She originated the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway to huge success at 21, then was signed for the movie at 25, and a star was made. Great movie, great songs.
Yes! Don't Rain on My Parade is amazing. I hope th I s current generation watches your reactions to Barbra.....they don't realize what they have missed by not seeing her act and hearing her sing. She IS the greatest!
Thanks for watching the entire scene, Saeed...I am always mesmerized by this performance by Barbra! (and the lyrics...wow!) The way she displays her defense mechanisms through humor is impeccable to me. Your reaction was beautiful...and thought-provoking, as always. Blessings upon you! 💜
This was her signature song for many years. She was always such an incredible vocalist. Another amazing talent we got to experience growing up. Love movie musicals. She and Julie Andrew’s filled the theaters with great music. She makes it look so effortless too. She wasn’t traditionally beautiful but she was mesmerizing on screen. Such a good actor.
Thank you Saeed for finally getting to this song. If you ask a Streisand fan, name your top three songs, this would be one of them. I’ve been rewatching several of your reactions today and you mentioned your love of cinema and your need to watch a number of movies. Have you thought about a second channel on movie reactions? I know that would be a lot of work, trying to edit a two hour movie down to roughly thirty minute reactions, but I’d definitely subscribe to this new channel. Thanks again for you’re reaction.
She did win the Best Actress Oscar for this in the only tie in the category's history sharing the award with Katharine Hepburn for "The Lion in Winter" (a great movie and a well deserved win). Someone else mentioned the number "Don't Rain on My Parade" from this film and I strongly second that recommendation. It's a real showpiece for her.
People *do* need People. People need to learn to cooperate with each other if for no other reason than the fact that *nobody can do everything by themselves.*
After watching Funny Girl at the cinema when it was released, I wanted to sing like that lol - bought the album, sang along to it for hours.....then watching you react, I remembered every word! Love her films and her voice, amazing to see it again after all these years, thank you for reacting to it
I just rewatched Funny Girl. Barbra owned that role in the movies and Broadway. I watched a clip of my favorite actress Bette Davis who said she went to see Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl on Broadway and was totally in awe of her talent and in love with Barbra. High praise! Thank you Saeed for your great reaction! 🎶🎵🎼♥️
My father was driving me to school when this came on the radio. Neither of us had ever heard her sing. We were stunned. I said, "She's going to be one of the biggest superstars."
It was Lubbock, Texas in 1969, the summer before my sophomore year of college. I had watched her win the Oscar a few months earlier. Of course, I had heard of her for a few years before that, but my teenage tastes in music hadn't quite matured enough to appreciate just how great she was. I had heard all the jokes about her nose, her "crossed"-eyes, etc., so when my group of friends went to see the movie, I was not prepared for how beautiful she was on the big screen. She had me at "Hello, Gorgeous!", her first line, spoken to her own reflection in a backstage mirror. I was mesmerized. It was the start of a love affair that has lasted all these years. (I'm about to turn 74.) I've seen every movie multiple times, bought every recording, every book and magazine , and have even gotten to see her in concert three times. To say she has been a big part of my life is a monumental understatement.
This song "People" is one of the great songs from the musical "Funny Girl" starring Barbra Streisand. Great movie! It is based on the life & career of Fanny Brice who was a Broadway & film star & comedian. Hope you watch the movie sometime.
Definetly one of my favorite movies (you really need to watch it) but the soundtrack is phenomenal. Especially this song. It just makes my heart melt. After losing so many loved ones I didn’t want to need people so I wouldn’t get hurt again, which is not the way to go and sometimes I still struggle with not letting anyone get too close to me. This song reminds me that though that it’s a work in progress and it is good to need people. That’s what happiness is all about. A side note another good song of hers to hit from this movie is My Man, so so good.❤
She was on Judy Garlands tv show and they sang together. It was magic, Judy was so fragile but she still belted it out and she looked like she was passing the baton to Barbara . You could see the joy and respect Streisand had being with Garland .actually broke the genre of leading ladies, they were almost always blond petite very European. I think you would enjoy getting to know Judy Garlands work ☮️
I had only heard the version they played on the radio but that was nice ! My dad loved Barbara he had all her albums when I was young , when he was in the nursing home with Alzheimer’s I used to play her music for him as he laid in his bed …. Something tells me he heard and enjoyed it at least I’d like to believe that.
