Ruger revolvers are like Pokemon. SP101 evolves into GP100 and learns the "six-shot" skill, then GP100 evolves into Super Redhawk and learns the "bear defense" skill 😁
I have both of these but my SP101 is a 3" Both great revolvers and tons of fun to shoot but the GP100 is probably my favorite handgun that I own as far as fun factor. I also opted to use my GP100 as my secondary CCW instead of my SP101 (we are only allowed to list two where I live) since it is a woods/hiking gun for me, and the weight of a firearm has never bothered me personally.
My GP100 is the last revolver I'd ever sell and it's by far the most frequently requested wheelgun my range guests ask for. It's very well balanced and a great choice for a hiking gun!
Thank you for showing the difference in recoil between both revolvers when shooting 357 magnum. I had a tough time picking which Ruger I wanted and I realize that the SP101 would be too much in 357 magnum for me.
Great guns. You may want to try holding it like a revolver instead of a semi auto. Will make a difference in your shooting and prevent possible burn on thumb from cylinder flash. God bless…
I would recommend the GP100 to anyone. I like it more than a number of other full frame revolvers I own and it gets requested by my friends more than any other revolver I have for range outings. It's a total workhorse that's built like a tank and comes with the Hogue grips from the factory.
I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed yours as much as I have 😄. Ruger produces really well made and robust wheel guns that handle amazingly well. Thanks so much for watching!
Last guy I saw using the "support thumb forward" grip on a revolver got the tip of his thumb burnt and smacked pretry hard by the cylinder gap 💥💥💥 No problems for you, I guess???
I've never shot a wheel gun where my support thumb extends past the cylinder gap, even on subcompacts. My thumbs have always seemed too short, or my hands just small enough for this not to matter. I've messed around and tried to see what it would take to get this to happen for me, and I'd have to really twist my support hand forward in a way that's uncomfortable and not providing much support.
It's easier to get back on target with the GP100 because it has Hogue overmolded rubber grips which absorb a good deal of felt recoil, and the gun weighs 65% more which further reduces recoil and muzzle rise (It's 40 oz. versus the SP101's 26 oz.)
They're both amazing and they excel at what they each specialize in. If carry weight and concealability are a concern, then the SP101 has the advantage. Otherwise, the GP100 is pretty much the revolver all my friends ask me to bring to the range because they all love it. You generally can't go wrong with Ruger revolvers. I couldn't decide, that's how I ended up with both 😂
This GP100 has comfortable Hogue grips and great target sights with a bright red front ramp. It's significantly larger / heavier than it's SP101 little brother and a great range / home defense / duty revolver. Note that the 10mm version will need you to utilize moon clips that it comes with, I'm not sure if that matters to you at all. They're easy to use but some people don't like that moon clips are needed to adapt autoloading cartridges to revolvers. You can't go wrong with any of the GP100's though, they're fantastic and I'd recommend them to most shooters. Good luck!
@@GigatonsGunworks I'm back doing more research ... in retrospect this was probably one of the best side by side comparisons for recoil ... I'm leaning towards the SP101 with tghe 3inch barrel ... it should handle a little better for recoil for 357 magnum .. and i can still carry comfortably ... and use 38 special +p when needed ... i have to be honest though .. i do like those 357 magum 8 shot versions out there ... but not great for concealed ...
@@goldengate8287 The SP101 is probably my favorite small wheel gun for .357. It's built like a tank and handles recoil better than its similarly sized competitors. It's the best compromise between handling and ease of carry where handling is a priority. Hope you're doing well and good luck on making your choice!

The click click click click click after empty made me cringe. Pretty sure we can all count to 5. Dump them and move on. No need for the extra dry firing. Its clear!😂
Dude Ruger says in the manual you can and are actually supposed to dry fire the piss out of the SP101. It smooths out the action. Don’t dry fire a 22 a CZ (75 series) or a revolver with the firing pin on the hammer (old Smiths and Colts) like even one time though.

Super Redhawk used .44 Magnum! It's super effective! 😂
The wild Ursaring fainted.
LOL! Good one!
A good .357 hardcast inside of 50 yards can take down anything in the lower 48. Don't underestimate those .357 loads from Buffalo Bore!

Yea lol. He don't know how to hold a revolver.
The gp100 visibly has less recoil. Size matters!
Noticed that too. I’ve shot both myself and can attest to that as well.
Good comparison, including comparing .357 and .38spl in each. Big difference, both the pistol and the round.
I have the sp101 and hated the stock grips and changed them for Hogues which have been great. I’m thinking about picking up the gp100

Can't wait to purchase my GP100 in a couple weeks...will be my first revolver!
Great first choice! Mine is my favorite full size double action revolver and the last one I would sell. I hope you enjoy your new GP100!
How do you like it now?
My sp101 has a 3 inch barrel, I have the same gp100 you have. They are great revolvers.

Just picked up a sp101 to retire my windacator
Half the weight, half the trigger pull, and one less shot.
Congrats, I hope you enjoy your SP101 as much as I've enjoyed mine! It's a really well built sub-compact that shoots like a bigger gun 😄

Nice with side-by-side. Very hard to gauge size difference in stills.
Glad you found the comparison useful!
Gotta love the stability and accuracy of either one. Thanks.

Dry firing does not hurt these revolvers in the least. In fact it's encouraged to break in the stiff trigger on these particular revolvers.
Cases on the ground… even the if you don’t reload now it’s foolish to not save your cases.
Maybe a little firearms training is in order. Blue sky rule should always be in effect. Please don’t point the muzzle up Sir.
