    Dynacomp just has it in terms of A/B comparison. For someone who doesn’t gig much the quietness of the JAM makes it the winner for me.

  • @shadowulf

    I think why some are having trouble hearing the difference is Dan is testing "in context" on a Tele.
    A deeper dive into them might pull out the subtle differences, but a compressor is a "transparent" effect. As in its usually more noticeable when it is missing than when in use

    The JAM is definitely more subtle in a “always on” setting and gives a great universal level. But, that DynaComp almost acts a faux gain with its nasty (good nasty, like nas-tay) compression. It’s always a winner in my book.

    Dan and Mick, is that a Roger Mayer RM 58 limiter on the top shelf in the back? If so, can you please use this in a future video? Perhaps you can use it in a video to discuss limiters VS compressors. The RM58 pedal is often cited as being some sort of magic holy grail but I’ve never actually seen it demonstrated or used in anyway to really explain why and if anyone can explain this pedal, or debunk the legend, TPS can. Thank you.

    You can still get 70s early 80s dyna comps for insanely affordable prices if thats your thing. I bought a 1978 dyna for $100 CAD 15 years ago, and have listed it a couple times for the same price with no takers so it a really overlooked/under valued sound. I use an SP now live (cuz blend, power supply, active light, dont wanna break it) but vintage dynas have such a squishy crunchy feel

    Dan,
    Thanks for the concise comparison video! I also have an MXR Dynacomp and occasionally I look to see if anything more modern can replace it. The Dynacomp takes a lot of gas over being "extreme", but that is needed when trying to get the classic sound on a 12-string. Do you have any opinion on the Jam Dinosaur for use on 12-string?

      Forgive me throwing unrequested advice your way: You might be listening for a pitch or tonal related change, and that is not the primary change the compressor adds. Listen for the volume of the guitar. It goes flatter, meaning less punch on the pick attack, and less obvious die off of the volume. It flattens/levels the volume of each note or chord. If you have a compressor, max the compression and strum over and over while switching it on and off until your ear is trained to hear dynamics, then start turning the compression down until your ability to hear dynamics becomes refined.

    • @allanflippin2453
      @allanflippin2453 3 месяца назад +1

      Many times, a compressor doesn't make an obvious difference in the final sound. That's why compressors are so hard to demo! Normally, a guitarist has to put a lot of effort into making each note ring out clearly. This limits playing speed. You can't move to some other note or chord too quickly without compromising the sound of the previous note/chord. With a compressor, you find it's easier to switch around more quickly without wrecking the sound. So the difference is in the feel of it and how fluidly you can make changes.

    I'm liking these "shorts" type of videos! Sometimes the longer videos seem to be just too verbose... Like how I pulled that big word out for the description??? That's sort of what I am talking about....less fat and more meat is what I am after generally speaking. Admittedly there is an entertainment value to it on occasion but not every time is it that way. I'd say a concise shorter version of say 30 minutes or less more often than not would be better IMHO.....
