- Cinematic goddess Raquel Welch sat down with author and fashion commentator Simon Doonan for a Q&A before a screening of cult classic "Myra Breckinridge" (1970) as part of a Film Society of Lincoln Center retrospective of her films. Camp, sexuality, and Mae West were all covered, obviously.

RIP Raquel. Those pink 25 watt bulbs are shining your way up to the heavens!!! I never realized how funny she was. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and now that she has passed will have to continue finding many more. She is a just a joy to listen to and watch.
RIP Raquel. You were a force of nature.
What a doll...got to love this woman....witty, humorous, adorable, and so authentic and expressive!
She is literally flawless ,insane how just amazing she looks.
Tony Turner Most celebrities who have that much treatment STILL don’t look as good as she does. I say: genes.
On the night of the premiere when Raquel Welch showed up there were applause for her. But when Mae West arrived, there was loud cheering and the crowd surged to get a glimpse of her almost causing a near riot. Policeman, both on foot and on horses did everything they could to control the crowd. That's how much of an icon Mae was.
Carrying an eternal torch for one of Hollywood's greatest beauties. Rest 🔥🖤
I had to smile at Raquel's story about visiting the great Mae West in her dotage, and finding the room dimly-lit with pink bulbs. It brought to mind my one and only real world encounter with Raquel, when I booked her for a UK chat show in the mid 1990s.
The negotiations to secure her were protracted, which is unusual when the star is promoting something (in her case her starring role in a West End play). Finally she confirmed the interview. But then a load more headaches began, arranging her all-important lighting for the one-on-one interview.
Raquel insisted on having her own light delivered to the TV studios. I've worked in TV for longer than I care to mention, and worked with umpteen international stars. But in all those years, Raquel Welch is the only one I've ever known to insist on providing her own lighting - and it was extraordinary. When it was debuted and the TV crew first saw its miraculous effects, I totally got it.
Raquel Welch was at the time in her mid-50s and very well-preserved. The lady was stunning, a full-on Hollywood movie star, perfectly made up, be-wigged and beautifully dressed (much as we see here, 20 years on). She really didn't seem to need any help. But when she sat down in front of that magic light, POW! I witnessed a miracle. She was a girl again!
I swear, the glow from this mysterious machine erased 30 years in a flash. That light was nothing short of voo-doo, I'm sure if she could, she'd have taken it with her everywhere she went. No cosmetic surgeon, however skilled, could re-create the same effect.
It's effects were however, most unfortunate for the chat show host, who unlike his famous guest did not bask in its golden glow. He remained under his regular studio lighting, and the contrast was dramatic. He and Raquel were the same age, but he suddenly looked like her terminally ill grandfather! I guess Raquel learned more from Mae West than she was willing to admit in this interview!
Very sad to learn of the great lady's death today, aged 82. She was smart and funny as well as beautiful and charismatic, and fully deserves her star status. Raquel Welch was one of the last of that generation of movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood. Who is left? I can only think of Sophia Loren.
Love Simon Doonan, but how disappointing he couldn't get a rapport going with Raquel, whatever he tried! Mixing her up with Ann-Margert in his opening was as bad a start as it's possible to make, and sadly it was downhill from there. Shame.
@@gsjarvis6669 Raquel Welch most certainly did wear wigs in her 50s - she had to, because she had her own, best-selling range of 'Raquel brand' wigs and hairpieces to promote!
The Raquel Welch wig range was hugely successful for decades, and made her a fortune right up to her death this month aged 82.
@@gsjarvis6669 As I mentioned in my original post, Raquel Welch was wearing a very stylish wig when I met her for the television appearance I described above in 1995 - she was then aged 55.
I know it was a wig, as before I escorted her into the TV studio for her interview I saw it (and her), being professionally tended to in the make-up room!
That she wore wigs during her 50s is also confirmed by the fact her globally successful, signature wig line launched in 1998, when she was 57/58 years old.
