- Physics comes up in movies a lot, and as quite a difficult subject it is fun to see how physics is interpreted through the lens of cinema. Sometimes they get it very right and sometimes they get it very wrong!
A friend of mine who is really into movies picked out a bunch of clips for me to interrogate. Some movies I had seen before, and others I hadn't. See how Hollywood does with some hardcore physics!

Lots of comments about Interstellar: They travel through a wormhole not a black hole. My response: They are the same thing. What!? Yeah. In the model of wormholes that I'm familiar with, the mouth at each end of the wormhole is a black hole. This was why I was using the two terms interchangeably. But perhaps Christopher Nolan was not thinking about a wormhole with black holes at either end, but another kind of 'gentler' wormhole. In that case, yeah it makes sense that you can see a projection of the stars and galaxies from the other side of wormhole on the face of this side. That's cool.
Domain of Science in interstellar they were going through a warm hole, it wasn't until later in the movie that Mathews character went through the black hole.
The actual black hole they show later in the film was 'designed' together with Kip Thorne, and is supposedly somewhat accurate.
I think the stars that you see are gravitational lensing around the black hole outside of the event horizon. Or at least I think that may have been what they were trying for.

They are not the same thing.
In second point, the stars they see are not reflected but from the other side of the wormhole.
The only reason we still have paper in the future is so astronauts can easily explain wormholes.

If I remember correctly that was a battery back up since those units were meant for transportation. In which case you would want a battery system since it would be disconnected from permanent power source.

@@pallingtontheshrike6374 Most likely this is how it would be done in real life. I was only explaining what the movie's explanation for the batteries was. Plus solutions like those would be far too big for a person to transport which the movie needed. Quite frankly, the containment device itself would need to be too big for a person to simply carry around, but the movie needed something handheld for plot purposes.
Batteries also typically have much more predictable power than motors, and don't accidentally fail or switch off. They need backup to keep them charged, and that can be a tricky design problem. I've done it for systems connected to nervous systems, for safe shutoff and startup behavior, and it takes attention.

The thing he gets wrong is the implication of black holes sucking everything around them when in fact just like a vacuum is about the proximity of things that results in objects being pulled inwards. If you put a black hole in place of the sun with the same exact mass it won't suddenly consume our solar system, instead it will act exactly as is with the exception of all life on Earth ending.

I think you'd have better luck with rather then blowing the thing apart with a nuke but detonating a nuke near one off to the side to instead alter it's directory, but that would also cause a shit load of nuclear particles to spread about so prolly not the best idea, but better then the movies xD

Basic as it can be explained by equations. Complex systems are very difficult or impossible to explain with simple equation, like human psychology.
Physics is both complex and basic at the same time, until you mesure it.
I'm a contrarian, to me physics has a pH of 3.9.
I honestly thought this would be some kind of youtube-bullshit, but I'm actually surprised at how entertaining and somewhat educational too, he pointed out many things I didn't know about, or hadn't thought about that much. I like it c:

Thank God I can safely assume he can have only one girlfriend.
Also Vega is 25 light years away, not the other side of the galaxy. I did an astrophysics fail! But I didn't know what clips I was going to be shown beforehand so I was winging it. Unfortunately a few little errors crept in which I won't forget in a hurry.
What if you found a way to exponentially slow time down within a space craft while allowing the space craft to continue moving as fast as possible in order to travel through space seemingly far faster than we currently know.

If someone were to push you down a flight of stairs, the theory of gravity which maintains it is an effect of differences of mass, would ensure you would reach the other end of the stairs.
It is observable and the act of observation doesn't alter the outcome.

