you are married to them. They need to be sheltered and maintained. Its a full time job, and the more you own, the more it costs. And, a lot of the time these things depreciate in value, and get passed up by newer technology, so, you end up replacing them anyways. It's a vicious cycle, and the only way out is to sell it all, and realize what a waste of resources having 10 cars is. 😂
He snuck that last joke right at the end lol. Well played sir.
😉👍
I love stories where the celebrities I care about are both down to earth, cool, genuine folks AND car-guys!
Incredible story.
I was at Barrett Jackson that year; I met you Joe and you told me the story exactly as described here. (I still have your card somewhere); I have a ton of photos of the cars; even my parents standing next to ‘she’s mad’; ironically I met Michael Anthony there and spent time with him having drinks and talking cars….
Thank you for the kind words, it was a great time
I see Michael there in Scottsdale every year he's a great guy
Yes, the first time we were just standing in line for drinks and he was right behind me so we started talking about cars just a normal nice fun guy extremely down to earth exactly as advertised!
EVH was not only a musical genius but a true car guy. RIP
4:23
That '72 Miura S is the car Eddie is heard revving in the song Panama.
1970
I first saw Van Halen in 1983. Omg it was like fast times at ridgemont high lol
I rode in the same colored Z28 with the TTops out. 😊😊😊😊
Joe is such a good storyteller he actually has current Ed's voice down very well. Like if you close your eyes you could almost think it's actually 2010s Ed. RIP
Agreed. The impression is pretty spot on.
When a man uses “let me tell ya” in his conversations you know that man has seen a thing or two and he knows a thing or two.
Or he's from New Jersey.
And knows a guy who knows a guy 😜
Eddie was known for saying he didn't listen to music. He said he prefered listening to the sounds of the car when he was driving.
I'm the same way.....none of my cars have had anything more than a very basic 'system' and mostly for those l000ng drives or for when parked
Yeah. Someone made a RUclips "short" about Eddie saying he doesn't listen to contemporary music and liked listening to the car instead of music. r. i. p. EVH
Eddie never played Gibson guitars regularly on stage. Fender owns Charvele which were making EVH replicas. Then Eddie started his own EVH brand owned by Fender.
Your absolutely correct, my mistake in the story , it's been 15yrs or so since I've told the story
He did have 2 50’s Les Pauls that he played a bit live, they were replacements for the Shark guitar after he modified the body and ruined the tone of the guitar in the process.
I always thought the Explorer he played in the early days was a Gibson because it looked identical to a Gibson Explorer, but turns out it was an Ibanez Destroyer.
He did play Les Pauls on the early tours as alternate or backup guitars. There are plenty of pictures of them. I'm pretty sure they're the ones he bought from Norm Harris around 79 or 80. But, after those early tours, I don't think he ever used one in concert again. He always favored Gibson. In his recorded interview with Jas Obrecht, as he's playing Frankie to demo new songs, he says how much he wishes he brought his 335 and how much he loves playing it, even going so far as to say that if he ever has a guitar custom-made that it'll be a 335, with his stripe paint job, and a Floyd on it. He was definitely a Gibson fan. It's strange that he wound up with Music Man, Peavey, and Fender for guitars and amps. His iconic instruments were none of those, and his "brown sound" was Marshall. Yet, he never worked with them. Ed was a musical gumbo. Lol
He said the best playing and sounding guitar he ever owned was a Gibson ES-335. The problem was the look. Dave and Al said he looked like Roy Orbison. This was the beginning of putting a Gibson PAF pickup in a Fender body. And his actual #1 guitar at the time they got their recording contract was his Ibanez Destroyer which was a direct copy of the old Gibson Explorer. That Ibanez had the tone he wad after. The Frankenstein was more his #2 guitar at that time, but that soon changed. Of course, when he got a little money after a few years, he bought two 1959 Lee Pauls as an "investment." Those guitars are easily worth 1 million each without the EVH connection. I've never heard what happened to them.
what a memory to have, I remember being a young teen and 1984 came out and watching him on MTV videos when they really didn't have that many videos and they just reran Jump I swear every 20 minutes some days.
Eddie van halen and Cars are my two favorite things
Eddie, cars, and The Cars favorite things; Elliot Easton of The Cars another favorite, great guitarist.
^..^~~
Really cool story... I can't imagine how many stories people have of EVH that worked at the grocery store/gas station etc. Just regular people that had interactions with him because of where they worked.
