I will always be that 16 year old RedSox fan. But I will also always be a Bill Buckner fan as well. I loved that 86' RedSox team. Bill Buckner quickly became one of my favorites. Do I forgive you? Bill there is nothing to forgive!!!! My pain that night was also for you. I felt so bad for you. Just know that that 16 year old kid loved you more than any World Series. I will remember you with love and the utmost respect one person can have for another. God bless you and your family. May the peace and serenity of Heaven be your's now. Goodbye my hero.
What is so sad is that the world we live in a person can do a million things right in their life time but God forbid they do one thing wrong. They will always be remembered for the one thing they did wrong
I watched Bill Buckner win a batting title for Chicago - .334 I believe. He was impossible to strike out. He used to drive pitchers crazy because he could foul off like 8 straight pitches after 2 strikes and still get a hit or a walk.
I always loved Bill Buckner, game 6 is one of may memories I have of him and those Red Sox teams. I am truly sad that he had to go through that. People hate on Buckner but he was still a better fielder than Benzinger or Horn ever were. His range was a bit diminished but even that year he was an excellent defender (.989 fielding %) Buckner is HOF worthy IMO but only by the Veterans committee, he was a very good; sometimes great player.
I am a Mets fan and remember every thing about that game and I said to my friend hope that doesn't ruin his legacy. How I wish that was a line drive Into the gap or a single. I didn't want to win the game on a error . I never looked down on him or the socks heck the enemy of my enemy is my friend. May God have mercy on his soul .
I have always contended if Buckner fielded that ball cleanly it was not a guarantee that Wilson would have been out at first. Buckner was playing deep and Bob Stanley was late getting off the mound.
And Mookie Wilson was one of the fastest players in the game at that time. He was up there with Willie Wilson, in my opinion. I don't see how Buckner gets to first base before Mookie does, given where that ball was hit and where Buckner was.
McNamara had subbed Dave Stapleton all during the playoffs, until that game. HE could have pinch D Baylor the previous inning. McNamara put Bill Buckner in a position to fail. McNamara was the anti Belichick. Buckner should have been in the HOF.
Should never have come to that anyway. Schiraldi and Stanley couldn't get 1 out. He retires the first 2 hitters in the 9th, and can't get it done. Never shouldve come to it. He has done nothing that needs forgiveness
It's just so like the Soxs to look for escape goats. Happens when you create a culture of losing, pitiful that that town would do that to an inocent man, who was by all account a great ball player. Red soxs fans ought to be ashamed.
@darrell mfume nicely said. Bill Buckner belongs in the Hall. When the sox got him I new we just acquired a hell of a ball player. Come on folks the Hall of Fame was made for players like Bill Buckner. In the 70s and 80s only one ball player had more hits than Buckner....and it was the hit king Pete Rose. And he played in four decades (1969-1990). Hall of Fame= Bill Buckner!!!!!!!
@@donaldwilcox1085 Its way too late for the Baseball Writers to vote him into the Hall. In 1997 they only gave him 10 votes out of the total 470 ballots cast (2.1%) and he was removed from future ballots. He was an excellent contact hitter (few strikeouts) and he had good speed in his youth, but he lacked the power production you would want from a first baseman/outfielder. His career slugging percentage was only .408. A good choice for the Cubs Hall of Fame, however.
The question is what is thr standard for thr Hall of Fame. Buckner is definitely a better player than men such as Chick Hafey, Fred Lindstrom, George Kell, George Kelley, Phil Rizzuto, Dave Bancroft, etc. Possibly even Harold Baines, and he is a favorite of mine (I'm a White Sox fan). But should men like them be the standard for selection? I don't think so.

well spoken Rich..You are one of the best in the business..and glad you escaped the mess of ESPN..

324 batting Champ average for the Cubs in 1980.
Stay classy Boston. I remember Buckner as a Cub. I would never have returned to Fenway. He’s a better man than me.
Boston, stay classy? Not possible.

Boy he could hit. RIP
They had a game 7 they could have won - so don’t want to hear it.
Agreed completely.,and they had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, if memory serves.
This can only become a big deal in a country where a major preoccupation of popular culture is men playing boys’ games.
So true..nothing more than a distraction from life. Thx for your comment

I think the red Sox winning made his last days a lot better
Well said!!!ty

@jeremyseaholm38351 00%. Buckner was a better man than I likely would have been, if I'm being brutally honest.
The Red Sox still had a game 7 and led that game before blowing it.

anti-thema would more properly mean runs counter to
Buckner had a very fine career, and he should be proud of it, but objectively, he was not Cooperstown worthy.