And not all of physics carries the appellation of "theoretical" despite the tag. In science, a theory is a tested, well-substantiated, unifying explanation for a set of verified, proven factors.
Ideas and questions are hypothetical when we offer unproven explainations for the observed yet unanswered world around us. Many questions, such as the missing parts of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, in particular, his attempt to resolve the Unified Field Theory ( without any possibility of an eigen-effect as advanced by Schroedinger ) are still in the hypothesis stage. These have led to hypotheses such as Quantum Mechanics, String Theory and its various offshoots such as Superstring and M theories.
Einstein disagreed with Quantum Mechanics and had numerous discussions with fellow physicists regarding it viability, especially Bohr who tried convincing Einstein of its potential.
A lot of it is still in the hypothesis realm due lack of observation. Doesn't make it fantasy. Only unproven. js

The math one got me, usually there's a lot more crying.
I mean, the character is a mathematical genius in the movie so-
I'm a undergrad in Mathematics (senior about to graduate,) and I just watched this scene with my classmates, and it doesn't really mean anything lol. They just wanted the cool "Cancel out the smart looking variables together" scene. Matt Damon just adds a factored polynomial to be able to cancel out like terms with no divisor, no mathematician would go up there just to cancel like terms lol, unless if it was some kind of date and its a romantic move. Basically he just makes it so that the entire polynomial isn't a rational number (a fraction.)
I just realized what I typed probably makes no sense to a non mathematician/engineer/physicist, so my apologies lol. Basically, they created an equation that was really simple, and just needed a small piece added to greatly simplify it. They made Matt Damon add that little piece, and after that they could just cross out everything to show that they're working together really well. Mathematically though, it's an equation that most seniors in high school could solve off of the top of their head.

I love these kinds of things that make PhDs or other very skilled people, into real people instead of the cliche'd mad or snooty or arrogant people they're often portrayed as. He seems like a great and fun guy to hang around with. He also realizes that 99% of his audience aren't physicists and doesn't bombard us with terms and other things we're unlikely to know.

To be fair, on the previous scene where the guy's head exploded, he said, "I don't think your head would actually explode..."
To be fair, keeping your brain inside your head is rather important. Ask anyone who failed in that regard and then ponder the time it takes for you to (not) get an answer.
Considering that the film was from 1968 I thought it was very good example of foresight to have the women wearing hats to keep their hair in place. I’ve seen plenty of images of female crew with longer hair on the STS and ISS with their hair billowing out in zero-g. Also, about his comment about falling asleep twice during the movie, in 1968 space travel was basically done in capsules and Apollo 8 hadn’t yet orbited the Moon, thus making it a bit more exciting to watch, especially for an 11 year old who was fascinated with space flight.
Yeah 2001 is more of an art installation than a movie. There is a good short movie towards the end that is around 20 minutes long. For years I believed I always slept through the first parts of the movie, but then later I reliased, nope, I was awake, it was just that NOTHING HAPPENED in the two hours of runtime until that point

Nonono, he is right. I don't think he uses "basic" as "simple" here but as "fundamental", basic like the "base" of a building. Something we uphold as a prime directive in science is that the simpler explanation, the one that introduces the fewest assumptions is the correct one, and that it will reveal more fundamental (basic) insights. There are only singular, very rare situations where we have been mislead by this.
To simulate the collision of two galaxies (n-body simulation), we just need 2 or 3 equations, all of them VERY simple: F = m * a. That's one of Newton's Laws, those are VERY basic (in every interpretation of the word).
Yeah, it's like saying "I can determine the amount of love in a person... mathematically". And the only thing you can say in response is "well, there goes the dream."

