"My head was level with hers as we stared at each other from opposite sides of the glass. I don't remember how it ended - if I went to bed or she did. In my memory, it doesn't end. We just stay there, looking at each other, forever."
So I just finished the book this weekend, and wow. It's awesome. I loved it. I walked around in a daze for the rest of the day, because my mind was stuck on Paper Towns. And it's really great going back and listening to you read the prologues. Thank you for all your awesome books! They make my life better.
I pre-ordered it and it came yesterday, on my birthday! And I read along with you this time, I brought my book to my computer and read along with your voice. There are no words to describe the awesome that generated from this action. And also, thank YOU for being awesome. The world is so much better because of you.
I love John Green's voice when he's reading. It relaxes me; I've taken to listening to this video if I need relaxing, and I'll just close my eyes, lean my head on the table, and listen.
This comment comes in three parts. 1.) Great book! I bought it Monday and couldn't put it down or stop thinking about it until I finished it earlier tonight. 2.) Because I've watched so many of your videos I often had my internal reading voice in John Green's voice. I don't know if this is a normal thing to happen. It wasn't bad, just different. 3.) After I finished the book at a bar singing "They might be giants" karaoke I struck up a conversation with a man there about books because he saw me reading. He seemed interested so I gave the book to him with a few margin notes. Mostly my opinion on the use of commas and semicolons where I thought the wording would work better. (Also because I often had your voice in my head and I think I know some of your speech pattarn down by now.) The only condition for this free book to someone I met that night was that he read it and do the same thing.
Story idea right there: a character is an author whose characters come to life, and so he forms relationships with them, being able to write them however he wants.
Theres something about writers reading their own words that gives those words the most beautiful rhythm. It's as natural as hearing the thoughts in your own head. SO freaking good John, I'm going to buy this after I'm done reading my current book. :)
I recently finished this book, and it is by far my favorite of all of his books. John, you are brilliant, and I adore every book you've written. I finished it in the course of 2.5 hours, and got that feeling you get when you finish and amazing book- relief, happiness, and sadness. Somehow, this book clicked in an entirely different way than Alaska and Abundance. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
+Lindsay Barr Is your town a boring suburban trap? Because I grew up in a boring suburban trap and I remember reading this book and recognizing that their town was a boring suburban trap.
i Read aloNg, and sOme stufF is Different. Either waY the BooK is AWESOME. bEst Wishes! mArgo Roth spiegelMan P.S. JOHN WHERE ARE YOUR NERD GLASSES?!?!?! I loved those!
JOHN, back when you posted your working prologue, I watched and said "Wow, I've got to get this when it comes out." Then months went by, and to be honest I had put it out of my mind. Even through all of this release week vlogging excitement! Thank goodness you posted this, because now I am totally pumped about it again. *TO AMAZON!*
I'm a pre-service English teacher, and as I create a unit based on the concept "Imagining People Complexly" (with Paper Towns as the central text, of course), I'm realizing how awesome it will be for my students to hear the prologue read aloud by the author himself. Thanks for doing what you do and being as awesome as you are, John. It's seriously inspiring.
So, I was reading from my book whilit hearing him and there's a part in mine that's not in his??? "She was pointing. And then I realized what was different. There was a live oak a few feet ahead of us. Thick and gnarled and ancient-looking. That was not new. The playground on our right. Not new, either. But now, a guy wearing a gray suit, slumped against the trunk of the oak tree. Not moving. This was new. He was encircled by blood; [...]" I'd understand if he was reading from a draft, but he's holding the actual book. Is mine different because it's paperback? Did he skip a paragraph?
John...JOHN!!! That was such an amazing prologue! I love how you paint a picture with words...the emotions are so sharp and real, and the characters are comepletely engaging. The next two days is gonna be sooooo hard!!! I want to buy it and read it now!!!!!
I discovered the brilliance of the vlog brothers a month or two ago, but I just started reading John's books this weekend (love them!) and now I can 'hear' how John narrating in my head as I read :)
Man, this video is so important to me. I really need to know it’s okay to edit! The fear of not being perfect keeps me from doing so much. It’s not the end of the world, James! Get it together!
you have the perfect reading voice. i've been wanting to buy this book for a while, and now that i've heard the prologue, i'm going to tomorrow! you are an amazing writer, john.
Jonh Green, you are now my new favorite Author. Paper towns was my first read and it was for my schools book club, of which I am the "President", it was, in truth, just handed to me and I flew with it. But anyway, This morning, I finished my second novel by you, and I must say, your Books are amazing thus far! Being able to hear the Prologue to a book I always seem to think about it just amazing! Thank you ^w^
Wow. I was only 6 years old when this was uploaded, probably hadn't even known who John Green is. 10 years later, John's writing has helped me accept the fact that life isn't all candies and rainbows, but a roller-coaster that never stops. I've watched the movies based upon his books but always wondered what was the base. And then I read The Fault in Our Stars, instantly fell in love and read certain parts many times after. Few more books later, John has become my favourite writer! P. S. Also, as a polyglot and a native Serbian girl, i can confirm John's books can help with anyone's English. P. P. S. Nerdfighteria rocks ❤️
+Bronwyn Lawrence actually no, miracles are the seemingly impossible or unlikely things that happen. We only hear about the positive miracles because someone decided to romanticize them into something magical and mysterious. When really, all it is, is an unlikely event. Crazy right?
I absolutely adore your writing style. I started reading Katherines and couldn't put it down. Seriously, I read as much as I could while still taking care of homework and such, and then stayed up until 2:00 AM on that Saturday because it was completely made of awesome. I'm waiting for my friend to get Alaska back from her friend so I can read it, and I will totally buy Paper Towns if I can. (I have no money, so I borrow books...) I love what I've heard so far! Thanks for being so awesome!
Hey John Can i just say im a new nerdfighter, a baby one. I ordered your book last week because being a nerdfighter its practically the law. It was delievered to my house yesterday and in the matter of 18 hours iv nearly read it all. I just wanted to say its one of the most awesomest books iv read and i read alot. It really made me feel like the characters were my friends and no alone. Thank you for this fantastic book and making the last 18 hours an adventure. Best wishes! lol DFTBA x