I've no idea who you are or why you claim to know more on the subject than I do, but you'd do well to heed the old adage: 'When you've dug yourself a hole, stop digging'!
I believe it was - well remembered!@@hudsony777
Very interesting post glamdolly especially about her own lighting . I take it the interview was on UK tv and is it available on youtube?
@@paacer Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Yes the interview was on UK TV, but it was a long forgotten series that went out in the London region only. Unsurprisingly, it hasn't been uploaded to YT. Shame, I would love to watch it myself!
I can't believe it Raquel has Passed. RIP Raquel Welch.
Raquel speaks with great wit and candor. She looks fantastic, and has made the best of a trying, unique experience. It’s delightful to listen to her.
Raquel was so incredible well spoken, intelligent, light hearted and funny and yet down to earth and mature. This combined with so much beauty, elegance and grace makes her a Very attractive and lovely woman. Bless har heart.
this is the best interviewer they could find in NYC?
Love this! Love Mae West, and Love that Raquel was being honest. Great interview! and great, bad movie!
RIP Raquel. We are going to miss you so much. I'm now imagining her in heaven meeting Mae West in a matching white outfit. Such icons
Except Mae may ultimately end up stealing her white outfit. LOOOOL Watch the interview where Raquel talks about Mae stealing her gown; and apparently some rivalry on the set.
She was a class act !! Her politics were normal, she loved America.
She is just the perfect woman. Stunningly beautiful, grace, class, intelligence.
Raquel is 100% FAAAABULOUS and who in the world looks THIS AMAZING for 70-anything?! Can I get an AMEN??
Raquel is as beautiful as ever here...and still is in 2018. Loved her recollections of Mae and "Myra Breckinridge". She was witty and spoke intelligently. : )
Love the way she is sitting down on that chair.
It is totally not her size and she she just "I sit down and try to make it good"
The chairs fit Mr. Munchkin.....
Did she say she (herself) was over 70 ? Wow, is 70 going to be the new 40:)
I loved that 25 watt, pail, pink bulbs story.
Antonio Kinsey Me too. 😊
She’s absolutely stunning for a 70+ in age. Wow!
Lucky Luke She sucks
She was so wonderful and funny, I kept laughing and laughing. He is flat and depressed and interrupts her.
What a treat this is ... I adore her candor and honesty and could watch her all day long. She undersells herself, because she's rather legendary herself.
Mike I couldn’t agree more
Raquel is in her seventies and still as beautiful as always
I love the seventies Mae West was prettier then her in her 70s
I don't think Mae West was that pretty
+I love the seventies I agree.
I love the seventies what a life she’s had!!
Sorry but Mae was NEVER considered beautiful. Raquel was and still is a gorgeous actress.
Raquel looks radiant as usual. She ages very slowly.
Okay so now the elephant in the room: When is Netflix going to carry THE GOD DAMNNNEEDD MOVIEEESSSS.
Re: The Mae West man rumor. Costumer designer Edith Head dispels this very loudly and clearly, something to the effect of "she was every bit a woman"
Racquel is gorgeous as ever and such a great interviewee. While I've never seen this film I still enjoy her anecdotes.
I stayed with the director Mike Sarne in Malibu when he was editing this movie.
Love her so much.R I.P. ❤❤❤
Well packaged. She is still gorgeous.
She's a great example of what happens when Hispanic genetics are well cared for. It so rarely occurs with weight piling on by their mid 20's. But it doesn't need to be. Just because your mother is the size of your fridge doesn't mean you have to go down that same road of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. And of not being able to run after your children when they're zooming around the park. That last one hopefully will sink in. It usually carries the most weight for mothers. Jennifer Lopez is another great example. Diet and exercise. Pure food and lots of activity. Not fried food and TV.
Raquel's a helluva storyteller!
Stunning! BTW, her wig line is amazing as well.
I love how the interviewer guy got Owned and Controlled by Raquel for mistaking her for someone else and then he lost his courage and didn't ask questions at the beginning.. He had to get his mind unscrambled first!! Lol!!