To your edit: physicists (and mathematics) entering sociology? That sounds a lot like a Hari Seldon-predicted social interaction future in Asimov's Foundation...
I guess detonating a nuclear bomb on or near an asteroid is a valid deflection tactic, but like the rockets or albedo-changing paint would have to be employed while the asteroid is still years away from impact. But the most unrealistic part of that movie (as Affleck himself has pointed out) is that it was ostensibly easier to train oil drillers to be astronauts than vice versa.
I don't know how to do either so I don't know how hard it would have been to train astronauts to drill, but in the movie they have the astronauts do the flying and the drillers do the drilling, each sticking to the thing they've spent years training to do.
The asteroid is the size of Texas. There is literally nothing they can do within a practical amount of time.
No conventional nukes can blow up something that big (and blowing it up is a bad idea to begin with, sometimes). Thrusters won't have enough time to deflect something that large since F = ma, and the m is huge in this case. You can't paint something the size of Texas in a practical amount of time.
The main problem here comes from our ability to detect asteroids. It is limited by distance, so we only have so much time to deflect an asteroid after we detect it.
@@nuknukisdead yeah but the gravitational force F= G m1m2/r^2 is really important here. Asteroid that big would probably be more pulled by Jupiter than the Earth so basically that asteroid would never hit Earth in the first place.
Also we would have to consider the position of mars jupiter saturn uranus and neptune in our calculations because they all have gravitational pull. And then the force that is pulling the asteroid to earth would have to be strong enough to counter the force of every other planets gravitational pull. That's why the bigger the asteroid is, less likely it is for it to hit Earth

@@jozokrstanovic9040 Uhh... if you think gravity is the only that matters, then there is something in the solar system that "pulls" a lot harder than Jupiter does.
Just in case you didn't get it, I'm talking about the Sun.
Also, gravity barely makes a difference for asteroids that are already moving very fast (pretty much all celestial bodies are moving very fast in case you didn't know). Notice that "/r^2" part? That means the magnitude is inversely proportional to the distance squared. The solar system is huge. Distances are very large.

Shoot! The part they skipped, the hypothesizing, was the part I was most looking forward to because it started sounding like a typical conversation I would have with my 11 yo son when he is stalling at bedtime. Those moments are so precious. Great video, anyway!

Maybe I'm just a sappy hopeless romantic, but I thought that was a very sweet touch. In all the infinite coldness of the Universe, and through all the adversity, it's his love for family that pulls through in the end. A very human "coming home" story in a hard sci-fi setting, and I appreciated it.

Oh yes! Why are hackers always typing essays? Don't they have a mouse? Don't they believe in having literally any of their code written before they start trying to breach security? And clearly the top guys never make typos at 600 words per minute. Anything that the directors/editors think the public won't notice if they fudge. Computers, engines, firearms, medicine, physics, history etc. The list just goes on and on. Unlike Dominic here it totally puts me off a movie when say a 250cc two stroke motorcycle makes an engine sound like a DOHC 4 cylinder superbike or bullets get stopped by cars or GMC vans chase and catch up to ... well anything. It's like the film producers are just shitting on their audience for me.
The same can be said about anything if it's your profession and has been featured in some movies.

What that folding paper wormhole example gets wrong:
Space is continuous. It is deformable, but not tearable.
A more accurate example would be:
Take a rubber sheet. Draw two dots on it.
Now pinch between those dots and twist. This is a more accurate example of the maths behind wormholes.
You will notice that to bring the dots closer together, you need to twist a LOT and pinch closer to one dot than the other.
The thing that does this 'twisting' in reality is a spinning mass. typically a black hole. To create a 'useful' wormhole would mean creating a black hole ~approximately~ near the center point between your origin and your destination and make it REALLY BIG AND REALLY SPINNY.
Think, bigger than the mass of whole galaxies, and spinning with a surface speed close to the speed of light.

So far all models that depict an edge normally have major flaws in them and do not match our observation.

