- In which John reads the first chapter of his new book, The Fault in Our Stars, to you in lieu of making a real video today. I hope you like it, and that it's not too awkward hearing a 34-year-old man pretend to be 16-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster.
You can preorder your signed copy of The Fault in Our Stars at your local independent bookstore: dft.ba/-tfiosindie. You can also preorder at B&N dft.ba/-tfiosbn, Amazon dft.ba/-tfios, or anywhere else that sells books.

When I was 12, I would listen to this video over and over to get myself calm enough to sleep. I just found john’s voice so soothing. It was the only thing that would get me out of the anxiety spirals long enough to relax. I am now 21 and I am still massively thankful for John (and of course, Hank) for giving me moments of calm in my often hectic life. Coming back to this video reminds me just how long these guys have been making work for us to enjoy. I am so thankful that they created a safe space and continue to make the world that little bit less sucky.
+ I'll second all of that :)
I am 22 now and also remember listening to this video when I was a teenager, and when nerdfighteria pushed its way into my life in the most loving way possible - Hank and John to this day are the most familiar voices in my life, and I am so grateful for this little community every day - it got me through high school and now continues to get me through law school ❤ DFTBA
Oh, oh, this comment, though it makes me sad thinking about your anxiety, is also so wonderful to read, and it is so great that you posted it. To acknowledge just what an incredible impact others can have on you, it's heartwarming and inspiring.
Have you listened to it a hundred times? That's a little weird.
It so awesome to hear JOHN GREEN read the book.
I know right! And he's a great speaker/reader. :3
Nerd fighters forever! DFTBA!
IT IS :D
"Y'know how pretentious novels always start with pretentious quotations from pretentious novels? This book is no exception..."
-John Green
If I ever write a book & this is going to be the epigraph.
And then the fact that the quote from a pretentious novel was from a pretentious novel that he made up... even better. oh my gosh.
Rachel Anne its not made up. I looked it up. maybe it is. I could be wrong. I might have been lied to.
its not a "real" book in the sense that there is a physical copy somewhere, but he (John Green) has said that "I’m not going on record as to whether the quotation from Peter van Houten’s novel An Imperial Affliction used as the epigraph to The Fault in Our Stars is “real,” because to do so would mean bringing up all kinds of questions about what constitutes “real” when you’re talking about fictions. But there’s no question that the title of An Imperial Affliction is indeed taken from this poem."
so yeah
Rachel Anne Wasn't talking about Peter van Houten's book. But whatevs.
Damn it, I wanted to use it.
Before the book even started I was crying. "Dedicated to Esther Earl".
+Amiee Ann May she rest in peace.
I was really pissed when I found out An Imperial Affliction isn't actually a real book.
Wasn't that obvious
Wha
me too

"He kind of turned me on. I didn't even know guys could turn me on. Not like in real life." - John Green
Erica Bourland Honestly same
"It's not like I'm going to say 'and then I took off my bra' or anything... At least not in this chapter." xD this is perfect
I read that book in 3 hours. It was loaned to me by a friend at school, I took it home, read it, slept, and returned it the next day.
P.S. I use the term slept loosely because it is kind of hard to sleep when you are crying. Just sayin'
P.P.S. One of the best books I have read.
lol i did the exact same thing xD
I did the same exact thing! Was balling my eyes out then i saw the trailer and i cried even harder :'( best book ever!
oh my gOd! I did the same thing except I bought a signed copy in a community bookstore and I went home and I read it in 3 hours and I cried, tried to sleep, woke up a few hours later, repeat multiple times
I do the whole "don't cry. don't cry. you're in public they'll think you're crazy...WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT AGUSTUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
i have read looking for Alaska and fault in our stars I want to read paper towns!
"In case you noticed I'm not a 16 year old girl, I am indeed a 34 year old man, sorry." - John Green
TFIOS is one of the few books I will read over and over again(and cry over over and over again). Well done, John Green, well done.
I agree with you 100%
Mr.Green,
The Fault in Our Stars is my COMPLETE OBSESSION. I had leukemia and the way you talk in the book sounds like you've had cancer yourself which i love. I can honestly tell you that i've looked at many of the lines in the book and thought wow I've said/thought that before . I have literally read this book 100 times (literally). If i had saved my Make a Wish i would have probably have been to meet you or get like one of your signed books or something but Hawaii was soo appealing at the time.. I know that you probably won't see this but I just thought it's worth a try. :) Can't wait for the movie! (i've watched the trailer about 150 times and cried every time) Thank you so much for bringing Augustus and Hazel into my life.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Every time I read TFIOS, it makes me want to write for a few more hours than I normally do every day, in the futile hope that one day I'll be as good as JG. The best kinds of writers are the ones that make young ones want to write more.
thank you for saying this because literally as I was watching/listening to this I got loads of ideas for specific paragraphs of future works of mine and he is truly just amazing I love it
Melissa Shunk I know, right? It seems corny to say it, but there's something magical about watching a great author read his own work.
