Julia Kristina Counselling, it's working! I kind of was doing this before but since I watched this video, I am saying Stop it, knock it off, cut it out with more conviction and it is working. This has greatly shortened the time I'm in that stinkin thinkin mode.

I am :) And another great tip (I think) - that I got from a therapist once - when you have these thoughts (negative/anxiety thoughts) - look at your balcony door, or your entrance door - and say out loud (that's the best thing to do, otherwise - just say it in your mind, works too) - I see you, I hear you, now you have to go out on the balcony, and stay there. And then we can talk, tomorrow.
Now I tried this - after feeling overwhelmed with negative thoughts and anxiety, and it worked. Not just once, or twice, - it worked several times. It is the easiest method I have come across, to help deal with anxiety. It's respecting your own thoughts and feelings - while at the same time, telling them in a respectful manner, that yes, I will listen and take care of you, but right now I am not able to do so. Tomorrow, we can have that talk.

The way you describe it, our thoughts are habitual, like taking the same route across a field or through the woods, and creating a pathway. The nice thing about a pathway is that it's familiar and tends to be easier: the grass has been worn down, you can see where you are stepping, branches that would poke you in the eye have already been removed, etc. So, when you say to yourself "Stop!" this requires you to find another way. This requires you to forge another path. This is going to require work, breaking off new branches, watching out for uneven ground. Anyone who does any serious hiking is grateful for the fact that someone else already established a path.
I wish everyone well, as you create new paths that better serve you. As always, watch out for bears and snakes.

I often find myself saying "Hi thought. You can hang out if you want but I'm not going to give you any energy., I have a lot of stuff I have to do today." It's amazing how this can fairly quickly become your default reaction to these kinds of thoughts. Not sure I like the term 'shutting it down', because that kinda implies fighting the thought rather than (as you say) not giving it the time of day, but it's just semantics really. Great video!

Of course it works like this!! I don’t know how I didn’t put this together before. When I quit smoking, years ago, I used to visualize my brain making new pathways, creating new ones to break the habit. I contribute that to how I quit successfully. I’m really excited to use this same technique with negative thoughts. I’ll give it a try for sure! Thanks 😊

  • @NancyDaCostaTV

Absolutely. The more often you consciously pay attention to the negative s*** that comes up in your head and consciously tell yourself you're not going to engage it, over time you start to shift your own psychology so that it doesn't come up so much. Our brains are wired via those neural pathways, and this is how we can consciously change how they flow. This is about taking control of this process instead of just letting it happen (because it will happen no matter what). Thank you for sharing!

    Hi Julia,
I must say that for the majority of my life, I created an extensive negative feedback loop of unproductive and destructive thoughts towards myself that at times spiraled out of control, which I was not very proud of. What I am, however, proud of now and going forward is that through my own research by listening to knowledgeable resources on the subject, valuable coaching from many people very dear to me, combined with reading books and taking care of my self with balance through awareness, I have substantially decreased my negative thoughts of myself and my life has been much fuller and brighter. My comment to your video is that it is very true advise and I thank you tremendously. I still have “itsy bitsy gremlins” from time to time and I am, however, working on challenging and negating them through awareness of my needs at the moment.
    Thank you Julia!

I am highly emotional and I'm in a situation where I have my only choice is to do this right now. It's hard but it's getting easier. It works! When I'm alone I take the time to find the fear. Then I talk lovingly to myself until I realize the fear is a lie. ❤

YES, I am with you, Julia! I do my best to avoid negative thoughts. I never tried to say "STOP" Out loud but one thing I did and it helps a lot is I named the "owner of the voice" Cruella De Vil, LOL I used to say: Cruella, go sweep the driveway!!! (Instead of telling ME what I was doing wrong at times). one thing I love to do is to put MUSIC on. SO if the negative thought comes when I am in the car, I find a song I like and sing along. The hardest part for me is when negative thoughts come to my mind when I am going to bed, or wake up early for some reason. I am going to use this technique to just say "STOP". I love that you explained how we can program ourselves to have these negative thoughts coming easily. One more reason to make them STOP now. Thank you!!!

Your counsel on this subject is Spot On ! Thank you for putting these videos on RUclips!!
As a Christian I memorized these Bible verses that help me with those stinking negative thoughts.
.For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every Thought captive to obey Christ,
    2 Corinthians 10:4‭-‬5 ESV
Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, Think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].
The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things [in daily life], and the God [who is the source] of peace and well-being will be with you.
    PHILIPPIANS 4:8‭-‬9 AMP.

I'm with you! I'm having this struggle with negative thoughts...but the biggest one is a negative reaction before anything has happened. Short, short, short version is whenever a certain situation at work arises, and this is on a daily basis, I will immediately feel hostile, defensive, just overall not in a good place. And then the situation goes by rather pleasantly and I tell myself "Oh, you idiot! Don't think like that anymore, you made it feel unpleasant for no reason!"....and then I do it again. I am aware of these thoughts and know I am capable of stopping or changing them but I feel like I have conditioned myself to react like this and it's getting myself to stop anticipating and going to that "bad place in my head" instead of letting it play itself out. Thanks Julia!

Wow, I used similar tactics a couple of hours ago prior to watching this video, it was the right thing to do. I had to do an in-class presentation a few hours ago and my anxiety was building and building waiting to present for my group, something I was not happy about doing. I felt I was headed for a disaster presentation, a poorly prepared off the cuff group report, and I was the last to present off a chain of incredible prior presentations by my classmates. I was outside myself and could not focus and the thoughts of bad presentations past that had as you say Junia "etched themselves" a quick path into my thoughts. I knew that in order to at least function properly I had to admit it was not going to be great but I was determined to not make it a disaster and found ways to shut down the almost panicked state I was in. One thing I did was recognise where we went wrong as a team and explained honestly and up-front what we could have better and talk about the aspects we had attempted but failed to get to fruition, but I also asked myself is this really worth all the anxiety and I said no. That freed my mind just enough to relax so I could focus on getting the opening sentence out, then things went relatively smoothly thereafter. On my way home and coming down from a disaster averted high, I began to feel negative again. Now after watching your video, I recognise that my brain can work against me. I can take action on my thoughts in these moments and at the very least not let them become disasters. Thank you for this Video Julia, much appreciated.

Thank you Julia. I'm with you. That really works Julia.
I have a suggestion which is "Why don't make your video coloured?".
You will be much more beautiful than what you already are Julia.

SO glad it connected with you. Thanks for your suggestion: I do the black and white so my videos stand out and are easier for people to find.

So true. But just like you can get stuck with those negative thoughts all your life, shouldn't it be possible to do the exact opposite? Not easy, just possible. 😊
I think we give too much power to negativity. Maybe work on balancing it out. Just like you pay close attention to negative thoughts and become immersed in those, do the same when ever you have positive thoughts and feelings. That way you'll be able to obtain some sort of balance so life doesn't feel like a big ball of "gross" all the time. (Speaking from experience)

I am hoping this will help me with my projecting. Sometimes I find myself when I have had a bad moment that I project onto others who do not deserve it. Now that I am more aware of it more I will try this thought process.