It was one of the most discussed movies, Raquel Welch made the cover of TIME magazine because of "Myra Breckinridge".
Raquel was a natural beauty and very smart...Always loved her...
Simon was a terrific choice to chat along with Raquel. He seems to dig her and the feeling appears to be mutual. A terrific double act to entertain us. Well, I enjoyed it
RIP Raquel..we'll love u forever!!!
Screen legend Raquel Welch has died at the age of 82. Welch’s family told TMZ she died on the morning of Wednesday, February 15, 2023 after a short illness. Her exact cause of death was not disclosed as of this time Welch rose to fame in the 1960s with TV roles on Bewitched, The Virginian, and McHale’s Navy. Her star rose higher with the 1966 films Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C., and she went on to became a major sex symbol of the decade and beyond.
I know this is 9 yrs ago but goddamn does she ever look fricken amazing.
I love her voice, and .....
Who cares about him. Come on! Raquel is worth every second of this interview! She is amazing and if someone is watching him or picking apart what he has to say you need to move on...This is a great interview because Raquel is being herself and herself is all you need! Legendary!
Olly4Ever I gave you a like but the interviewer was everything. What a personality! We didn’t even need Rachel Welcher or whatever her name was.
It would be nice if they would hv picked a professional interviewer.!!!
As I am about 2/3 through watching this Q & A interview I've come to the conclusion that this is almost as 'campy' as is the film, ''Myra Breckinridge''.
Just an observation.
Raquel Welch: "I'm over 70". Cartoon eyes+"aooogah!!!"
I love Raquel's body now more than ever!
H. W. Johnstoke You can’t have it. Get your own
On revisiting this interview, it's much better than the first time I watched it. I don't think Welch understood the era of Mae West or the type of woman she was. It was different generations. Welch mistakenly took it as a competition thing between the two. While West might have wanted Welch to respect her on a more consistent basis, Welch misunderstood Mae West and took her demeanor the wrong way.
An interesting pub trivia topic is that Raquel appeared in a tiny part in an Elvis film... ...which one? "Roustabout" in 1964. She's one of the hecklers in the early tea house scene. Blink and you'll miss her.
first of all, the interviewer is HORRIBLE, a very poor choice indeed, Raquel Welch is classy, all the way through, I found her comments about West to be funny, not really bitchy at all, it's amazing she was able to hold her composure so well, while being interviewed by this individual.
Greg Rak I totally agree
She, John and rex had extreme respect for miss west. She still does. Raquel might be a icon Now but Mae was one THEN!
@@jamesmonroe7751 Correction: Mae is an icon then AND now
@@jamesmonroe7751 AND now.
They probably didn't want a straight guy who would have drooled all over her. But this guy was too weak. Raquel is hard to interview, she's very alpha and takes charge because she's always felt in charge socially. So you have to let her feel in charge yet still lead the interview in the right directions. Not easy to do! I bet Burt Reynolds might have done a good job. He also had that wry, dry humour that Rachel often uses in interviews.
My first tv crush .and still is!
I am an older guy, and I love her! So fantastic.
How the hell could she be 70 or 71 yrs old here? This woman looked fabulous well into her 70s.
I love even more than I thought I would!!
It was Ann-Margret. There is a famous still photograph of it.
EXCELLENT INTERVIEW ❤️❤️⭐️⭐️
He probably didn't even watch that much of the film "that morning". Just bits and pieces thinking all he had to do was go in and wing it. Whose decision was it to have this gum drop interview Raquel ? This was a great opportunity to really probe not just the strangeness of the film but the sensation MYRA had at the time. It was one of THE most discussed movies of 1970.
Ditto.!!!!
Raquel has to realize Mae grew up at a different time and different age and you can't compare how the two aged as in the cosmetic surgery, yoga etc that come into play and aging. Like Mae and Raquel both.
Raquel Welch. OMFG on every level!