She appeared on the Judy Garland show in her early career. They did a duet - a mash-up of Get Happy and Happy Days are Here Again. It is possibly the best thing I have ever heard. I wish I could have been in the audience. I did see it on Tv in 1963 and was hooked on Barbra's voice at the ripe old age of 10.
This was her signature song through the 60's - and this movie is delightful, can't wait to see your full movie reaction! (...and I had a big crush on Omar Shariff for years...)
I have, in my mind, always felt Barbra has the best voice. This was way back when I first played that old LP back in the 70s. I have heard many other greats, just like everybody else. I just keep going back to her. Thanks for continuing to revisit my favorite girl.
Barbra Streisand is indeed an EGOT winner, with an asterisk. LOL While she was nominated for two Tony awards (and she only starred in two Broadway shows, to my knowledge), her Tony win was for Star of the Decade, a special non-competitive award. You are correct that many EGOT winners received their Grammys not for music, but for Spoken Word Recordings. Many other EGOT winners are composers or producers who dabbled in television, music, film, and theater and we probably wouldn't even recognize their names. Regardless of how people personally define true EGOT status, Barbra Streisand is indeed a performer who can do it all: sing, act, write, produce, and direct. Her talent is immense!! She is also the only artist in history to have a #1 album in six consecutive decades. I'm hoping she puts out one more #1 album in the 2020s to extend that record to seven decades. That would be a record very difficult to beat indeed!
Thank you for this reaction Saeed. After an almost 65 year career, you have many, many more reactions to do of Barbra's work. And I look forward to watching them.
You should actually see the live performance, of this song, on the Ed Sullivan show. She was a teenager and this performance blew everyone away; as it set her career on fire🙀
When this movie came out I was a teenager. My cousin and I took our moms, who were twins, to see it . All of us loved it a lot. I appreciated her talent right away and I’ve been a fan of her for decades now.
You mentioned EGOT status. Her journey to Egot is of particular note. She won her first Grammy for her first album, she won her first Emmy for her first tv show, she won her first Oscar for her first movie. Unfortunately she lost both her Tony nominations but she was awarded a special Tony is 1970 for Star of the Decade, thus completing her EGOt journey at age 27.
One of my favorites… It’s amazing the fashion difference between 30’s,40’s and 50’s and today.. People wore tuxedos and dresses to social events not t shirts and jeans.. Well said Saeed it isn’t a weakness to need other people
Some of Streisand's comedy films are really hilarious! I was a teenager, and I went to see them all in the theatre. My favorites were "What's Up Doc", with Ryan O'Neal, and "For Pete's Sake", with Michael Sarrazin. I wonder if they hold up today.
A very popular song on the radio back in 1964. Some great lyrics in htis song, my favorite is "A feeling deep in your soul Says you were half now you're whole".
"Harold and Maude" (1971) , speaking of a romantic comedy movie that you won't forget once you've seen it. So you should see it. Cult classic. Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress.
this is from the movie version of the musical Funny Girl [about Fanny Brice the entertainer/comedian October 29, 1891 - May 29, 1951) in which Steisand starred inon stage the early 1960's. The original record of this song sung by her was released in 1964, made it #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. this was really Barb's theme song back in the day. She "owns" this musical through and through...and this song...
Yes she won the Academy Award that year and it was the first and only year there was a tie for Best Actress, She tied with Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn got hers for A Lion In Winter, which you should check out. Both very deserving of their awards
EGOT = Emmy ( for tv) Grammy ( music or singing or speaking albums ). Oscar ( movies). Tony ( Broadway) Next please text to Barbra singing: Dont Rain On My Parade.....from Funny Girl. Its a wonderful movie with many great songs. Its funny, sad, dramatic, poigniant and one helluva good movie.
It's hard to imagine now, but in 1967 when Egyptian actor Omar Sharif kissed Jewish actress Barbra Streisand it was considered an international incident. Sharif's films were banned in Egypt and Streisand received death threats.
Story is the she did thirty takes to record this, The guy who tells the tale says he could hear no difference from one to the next until he played one and thirty in sequence. He got it then!
You must watch other of her performances of People......all are different. Also you might want to watch her performance in "Nuts".....a totally different role.
