This video was so helpful. Thanks. You got straight to the point and didn't drag it on by talking and talking about things the majority already knows about.
I love how CLEAR your instructions are. I altered a shirt while I watched your video and it came out beautifully! I had been stalling on this alteration for three years and had it done in minutes! Thank you.
Best tutorial for this I found! Finally someone who addressed how to compensate for the narrow to wide fold up. I kept getting puckers. I hate to sew, but I still want my mending and alterations to look nice. I’ve shortened the sleeves on 5 of my hubby’s shirts. THANK YOU!
Old fella new to sewing. I enjoyed the video but would have liked to have seen you sew the alteration. What I did see has definitely gave me some valuable info on making short sleeves on my work shirts. Thank you 😉
Thank you so very much for this information. I have been trying to shorten a shirt for my husband, but I was very frustrated with the different circumferences after I cut the sleeve off. You cannot imagine how excited I am to head into my sewing room and finish this job. He will be so impressed with his new sleeves. Thank you again for this informative video.😀
Dear Mrs. G. You did a fantastic job in showing us how this can be done! it is one of the most comprehensive and clear videos out there on the subject! Thanks so much for SHARING with us!
Thank you need this for my costume couldn't find any short sleeve purple shirts so this is an informative video that helped me a lot even for a kid who can see but can't do it exactly and my parents can see so this is a great way to presentthis Thank you for yourtime
Nicely done. Clear, well explained/illustrated. Useful info for both converting long sleeve to short and adjusting many styles of sleeves that are too long. And for minor adjusting of sleeves that are too large. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this great vid. I just today tore out the elbow of one of my favorite shirts and I'll do this to keep it going since I love the fabric and pattern of the shirt.
Great tutorial, Mrs. G! This is exactly what I need to do with my husband’s shirts. You explained this so well and with good details that I feel confident that I’ll be able to execute this technique. Thank you!
Thank you Mrs G, had done this on partners work shirt, followed different measures but same principle, but yours is by fare easier to understand and I’m British too x
Thank you so much for your tutorial. It was very easy to understand now we can fix the mistake. I made trying to do it without watching. Thank you very much.
You executed this task well and I can now follow what you did with my partners shirts that need turning into short sleeve summer shirts. Thanks once again
Thank you for this great tutorial! I'm in my American Legion post's Honor/ Color Guard and I have a men's shirt to wear made of linen....I always look wrinkly! 😔. Went to Goodwill today and found a nice men's long sleeve shirt that I want to shorten the sleeves. Your video is great! You addressed the the difference in the sleeve length and how to fix it! I think I can use that same technique to narrow the body of the shirt using my linen shirt as a template. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 😎❤️
Hello, thanks so much for your tutorial. I have been wondering how to do this for awhile now . Your directions are very clear and simple to follow. Would you also please consider showing the stitching and ironing parts as well ? I don't have a sewing machine but would appreciate seeing how it's done because I'd luke to get one eventually. And, hate to say it, but a lot of younger viewers have never used an iron. Thanks so much for your video ! ~~~Laura
A good tutorial with one small exception. The only length marker should be the fold line down the middle of the sleeve, not the underarm sleeve length. Once the fold and length from the shoulder is established, mark a perpendicular line from the fold across the sleeve using a t square, ignoring the length of the underarm sleeve. Doing it as in video can create a slanted sleeve hem, because every sleeve and armhole has a slightly different shape. (This is noticeable on the plaid shirt. ) Another thing to be aware of is that shortening a long sleeve, since you have to narrow the width for the hem allowance, may result in a sleeve too tight in the biceps if the long sleeve is not fairly loose on the wearer.
Thank you. Very detailed and simple explanation. The only difference with my alteration is that it is a short sleeve shirt and I have to make it shorter from the inside of the sleeve because it has a logo on the edge of the sleeve. I'm sure I'll be able to work it out.
