    It was one of the most anticipated introductions of the entire year. N871HK, Southwest’s brand-new Boeing 737-8 Max featuring the companies first livery. “The Herbert D. Kelleher” as it is appropriately named took tot he skies with revenue passengers onboard for the fist time on November 16th, and on November 17th, I would be there to take it’s fourth revenue flight. The first of its revenue flights to take place in complete daylight. Now, you can join me on Southwest flight 352 with service from Houston, Texas (HOU) to Santa Ana, California (SNA). An appropriate flight to be documented in 4K as it progressed directly over the deserts of the United States. The same deserts that the livery it wears was inspired by. Herb One as it will be called no doubt, is flying again! Enjoy!

    Many people probably disagree with me, but I think this is currently the most beautiful aircraft in the world. I literally squealed and beamed at my monitor when it came into frame. It's so incredible seeing that iconic, STUNNING livery on a brand spanking new beautiful MAX. It makes me so happy seeing it in video -- idk how I will handle myself the first time I see it in person. So thrilled u got to ride it so soon (and upload again :]).

    Why so much flaps on takeoff? I've never seen that flap setting for takeoffs on any 737 variant. Interesting.
    This crew showed some mercy on the passengers during landing.. Not only a pretty good landing on a short runway, but they used the entire 5700', instead of going for the previous turnoff like most of the others do while testing their anti-skid systems lol... Too bad that private jet was blocking the exit, could have caused an issue for traffic behind you.

      The heart logo wasn't added until much later in this liveries run. The 90's if I remember correctly. So, there's speculation that is was left off because it wasn't true to Southwest's original livery. The anti-glare shield likely wasn't added as it just requires extra maintenance, and from what I've heard from pilots, didn't really do anything to prevent glare anyway. The other aspect of the original design that's missing on this version is the windows aren't outlined in white like they were originally. Again, I've heard this was done to help with maintenance down the road. No matter what, this is a beautiful tribute nonetheless.

      Thanks my friend. I refuse to compromise the quality of my videos for comfort. So, that's why they're so smooth. I do not connect the camera to the plane with a mount in any way. I hold the camera by hand to keep it separated from the plane. Thereby eliminating the vibrations and jitters that come with mounting the camera. Yes, it is not very comfortable for me, but it provides the absolute best quality final picture possible. And then I use iPhones to film with. Their cameras are outstanding when filming in 4K, and they conform to the FAA and airline rules about electronics being used. The FAA permits "small, handheld electronics, weighing less than 2 pounds to be used during all phases of flight." So, anything larger and you start to flirt with that rule. And I've seen flight attendants tell people using larger DSLR type cameras that they must be put away for takeoff. Everyone has a phone, and 90% of the people on the flight are going to have it out during takeoff and landing. So, the flight attendants don't even bat an eye at it.

      You heard it right. Southwest operates a lot of through flights, or as Southwest calls them "one stop flights." This is where you buy a ticket form, say, New Orleans to Las Vegas, but the plane stops once in Houston. You don't get off the plane. You sit there for 35 minutes and they board new passengers and then the plane continues on to Las Vegas. Well, someone did that here and got off a the wrong stop. They didn't realize they were in Houston and thought they were in Las Vegas.

    Good catch of not only the Herb Kelleher taking off but New Mexico One pushing back. Long ago, SWA was known for their 10 minute turnarounds, now long gone, wonder what happened? The paint scheme makes this -800 look longer, almost a -900! I believe I saw two JSX E-145's parked at the executive ramp during our taxi in. Can't ask for better weather for weather. Did you continue on elsewhere? Any idea where your aircraft started its day before HOU? Imagine being a flight crew doing the WHOLE run of this aircraft that day--?-HOU-SLC-MDW--We're well aware of your jaunt of the one-day run from PVD to SEA--which I must confess I've yet to view!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  Год назад +1

      Two for one special at the end. One of Southwest's older specials with their newest. As for what happened to their famous 10 minute turns... I don't know for sure, but I suspect it has a lot to do with the way aircraft have changed, flight schedules have changed, and people's flying habits have changed over the years. First, back when it was 737-200's you're talking about about 110 people. Now, the 737-8 Max holds 175. That's a lot more people to cram in. Plus airlines used to scheduled their flights much differently. And even though Southwest still has a lot of through flights, gone are the days where the'd stop at a city and only 10 people would get off and 3 would board to continue on. People also travel with a lot of bags these days, which takes longer than 10 minutes to offload and load back up. The quickest turns I know of in the industry today are Hawaiian's inter-island flights. They're scheduled for only 25 minutes of ground time. I also know that some regional jets like the 44-50 seaters at American are also scheduled for 25 minute turns, but they're much smaller than the 120 seat 717's that Hawaiian operates. So, a 25 minute turn is more impressive on the 717. That said, I don't know that I've ever successfully seen Hawaiian turn a 717 in 25 minutes. It's usually closer to 35 minutes in my experience. They make up the extra time with schedule padding in the air. I believe Southwest has a 35 minute minimum turn now. I don't think I've ever seen anything scheduled for less than that. Either way, 10 minute turns are a thing of the past.
      As for the routing of this plane, I can fill in the gaps as I was watching it closely. The aircraft was delivered to Southwest in Phoenix the day before this flight. It then went though "make ready" by the Southwest maintenance team in PHX and was slotted into the schedule that evening. It flew PHX-DAL-BNA the first night. It overnighted at BNA, and then the morning I flew it, flew from BNA-DAL-SNA-SLC. It actually didn't continue on to MDW and it was swapped for another plane. MDW had snow in the area and delays. They swapped it for another plane and sent it on to AUS I believe. I only took it on the one flight from DAL-SNA, and then flew back to PHX to head back. home. In total, I had 4 flights on this day. TUL-HOU-SNA-PHX-TUL. By the time I got back to my bed, I'd been on the road for about 22 hours. It was a long day.
