This is a very tough subject. On one hand the Frenchy is an awesome dog. We have rescued three and fell in love with them all BUT they have lots of health issues, expensive health issues. Allergies are a given, you really can't escape that but it is usually a food problem so finding the protein that works best for them. Our last Frenchy had to have rabbit and he still required frequent baths. Next big problem is IVDD Intervertebral disc disease. As much as frenchies love to bounce around and jump they should not be allowed to. A mild case can result in a 3 month crate rest or it can be a full-blown spinal surgery that range in the $10,000+ range. When we rested our last French it was a home surrender and they disclosed that he had epilepsy but it was controlled through medication. It was not. He had a seizure about every 5-7 weeks. A seizure usually resulted in an emergency room visit and a couple day stay in an oxygen crate. He survived with us for 2.5 years at a cost of over $50,000 in ER visits. Listen there are always exceptions to the rules and a healthy French is possible but rare. A safe bet is to stay away from designer frenchies. The bus, lilacs, merles as they are brought with issues. They are easy to fall in love with but be ready to spend some money and NOT drop them of at a shelter when things get rough.
Our Frenchie could be a twin of yours, a male @33#. He’s about 2 and 1/2 now and we got him one week before the initial Covid lockdown. The breeder who offered him had three left from his litter but he stood out as the big boy. We’ve had bull terriers, standard and miniature, and PBGV’s but Buddy, our frenchie, is the best of the lot. Great video, great information, one quibble. Buddy is stubborn, even in obedience classes the trainer, who trained police dogs, said the dog has a mind of his own. Buddy knows basic commands and ids not out of control but he has a mind of his own. Best he knows good from bad. So far, no health problems even though he is more white than the cream he was as a pup. Other than shedding and grueling, no issues…yet. Oh, he loves his crate. It’s his safe place..
You are describing my experience with our frenchie to the T. Ours is 8 months old and has been healthy up until now. We did switch him from kibble to cooked food with added supplementation at 12-14 weeks old. We noticed he no longer had tear stains and no more snoring after removing kibble from his diet. We do keep up with brushing, washing paws and cleaning skin folds, also reducing possible allergies. He is very social, alert and smart. He alerts us when anyone approaches the home or our car. He is not reactive to other dogs or people, he is also freakishly strong and is very gentle to children...he knows the difference between adults and children. He has no phobias, he prefers to be with us 100% of the time. HIGH maintenance is not an understatement! You need to be available and dependable for a Frenchie, not for first time pet owners is correct, he is our 3rd family dog. We work with a trainer 1x every 2 weeks, early training was key to us, he can get comfy and stubborn, but he has learned so much with his training... he knows he is the prince at home.
I think I am getting one. I’ve got a bad disability so going on long walks is a big issue, but I can manage short ones. I would never be out leaving it alone and I would have loads of affection to give. I can arrange a really long walk once a week of about 5 miles - basically I just want a buddy 24/7

Thank you for sharing the good and the bad so that people can make an informed decision before they go out and enrich some of the few unscrupulous breeders out there. My friend and his son insisted that they had to have a Frenchie puppy from a breeder. We begged them to go to the beautiful SPCA that our city has, but no, they insisted on getting only this kind of puppy. In our city you won’t find dogs or cats for sale in stores because there are plenty of adoptable animals available. Luckily they purchased health insurance because it’s been one problem after another. First it was allergies, then explosive diarrhea (outside) and then tons of back problems. His vet didn’t want him to get neutered until he was full grown. The dog got very aggressive. I used to be able to get him to drop what was in his mouth or I could get him to open his mouth, but he bite me once and I never tried again. He would pick up everything and eat it. The owner said to bribe him with a treat, but why reward bad behavior? I know all this because I walked him Monday through Friday. I’m not making this up, but he would get so excited pulling at stuff that he would get an erection and start ejaculating. I recorded it for the owner because who would believe me. He finally neutered him after 18 months of begging, but he was still really aggressive and only the emissions stopped. I am not trying to be some kind of pervert, I just want to be a help for others. A lot of men don’t want to have it done because they think of themselves. The animal really doesn’t know the difference. We have a cat with terrible gum disease and he needed all of his teeth removed. Once his gums were healed, he eats hard food and treats with no problems. If he was in the wild, he would die without teeth to tear apart a live mouse and eat it, but he lives with us and we feed him. Thank you so much for maybe reading this long comment. Maybe you have time now that you don’t play video games for too many hours?