I have to agree with others: the interviewer was horrible. Why did they pick this guy? Because he's short, gay, and British? Raquel is obviously trying her hardest to be gracious while he's stumbling all over himself and looking like a complete idiot. But still, I love hearing the stories she tells about Mae West, and holy hell, I hope I look that good when I'm her age.
I loved this movie
RIP beautiful Raquel ...
SHE WAS A FAB STAR
She’s still stunningly gorgeous !
It was Mae West!
Raquel mi eterno amor! que dios siempre te bendiga!
Raquel did a Q& A for "Kansas City Bomber" at Linoln Center, and she yelled at a photographer for taking her photo. lol.
Sensational woman!
SHE IS GREAT AND FUNNY!!
classicrock64 So was Raquel
how long ago was this? microphones with long cords? what happened to wireless
Wireless phones are unhealthy.
It does not say when this was recorded, but if it was in 2012, she was 71.
Yes. Shes taken very good care of herself.
"Thank you for coming.....here."
The interviewer is a pal of the Screen Siren. He worships her and she hangs out with him socially. They are tight.
I believe you, but it sure didn't come off that way
good for her
where did they get this little queen to do the interview??? so sad
Probably from Anne Margaret's closet
from out of your closet..where else!!!!
Its Ann-Margret
he deserves an award for suffering thru her boorishness....
teenie beenie and whats his name again?
Love the interview... but Raquel, please leave your hair alone. Raquel is awesome!
Raquel Always wears a Wig. Of course, it's her line of Wigs and made a fortune with her Wig Company. But even when she wears a hat and the locks are flowing in the wind....it's a wig.
Mae would wrap her around her little finger, and probably smile.
*Ho a good personne!*
Raquel was great as Myra, but her bitterness over this film still carries... and any comments she's made over the years about Mae West are rather hypocritical considering Raquel has done everything a Hollywood actress can do to stave off the signs of aging, etc. And the interviewer is insane -- Mae never had chimps or animals of any sort... this guy is so off his game and he's grating.
+Glenn Brown Off screen, Mae West acted like a total horse's ass toward Raquel. A total jealous queen toward Raquel and got what she deserved.
Its like Dunaway and Mommie Dearest
Bitter? I see nothing bitter. It’s a train wreck of a movie but she has the good humour to sit in front of a house full of people, tell funny stories about the making of it and send herself up in the process. That’s not the definition of bitter.
Rex Reed already went on the record of how horrible Raquel Welch was to Farrah Facet on the set & behind the scenes. How she talks about Mae West who just a bit older than Raquel is in this interview is just shady. Look how Raquel is pulling out all the stops to still be a sex symbol like Mae West. Raquel is notorious for being unpleasant to people in real life too, Mae West kept her number in the phone book till the day she died for fans to call & also wrote them back when they sent letters.
Samantha 38g Well she didn't like the movie and how is was created. Mea West was always known for her jealously towards other sex symbols, she was so use to being a sex symbols in the 1930s, and she was trying to become a sex symbol again in her 70s, she didn't like betty grable, Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and would talk shit about them, every time a younger sex symbol came along she acted like a mean old women. She wanted all the attention and was rude to Raquel Welch who was a huge fan of hers, but Mae acted territorial. Mea West was the delusional, I like Mae West but she didn't get along with other females, and didn't like other women who were beautiful, she only loved men alot. Mae West talked about every sex symbol before Raquel Welch. Just because Rex Reed said it doesn't mean it's true, maybe from his perspective but there are two sides to the story. Yes Raquel is a bit older then Mae in this interview but Mae didn't look ageless and hot at 74 years old. She is telling what she knows since she was there and her side....who gives a fuck she is 76, at that age you don't give two fucks about anything and you speak your mind and say what you want. she is a legend and payed her Dues, at her age she can say what she wants. You act like it affects you, were you there, did she fuck your dad or husband, why are you all mad about shit you were not around to know. Have a few seats.
The interviewer is camp.
camp is unintentionally overdoing the unnecessary. pushing the unneeded up and over the top, I am sure this guy hasn't even approached half of what he is capable of getting his fem on !
