Didn't want to interfere with your loss of the first two... but... get rid of the electric netting for sheep. Use solid wire netting. They can still get caught up, sheep can be a nightmare, BUT,,, if they aren't being bitten by the live wire, they won't jump around the same way and if they can't work out how to get out on their own, they are likely to be still alive in the morning. If the wire is hot, electric netting, they panic far worse. On top of that you are just unlucky.

Maybe your next farm animal could be a livestock guardian dog. On the sheep's previous farm, did they have livestock guardian dogs? My theory is that if they went from a farm that had livestock guardian dogs to watch over them for any strange sounds over the night to a farm that didn't have any livestock guardian dogs, they would be over vigilant and easily frightened.

I totally understand your pain & disappointment. We recently had a similar tragedy last week. Last year, we got the perfect barn kitten. She met all of our wants & needs. She was a beautiful long haired calico. We named her Jewelee. Her mother was a feral cat & Jewelee was born outside. Her mother taught her litter to hunt as soon as they could get around. They were in the same environment with the same risks. Like you, we learned from the tragedy. We are not going to give up having another barn cat. We are going to make changes before we get another one. We are still very sad but we are going to move forward.
Thank you for telling your story. People need to know the challenges of this lifestyle.

Jason. Dude. This breaks my heart. We just started sheep last year, and about one month in our ram got stuck in the fence netting. Found him very close to death, but somehow he recovered. Just as easily could’ve ended up with a loss. We did have a trail cam up, and for no reason at all, he just plowed into the netting in the middle of the night. He had been getting zapped for about four hours when we found him.
Since then, no other issues with the netting. Up to five healthy sheep now.
Hope to get into pigs soon! Y’all have been so inspiring for just about everything on our littlehomestead. Keep up the good work.

Sorry the sheep did not work out this time.
I ditto the trail cam idea. Something substantial is scaring them.could be deer. Does NOT make you a bad homesteader . Red cabbage saurkraut is good too. ... Easy cabbage dinner.....Put your favorite sausage, bratwurst or whatever in a saucepan. Put some potatoes (whole small ones or cut up in chunks bigger ones) on top of the sausage. Then put wedges of cabbage on top of the potatoes. Add a bit of salt and about 1 to 1.5 cup of water for a 3 qt. saucepan. Cook until potatoes and cabbage are done. To spice it up a bit, use a hot spicy sausage. It's a meal. So good and so easy. ❤

Well bummers! Sorry for the bad experience. Do you go to the sale barn and look for bovine? Late this coming year you might could approach a cattle farmer and offer to take a bottle baby. If it is a big outfit they often don't have the time to deal with them. Also are you near any dairies. They get rid of all the male calves too. Wondering if it would be worth it to get an older female/calf combo & start a 3-5 head of cattle herd.

Hey, I am sorry that it did not work out, but I figured I would let you know how I successfully had goats around electric fence for the last 10 years. I never used the netting but I used the poly wire which is pretty much the same without the chance of them to get stuck in the fence because there is just less of it. I would also propose have the goat/sheep in a hard fence (cattle panels/combination panels) along side the electric fence. We would let the goats out in the electric fence to eat grass in the morning then feed them a little to get them back in the hard fence at night. The hard fence would be permanent fence but you could have the electric fence be temporary and move it around the hard fence and just opening the cattle panels when needed

We’ve found that sheep do so much better with just a few strands of polywire. We’ve lost way too many animals with netting.

Thinking they were scared through the fence. Pretty skittish sheep. If it was a predator there would be evidence of it eating them I would think. Hard loss for sure.

A lot of people don't share the bad in a homestead so even though its not great news at times, thank you for sharing!!