AAHHHH!!! i cant wait to get it in the mail!!!!! THats sooooo good!!! John, you should seriously consider making your book on cd, you read it so well, and your voice it totally made of nothing but awesomeness... It's completely memorizing. Just loved it!
I liked that you chose sad Margo cover for reading this part because it adds verymuch to the mood of the prolog. That line about the strings inside the man breaking is probably my favorite. Its so simplistic and sad. Words cannot express how excited I am to read this book.
paper towns was so core to my teenage existence and is my most reread book ever. it's so crazy going through these and watching these now. i had no idea all this was here
John, I cannot articulate how impressed I am with your book! I am a shy nerdfighter, and even though I've been watching since the first jan., this is my first comment (I sent you a message, too, but I'm sure you've forgotten) Congratulations on finishing Paper Towns, I'm sure it will be another huge success!
I just finished Paper Towns. I honestly cannot describe how damn amazing it is. Best book I've ever read, honestly. That might change, however, because I'm going to order all of your books from Amazon soon. John Green, thank you for being an amazing writer and thank you for existing.
I am definitely picking up this book when I get the next chance at a bookstore, it is that friggin' awesome to listen to you reading John! Hopefully at some time the audio books for all of your works will include you as the narrator, that would make my day :)
John you will probably never read this, but thank you so much for writing Paper Towns. Quentin Jacobsen is like, literally me. I could relate to him so much and the book really just comforted me when i was stressed or sad.
So I picked up Paper Towns today and have been reading it non stop after work. It's the first book in a long time where I haven't been able to figure it out way before the end which is really awesome because it keeps me guessing. On page 226 now and it's after three in the morning. Looking forward to finding out how it plays out. I love the characters in the book too and your way of writing.
I remember hearing the first time you read the prologue. It was great the first time, but parts of it seem so much more vivid now (the dead guy and others). I'm still holding out on buying it until the 16th because none of the book store around me were releasing it early. Even if they did have it, I'm still gonna wait. I feel it's only right. Thanks for reading this for us, John. I can't wait to hear more or get the book in my hands, which ever comes first.
i am SO SO SO pumped for Paper Towns to come out. I might just walk to the book store after school just to buy it. and let me tell you it's very far. i also think that I might buy 2 copies. john. you are made of awesome and i'm more excited for this book release then any album release ever. EVER.
I found Paper Towns in the back room of my library. I picked it up, read the prologue and it was your voice I heard in my head. I put it back because it wasn't ready to be checked out properly, but it was a magical moment all the same. It's going to be a wonderful book, I can't wait. I really enjoyed A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle, by the way.
John Green, thank YOU for being so awesome to us. You really don't have to do any of this. We appreciate it! Let it be known that you'll sell at least one copy of Paper Towns in Puerto Rico: mine!
I just finished this book about five minutes ago, and I just wanted to say that I thought it was incredible. I mean, I liked Looking for Alaska, but I really loved Paper Towns. It definitely made me think about some topics that are difficult to wrap my mind around, and I could tell you worked hard to make sure they were well-developed. It's definitely something that I'll be rereading when I have the time. Again, wonderful work, and I look forward to the Cambridge event this Friday! :)
I wish you could just read the whole thing. Haha! It sounds just so much better. The way you speaked quickly when Margo's excited, and everything. Loved it.
i didn't like this book when i read it in 2008 but it DID make me start listen to the mountain goats and now i have been to two mountain goats concerts (and discovered that i really don't like concerts, but i did try twice!)
I just read your book Paper Towns and I have to say that it is the best book I have read in my entire life, you inspire me as I hope to become a writer someday just like you :)
i just finished the book today and it's pretty much one of the best books i've ever read. also, i tried reading it in your voice the whole, which didn't work, so i thoroughly enjoyed this.
omg, I can't wait to get this, and all your other books! I'm gonna order them as soon as I move into my new apartment. You give me inspiration to write again, I hope to someday finish and publish my own novel. You and your brother are the greatest... and speaking of Hank, I saw him on Planet Green yesterday, it was so unexpected and exciting. DFTBA!
This book was by far one of my favourite books I've ever read. It's something that I've finished a while ago but I'll still find myself thinking about it now and then.
Gosh, I love every time I hear it. I'm also thrilled that Amazon is sending the book to me on the eighteenth, instead of the predicted twenty-second. It's still pushing it to read it in only a day and a half, but it is possible. Darn these slow eyes of mine.
I have the book and have read it several times in the past however long it has been out, but sometimes I still come back to listen to John read the prologue.
Oh my goodness, I am so excited for Paper Towns ! Awesome reading :) You're actually really nice to listen to, which is a refreshing change from all my boring professors.
"My head was level with hers as we stared at each other from opposite sides of the glass. I don't remember how it ended - if I went to bed or she did. In my memory, it doesn't end. We just stay there, looking at each other, forever."
god damn, his voice is so calming, this is perfect
ikr
Okay so literally the only reason I was ever upset that Cara played Margo was that I pictured Margo being THE FACE ON THE BOOK.
So I just finished the book this weekend, and wow. It's awesome. I loved it. I walked around in a daze for the rest of the day, because my mind was stuck on Paper Towns. And it's really great going back and listening to you read the prologues. Thank you for all your awesome books! They make my life better.
*grabs copy of paper towns & reads along*
John Green. Must I say more?
I just want you to read me to sleep every night. Not in a creepy though. You simply have a soothing voice.
I pre-ordered it and it came yesterday, on my birthday!
And I read along with you this time, I brought my book to my computer and read along with your voice. There are no words to describe the awesome that generated from this action.
And also, thank YOU for being awesome. The world is so much better because of you.
this is so relaxing to me.
I love John Green's voice when he's reading. It relaxes me; I've taken to listening to this video if I need relaxing, and I'll just close my eyes, lean my head on the table, and listen.
that was AWESOME!
Thanks for reading the prologue John! It was great. I can't wait to get my own copy. And I may possible be seeing you in Seattle!
John, you have such a lovely reading voice.
I'm so excited for Paper Towns! I hope that Thursday is absolutely fantastic for you.

