I have a hammerless 2 1/4 inch model. I think the 3 inch model would be one of the best all around buys. Flexible for outdoors work but still competitive for carry.
Bought mine, with 3" barrel, in early 2012. My favorite handgun. Once in a while, I practice with 38 special, but mostly shoot 357mag. I reload and stocked up with a lifetime supply of components many years ago. Only change I made was hogue grips. I also have GP100 6" barrel, 45 Colt Blackhawk 5.5", and a couple of semi auto 9mm. Great video. I absolutely love my Ruger SP-101 3” .357 magnum. I’ve owned it for around 12 years and it’s been nothing but reliable. I actually just recently did a video about it on my channel. It shoots good with jacketed bullets as well as my own hardcast handloads. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful gun. I worked on the trigger face, rounding the sharp edges and polishing the face, and now it's perfect. Kind of bit my finger with .357 loads before that.
I recently got the 2.25 inch barrel version. I carry a S&W 637 regularly, but I've found that (to me) the SP101 is more balanced and accurate. Plus the option of using .357. The extra ten ounces is negligible, in my opinion.
I’m picking up that exact model today as I write this. Only change I plan to make right off of switching out the stock front sight for a tritium sight. I’ll see how it feels at the range before I think about different grips. Intend to carry OWB under a sport coat for “sheepdog” duty at my synagogue, at the very least. Might carry more generally if I can easily conceal it OWB (e.g., oversized t-shirt). Really looking forward to having this beauty.
If you got a spare buck or two, and you fall sinfully in lust with this little fella, I can recommend a custom shop that (as of '09) specialized in S&W and Ruger revolvers. He's pricey but he put a tritium front sight on front, polished hammer and trigger, action job revolutionizes double action pull, also debuted, did something with the crown and something called chamfering. Anyway, I spent more on that work than I did on $499 purchase price of revolver in the first place! Crazy but glad I have it now.

Lake County Examiner, Lakeview, Oregon: Wednesday, March 24th, 2021/Letters To The Editor Ruger SP-101 Letter to the editor: Best general-purpose handgun
For a general-purpose handgun consider Ruger’s SP-101 .357 Magnum revolver: “stainless steel”, 5 shot swing out cylinder (double-action), with 4.2” barrel and target sights for the citizen owning only one handgun. Versatile for "self-defense/house protection/concealed carry", as a kit and trail gun for the outdoorsman/ sportsman, and for urban metro vs. wilderness rural use. At 30 oz. unloaded lightweight (for the hiker, backpacker, trapper), yet heavy enough to handle the .357 Magnum. Loaded with .38 Special 148 grain lead target wad-cutter ammo (next to a .22 or .32) practical for hunting small game: rabbit, squirrel, and grouse (for the campfire skillet), for dispatching vermin such as raccoon, skunk, possum, etc. Even for butchering livestock such as cattle with a head shot. Loaded with CCI's classic .38 Special shot or snake load of No. 9 shot highly effective in killing rattlesnakes. Readily and instantly accessible in reach via a nightstand, dresser or bureau drawer, or next to a sleeping bag inside a tent is very comforting armed security to have, especially at night! This handgun would also be great for a long-haul trucker, or hay hauler, to carry. Even for the motorist traveling on a road trip. Yes, bear in mind being broken down, stranded, and having to spend the night alone in your vehicle. This .38/.357 revolver combination along with an Atomic Beam Flashlight, survival knife, fresh drinking water, food, toilet paper, shovel, matches, wool blanket, etc. could certainly take back the night. Even for a woman it's smaller frame and size would still fit her smaller hands. And firing.38 Special ammo in this. *357 Magnum could still be handled by a female. Civilian defense shooting and police or military needs are polar opposites for all kinds of reasons. The oft quoted FBI stats for a defensive shooting is 3-3-3, as in rounds fired, seconds of the encounter and range, as in within 3 yards. Unlike police we own every round fired and don't have qualified immunity or police union seven figure defense funds, so the goal is escape. I am a SP101 fan, bought my first about a year or two after they were released. But my most recent purshase or a new SP101 turned out to be crap. It has issues with cylinder not rotating about 30% of the time, and the hammer is very hard to cock. In general a very rough action. Sent in back to Ruger last Monday. Hope it is more useful when I get it back, otherwise it will hit the used gun market and be replaced by a Glock 27. S&W's larger Revolvers have gone to pot recently in my opinion. S&W J frames, Kimber K6S and Ruger SA Revolvers and LCR's are the only decent Revolvers out there these days IMHO. No experience with other brands of revolvers.
@@mynameismudd3134 I liked the Hogue grip. But everyone has different sized hands and ideas on what is best for them. The stock grip is real short and unless you have rather small hands (even then) then it's not very useful for getting a good purchase on the handle. Every time I used the stock grip my pinky finger and sometimes ring finger as well, could not use the grip at all. I don't have large hands either..
Should be a 6 rounder instead of 5... That's why I prefer a S&W K or L frame, Kimber K6S, or Colt King Cobra. While a great revolver, the SP101 would be my last choice... Heck even Tauruses are now 6 shots.