How are you all doing now? :)
I know this was a long time ago, but same.
His writing flows beautifully. I long for that talent! It comes with practice and reading a LOT lol
You are an inspiration to an entire generation. Thank you for touching a topic that is so difficult for a lot of people to address in such a beautiful way. One of my favourite books - Stay Awesome!
was anyone else following along with their own book?
yes
Emily Joyce Of Course!
YAASSS!!! lol
Me!
yess!
TFIOS = My "An Imperial Affliction"!
Okay. ☺️💖✨🌌
Anna Lee you're not the only one I've reread it a few times myself
yes yes! you know when she tells Gus about "An Imperial Affliction" and she's like I want to tell the world about this book because it's so great but on the other hand she wants to keep it to herself. One of the few times I don't have the book on me so can't look up the actual quote. but it's exactly how I felt when I read it.
Anyone else coming back to this video in 2020 and just appreciating everything? The years you’ve spent with Hank and John, their accomplishments, their families growing, look at the video quality and how it’s progressed with technology over the years. This is greatness, and timeless. Love you, Green boys!
I just "finished" the book! Well I haven't read the last two chapters yet because I couldn't see through my tears. :P I am now in love with John Green's writing and I plan to read every book he's ever published!
you took your time huh, good luck, they are really good :D
it took me 3 months to read The Hunger Games, and I thought I liked it (since I almost never read) it took me 2 days to read TFiOS, my favorite story of all time (not to be dramatic or anything)
SAME HERE.
I read The Hunger Games in about a week and this book in about a day.
SAME
story of my life right here
My life!
John Green. I have just finished watching the movie of the book you wrote "fault in our stars". I would like to thank you for creating such a beautiful fantastic story. I had a friend named Maureen die last year of lukimia cancer. It was very hard for me. I wish we were closer before she past. This story reminds me of her. But not only that , it inspires me. With such art in what you write makes me cry. When I'm older I want to be a realistic fiction novelist. I would hope to inspire people just like what you did to me. My name is Kylie. If you are reading this which you probably never will. I am pretty young and half ignorant, but I know one thing. The books you make will change some people's lives. Again thank you
-Kylie
Well you already have a good start at writing. You write extremely well for a younger person. Good luck on your goal :)
+Kylie LP Bless your heart, Kylie.
I don't think I've ever seen an author reading his own novel. I enjoyed this thoroughly.
John: "I'm not gonna say and then I took off my bra or something"
*looks at video suggestions*
*then I took off my bra*
Sammi Sydney XD same
I love this because books always play out differently in different people's minds, and seeing how John imagines it; how it was intended to be read out is so incredible and interesting. Seeing which pauses he imagines in whatever places, and which syllables are stressed, and which sentences are read faster or longer, and all the intonation; this is a gift.
I LAUGHED SO HARD WHEN HE SAID HIS VOICE WAS LOW, SMOKEY AND DEAD SEXY
'AND YOU TOO MIGHT BE SO LUCKY!'
Will always crack me up xD
Hurry up #TFIOS ! We LOVED the book and can't wait for the movie!
Thank you for helping me feel, not so alone in the face of an ocean of people that will never understand what it is like (even if it is fiction).
A friend and I watched A Fault in Our Stars a few days ago and I had completely forgotten that it was based a book you'd written until the very end credits. I'd cried through the film... probably more than I should have... and with seeing it as your book, I'm convinced that I can't rest until I read it. I realize now that the reason I'd cried was because it reminded me of how much it hurt when my son died in 2012. It was a beautiful story that I have to read now, so thanks for making that my new obsession.
This video has been on my watch later list for 11 years… and now I’m finally watching it. ❤
your shrug of "deal with it" when explaining to get over it about you reading the life of a young girl was fantastic, I chuckled out loud.
Is anyone else deeply in LOVE WITH JOHN GREEN?
Love his face when he reads "I win", just to be disappointed 3 seconds later when he rises the hand and shows his ring.