I love your reactions` I hope you get around to watching her clip of "Roller Skate Rag" and "I'd Rather Be Blue" from Funny Girl. It is a HOOT. You will love it~
Hi Saeed, will you let us know when you've watched this film, also The way we were, and A Star is born? We would love to hear some reaction from you. Thanks.
As a Phil Collins-aholic, I have one for you. Just the right length for your videos. Since you like acting, perhaps you'll consider his short movie 'Calliope' from 1993. It is only about 15 minutes long but is a smart parody of the murder/mystery genre. Warning, there is no singing. You'll have to go back to Genesis or his solo career (and you should). Check out Phil's acting. (and more singing)
She originated the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway to huge success at 21, then was signed for the movie at 25, and a star was made. Great movie, great songs.
I think you meant "a star was born."
Yes! Don't Rain on My Parade is amazing. I hope th I s current generation watches your reactions to Barbra.....they don't realize what they have missed by not seeing her act and hearing her sing. She IS the greatest!
Now you HAVE to react to Don't Rain on My Parade from this musical. Also, another great Streisand film is What's Up Doc with Ryan O'Neal
Thanks for watching the entire scene, Saeed...I am always mesmerized by this performance by Barbra! (and the lyrics...wow!)
The way she displays her defense mechanisms through humor is impeccable to me.
Your reaction was beautiful...and thought-provoking, as always.
Blessings upon you! 💜
I was mesmerized as well. Beautiful scene! Definitely a film i need to watch this year.
Thanks so much for introducing me to it! ❤️
the one and only babs !
All of her performances are great...so hard to pick a favorite one...love them all
The movie that launched a legend! You'll love watching it.
Definitely on my list for this year.
Thank you Saeed for finally getting to this song. If you ask a Streisand fan, name your top three songs, this would be one of them. Oh I love Don’t Rain on My Parade. That last notes she hits is incredible.
I love your Barbra reactions ❤❤❤
she is on her own level! she sings People so exquisitely that it's almost too much to take! she was perfect in this film!
People *do* need People. People need to learn to cooperate with each other if for no other reason than the fact that *nobody can do everything by themselves.*
Well said!
One of the most enjoyable reactions I've seen in a very long time, Saeed. Thank you. Funny Girl was the #1 film of 1968.
“Great out the gate”…what a perfect description of Barbra’s career … ❤
After watching Funny Girl at the cinema when it was released, I wanted to sing like that lol - bought the album, sang along to it for hours.....then watching you react, I remembered every word! Love her films and her voice, amazing to see it again after all these years, thank you for reacting to it

This is one of Barbara Streisand's signature songs. I always love hearing it. Thank-you for your reaction! 🙂
She is astonishing isn't she? Her instincts are impeccable. Funny Girl is easily my favorite musical of all time. And I LOVE this song.
One of my favorite Barbra Streisand movies is "What's Up Doc?" co-starring Ryan O'Neal. So funny!
My father was driving me to school when this came on the radio. Neither of us had ever heard her sing. We were stunned. I said, "She's going to be one of the biggest superstars."
Barbra está tan Llena de matices en su actuación, es extraordinaria...
The first time I heard her sing this on the radio- I was in awe! TYVM for letting me hearing this again!
US Billboard Hot 100 peak # 5 but is considered one of Streisand's signature songs.

Gorgeous voice!
Barbra is so charming here. (not to mention her angelic voice) Nice to see how she slides effortlessly from the acting to the singing. wow.
Only one of many scenes why she Won the Oscar! All of her Talents were on Full Display in this Film!
This was her first ever movie. And like you say, she won the academy award. Such a brilliant artist and so many ways.

Funny Girl just came out on Criterion Collection in last November. It looks incredible newly remastered.
Barbra is Unique in the world
I saw Funny Girl on the big screen when I was 6 years-old and I have loved and adored
her ever since! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Second Hand Rose is real song Fanny Brice did, which Streisand did on record, short song but hilarious.

Cómo se abstrae del entorno, mostrándose tan vulnerable...
You must watch other of her performances of People......all are different. Also you might want to watch her performance in "Nuts".....a totally different role.
My Man at the end of the movie will settle in your bones and stay there.
Funny Girl is an awesome film. You should check it out.
Omar Shariff is a snack in this film
