  • I decided to try something new in the world of Rig Walk Arounds, and I got a hold of the keys to this very nicely equipped overland purpose built Toyota 4Runner. Now I still meet with the owner and we take a close up look of his truck, but then I get behind the wheel and share my impression of driving out on the trail with you! #4runner #overland #toyota

    What a beautiful 4Runner! I had an '88 model in Maui that was charcoal and black. The black section could be removed to make the runner a "convertible" and it was the perfect vehicle for the island as much of the island roads were unpaved or just rough. Camping on the high bluffs above the famous surf spots was absolutely phenomenal.

    I agree I just love off road vehicles myself. coming from a Jeep to now new proud owner of a 4runner. Its true people hate but whats cool about our hobby it makes us hella broke and if we see each other stuck in the trail we don't hesitate to help.

    I was actually going to get a 4Runner instead of a Jeep for the cargo space. But! after one session doorless and topless, I was sold. I own both a JK and a 4Runner. The jeep is a very fun vehicle, but compared to the 4Runner it is cheesy and has bad road manners. It’s fun at the beach and what not, but my daily is the 4Runner. I don’t do any serious off-road but in my case both trucks can get me where i need to go, especially since my 4Runner has a rear locker. I am ready to check out the JL rubicon with the power soft top. I was unimpressed with the new Tacoma as well. The 3.5 is a heck of a downgrade from the 4.0.

      @@rogersmith3295 I was in automotive repair for years, and will say Toyota trucks didn't have as many repair visits yet the maintenance combined with repair costs were pretty equal. Now days they're all about equal except for abnormal shit boxes like the transmission issues in Grand Cherokees recently. But off road literally nothing street legal is more capable than a rubicon. It has steel bumpers, sliders, swing out carrier, lockers, sway bar disconnect, and 33's all stock (35's fit without any mods too!) and gets about 5 solid more MPG city than my 4 runner without steel bumpers... but it won't do 85 on the highway very nicely. vegas wajeel They both are similar yet completely different for what you want. They are both body of frame, similar gas mileage, similar capability, and both have great resale. However, if you want to go straight rock crawling the the wrangler is the better choice and you can also customize everything and take the top off and doors off, but they are usually crappy daily driver vehicles and bad road manners even if some say they like them just fine. The 4Runner is more for overlanding, moderate trail riding and have great cargo room for family and equipment. The 4Runner has better road manners due to independent front suspension. You can’t go wrong with either one just depends on what YOU want. I’ve owned multiple jeeps and now a trail edition 4Runner. I’ve never had a Tacoma so no experience there, but they are the truck model of the 4Runner basically

    A-TRAC, as I understand it, applies force to the wheel that has traction and stops the wheel that does not have traction, preventing it from spinning and digging in. The computer makes micro adjustments real-time to get out of situations that 4-wheel low and RR DIFF LOCK can't get you out of.

It has open diffs and the ATRAC system utilizes wheel slip sensors and the ABS system to mimic a limited slip diff by applying selective breaking to shift torque to wheels in need. I don't know about a less powerful engine... my 4runner engine feels very weak, struggles to pull a 1500lb trailer up a hill, and sucks gas like crazy. On paper, it looks more powerful and more capable but real life the 4runner feels doggish.

    Two guys talking 4Runner. Love it!
    For the RTT, I narrowed it down to the James Baroud Evo vs Alu Cab, but then saw the Camp King imported through Sloop Imports out at Overland Expo.
    Whatcha guys thin among these 3 options?

      I miss my XJ's... and my WJ most of all. 4runner is roomy, and handles washboard roads really, really well... but gas mileage freaking sucks! So do payments.

    Jeeps are literally just an American thing. You go any where else in the world you’ll see that the government in different countries use Toyota’s as their vehicles. If the Toyota Hilux pickup came to the states, jeeps would go down hill. Hilux would dominate the US Market.

    • @AmericanMan961
      @AmericanMan961 5 лет назад +5

      silly man, the Hilux WAS in the us, it failed, thats why it isnt here, and jeeps for overlanding arnt really a thing in the us.... its mostly Ford Rangers and Toyotas from what iv seen very rarely do you see a jeep, they’re trash, 110% every jeep i have owned and driven was crap, the plus side to them is they’re cheap and parts are cheap too

    • @Joseph-rx9tp
      @Joseph-rx9tp 5 лет назад +6

      Isn't the Tacoma basically a Hilux?

    • @anthonyreddy2834
      @anthonyreddy2834 5 лет назад

      I really don't understand why Toyota, has tacomas in the us and hilux in every other country!
      I don't understand there thinking 🙄

    • @abdullahmahmood3040
      @abdullahmahmood3040 5 лет назад +1

      No the Tacoma is not basically a Hilux. No the Hilux was never in the states before. And no, it never has and it never will fail. Look up “chicken tax”, your government will block imports of certain vehicles as it will put GM/Chrysler junk out of business indefinitely.