You don't need an edge to expand, because all of space is expanding. Think of it like grid lines that are constantly flowing outwards. You don't need an edge, because every square on the grid is getting larger. That's why objects farther away are moving away quicker than objects nearby. All the intervening space is expanding and there is more of it to the farther object.
We don't know if there is an edge, but we assume there is no edge. The closest thing you can get to an edge is the edge of the visible universe (where that location is receding faster than the speed of light, so the light from objects there will never reach us). Not a real edge, but kind of one... *shrugs* At least as far as we'll be concerned on Earth.
I dunno about "tearing" space but as far as we model the universe, black holes "tear" spacetime in the sense that the metric of spacetime blows up at the singularity (i.e. our model of what is happening there mathematically treats it like it's a hole in the universe), so in that sense spacetime can be torn. However wormholes would come about I think it's probably better to visualize them as something like: www.space.com/20881-wormholes.html , which is the most similar looking picture to the models i remember playing around with in school

Yeah I remember a scene from Smallville where Clark (who can't fly yet) jumps over a dam to save someone who was thrown over. Somehow he falls faster than the victim, and then he catches her with his stretched out arms while standing on the ground lol. Ummm if someone fell 200 feet and landed on 2 steel beams, they'd be spaghettified. Clark catching her that way would be the same thing.

No joke, Interstellar is what made me interested in physics and mathematics. Up to that point, I was set on chemistry, but watching that movie blew my mind (regardless of how accurate or inaccurate it is), and it's what caught me onto my first love

Funny thing is, I remember that folding paper explanation from A Wrinkle in Time, the book. Except they described it as a piece of string where a worm moves across and a wormhole is when the string folds into a loop so the worm skips across a large portion of space time.

I think my favorite take on the paper trope was in SG-1, when an advanced humanoid alien was trying to explain how he sent the communication and used the paper trope to explain it, and Dr. Jackson said "Wait I know this, you're talking about folding space time." and the alien guy just gave him the kind of smile a parent gives to a young child and just said, "No."

You are CERTAINLY not the only one. That movie was painful to watch. I never finished watching it nor do I want to. That thing is a snore fest. Though, to be fair it's Kubrick, so, it's to be expected.

@TheBlackiwid Makes sense but I also think Kubrick was going for a more artful or philosophical approach rather than just showing a story on screen. And I think it was better that way for that movie. The sequel if I remember correctly was more focused on story and I liked it less than the first.
The color scene at the end (you know what I mean if you've seen the movie) takes way to long. If you think the ending of LoTR3 was too long, it doesn't even come close to that scene in 2001 a space odysee. :)

The physics in 2001 was excruciatingly accurate (outside of the Monolith.) When it first played in theatres, they handed out booklets to explain that the "Open the pod-bay doors, Hal" scene where Bowman jumps through vacuum and lives, was actually possible. You don't instantly die, you don't explode, you don't instantly freeze.
Also, in 2001 they only pretended to have "sticky shoes" (It was Velcro by the way)
Actually in reality (this was a movie made in 1968, before anyone even had a chance to try walking in zero G) they float.
It was thought at the time this move was made that people would want to walk in zero G for psychological reasons. But as usually the psychologists were wrong. People want to move in the easiest way possible, and floating is much easier in zero G than walking.
The REAL reason for the hats was so the long hair wouldn't hang down, destroying the illusion.
It was artificial gravity created by a von braun space station. The whole movie plays off of this and it ia a very important part in the movie.

@@lesley1831 I chose particle physics, more specifically heavy ions. During my masters I worked on the more theoretical/phenomenological part, and on my PhD I worked with actual Pb-Pb collision data from LHC :D. Heavy ions is the future of particle physics, after all :P

@@lesley1831 It took me almost 6 months after I had started my masters to decide on heavy ions. The dilemma I had in my bachelors was whether to study General Relativity or Quantum Mechanics. So at first I thought about studying something related to Quantum Gravity. However, that seemed like a huge bet for me at the time and I gave up on the idea. Heavy ions got me when I read that collisions of Pb-Pb in the LHC were creating this new kind of plasma, which we believe existed in the beginning of the universe. I don't regret my choice, but it'd have also been nice to contribute to quantum computers :D.
I loved this so much!! Everything science in Jurrasic Park is laughable, but it's one of those movies I could watch forever. And you dont get it man...LOVE conquers science! LOVE!!!