Tony I keep coming back to your videos because of your energy. You're so calmly positive and sincere. I think you should make more videos about achieving a productive healthy mind-set alot of people (myself included) really struggle with a hard pull towards negativity and negative-thinking.
Thank you Lime House Blues! I'd love to make more content about that stuff because I absolutely struggle with it, too! Appreciate your kind words, it means the world to me :)

Thank you for making these videos because every source I look at always says different things. French bulldog is a such difficult breed ..... but the workload is worth it too me !

Frenchies are very exspensive dogs to have ...they definitely love people and animals in less they were abused like you said...
I know this video is older and quite a bit of time has past but I just want to say, Adopting for your First Dog Ever can be very difficult, borderline impossible without having a personal history with a vet and references about your handling and care of animals. I have always been a big "Adopt Don't Shop" fan but when I started doing research into rescuing and adoptions, i learned that decent rehomers will do some serious research and time into potential new owners bc they do NOT want to see that dog returned AGAIN. A lot in my area wanted a few months of vet records for previous pets (of which I personally never had) and references, so in at least SOME cases you have to buy/be gifted a dog first to build a repertoire as a good owner inorder to be able to adopt/rescue later on.
My fiance, me and our 9 year old would love a frenchie. We have googled certain things as we both work full time but she would be let out for 30 minutes at lunch time Mon-Fri (on his/her own from 8:30 - 4:30 apart from the 30 mins at lunch). Google results say they are great dogs for full time workers but everyone on youtube says otherwise. We thought they are small, generally low energy and really cute but might not be the right dog for us :(
You might consider adopting an older dog! A puppy will require a lot more attention. Once Tortellino was about 2 years old he was more comfortable being left home for long periods but as a puppy he needed a lot more human presence. Consider an older frenchie that needs a forever home, lots of wonderful rescues out there trying to help them find homes! 🤗
Frenchies get very attached to their owners (by which is meant members of their pack). They do NOT like to be left alone, so if you are going to be gone all day, a Frenchie is not for you. Or you would not be good for the Frenchie. If my wife or I are gone and there’s just one of us at home, our little guy gets anxious. He wants both of us home together. I have to stress that if you are going to have to leave your Frenchie home alone all day, do the dog a kindness and leave him for a family who can be with him consistently.
@@richarddelasota1812 We did decide against it :) They are not cheap to insure either. Too many people get dogs and don't have the lifestyles for one or even the correct insurances etc
Frenchies are perfect for those who work full time. They are actually low maintenance and don't require a lot of exercise. They are just fine sleeping most of the day. If you are around they will sleep next to you. They love to be next to people. They're the sweetest!
I agree with what you said. Another issue I had when he was a puppy is everyone runs up to you to pet them and are over the top with their dumb baby noises. This has caused my frenchie to become more hyperactive than a frenchie should be. Just a word to the wise don’t approach dog owners in this way. I even had a woman come running up and pick him up and start kissing him all over before I had time to react 😡 After now having a frenchie I see the issues they have and I hope that one day they are breed in a different way and the current form of frenchie banned. To help the breed overcome their health problems
We have two. A blue brindle and a cream fawn female and male respectively. I totally agree with what you say. Bottom line despite the cons...we love and are totally happy to have them. They bring us so much joy. The cream one just became a therapy dog for disabled children. We couldn't ask for a much better dogs. You so have to do the work and investment To keep them happy and healthy!