I worked at a small store on Ventura Blvd and met Eddie in the liquor store next door to where I worked. Valerie was pregnant with Wolf, and she was at the counter buying wine for a party or something. Me and my boss went up and started talking to Ed about his car. He was driving a Lamborghini LM002. He gave us a rundown of the vehicle specs and how he had to put racing fuel in it. Gave us about 10 minutes of his time. Super nice. I've always cherished the memory.
What a great story I graduated from high school in 1981. I saw Van Halen at the Oakland Coliseum candlestick Park, Shoreline amphitheater. Every chance I had if you have to explain they won’t understand rest in peace we miss you.
Rock on!
They play the Oakland Coliseum a number of times. Once they actually played it on Eddie’s birthday. When they played candlestick Park that was for monsters of rock.
I am also class of '81......I saw them the following year at The Forum....amazing show and so impactful for my first fully attended concert.....then again at The Forum for their first tour with Sammy.....and again on the Monsters Of Rock tour in '88 at the LA Coliseum.......it was never enough!
Long live King Edward!
as a huge van halen and by proxy eddie van halen fan i was so exited to see this video pop up i grew up listening to van halen and when i started playing guitar i just loved eddies style of playing and his tequnice he was my hero me and my dad had plans to go see them arround 2019-2020 there was talk of a tour but obviosly covid hit and then i remember it vividly october 6th i was living with my grandparents in idaho going to a trade school at the time and the night before we had talked about van halen and how eddie had quit most addictions and was fairly clean but david may not last so long concidering his past, and then my grandfather came to pick me up from school and take me out on our usual tuesday hang outs when he tells me "that van halen guy we talked about died today" me thinking its david lee roth i open my phone and look it up, olny to be absolutaly broken hearted finding out it was eddie ive never cried so damn hard man olny other time was over a girl, but i can get over a girl, but eddie will always be dead, i wish i could have seen him play just once, guess i just wasnt born in the right generation i mean when i say im a van halen fan ive listend to every album front to back every song every little peice of music i can find of theres i listen to it, if im ever rich enough i will buy his muira, in my opinion theres not a single more culturaly important and saturated car to exist
What about the EVH OBS?
Stay tuned for my next story about that one
I loved that truck with Boyd Coddington. Spent many days in study hall thumbing through Sport Truck magazine and remember that truck well!
I love the EVH amps. Not yet aquatinted with the guitars.
@@RPmotorcars Is it going to be on this same you tube channel.?
one of the few people that got to see what was inside EVH
I can only imagine what's stored on tape inside 5150 Studio.
I'm more of a guitar person than a car person and him saying the "from Gibson to Fender" thing really hurt my brain having studied his collection over the years... but there's way more videos out there about that, not too many about his cars - so thanks!
Yeah I made the brand mistake telling the story, it's been over 15yrs since it happened
EVH started on Gibson guitars and then played Fender (shaped) guitars. I understood perfectly.
Late one Saturday evening me and a couple friends were out cruising around N Hollywood and we stopped by the bank so I could grab some cash. There was a nice Porsche parked in front and a guy a the ATM. Lo and be hold it was Eddie. He took the time to stop and chat with me about his car and made some small talk. He was indeed a cool dude....... RIP
Great video, and great storytelling by Joe! I interviewed Ed back in the late 90s, and he told me that story about the "Shes Mad" license plate. Ed, Michael Anthony, and I talked about our Nomads for about 45 minutes. My first car was a 1957 Nomad. It was great to have something in common enough to talk shop with those guys. Good times...
Thanks for sharing that story. Lou Graham of Foreigner had 3 c ars from his collection auctioned about that time, average cars, nothing super collectable, around 2006 Mecum auction Crystal Lake IL. Lou was there to sign whatever you wanted if you bought one of the cars, but they only got to the mid $20k range. But what you did with the custom guitar with the car was brilliant, just what was needed to get the bidding wars going.
That was such a GREAT story - thank you for sharing!
I will never forget the day when in my buddy's Smokey And The Bandit Trans Am, he pops his new cassette into the Pioneer Super Tuner with Jensen Triaxel 6x9 speakers, and Running With the Devil comes on - oh my gosh it just blew me away! I can remember it like it was yesterday...