After having just finished the book, I'm now realizing the absolute multifaceted brilliance of this prologue. Thanks John

basically the movie Ruby Sparks

John Green should have recorded the audio book of "Paper Towns".
It probably takes a while and his publishers would rather have him work on selling the book
It is so cool to hear you read that. It's always worth hearing the author read from their book, and I am glad to hear it again!
Reading PT right now and looooving it, can't wait for the movie!
You're amazing John. Beautiful work. Keep writing.

This is the longest RUclips video I have ever watched, and I didn't pause it or get bored once.
I need that book.

I'll be there!
John, I'm sooo excited about reading your book. I just got an email from Amazon that my copy is on it's way, so yay!

I was soooo happy to see Cara playing the role of Margo she's amazing thank u for taking her!💟💖😍
You read your story so well. I read Paper Towns last night (in one go that left me sleep deprived). You blow my mind. I can't wait to meet you Friday!
I remember hearing the first time you read the prologue. It was great the first time, but parts of it seem so much more vivid now (the dead guy and others).
I'm still holding out on buying it until the 16th because none of the book store around me were releasing it early. Even if they did have it, I'm still gonna wait. I feel it's only right.

it's very far.
i also think that I might buy 2 copies.
john. you are made of awesome and i'm more excited for this book release then any album release ever.
I could totally fall asleep to John's voice.
I wish you could just read the whole thing. Haha!
It sounds just so much better. The way you speaked quickly when Margo's excited, and everything. Loved it.
loved it!
i could listen to you read all day john.
Wow. I cannot believe it has been 12 years. I guess time really does keep moving.
oh man. i am even more excited about paper towns showing up on my door step. you, sir, are a brilliant writer.
i didn't like this book when i read it in 2008 but it DID make me start listen to the mountain goats and now i have been to two mountain goats concerts (and discovered that i really don't like concerts, but i did try twice!)
@ciwwaf2012 i definitely know what you mean, shes not afraid to be alone, or lonely, shes amazing
I just read your book Paper Towns and I have to say that it is the best book I have read in my entire life, you inspire me as I hope to become a writer someday just like you :)
i'm so buying this book when it comes out.

This book was by far one of my favourite books I've ever read. It's something that I've finished a while ago but I'll still find myself thinking about it now and then.
The way you write is enthralling.
I love the way you write
You inspire me completely
This is amazing, John.
I can't wait to read it.
I love love LOVE when authors read their own work aloud. Especially John; he has such a nice reading voice. I envy his children.
Gosh, I love every time I hear it. I'm also thrilled that Amazon is sending the book to me on the eighteenth, instead of the predicted twenty-second. It's still pushing it to read it in only a day and a half, but it is possible. Darn these slow eyes of mine.

I read Paper Towns alongside the video with the pre-revised version. Just to see how much it varied
I can't wait to read Paper Towns. In fact, I'm not sure if I've EVER been this excited about a book before. Thanks, John.