Aida Barberena I feel you girl.
Yes, my one hope in life is to find a John Green.
+Erica Bourland I mean. actually I have several hopes in life. I'm just saying.
We all have that hope
Am I the only one who noticed he says sixteenth but in the book it's seventeenth? Well, it's still my all time FAVOURITE book!
Ikr!! That makes no sense to me, because how can her mother start her in the support group when she is supposedly in her seventeenth year. But she introduces herself as a sixteen year old. I'm probably the only person who cared to notice THIS much about it. Whatever, the book is still good :3
Ik! :3(also on pg 3 when hazel introduces herself to the support group kids it says she's sixteen)
Catherine Galiwango During your first winter, you are not yet 1 year old, you are some amount of months old. So in Hazel's 17th winter, she is 16 years old.
there's a few discrepancies but this was probably an early writing and may not be the final draft
i like it better as 17
So I had just realized that in the first sentence of the book "Late in the winter of my seventeenth year..." and then on page 5 "I'm Hazel, I'd say when they'd get to me. Sixteen.'' She said she was sixteen, but in her seventeenth year. This does make sense because you can be sixteen, but technically after your sixteenth birsthday, you're in you seventeenth year of your life, as you have already been through sixteen years. That makes perfect sense.
I've already read this wonderful story. But just to hear John Green, the author, read it, its so crazy! Thank you so much for what you do John Green.
"And then I took off my bra", almost fell out of my chair.
I love how this was in 2011 and now TFIOS is now becoming big
Though I'm more of a Looking for Alaska fan myself, The Fault in Our Stars is absolutely flawless. I don't think John Green is even capable of writing something any less than perfect.
I finished the book in 2 hours- those were the best 2 hours of my life
listening in 2021. always heartwarming
I can't with this book I've read it 5 times and am currently reading it again. Love it.
I have to admit i have read thousands of books - I live for reading and this is the most incredible story ever. I cried for hours afterwards and mourned the characters and laughed until my ribs ached. It has changed the way i see the world and how I see people and I couldn't thank you more. It's a masterpiece and you should be eternally proud xxx
It's so crazy how a 34 year old guy could portray so well a 16 year old girl. Great job John on the book, it's my favorite romance/comedy book ever.
I love how happy he looks reading his book.
You should be happy, John. It's a masterpiece.
I would like to share my thoughts on your book, Mr. Green. Although, they may make little sense to you as my mother has informed me my ideas of reality do not quite match up with those of the general public. Your book made me fall in love with characters that do not truly exist, and then ripped my heart out and crushed it. But the worst part was, your book then forced my heart back into my chest and then ordered me to go on. I fell in love with your book, it changed my life. Thank you.
So my friend introduced me to Vlogbrothers recently and I've been watching every episode in order (yes, it's taking over my life). When I saw that this was a video, I was happy because I was just like, " I can skip that one because I already read the book! Another video down!!" But then.... TFIOS.... it's so amazing.... I just couldn't bring myself to skip it. My love for this story is too great and to hear an author reading their own book (especially when that author is John Green) is just grand.
I fell in love with Augustus.
this video helps me so much when I can't sleep. really weird but I put this on and just listen to your wonderful book and drift off. lol
Six years later: I still listen
I've read the book in one day, i couldn't stop reading. Thank you so much for this beautiful book
John Green, I don't know whether to hate or love you right now. I'm extremely upset because you made me cry so hard after reading your book. I still feel the tears on my cheek. But the sorrow you created, it's lovely and beautiful. I feel so much. I can't tell if it's good or bad, but I simply feel. John, you are a wonderful writer and I guess I have no choice but to love you for that. Thank you for a book that opened my eyes, my heart, and undoubtedly my tear ducts.
Hmm I love john green and this book but there's always something bugging me about the first chapter. Why did hazel and Augustus fall in love in a cliche way? Like love at first sight? Of a brilliantly written book, I had expected something different.
Yes, it is a bit cliche, but their entire relationship as a whole was so beautiful and unique that I don't think it matters.
Olivia Katieb yeah i really enjoyed the book, just expected something else
but still john green is amazing
(I'm not English - sorry for the grammar) Hazel fell in love in a cliche way, not Augustus. He was looking at her because it reminds him of his ex-girlfriend and he was pretty shocked to see that Hazel was a sosie of her.