What kind of food do you feed? I've tried a few different ones but he hasn't tolerated any of them, so I've been preparing his food, which I hope is not long-term🤦🏼♀️
How long did it take your Frenchie to heal after the nares and soft palate surgery? Did you notice a difference within the first few days or did it take a while for recovery? Kashmir, my female Frenchie, had it done this past Wednesday and I feel as though she’s still having a rough time. I have an email out to the doctor but I know that healing times vary so I’m just trying to get others who have had the procedure done stories. Thank you in advance!
Each dog recovers differently. For Tortellino there was an immediate improvement that got better over a few days. Other dogs I've heard needing a week before seeing the improvement. Just be sure to keep pestering your doctor if you don't see any improvement! Sometimes there can be complications that need to be corrected.
Surprisingly no we havent, but we do wipe his face when it gets too wet. We keep a few hand towels around for when he drinks a lot of water or comes back from a long walk and has slobber. Always nice to help keep him clean and dry!
After you mention your dog had breathing problems I thought that when I first saw his face. It’s very flat. Many people when buying a frenchie do not look at the nostrils on them and to see if the are open or closed. It’s the breeders over breeding and also in the states they are breeding them smaller. My fawn I wanted one that looked the same as the ones in the vintage pictures. Nowadays they look very wide and flat nosed. I went to see his parents before purchasing. Many people buy without seeing the mother or father.
Ex vet nurse here they shouldn't have long walks due to the breathing issues Frenchies are not french they originated in Nottingham UK ,they were bred by the lace makers who were french but living in UK ,not many people know this So glad that here in the UK they are now breeding them how they are meant to look with the longer snout and therefore will have less breathing problems My son has a Frenchie as an emotional support dog,I dogs it him alot,he's great with my grandkids,he likes to show off to other dogs,I call him the "torpedo" he's fast for a stumpy legged dog and has a head like a wrecking ball which has caused injuries so beware of their heads! They do need the folds around their noses to be cleaned and their bottoms to be cleaned at times but they are lovely dogs,it's just a shame they have such bad health issues (including hips) and don't have a long life expectancy due to the breeding
Go to the hardware store and buy a grill brick. Rub it up and down his fur and it will rip the undercoat out and stop the shedding. It is like a furninator tool but cheaper
Easy to train??? Then my dog is no french bulldog 😂 okay yes, he learned basic commands like sit, down etc. very quickly but he is so stubborn oh my gosh.. when he doesn‘t want to listen when I call him or want him to come to me (when we are going for a walk) he just doesn‘t listen and does not come to me because that flower he‘s sniffing is more interesting. Sometimes it gets hard but you want a Frenchie? Then be like a Frenchie - stubborn 😂
Mine listens so well like 85% follows me everywhere and follows all commands. Then for whatever reason he gets in moods where he will just look me in the eyes and is like nope. Lol just super stubborn it's cute as hell. Unless we're in a hurry. (He goes everywhere with me) sometimes he is being stubborn I will leave then wait like 10 seconds open the door and he is all the sudden ready to go 😄
use to have an Italian GreyHound & thought they were from Outer Space Mars most likely. Watching behaviors of Frenchies i concluded they come from Mars as well Girl Friend/Fiancee has a blonde potato..definitely from another solar system--Mars; NO NOT HER..her Frenchie!
Basically you have to be really proactive asking questions. Can you meet the parents? Can you play with them for a few minutes to see how quickly the get exhausted? Etc
I’ve had the pleasure to live with 6 different dog breeds over the span of my life, from small to big, from short to long hair and I have to say that my frenchie is the breed who sheds the least, so if you think that that hair on your shirt was a lot, you obviously haven’t had much experience with other dog breeds. Plus my frenchie doesn’t drool, AT ALL. So don’t teach people wrong things about the breed, tell them that this your experience with the breed, don’t generalize!
It depends! I think in general girls tend to be less energetic but they can also be less affectionate. I've seen with certain breeds of cats like Abyssinians that males tend to be calmer and females tend to be more high strung.
