Product Description:
When design work began on The Lord of the Rings in 1997, the look of many of Middle-earth’s most evil creatures was open to interpretation. Loose descriptions in the books, plus rough sketches by seasoned Tolkien artist John Howe, helped guide Wētā Workshop concept artist Ben Wootten in his development of the Balrog.
Ben Wootten’s background studying both art and biology informed his designs and rooted the Balrog in a tangible anatomical reality, while the flaming mane and cracked lava hide gave it an elemental savagery - elevating the creature above the rest of the trilogy’s less fantastical monsters.
In 2001, the epic clash between this titan and Gandalf the Grey thrilled audiences and left us with the immortal phrase: “You shall not pass!”
20 years on; the Balrog has been reimagined once more by the team at Wētā Workshop as part of our Classic Series line.

Looks like you delved too greedily and too deep.
And he awoke something... shadow... and flame...
Be careful to keep it away from Glamdring. Don't wanna break this beautiful statue.
The statue would fall from the high shelf and broke the floor where he smote in his ruin.
I quite like the movie version of the quote, where he starts out by saying "you cannot pass", and he ends the speech with "you *shall* not pass". It feels like an increasing level of intensity as the speech goes on, which works really well in the arc of the scene.
You need to give us a tour of the nerd cave
You shall not pass is certainly more dramatic and definitely works better for the scene in the film than if Gandalf had said You cannot pass.

I like "shall not pass" it seems more in line with Gandalf's speech patterns.

You know what you were saying about the invention of digital fire makes me think of how technology improves when we’re trying to develop things in higher forms. This reminds me of the Race for Space. So much was invented in that time for the benefit of humanity by trying to reach higher levels for humanity. Peter Jackson and Weta did the same. They didn’t just make a movie for the movie’s sake. They were making a higher form of cinema and in the process made an epic that forever changed the world of cinema. George Lucas is one of those too. They’re the reason why things moved forward and why movie from then were so good.
Maybe I'm seeing things, but does the Balrog have some kind of symbol or rune on his forehead? Is it a mark from Morgoth?

When I was a kid my eczema looked a bit like that. :)
"I don't know if there is a more exciting feeling in my mail-day, than when I get a box in the mail that says 'Weta Workshop' on the side of the cardboard." Testify! I can certainly relate to this excitement, remembering the day my Bag End statue arrived from Weta :) It sits proudly atop my dresser, right next to my main bookshelf, and level with the Tolkien books.
I’ve been to Weta work shop in NZ, seen all the movie props and armour.. it was amazing. I live in Australia, so NZ is only 3 plane trip away

Really well done! I could see how the Balrog could have been very hard to create for a statue like this - very cool.
I suppose it could have more instant impact out of the box if most of the body was slightly brighter and not as black.
I looked at their website and was like “wish I could afford those” then I saw some posters in the 30 dollar range and was like “I can ask my wife from my wife for Christmas and might get it” lol weta does such fantastic work

No. If Gandalf doesn’t fall, there is no Gandalf the White and the Balrog would still be alive wreaking havoc. Completely different outcome.

I think the fire could have perhaps been a different material, with some translucency or something. And installed lights making it glow, illuminating the model :=)

Good Morning! It's nice to sit with my morning coffee and enjoy another unboxing of the amazing work of Weta Workshop. I heard your explanation that this is not a 1/6 scale reproduction, and I read in the description that this Balrog is 12" tall. By any chance does it say anywhere on the packaging or literature included exactly what scale was used for this statue? Your nerd cave is amazing and you have many beautiful items of decor cunningly placed. This Balrog will make a fine addition! Have you ever considered installing some of the available imitation lantern lighting that simulates a medieval lantern's flickering flame with animated lights? I think that would be an amazing mood-setter for filming Tolkien content :)
Awesome statue. Free League’s The One Ring RPG has their Moria supplement in draft, and they stat’ed out Durin’s Bane _and have information for creating Nameless Things_