Myra Breckinridge showcases Raquel at her most beautiful and sassy.
You are welcome Raquel ,I have come for you many times!
And what did masturbation get you? Nothing. It never gets anyone anything. Just hollow emptiness.
She was very kind AND funny to her sadly incoherent host who hadn’t a clue from the beginning what the f*ck to do, say, or ask. Welch was the Real Deal, though Christ knows she rarely got the respect she deserved even in this interview at 70+ yrs. Of age. ❤Though she did give one swift shot to her inept host when she asked if people wondered if he were a man. He deserved far worse IMO.
This Queen doing the interview is horrendous
Jamie Todd Why?
❤❤❤
Why in the world did they chose Simon Doonan to conduct the interview ? Why not a respected film critic or commentator who knows more about Welch , her career and films in general ? This was under the auspices of the Film society Of Lincoln center after all !
miltsar They got him very cheap. They gave him a tuna sandwich
A tuna sandwich.....without the mayo.!!!
Just curious, why is Raquel Welch so preoccupied with her hair?
because she wears wigs,,,,she has a wig line,,
She only wears wigs today. A woman of her age cannot possibly have such thick hair. In many photos taken today, you can actually see the netting of the wig above her forehead.
Because is a wig!!!!!
Liche Christ Because it’s a wig and false ears, lips and noses.
20th Century Fox should have hired Gloria Swanson or Marlene Dietrich for the Mae West role. Those ladies had less insecurity judging from the interviews they did. And the Rex Reed role should have gone to George Hamilton, who to me, has a resemblance to Raquel as a man!
Raquel benefits greatly from the camera being several zip code zones away.
STFU she looks fantastic for her age wonder how you'll hold up in your 70s troll boy.
@@djgforce11 I can tell how badly I upset you. Over Raquel Welch. Hilarious!
@@zackparsons3937 Yeah cause thats what trolls live for.
@@djgforce11 well, as long as you are letting us know it's working so well...
@@djgforce11 "troll boy"....that was epic!
What the hell was Rita going to play in Kansas City Bomber.. Jeannie Cooper's role ??
Rita who?
Her photos in bikini with bicycle in the ocean can be found. And of her also in bikini by Vespa. Finally of her in normal clothes on some bike. But I still don't understand where he was going with this memory of his. He wanted to be as Raquel Welch in bikini? Anyhow, I am so happy that there was much more to her than just sexuality, something beyond the cleavage and that she managed to avoid Hollywood's predators somehow like Kirk Douglas, Harvey Weinstein, ... or was she just remaining silent about that... 😎😎😎
yes, Raquel never really got over the Myra Breckinridge experience. What she resented is once Mae West was announced as being cast, the spotlight was taken off Raquel getting the role. The main focus became MAE WEST and her comeback. That's what everyone was talking about. Mae stole her thunder.
She didn't yell at the photographer. She told him to please "cool it" with all the picture taking during the interview. It was distracting to hear constant, "clicking, clicking, clicking" while trying to answer questions
That's a granny I'd love to spend the weekend with.
Well, that was uncomfortable!
Where they can....
The final line. Pure Virgo! Only Jo could come up with it. Poor Mary didn't know what to do! Their real names BTW. See me sometime if you come over. FYI that's Mary's most famous line. Not what we THINK it is!
Pity the interviewer. Raquel very cool in spite of this.
Maes character was Leticia van Allen not van Voren
Monique van Vooren
Simon Doonan needs to stick to dressing the windows at Barney's.
Was I the only one who got it!
Same reason Raquel didn't want Rita Hayworth, who lobbied for the role in KANSAS CITY BOMBER to be cast in that film. She was afraid the emphasis would go on Rita rather than the spotlight on Raquel as the star.
They've talked about remaking Myra. Guaranteed they're going to try to get Lady Gaga *L*
It would never get made in today’s sociopolitical climate.
and people still continue to worship hatred. i do not understand this stuff.