It wasn't cliche at all - she didn't even like him, in the first chapter, she was making a friend - almost forced but... not forced, you know? I mean who has ever written anything about two kids with/had cancer becoming 'friends' by having a brilliant conversation, that in fact, very few people would understand - it's almost exclusive to them. Like no one can enter their world, it's amazing. That's not cliche. That's what we crave, that's something that very few can put into words. When two people click. Cliche is when two opposites bond, slowly, gracefully or fumble-y. Cliche is what people find adorable, you see it a lot but not in real life. These two were so real yet so imagined... The way they speak to each other and have these small conversations that mean so much. I don't think it was cliche. But, then again, almost every love story is 'cliche'. Keep in mind that cliche is very common, but the story itself is actually hella unique.
I'd recommend you take time in reading that, thanks.
Well, they fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.
It's so weird to have read the book and hear this
same
You have a pace .how you speak..how you think...he is onna roll...his wave. His intended form...and its the first impression book wise...so hes been over this 5 times...at least . if you read mark twain alot..it starts to be voiced in his cadence . his old timey. style..
I have two copies. One isn't signed and the other is because one day my sister and I were walking through a book store and saw signed copies so she bought another one
Good writer, good reader. I read the book a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I always find it interesting to listen to an author read his own words, hear his emphasis, his style, his personality. Thanks for posting this.
I followed along with my copy of the book. uwu
same!
me too
same!!
i totally did not do that.
p.s i lied
same
I discovered this page a few days ago during winter break. I spent 4 hours watching videos and by 4 am I was convinced that you will fix the world. I also love the fact that you and you're brother are so involved with the "fan base" and the world in general. You're a real human being and not someone completely consumed in fans, fame, or fortuned. A true genius! And totally random awesome person.Btw please disregard any weird typos, my phone likes to act up)
DONT LOOK DOWN THERE IS SPOILERS
OMFG ITS GRELL (i get too happy when i see black butler characters~)
^~^
Ty for warning me :)
I saw a spoiler above :O
Gus dies :(
His voice is so nice to listen to! I've already read the book so I wasn't really listening to the words because his voice was so soothing! I'm so relaxed!
John, I just wanted to say thank you for your literature. I could say a million things about it, but I'll leave it to this. The Fault in Our Stars quite literally made truly feel every emotion imaginable. Some of which I hadn't honestly felt in a very long time. And for that I thank you.
Started watching this video, paused it halfway and now - even after the millionth time watching it - I'm bawling my eyes out. Thanks, John.
John amuses me time and time again. "I'm not going to say something like 'I took off my bra' or something, at least not in this chapter". I was laughing on the ground for a good few seconds. Thank you John Green, you made my day.
I’ll come back to this video every once in a while because I love listening to John read
watching at 420p in 2022 :)
Dear John Green,
I would like to thank you for writing this extraordinary book, ' The fault in our stars'. This book inspired me and especially the last few chapters changed my life.
I finally got a copy but unfortunately it was from a different shop so it's not signed! I just read the first chapter along with him and can't wait to read more! Thank you John for a great book! :-)
It is so amazing to actually hear John read it out loud. You get more insight as to what he was thinking when he was writing it. What a talented man he is.
JOHN I LOVE YOU!!!!! TFIOS is amazing!
I borrowed this book from the back of my English classroom and I finished it today. Such a beautiful book. I was reading the part when Augustus dies during class, and I started crying.
It's deeply fascinating how vlogbrother-like the book is written. Logical, yes, but fascinating nonetheless
one of my favourite books of all time!
I'm here because of a girl and because of her this book is special :)
I saw the movie today. This was the first and only movie - or book, or song, or anything like that - i've cried to. It's very, very BEAUTIFUL.
I just finished The Fault in Our Stars.
Thanks, King John, for murdering my feelings.
thank you john green for writing the book...it really made me cry..
"Why did the group rotate?, a side affect of dying?" Am I bad person for finding that funny? Probably ohh well my humor always has been really dark
when john wrote the book he intentionally threw in jokes! hehe i laughed too though
I read this book in a day and I am obsessed! When I reread it I'm sucked into hazels beautiful horrible world and it feels real and for me being an eleven year old girl saying this it just just provokes my premature mind to think of cancer patients and think about what they go thru. I want to thank you John for writing such an amazing book.
The next time I read TFiOS again, I'll be hearing your voice in my head for sure.
That'd make the experience much better. :)
thank you for being you thank you for what u do, forever grateful dftba
I love how he would merely glance at the page as he speaks...
I have so much love for this book I stand by the idea that you can open this book up to any page and there will be at least one sentence that either makes you feel so acutely or makes you think so deeply that you will fall in love with the book all over.