Thanks for showing how to do that. I've got several long sleeve shirts I wanted to make short sleeve and I just didn't know how to do it. I was afraid to cut my shirt sleeves off and ruin my shirts. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I think I might be able to do it now. I may have to watch the video again just to be sure but thanks a lot.
Loved your video very well explained & made simple. Was just wondering if I haven’t got another shirt to lay on the sleeve to Mark where I have to shape the seam so fits how do I do that, Thank you
If you haven't a shirt to lay on top I would recommend wearing your shirt and figuring how long you want it on your arm and marking with chalk or pins. Do that on one side and use that measurement for the other sleeve.
Thank you for the help. You have good and clear instructions. I done everything you instructed ,but, I still could not get the hem to lay flat all the way around. It has to be something I'm not doing wrong. But I will keep trying.
Just remember to take your time. And keep trying. Good Luck. If you have questions you can ask here or I have a Facebook page in which you can ask too.
You can but it depends on the fabric and the look that you are going for. Hemming your clothes keeps the fabric from fraying and keeps your clothes looking neat and tidy.
hi emily! if i wanted to make the sleeve just a little shorter (without using the guide of my origial shirt), how could I do that? would I just free-draw a curve ? thank you for the video!
You can still use the shirt as your guide. Just lay your guide shirt where you want it to be on your long sleeve shirt and make your marks from there. You will have to free hand the curve but it should be pretty similar to the original tutorial.
Hello Mrs. G! I'm new to sewing and your video was the easiest one for me to understand so thank you! I was wondering if you could explain at 11:07-11:12 how did you make that part? I'm confused if you cut first, and then sewed it together? or did you sew first and then cut the excess off? I know you kind of explained something, but I'm unfamiliar with the words you used sorry! That step is confusing me and I'm not sure how to go from there. Thank you so much for your video and I can't wait to watch more of your videos to learn (:
I just reviewed the clip. What I did was sew the seam first on my sewing machine. But because that would have left a raw edge I then went back over it and sewed along the line with my serger. My serger would then wrap the edges in thread so that they won't fray. Or as I stated there is a stitch on regular sewing machines that imitate a serger stitch called an overlock stitch. You can use that instead. I hope this helps and Thank you for watching my videos.
Just found this, so excited to try, you make it look so easy! Quick question, what ruler is that that you used? Also love that you explain how to "cheat" if you don't have a surger. I've subscribed and am excited to explore more if your videos to help improve my skills!
Emily, thank you for your tutorial. I'm stuck on 6:24 of your video. Because my sleeve is slanted such that the bottom fold extends past the shirt to the table. and the top of the fold slants into the shirt. I don't know if my description makes sense, but I don't know what I've done wrong. Your shirt at 6:24 shows the bottom fold laying inside the shirt sleeve, and I assume the top part of the fold extends beyond the shirt. Mine is the opposite. I've rechecked the measurements multiple times. The top 11 1/2" and the bottom 7". Is it okay to proceed with the slant as it is? Thank you for your help!! -Elizabeth

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. It is called a french seam. You can google it and I will try to put together a video soon about french seams.
my short sleeve work shirt has an outer fold that I need to replicate on one of the currently-long-but-about-to-be-short sleeved shirts. Haven't found a tutorial on how to get that yet.
No. It’s an external fold that somehow has the raw edge of the hem in it. Like in this photo - tradewear.com.au/products/bisley-original-cotton-drill-shirt-short-sleeve-khaki-bs1433?variant=7671308255290&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5uvblJLr6wIVz34rCh1tBg0wEAQYECABEgKd9PD_BwE
I am sorry for responding so late, you got caught up in my spam filter. But you do the exact same thing as you would do in this video except you fold and sew on the outside of the sleeve instead of the inside. In this video you hem to the inside, on the shirt that you linked you just do the opposite. So you hem to the outside. Do you understand?
Correct. You fold up the hem and the raw edge is tucked under just like in the video. The only difference is that instead if sewing it to the inside of the sleeve where you can't see it, you sew it to the outside where it can been seen. It becomes a style choice at that point.