Thank you Mr Van Halen for the memories! ❤😊
Great story, I miss Edward Van Halen so much :(
I traded EVH a set of 1962 gibson humbuckers for an echoplex a million years ago. Super weird normal guy
Interesting that the actual guitar used in the Hot For Teacher VH video sold at auction last year $3 million +
Its always great when you have a good time with a celebrity you like.
Love NAMM shows. Remember when they did a concert at Disneyland after close. Asked the guy next to me who he was, just introducing myself. CEO of Yamaha. 😂 response, “cool pianos but can you get me a discount on a bike”
Awesome stories Joe! Huge =VH= fan here, I remember seeing these cars online and loved the matching Guitars that went with them.
Cool! What a great experience!
Thank you for sharing it with us. I miss Eddie, he was one of one.
I thought FOR SURE he was going to say the Fender guy called and let slip that Eddie was in the crowd and bought his cars back. RIP Eddie. I can't imagine the jam sessions going on with you and Jimi Hendrix.
That Jeep makes a great Nomad; seriously I really enjoy these stories!
Is actually another part of another story that involves that jeep that was in a stream of pictures while I was talking about Ed
I’m beyond jealous. Eddie is the fuckin man.
Awesome story 👍 RIP Eddie 🙏

The last line in this story is the funniest thing i've heard all year!! 🤣 Great story!!!
What an amazing story,
Please do more 🙌🏽
Awesome Story! got excited hearing Mr. Petralia share some personal stories about EVH rip. Thanks mucho for this post!
HUP HUP HOLLAND!
Is there another story about Eddie’s Lamborghini Miura being sold after he passed away?
Yes go to the Van Halen News Desk and search for it. I wrote the story and there is a video ❤
Great story and finish!
Super story teller! tHanks VINwiki!
Joe is a Great Story Teller , Great Hearing This About Ed’s Cars , Just Love This Stuff
Great story teller Indeed so great to hear there's good people out there, being from Fresno CA a drummer who's past his prime very Inspiring
Would like to hear how Consolidated got-ahold of Eddie's Lamborghini Miura.....
Great story. Ed is a superhero. So, this story leads me to question this: why did he sell ALL of his cars before and after death? Wouldnt Wolfgang want some of them? Any ideas why? I saw that Alex's kid was trying to sell the red flatbed for a long time. He sold the orange nova. Does Wolf not drive? It's so odd. It's not like Eddie needed the money before death and it's not like Wolfgang would need the money from the cars? Why not keep some of them? Especially the Lamborghini that was used in Panama!!! "Curated" got that car. Makes no sense. And Wolf got the house and 5150. Cars could stay there!
Without being offending. I sat in a Miura once and it was tiny. Wolf is a big guy. Maybe it is uncomfortable to drive and why keep it as garage candy if somebody else can take care, enjoy the car and show it around for people to see. Also prices are so high that maybe it is not enjoyable to drive just because of the value of it
Couldn't tell you I did business with him 08-10' era what he had going then with those cars was what I worked with, he also had a VW Bus in one of the garage stalls but he wasn't selling that at the time, but told me he bought it after the first album came out and would never sell it.
Kid may not have wanted them, probates a betch who knows. Best not to leave a mess behind for others.
I imagine many made a claim to ?? after he went, best to sell it all beforehand.
Great story teller , thanks for sharing 👏👍
Great opportunity and a great story to come out of it!
It makes sense he was into cars. I've heard the story about Sammy Hagar connecting with Eddie through the mechanic who happened to be working on both of their cars at the same time.
Great content and presentation. 🇦🇺 😊 No one tells a story like Vinwiki. 👍
What a story! I miss Eddie! I feel blessed to have gotten to see every VH tour of original Van Halen while he was here. Those were the best time in world history to me.
What a great story, Thanks for sharing!
Wowsa! Great story! Thank you, from Florida, USA.
Ed spent the vast majority of the 80’s playing Kramer’s, specifically the 5150 and 1984. Kramer is now owned by Gibson which is why one might associate Kramer and Gibson. The EVH line of guitars is produced by Fender.
I made an error in the guitar brand while telling the story it's been over 15 years since that whole thing happened and I'm a car guy not a guitar guy so I have to apologize for the brand mistake on my part
@@RPmotorcars no I get it. I was actually trying to support your statement as there’s truth to it depending on the time period you look at it. Fantastic story by the way, absolutely loved it and it’s automatically one of my Vinwiki favorites already.