I didn't intend on watching this entire video, but it was just that good.
Hearing you reading the book only makes me sadder because we all know how' it is going to end. *sobs*
Hugs
I read your book and it was AMAZING!
This book break me apart. I could not read any other book for a long period of time, but it help me to be a little bit more considerate with the universe around me. Thank you John Green.
AND THEN I TOOK OFF MY BRAW LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive been reading this story repeatedly for almost a year now. The first time i read it i read straight through cover to cover without stopping and its just as perfect every time i reread it since. I love this book so much thank you for writing it, it makes me view the world differently and im so excited to see how they put it on screen but the movie will never do this book justice no matter how incredible they make it i just love TFIOS so much
Guys... there's a bunny in the description c; you're welcome
Does anyone else remember this video when it first came out? Everyone was like wow John this book sounds great, and not its a huge success and there is a movie?
Watching this video reminds me that we are a community built up, not a fan base, or a cult of the personality of John or Hank. In the recent survey I said I rarely had anything important to add to videos in comments, in this case I do, I wanted to remind anyone who may read this of our more than humble beginnings, and look past the screaming fans to a book about the imperfection of our fate that did not make us cry, but moved us to tears by exposing our own misapprehension of illness and the real alive people who go through it.
Thank you most of all for that.
Dear John Green,
I hate you. Do not stop reading, for this is not a hate comment, but a compliment if anything. I have almost finished reading this lovely book, in which I have just taken in the first three words of Chapter 21 and in doing so you have accomplished something only one other author has been able to do; you have made me cry, purely because of words printed on a page and essentially you have smeared my mascara. How dare you, John Green, smear my mascara by determining the fate of such a wonderful character. I hate you with nothing but a burning passion to finish this novel, and so, I will continue reading.
I just finished reading "The Fault in Our Stars" and it is now my all time favorite book ( and trust me I have read a lot of books). When it was Augustus's funeral I was balling excessively it was like attending my best friend's funeral my heart burst, the character was so well developed. Thank you for the awesome and heart felt book.
I just realized.... Isaac. EYEsaac. Well played, John, well played.
Thank you for writing this book! As a cancer survivor I'd like to thank you for getting it right. All the thoughts and emotions Hazel went through mirrored my own while I was in treatment. Thank you for writing the book in a real and honest way. I can never thank you enough
Okay?
Okay.
Stop flirting u 2
Mary Carnell I know right... " 'Okay' is BURSTING with sensuality."
Okay.
Seriously stop
TFIOS was introduced to me by young adults. However it helped my middle-aged self address issues about my puppy-love boyfriend's illness, death at age 16. That experience sent me to the convent, majoring in psychology & education, escaping the convent embracing the secular world, enhancing my earthly foibles. Wish TFIOS was around back then, yet is has struck a note/symphony in this OLD GAL's soul. Blessings John :)
My friend spoiled it for me
***** i am still reading it, actually for a weird reason i love when people spoil something for me cuz it encourages me to read/watch the whole thing
SuperCupcake1218 yeah I love when I read spoilers, actually I can't read a book without having spoilers :)
I had the book started reading got it spoiled for me, then decided to keep reading after like a month later and I LOVED it so much.... even though it was spoiled its still a really good book.
And you still refer to them as a friend? haha
Makayla Cole Well if I didn't refer to them as friends, I would have none....
Every time I write something, I hate handing it into a teacher /anyone else to read because I want them to understand it with the tone I presented. Them reading it doesn't bring the same experience or what I wrote justice, and listening to John read this brought tears to my eyes. Amazing book & absolutely sur-real hearing it how he intended it to be.
the dutch tulip man is petter van houten, they both are john green
Order a copy last week and can't wait to start it! Thanks for your beautiful reading and writing, John!
So when does he take off his bra...
Mike Adder patience, grasshopper
John, I know that I am like two years late jumping on this wagon but I just want you to know that your book as probably become on of my most favorite books. I mean I have cried during a book before but I don't thin I have ever cried that much while reading and I still LOVE it. The characters just seem so real and now that I am finished with the book.....I actually miss the characters. Thankfully this is a book that I know I am going to have no problem reading over and over again (In fact I actually look forward to re-reading it.) Though I don't know if you will ever see this post I want to thank you for writing such an amazing book. Thank you.
Omg how are they going to get all the background thoughts into the movie!
never thought I needed to hear john narrating in my life this much.
