In the UK we can only buy the new BMW M3 and M4 as their Competition variants which means with an 8spd Auto gearbox, but in other markets there's also the Non-Competition with a manual. Where better to find out what it's like than for a quick lap at the Nurburgring!
i disagree - automatic is also "fun" on the track, just a different kind of fun. i'd say if you buy a sportscar mainly for the road then go manual, if you buy it mainly for trackuse get the auto (if its double clutch).
To no honest, manuals are slightly overrated nowadays. Yes, they are getting rarer in performance cars, people say they’re more fun, but you’re driving on the highway / motorway 90% of the time in your car, where a manual would be troublesome. I think the manual hype is more of people wanting to fit in with other petrolheads and sticking to the “petrolheads rules”.
@@th3orist i think when you're looking to have fun you want the max engagement which the manual provides, except when you're after laptimes then i guess auto atw
@@Nur__ I'm not saying you are wrong, but with these cars I think the manual just doesn't fit anymore. noise insulation and weight are both so much on this car, it feels stale with the manual IMO. I personally think the added power and being able to shift mid corner would be more exciting and also better for doing some skids.
@@yungboicontigo9278 I do enjoy them, i had 3 of them, e46, e90 and now f30. All brilliant to drive and didn't had anything significant to repair, also done 200 k + km on all of them.

Manual transmission cars are fun, this will test your driver skills on how will you be able to use certain techniques like heel and toeing and how will you mix and match the clutch, brake and throttle pedals.
Can we just appreciate the noise that car makes, a lot of cars sound good from on the inside while you drive but most you need to stand behind to really love, this thing sounds awesome from the drivers position
I do not like any BMW after the e46, but seeing a manual transmission on an m4 just made me watch this video from start to finish. props BMW for keeping the manuals alive.
It's good to see that Shmee is actually a great driver unlike alot of RUclips personalities. Someone who can push the car and do what it was made for instead of cruising around just talking about it.
I'm considering ordering a G82 M4 with a manual. I have had manuals since 1969 when I bought new Mercury Cougar to drive across the US from Sacramento, California. I've never owned an automatic since, and currently have a 2015 F82 M4 with a manual. I guess I'm old school, but then I'm 75 so I and retired, so it figures I would be.

Great video. I got out last year but doesn’t look like I will be able this year. Nice to watch someone else enjoying it so that’s the next best thing I guess.
I've watched your videos every now and then for a very long time. But I think all these laps take the channel to another level. It's also fun to see how your driving is improving. I guess the Nordschleife is the perfect track for youtube. The content' wouldn't be the same with a shorter track! Great work Tim! 👍
That was the most intense driving I’ve watched in a long time and the angles were what made it work so well. Well done driving and keeping out of the other cars. I puckered my ass a few times. Best one of your vids yet for me and I’ve watched many. Sounds just like my 2020 M4 from inside so I can’t imagine putting my car on the Ring.

Fantastic driving. Also, I am shocked you are talking so much while driving. I couldn't handle it while at a track like that but I guess that shows your experience out there. Bravo!
That was awesome Shmee! Man, us Americans are missing out! I would love to have something like the Nurbergring in my area 😆 That looks like so much fun! Great video 👍🔥
The manual in this g8X series is the best. im getting me second now went from g80 manual to g82 manual. Just put a short shift kit on it and its shifts as good as a gt3. love this platform!! This atmosferic linear engine is perfect for the manual!
there were already a few non-competition m3s and m4s which were dynoed and they tend to output way more than the 480hp. Usually, even the non-competition ones do above 500hp
For the track nothing is faster than the auto but for most people that like to have a connection with their car like only a manual can give the manual is definitely the way to go. Most people that cry about manuals going away buy autos so what are they crying about? And most don’t track their cars and let’s face it, the milliseconds or even seconds in a race that the auto has over the manual, who cares unless big money is on the line and those aren’t daily driver aspects for most people. Tim tore up that track and made the Bugatti driver that took Misha around look like a Putz. M4 smoked the Bugatti time more than likely because the driver was scared he would wreck and ruin car sales...lolol Well done TrackMasterSchmee150 or 250...lol
Tim: Manuals give you the connection to your car that you don't get with autos...you don't have that purity, old school engaging feel Also Tim: We've got the gear shift setting which is auto-rev matching, we've got that on Oh and Tim can actually drive!! Nice
I just saw the new 4 series, and in the flesh, it works better than in video where the car looks massive, but the hips just don't work for me. The previous 4 series on the road, with the flared fenders, has such a presence, with a very planted stance. The m steering wheel looks so so thick. Tims abilities are now more that acceptable, watching hip lap the ring is really cool
My ideal specification if I had the money . The only diference between this and the one I would have is mine would be blue and have comfort seat. Like I said if I had the money. One can dream 😉
Mine would be something dark (maybe satin black or gray). Still struggling with that front facia & why I still have my M2C (currently shopping for a CS). It'll be interesting to see what the 2023 M2 looks like. Cuz I love how the current M2 looks.
There’s nothing like driving a legit gated manual....I learned to drive manual in an early ‘70’s Ford pickup with “3 on the tree”....I’ve driven everything from that to a 13-speed Peterbilt cab and about everything in between....I still have my ‘04 Saturn Vue SUV with a 5-speed just because it’s a stick....anyways great content as always and CHEERS from across the pond!!
Hi Tim, that was a fun ride! If anyone doubted Shmee can properly drive performance cars, just check out this video. I didn't expect it to be quite so quick, I wonder if it is a little lighter then the M3 comp? The manual is the biz especially with the auto-blip. That small erection in the seats is flawed though ;)) Cheers!
Cool to see Misha and the guys in the background. 👍 A couple of those passes looked a little iffy, not sure they saw you coming. 😬 I agree, autos are faster on the track, manuals are fun and engaging! 😀
For me, I would go with sliding doors on family cars. In fact, that’s why I’d choose an MPV for a family car over an 7-seater SUV. You still get a decent raised driving position, they’re very practical, have so many more useful features in terms of cubbyholes and storage bins, and the sliding doors mean tight parking spaces are no problem.
"It is a significant step up from the previous m3", gets gapped from a 15 year old bmw with 300hp less thru wippermann ,brünnchen till the end. Does it start with a card? I drove a 2021 M440i a while ago that had no keys, just a card lol
So, you're telling me that BMW likely de-tuned the manual so the auto-box would be faster.
You gonna get the Giulia GTAm?
Will the M3 Touring be available with a manual? If so, that would jump to the top of my list of desirable wagons/estates.
100% prefer auto to manual 🚗💨