Thank you for adding the detailed information. It helps clarify a good EVH story.
His story took place in 2010. Eddie had just released the evh line fender is currently doing. Eddie just left peavey and Ernie ball before that. Gibson was not in the picture during eddies time with Kramer. Eddie was never involved with Gibson. Sorry car guy but us guitar geeks know what’s under the hood of our instruments. It’s like saying Eddie was selling his collection of old crappy dodges instead of chevys. Gibsons are crappy old worthless dodges.
@@kbar3612 Never cared for the way they sound....nor the strat either.
bought one when they first went overseas (or so it was said). DIdnt own it long at all.
Awesome story thanks for sharing!
That was great! Joe is a Great Story Teller!
Nice video cool to meet an iconic guitar player and the cars he had .
What an amazing story thanks for sharing it. Ed was such an amazing musician and inspiration to every musician including myself and he is sorely missed.
What a fantastic story, love this
Awesome story !!! Greetings from Argentina.
What an awesome story! Being a total guitar & car nut, i couldn't have clicked on a better article...🤘🤘
Best Vinwiki story ever🤟🤟🤟 Long live VH🤟🤟🤟
3:17 Thats a Nomad? I always complain about these stock images ruining the video, prime example. Vinwiki editor: eh, it's a car, put it in.
That jeep I sold EVH same time he bought the 47 Dodge COE, it's part of another part of this story TBA
There is only one way to tell a story like this, and Joe nailed it! Lol
Thank you it was a pleasure to sit in the chair and tell my Tale
you didn't circle back on the boyd truck 😅
That's a separate story, stay tuned
So what happened with the Coddington truck?
We had it restored and sold it at Barrett Jackson Scottsdale the following year
The kind of story that brings me to check each and very vinwiki post….well done!👍👍
Great story! What ever happened to the Van Hauler? (I still have the Sport Truck magazine from June of 93 with Eddie and the Truck on the cover)
You are one lucky guy. To have got to meet Eddie. 😊 just incredible.
Alex, Eddie, and Wolfie are or were the greatest musicians on earth!!! This vid made me tear up because I love that family so very much. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
IIRC one of the EVH Chevy's sold on Bring a Trailer not long ago.
never mind the bone punchline this was a great story to hear normal life stuff going on with Eddie as a person. standing next to him without even realizing it was him. the matching guitars was an amazing idea who knows what those cars would've sold for without that.
Cool story, it would have been really cool if the year guitars could match the year cars.
So did you get the Boyd’s built obs?? I had a poster of that on my wall as a kid
I sold it for him a yr later after we restored it, but that's another story.. 😉
I painted the subwoofer box with the frakenstein graphics for the truck when the audio got installed... I may or may not have lost traction on moving the truck out of the shop...damn corvette drivetrain🤷♂️🤷♂️
This guy is an amazing storyteller! I hope he's able to tell more stories here on VinWiki!
There will never be another one like him he was a pioneer and an inspiration. I only own guitars with just a bridge pickup because of EVH
Eddie also used Kramer or Charvel guitars .
EVH opened an emergency exit door for me and my mates so we could avoid the door charge at a club once…
Eddie was a cool dude. I’ll always enjoy his playing.
Great video, great story.
His voice reminds me of Johnny Dare, I had to come over from Spotify just to see who was telling the story lol
So how much did the hip sell for?
One of my favorite stories on this channel.
I wonder if Eddie going to Europe was for his early treatments that were on the downlow. Such a bummer.
Love to know what happened to the Boyd OBS truck
There's a story to tell on it, just wait and see...
We will wait, of course. 😊
But please don't keep us all waiting for too long...
Awesome story!!
This was a great story - I enjoyed every second of it. I love cars and I love EVH - what could go wrong?
LOVE Van Halen (not van hagar). One of the CD my mom would play on our biannual road trips was van halen greatest hits. I got to see them in 07 and that was probably the highlight of my young life. The day I turned 28 I went on google and saw he passed, weird how life works
What about the truck behind the building was joe able to score it?
I did yes, and sold it a yr later that's another story coming
What a wholesome story, thanks for sharing. 👍 👌
I FKING LOVE THIS CHANNEL! Thanks again y'all for another great video.
Hope you got plenty of stories outta this guy, he's good 👊
That last comment had me laughing hard