The real problem with these wheel guns is that no one wants to practice anymore. When I had my GP100 it was a favorite of mine to shoot. Was getting ready to get an SP101 but I made the worst decision of my life. I married a woman which was anti-guns. Due to having children and money problems I had to get rid 😪 of my guns. Damnit I wish I wasn't so horny back then.
Hammerless is a misnomer in a sense. They all use hammers. In this case Hammerless describes a double action only or a hammer that isn't exposed so that a user can manipulate it
Great revolver, horrible trigger. For $800+ you would think you could have a smoother and lighter trigger. Ruger has gone insane in pricing which is why I went to Taurus.
I have two stock rugers a gp100 and this exact revolver in the video… When I first pulled the triggers they were extremely stiff and heavy… but I just put oil on the mechanisms and dry fire practiced for a couple of days with snap caps and they smoothed out really nice. Long story short they will smooth out considerably with use, but are pretty rough when brand new.
@@WhyPhi I have no idea why he is complaining. I use Taurus and Ruger revolvers and Taurus is definitely below par in quality and feel once broken in compared to the Ruger
Ruger has indeed gone insane with the pricing. Two wrongs don't make a right however. May I respectfully point out that you've likely gone insane buying Taurus?
Nice, but a hot 9mm load performs as well in the 2.25" and 3" barrel as the .357 Mag round but with a lot less flash and blast. A 4.2" barrel is needed for the .357 Mag round to outperform the 9mm round.
ONLY with bullets weighing around 125 grains or less...step up to bullets 158 grain or 180 & the 9mm can't even compete....heavier bullets useful for deeper penetration (ie dangerous animal protection...hunting etc) 👍
Altamont Grips has drop-in wood inserts which replace the factory plastic inserts on the SP-101. Give the gun a completely better look. They sell direct. Inserts about $33. 😊
These are always just nice as decorations or range toy but with situations nowadays, people won't rob you alone..take care of yourself carry something of high capacity.

Hopefully Ruger will get you fixed up. I have had pretty good luck with them in the past.
Hey man wanted to check in a see how sending it back went. Have you enjoyed it since getting it back?
Yeah, how dud Ruger make this right?
Revolvers are more reliable just because mag guns are prone to jamming 🙄.
That's not what old cops who shot nothing but revolvers say.
@@mattr918 Well who gives ah damn what an old cops says 🥴🙄
Yep
First thing to do is ditch that grip. Then it improves this product several levels in my opinion
And replace it with?
Worried so much about shots get an auto
The real problem with these wheel guns is that no one wants to practice anymore. When I had my GP100 it was a favorite of mine to shoot. Was getting ready to get an SP101 but I made the worst decision of my life. I married a woman which was anti-guns. Due to having children and money problems I had to get rid 😪 of my guns. Damnit I wish I wasn't so horny back then.
If you are in a defensive shooting and can't stop the threat with 5 rounds of 357 magnum, then a 6th round is not going to help you.
There are plenty of 6 shot revolvers
Hammerless is a misnomer in a sense. They all use hammers. In this case Hammerless describes a double action only or a hammer that isn't exposed so that a user can manipulate it
Correct term internal hammer e.g. S&W 642 or Ruger LCR series 😊
Great revolver, horrible trigger. For $800+ you would think you could have a smoother and lighter trigger. Ruger has gone insane in pricing which is why I went to Taurus.
I have two stock rugers a gp100 and this exact revolver in the video…
When I first pulled the triggers they were extremely stiff and heavy… but I just put oil on the mechanisms and dry fire practiced for a couple of days with snap caps and they smoothed out really nice.
Both great carry guns.
Really if the threat is still there after 5 357 magnum is one more gonna help...lmao.
😵🤡
Nice, but a hot 9mm load performs as well in the 2.25" and 3" barrel as the .357 Mag round but with a lot less flash and blast. A 4.2" barrel is needed for the .357 Mag round to outperform the 9mm round.
ONLY with bullets weighing around 125 grains or less...step up to bullets 158 grain or 180 & the 9mm can't even compete....heavier bullets useful for deeper penetration (ie dangerous animal protection...hunting etc) 👍
Ruger much nicer looking gun
Had this gun and traded it. It was like carrying a brick in my pocket. Much better options in my opinion
It certainly does feel like an anchor in the pocket. Did that for 10 or so years with one of these. I have a limp now. Lol.
It's not a pocket gun; you need a good IWB holster for this.
Pocket carry? Just tell everybody you’re glad to see them 🤡
Altamont Grips has drop-in wood inserts which replace the factory plastic inserts on the SP-101. Give the gun a completely better look. They sell direct. Inserts about $33. 😊
Great review. Many thanks. Beautiful gun.
Absolute gorgeous revolver with a failed sight system. Non adjustable sights at that price keeps me from buying one.
Ah yes, the old ccw cannon.
The grip it comes with is horrible. If you get one change it immediately
3” all the way, lot of wasted power in a .357 coming out of a snub
These are always just nice as decorations or range toy but with situations nowadays, people won't rob you alone..take care of yourself carry something of high capacity.
Been carrying mine since 1999. 357mag, 3¼" barrel, Hogue grips, fixed lanyard loop, cut for moon clips by Clark Customs, Best IWB holster for me is a Size 6 S&W J-Frame CQC holster by Blackhawk.com. Excellent SD tool.