I'd rather tell you the truth than make it seem like it's a great idea. French Bulldogs are a lot of work and they're really unhealthy :( There are so many other dogs that need a home and maybe if you're lucky you'll find a Frenchie that needs re-homing but just know that it will be a lot of work and money to maintain them.
@@TonyCassara thank you for your response , i live in nyc and it gets really cold outside and really hot inside with heaters so it is looking like a complicated situation ☹️

A mild case can result in a 3 month crate rest or it can be a full-blown spinal surgery that range in the $10,000+ range. A seizure usually resulted in an emergency room visit and a couple day stay in an oxygen crate. He survived with us for 2.5 years at a cost of over $50,000 in ER visits.
Smart move always meet the parents if you can!
❤️
Ex vet nurse here they shouldn't have long walks due to the breathing issues
Frenchies are not french they originated in Nottingham UK ,they were bred by the lace makers who were french but living in UK ,not many people know this
So glad that here in the UK they are now breeding them how they are meant to look with the longer snout and therefore will have less breathing problems
My son has a Frenchie as an emotional support dog,I dogs it him alot,he's great with my grandkids,he likes to show off to other dogs,I call him the "torpedo" he's fast for a stumpy legged dog and has a head like a wrecking ball which has caused injuries so beware of their heads!
They do need the folds around their noses to be cleaned and their bottoms to be cleaned at times but they are lovely dogs,it's just a shame they have such bad health issues (including hips) and don't have a long life expectancy due to the breeding
@@intuitiveeevee lol no way, my dad also calls our frenchie “torpedo”!
Anybody can compare Pug vs Frenchie on trainability and intelligence ?
He's not fat, he's THICC🥰❤
What do you mean on the breeders ???
Go to the hardware store and buy a grill brick. Rub it up and down his fur and it will rip the undercoat out and stop the shedding. It is like a furninator tool but cheaper
3 years later how is your little pooch?
He’s great, thank you! Maybe I’ll do an update video soon!
I want one with less smushed face. How do I go about that with breeders and stuff?
Basically you have to be really proactive asking questions. Can you meet the parents? Can you play with them for a few minutes to see how quickly the get exhausted? Etc
How long does it take to fully train them?
The diet has a lot to do with the shedding actually. Change their diet to raw and you will see a decline in shedding.
Yea, it's shedding because it's diet sucks, he isn't feeding grain-free
I’ve had the pleasure to live with 6 different dog breeds over the span of my life, from small to big, from short to long hair and I have to say that my frenchie is the breed who sheds the least, so if you think that that hair on your shirt was a lot, you obviously haven’t had much experience with other dog breeds. Plus my frenchie doesn’t drool, AT ALL. So don’t teach people wrong things about the breed, tell them that this your experience with the breed, don’t generalize!
This is my take also
@@HKNYN1 Mine is an angel, he sheds minimally as I brush him daily. I had a white one that shed way more.
@@hamletwong5820 which colour is your current one? Really considering getting one
Male: 41#
Female: 38#
Both are European bloodline
Should I get a female or male
Not all tru indeed ...
Fonzie never drool and is 6 years old.
I heard tugging is not a good idea, due to messing up their spine
Let's do it again
Are girls are a lot calmer? Mine is.
It depends! I think in general girls tend to be less energetic but they can also be less affectionate. I've seen with certain breeds of cats like Abyssinians that males tend to be calmer and females tend to be more high strung.
Is he a stud?
Nope, we had him neutered!
I never owned a dog and you telling me no :[
I'd rather tell you the truth than make it seem like it's a great idea.
Yeah they’re sensitive little things but I’m sure lots of people in NYC have them. You might join Fab Frenchies on Facebook and ask if anyone there has tips.
@@TonyCassara i will do that , thank u again , i subbed
Frechie forever ...
Do they stink?
For sure xD
@@vincecool72 lol
Yes they let gas off like you never smelled beforex

Yep. It will burn your nose!
Annoying, needy, stubborn, weird. No thanks
